A Whale Of AN ONT

Howdy Horde! Apologies in advance, gonna be a short one tonight, my parents are visiting and I'm also trying to get ready for the TxMoMe tomorrow. Lets see what the ONT drawer of madness holds, shall we?

Product Review Of The Week

Click through and read the whole thing. It's hilarious.

Good News?

Inside TSMC, the Taiwanese chipmaking giant that's building a new plant in Phoenix

How many of y'all think that the current supply chain issues are going to drive businesses back from overseas? That's not what this is, of course, but it's similar. Frankly, it makes a lot of sense. If I were a Taiwanese company, and I saw the feckless “leadership” of Brandon along with the Reds looking hungrily across the Straight of Formosa, I'd be building factories in America and the West too.

Little Bitch

George Takei calls William Shatner an ‘unfit’ guinea pig after spaceflight

So last week William Shatner became the oldest human to go into space. Takei took the opportunity to take a shot at Shatner. This is a feud that goes back decades. I don't know any of the people involved personally, but Shatner has always seem pretty chill and Takei a grandstanding drama queen. Some say it goes back to Takei feeling that his character Sulu was being slighted on the original Star Trek. Dude, Sulu was never more than an interchangeable bit player. They replaced him with a wannabe Beetle with a bad Russian accent for heaven's sake. Others say that aggressively gay Takei wanted a taste of the captain's log, IYKWIMAIKYD, but aggressively hetero Shatner rejected him. I don't know where the real story lies, but to me the whole feud seems about like this:

”Band Kids Have It Easy”

For anyone who ever thought that the band kids didn't work as hard at their craft as the football team does at theirs, I give you the The Fightin' Texas Aggie Cadet Corps.

New Zealand city fires $16,000 a year wizard

Christchurch Council has fired their wizard. Dude's done alright, he's made $368,000 over the past 23 years, but I hope no Balrogs show up at the city gates. There could be trouble.

Thursday Night Quiz

One more album.jpg

Lets have 2 categories for this question. #1 Bands that you would just have to reunite #2 Bands that you wish you could reunite but can't because some of the members have died. In category 2, I think I'd really like to see Led Zeppelin perform live. I would put CCR on the list here too. How about you?

The Media

The Media’s Agenda is Not to Mislead People, But to Demoralize Them

“Nobody believes the press anymore,” said Newman. “The point is not to make people believe these absurdities anymore. The point now is to demoralize people and to really silence us.”
He pointed to the example of the FBI and DOJ being sicked on parents, who are now being demonized as domestic terrorists merely for speaking out against Critical Race Theory brainwashing and mask mandates in schools.
“AG Garland said all these parents are intimidating and harassing school boards. What could be more intimidating than sicking one of the world’s most powerful law enforcement agency on parents expressing their concern? I can’t think of more things that would be more intimidating than that. So, the irony is off the charts, but the goal here is to silence people into submission.”
The author noted how the establishment relies on keeping people constantly black pilled and isolated so they never even attempt to resist tyranny, no matter what the odds.
“They trot out these people to demoralize us and to scare us and make us think that everything is over. Just keep your head down and comply, but it’s not working.”

Source: Infowars, so make of it what you will, but I am reminded of George Orwell (Actually, I am reminded of George Orwell a lot lately):

“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” - George Orwell*

That being said, I've heard from people who've dealt with him that Shatner is a monumental pain in the ass when the cameras aren't rolling so the feud probably does cut both ways.

I know that many of you were disappointed that you couldn't get turkey for Thanksgiving this year. Frankly, the Biden Economy is doing so gosh-darn well that there was far more demand for turkey than usual, so we ran out.

Because of this, the available turkey supplies had to be prioritized to critical areas: Washington DC, Manhattan, San Francisco, and blue cities generally.

Frankly, meat is bad for you, so you should be shifting to a plant-based diet anyway. You need to lower your expectations, and stop whining.

Contrary to rumor, we expect that bread supplies will be adequate for Christmas - if Trumpist wreckers and saboteurs are kept from destroying our economy. All available FBI agents are being assigned to protect our bread supplies from these Trumpist vermin.

And remember, we raised the chocolate ration from thirty grams to twenty grams last week!

Their choices are (in order of desirability) 1) USA, 2) Japan, 3) S. Korea, or 4) Europe. S. Korea has its own problems with aggressive commies, and Euros are lazy, unless you go Eastern Europe. Japan is good, but expensive, and the Japanese work ethic isn't what it once was. Thus, I'd say they made the right choice.

93 I was in marching band in high school, and even that was a lot of work, but it was worth it. I mean, after away games, the football players rode home on a dark bus full of other sweaty football players. The band kids rode home on the same bus as the cheerleaders and the majorettes. We knew the score.

144 My oldest is a freshman and marches with a sousaphone aka marching tuba. He works his tail off. Doing the foot game halftime show is the least of what they do. There are these marching band competitions and that is what they really train for. I have discovered that it is a big deal, a really big deal in Texas. Texas has most of the top HS marching bands in the country. Have I mentioned that it is extremely competitive. It is a huge production, tens of Thousands of dollars are raised by boosters and spent to have shows designed and choreographed. They hire movement teachers and choreographers to come teach the kids. Some schools will spend upwards of $60,000 or more for a show. I've even heard of much more being spent.
But, my son loves it! It's a good group of kids with involved parents. We have 2 more big shows to attend this year.

167 I realize, have long ago accepted, and made my peace with: death is a part of life. Doesn't mean it doesn't suck from a mortal perspective.

Lost my 101yo Mom in August. Her estate is settling this week. Rough waters. To put it simply, family dealings are not always familial.

Yesterday, dear Daughter Jo miscarried, at about three weeks. Heartbreaking. Also that great hardship: she & hub will have to start all over again. She's strong. Her mother's, grand-, and great-grandmother's daughter.

On top of which, today was deathwatch day for our 20yo "Old Gray Lady," Spirit. She gave up the ghost this evening. Bestest kitteh! A little Spirit has gone out of all of us. Down to just two kittehs now.
😰😽💔

"...but something touched me deep inside, the day that Spirit died. And they were singing..."

It is our will that yours be done, dear Father.

The left has a minimum of 3 and more likely 4 or 5 and they actually engage in physical political violence for fun.

190 133 > I just don't get why lil' bitch Takei had to say anything. Let The Shat have his moment, jeez.

From what I've heard, Shat was pretty well loathed by multiple cast members during the filming of the OG Star Trek.

That said, it's been 50 years. Let it go, Takei.
Posted by: bonhomme at October 21, 2021 09:33 PM (UW2ZS)

I get the Shatner hate from the rest of the cast, but Shatner also did yeoman's work hustling to keep the series going, and also working the nascent convention circuit to keep the fanbase active after the series went kaput. If anything, it was his hustle that set the rest of the cast up for life when the movies started up in the 70s.

As to Shatner vs Takei, I always heard Shatner was a prim-a-dona and initially sided with Takei and the rest of the secondary characters from the original series. But as time has marched on, I seen Shatner fess up to his faults and be gracious to the others. I've seen nothing but pettiness and venom from Takei.

239 Real life George Takei story:

I attended a college where George Takei's brother was a professor. He was a philosophy professor, a kind gentleman, and both well-respected and well-liked. His brother George came to campus to give a lecture about being an actor and being on Star Trek, etc. Word on the street the next day was that he was out trolling the college-kid bars for boys, and was, umm, kindly asked to leave. Keep in mind this was 30-some years ago, before he was an out-gay and before gayness was somehow equal to godliness, and it was at a rural college in a very conservative area.

I didn't have his brother for any classes, but folks who did said that in the following days, he was apologetic, and George never did another speaking event at that school, at least not in the years I was there.

It's a young man's game and I am content if they even still play their classic stuff with any fire if I see them live in the present day. 266 > Is it a 'prop gun' if it fires live rounds and kills people?

The one that killed Brandon Lee had a stuck bullet in the barrel. The blank the prop guys loaded in the gun built enough pressure to fire a lethal shot.

If things are running properly, the prop master has control of the guns until just before the scene is shot, then the prop master retrieves the guns as soon as the scene is done. They're supposed to check everything carefully.

I suspect this wasn't the case because Alec Baldwin is a MASSIVE asshole and who's going to tell that fucking twat "no?"

He was probably goofing around and everyone was cringing and Baldwin was enjoying everyone's discomfort.

275 By the way, I mentioned the old novel Camilla earlier. It's 23 fucking hundred pages long on my e-reader app. That likely doesn't translate to 2300 paper pages, but it's still a fucking doorstop, AND a good 1700+ of the pages could have been cut if people actually sat down and talked to each other.

Of course, I read all 2300 pages, so I guess I'm the real problem here.

316 If I remember rightly, none of the supporting cast had any problem with Shatner, Nimoy, or Kelley during or after the show ended. There was a book released during the time between the end and before the conventions and movies started that had a section on what the actors were doing. Takei was doing political and theater work and the others seemed to be doing well too. Nothing happened until the conventions started and the crowds started showing interest in them. They started thinking they were more than occasional players. This thinking was echoed by Nimoy and Shatner in the "Mind Meld" dvd that came out a few years after the movies ended. Everything was fine until they started being courted by the conventions. Even Nimoy had bad relations with un-named co-stars.

I think that's the real reason for the Takei-Shatner feud. Walter Koenig seemed to take that position too when he appeared on Shatner's Raw Nerve program. Looks like he and Shatner made up and now get along. They thought they were more important than they were, but didn't care until the conventions and movies gave them that impression.

Then a couple more and hit the books. IT is not the same show for the past 70 years. A lot of the same elements because you can only do so much. Posted by: klaftern at October 21, 2021 10:24 PM (taPSh)

Tech Sergeant Chen/ Fred Kwan was intended to be a parody of Sulu, and that's one of the great stories about the making of that film. They had all the parts cast and were ready to start filming, but still didn't have anyone hired for Tech Sergeant Chen. Then they found out that Tony Shaloub was available, so they immediately went to him and got him to sign on.

As soon as he got there, not being asian, they realized that none of the lines they had in the script worked anymore, so they threw that part out. Out of desperation came genius - they asked Shaloub if he could come up with a character, and if would like to write all of his own lines. He loved the idea! And that's how brilliant, goofy, laid back Tech Sergeant Chen was born. (and it's a testament to Shaloub's talent)

398 @316 If I remember rightly, none of the supporting cast had any problem with Shatner, Nimoy, or Kelley during or after the show ended.

-------

I don't think this is entirely true. Tim Allen's character in Galaxy Quest - particularly the character's ego - is supposed to be based in part off of Shatner, and Shatner even joked about the character when commenting on the movie. What I've heard is that the problems were more ignorance on Shatner's part than anything else, and he didn't realize what was going on until after the show ended.

In any case, based on what I've heard he supposedly made up with the rest of the case afterwards - except for apparently Doohan (Scotty), and Takei. I don't know what all happened between Shatner and Doohan. But it seems pretty clear that Takei is holding a grudge that he should have put to rest a very long time ago.

They might have felt something during TOS, but they came in once, maybe twice a week, while S,N,K were there everyday. Sure, if you come in that little and have part of your scenes cut, you might get miffed. But, they weren't the reason people watched. The Kirk, Spock, McCoy triad was the reason.

Shatner, Nimoy, and I guess Koenig believe the convention stuff is when the feuding started. And Takei couldn't get over it. Neither could Doohan.

You're right about Shatner not noticing I guess as he admitted it during the Raw Nerve segments with Koenig.

hot as you can stand it Epsoms Salts is traditional. You might try changing the type of antibiotic, or get a sulfa based one instead.
Some people have luck with drawing salve, (ichthammol & pine tar) and really scrubbing it with soap and betadine might do something as well.

One thing I used to do when I got infections like that was heat it and squeeze it to try and pop it. It hurts like hell and probably is the worst thing to do, but if you can drain the pus it heals up.

450 "there was a school of thought that believed that Uhura's full name was Uhura Vahara, which is Swahili for "free love"."

According to google translate, it means "Uhura Vahara." But in the late 1960s, every phrase in every language meant "free love." Or "Tricky Dick." One or the other.

And I disregard Alex Jones because he's too stupid to realize that saying someones children aren't really dead, it was just a false flag and their bodies don't exist, is obviously going to create an obscene amount of hostility towards him. And the occasional sane take he gives will be completely disregarded because of his conspiracy mongering BS.

I was just reading some commentary on another forum about the Baldwin shooting. Some guy was talking about how they have very strict procedures regarding weapons use on movie sets. All sort of chain-of-custody shit, and multiple checking to make sure a weapon is safe.

That is, the prop master has to sign a document saying the weapon he's releasing is safe to be used. And then, another chain of people who have to double check that before handing it off to the actor.

All this is to avoid such "real bullets instead of blanks" accidents.

Re: Kirk versus Sulu

There's is animosity between those two going back decades. For whatever reason those two don't like each other, but to be fair Shatner has shown himself to be extremely petty as well. There's a story about a scene shot for one of the Trek films where Sulu is being promoted to Captain but Shatner underplayed the scene so much it was cut from the final film denying Takei his big moment onscreen.

I don't understand it but it is what it is.

If he wasn't willing to congratulate Shatner on his trip Takei should have just kept his idiot mouth shut.

Anyway...it's late. I'm tired. I've got to get up early to get a load going out. My sincerest wish for the 'Rons and 'Ettes attending the TXMoMe is simply to have the best time imaginable. I think in Lee's case it was an actual bullet, they took the powder out of a casing, which resulted in a squib load and no one realized they needed to clear the barrel. A blank then accelerated the bullet that was still sitting in the barrel.

At most reenactments, we were forbidden from drawing ramrods during "battle" for this specific reason - too easy to get the adrenaline going and forget to remove the ramrod from the barrel. The loading process involved dumping powder down the barrel and tapping the buttplate on the ground. Not realistic, but safe, and the spectators 50 or 60 yards away couldn't tell the difference.

If that's the case, it's a case of gross negligence and ignorance of basic gun safety. Which, given Hollywood, is par for the course. When I was an extra on "1941", I chatted with a guy who was on a number of the other locations. He remarked that during the scene where the bomb rolls off the plane, the explosion was so powerful that people were knocked off their feet at a hundred yards away. Cut to a few years later and the "Twilight Zone" scandal, and I was unsurprised that the SPFX guys had managed to blow a helicopter out of the sky.

From wiki: (Character fires at Lee as he walks into the room)
In the scene preceding the fatal scene, the gun was loaded with improperly-made dummy rounds, cartridges from which the special-effects crew had removed the powder charges, so in close-ups the revolver would show normal-looking bullets. However, the crew neglected to remove the primers from the cartridges. At some point before the fatal event, one of the rounds had been fired; although there was no powder charge, the energy from the fired primer was enough to push the bullet into the gun barrel, where it got stuck. For the fatal scene, which called for the revolver to be fired at Lee from a distance of 12-15 ft, the dummy cartridges were replaced with blank rounds, which contained a powder charge and primer, but no bullet, allowing the gun to be fired without the risk of an actual projectile. When the blank round was fired, the bullet lodged in the barrel was propelled forward with almost the same force as if the round were live, and it struck Lee in the abdomen.

With the 2.0-kW system, the engine sends power to a pair of 120-volt, three-prong outlets in the truck bed. This system provides up to 2,000 watts of power to anything plugged into them, which is a significant upgrade over the 400 watts of energy available from most truck bed outlets. General applications at this level of power could include light construction projects, landscaping, tailgating, and camping. $995.00

Remember you are responsible for every round for every trigger pull. Intended or not. Failures are your responsibility too. Hang fires squibs carry bad possibilities. Know the condition of your weapon before you pull the trigger. Have fun at the mome.

IIRC, there aren't supposed to be any more actual firearms on a regular set. They are either blank firing props that can't be loaded with real or "dummy rounds," non-firing with "dummy round" props, or rubber non-blank, non-firing prop guns. Oh, and the Lee/Crow mishap wasn't the last fuckup since but all productions had to tighten up since.

When I was SGT MAJ for the Army of the Willamette, at a reenactment battle at Ft. Stevens we had retreated "off stage" as we had lost. With me, were an officer of the 2nd US Sharpshooters and one of his soldiers. The soldier said that he'd had an issue with a hang fire, and the officer told him to deal with it. I was paying attention to the exchange, because when the soldier went to open the breech of his rifle, he pointed the muzzle right at my face. I grabbed the barrel of his rifle and pointed it in a safe direction, gave him a few, choice, brief words, looked his officer in the face and said, "See to your man". That was the way of it.

635 RIP Neal Peart, but not only.do I not want Rush back together, I firmly believe they should have split in 1988 or 89, formed three more groups. Amicably, of course, with occasional tours as Rush. They ran out of fresh ideas by then, and new blood could have done wondrous things.

Geddy Lee put out a solo album in 2000. Still performing as a "singing bassist, guitar, drums" three-piece. Writing credits were shared with guitarist Ben Mink. Mink has done everything from pop music (k.d. lang, Rush, Heart), to film scores, to klezmer.

The album was called My Favorite Headache, and..... it wasn't really that good. #52 on Billboard.

671 Seriously how the hell is live ammunition even near a movie set? How are you handed a gun and you can't verify it is loaded with blanks or live ammunition.

Know the condition of your weapon at all times. Treat every gun as if it were loaded. Always point your gun in the direction of least danger. Never place your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire. Never fire at a target until it has been identified as well as the backstop. A baldwin violated several of the rules! Several.

677 Start out on the assumption that, since it's a Western, the firearm would be something like a Colt Peacemaker, or possibly an earlier Colt Navy (percussion cap w/ball). Depends on the time period depicted, and also how historically accurate.

Can't imagine what went wrong. Somebody really screwed the pooch. As often happens, usually more than one error. A series of fuck ups compounding.

Or, Baldwin just wanted to kill someone. That certainly can't be ruled out.
