Daily Tech News 25 October 2021

Top Story

  • One thing I have to give Dell credit for: Service manuals. (PDF)

Need step-by-step instructions for replacing the WiFi module or the GPU fan for your laptop? All in there.

Also, the Inspiron 15 and 15 Plus, like the 16 Plus I currently have, have dual M.2 slots. Though one is a mini-me 2230 slot, like the 16 Plus. Would it kill them to just make them both full size?

Plus, the Inspiron 15 is available with an AMD 5700U just like the Inspiron 14, and with the dual M.2 slots makes an even more attractive NUC replacement - once it goes on sale at 35% or 40% off, which it currently is not. Only problem is it's too big to fit in a document tray, which was my clever idea for creating a budget desktop rack.

Tech News

  • Old and busted: Don't be evil.

    New hotness:

These are allegations, not proven in court, but a lot of them are familiar to those watching this nonsense in recent years.

Really this is the top story but I didn't want to fill the front page with embedded Tweets.

  • But wait, there's more:

  • Prince of Persia has been ported to the Atari XL. (Vintage is the New Old)

You will need a model with 128k of RAM though.

  • AMD's "Zen 3D" CPUs - the ones with the stacked cache chips - will go into production next month. (WCCFTech)

And launch in February. I'm not sure if that means they had to do a die revision to bring these into production, but it kind of sounds like it.

38 I actually still have a 20 year old Dell desktop in my house that works for doing.....well not much. I just have it as a hub where my printer/modem/router is. It's slow when i go on the internet, but oddly every so often when i want to play Final Fantasy XI it works perfectly. It's once if those things I don't need, but don't really need to get rid of, so it just sits there.

Also I'd say i wish that google stuff all leads to hall time for the scum that runs the show, since their private spying efforts should get them sent to the gallows, but they'll just pay a bribe, and no once actually hurt by them will get any justice.

40 Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat continues to maintain his low-energy lifestyle. I think it would be a good idea if I moved my evening reading into the bedroom and sat near him, to keep him company.

As for Wolf, the late black cat . . . I've got to call the pet care people this morning. (Look at me using euphemisms.) I keep thinking I should be the one to bring him from the vet to the crematory shop. Making a phone call, giving them my credit card number, is far too much like ordering a product online. They'll take care of him, I'm sure; they are very nice people and have always been great to deal with. I just wonder.

Dell has the best user and service manual system I have found to date. Plus their service tag system allows you to enter a machine into its database and get every single driver and support file you need for a machine even if it's 20 years old. How do I know cuz I have these records in their database and and it's a one of the reasons why I keep buying their machines over the decades. The only other company to date that I have found that has anything close to as good as this is Canon.

I will not let the heavy hand of government force Floridians to take a shot. That violates their constitutional rights, infringes on their medical freedom, and threatens their livelihoods.

We will hold a Special Session to fight for Floridians' freedom. #DontTreadOnFlorida

Yep, they know that the vast majority of the American public are ignorant sheep who will believe anything they say. They deliberately lie or are vague in everything they say, banking on the fact that the American public will either believe it or come to their own ridiculous conclusions.

i.e. the poll that came out where the majority of the public believed that the number of blacks shot by police in a typical year was 1000+... when the actual number was 9. These assholes are going to continue lying, because it works. They are going to continue lying until the American public finally wakes up, gets informed and stops believing their propaganda.

And then another and another and another.
I'm looking forward to the number of vaxxed people plummeting on websites that purport to keep track of the numbers. At, say, midnight, x number of days after all those people's second shot--depending on which make of shot was their second, and which was their first, and the amount of time between the two. Not happening!

147 I will second the comment on Dell documentation. I had until recently a number of older Dell laptops, and it was always easy to get the information needed.

When my college age daughter stepped on her laptop (despite my admonishment that "the floor is not a shelf!"), the Dell service manual allowed me to install a eBay-purchased replacement screen on her laptop at a cost of about $100 for the screen and an hour's work. Would have cost a lot more had I gone with a professional repair shop.

Posted by: Grog at October 25, 2021 10:11 AM (KXXqc)

148 I have a Dell desktop model that I bought refurbished for around $US250. It works perfectly well and does everything I want. Of course, I'm not a video developer or gamer, so my needs are modest. But still, it works and I am content. And yes, speaking as a tech writer (I've published any number of manuals and books over the years), Dell's documentation is outstanding.

As for Google: Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
