Joe Manchin: I Might Quit the Democrat Party

RedState has this quote from David Corn from Mother Jones:

In recent days, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) has told associates that he is considering leaving the Democratic Party if President Joe Biden and Democrats on Capitol Hill do not agree to his demand to cut the size of the social infrastructure bill from $3.5 trillion to $1.75 trillion, according to people who have heard Manchin discuss this. Manchin has said that if this were to happen, he would declare himself an "American Independent." And he has devised a detailed exit strategy for his departure.

Manchin also said he would not support any Green New Deal tax on carbon:

Manu Raju
@mkraju

Manchin tells a group of us he's NOT in favor of a carbon tax. And that's not being discussed right now. Says he wants infrastructure billl passed and talks ongoing

"No, no we are not talking about that," Manchin said. He added later: "A carbon tax is not on the board at all."

Democrat Senator Jon Tester also said he wasn't sold on a carbon tax.

Note that the Democrats' spending plans also include huge tax increases. And it's the tax increases which give them the space to claim the spending will not add to the deficit. If the taxes are cut, then the spending must be cut as well.

At least, a naive person would imagine that. A less naive person would say the Democrats would just keep their spending at historic levels and add to the deficit and just stop saying the bill will not add to the deficit.

A non-naive person would say they'll spend, add to the deficit, but continue to insist the bill does not add to the deficit anyway, knowing the DNC operatives in the media will never contradict them.

Democrats have suddenly lowered their demand from $3.5 trillion to a mere $2 trillion.

Maybe due to realizing that Manchin isn't budging, and if he does budge, it's to abandon the party.

"We're getting there. The gaps are closing. The vibe in our caucus is different. Folks are being more clear-eyed about: 'We've got to get this done,'" said Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), who is close to Biden. "There's a lot of reasons why these next 10 days are critical. To chip shot this into December is really, really problematic."

Democrats are also getting more specific, with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) tossing a carbon tax and a green utilities program overboard while insisting on means testing much of the bill. Biden also told progressives Tuesday that an expanded boost to the child tax credit could be made shorter and that free community college could be jettisoned.

Biden's price tag for the bill at the moment is around $2 trillion and he wants to lock down an agreement before heading overseas at the end of this month for climate talks, according to Democrats familiar with Tuesday's discussions.

And, from the weekend: Maria Batiromo says she's hearing that Nancy Pelosi intends this "Human infrastructure" bill to be her last great triumph, and that she'll announce her resignation after it passes.

I don't know. I figure she's a My Cold Dead Cryptkeeper Handjob Hands type of gal.

I still think this whole thing is failure theater. It's to wrap it around Manchin and protect people like Tester (but more importantly people like Kelly, Warnock, Masto, and Hassan who are up for re-election in 2022) from tough votes that will not go well for them.

Because DC has acted for a long, long time like it doesn't. They've acted like currency is - more or less - like the King issuing orders, but it's easier to just print dollars than write out orders.

I think that's the deal - and the joke is on dumb asses like me that have piled currency up in banks. Because that shit, I have come to believe, has no value. It's about as valuable as written out promises from the King. If he would have bothered to take the time to do so.

Video: 150 San Fran Families Hire Private Security as Crime Tsunami Overwhelms Local Police

Some residents of San Francisco are so fed up with having their property broken into and items stolen that they have hired a private security firm to patrol their streets at night.
A number of residents in the misgoverned city's Marina District told KPIX-TV that their beachfront neighborhood has seen a rash of burglaries and car break-ins in recent months. In response, they're paying a police-commissioned Patrol Special Officer named Alan Byard to check in on them throughout the night.
A woman in the neighborhood identified as Katie Lyons told the outlet that alarms and cameras have failed to deter criminals - many of whom have been seen breaking into cars in broad daylight - and that hiring private security was out of necessity.
"Especially at night, I don't walk with a purse, I'll drive, or I'll take an Uber, and it's beginning to become a daytime problem too," Lyons said.
...Byard charges each client $65 per month, and he makes his rounds from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Only in a 50/50 Senate would he hold any sway. Once it goes back to normal (not 50/50) he'll never again serve on a committee with Ds in charge having blocked 3.5T.

And Rs wouldn't put him on a committee having voted for 1.9 or 1.5T. He would literally have no power ever again.

As for Manchin, if he really felt this way he would have left thre dems years ago, it's not like WV is a Dem strong hold. He always used his vote as a way to get stuff, and now he's not getting his way. The only way his leaving the party means anything is if he caucuses with the Republicans, though i have a feeling that would cause a Republican senator or two to also leave the party, turn independent, and caucus with the Dems to make sure they keep power.

191 Part of the reason Dems were toying with the $600 IRS thing (and refusing to move it to some number less obviously bad) was because it had a budgeting estimate of $200 Billion in increased revenue (over 10 years or whatever).

Two hundie billion in increased revenue w/o actually raising taxes was/is necessary if they have any sort of chance to meet Manchin/Sinema stated deal conditions and also pretend debt neutral. I haven't seen a revised revenue estimate for switching from $600 to $10k, like has been recently reported, but I assume it can't (plausibly) still be $200 billion.

It's for my daughter's marching band. We have our busy schedule coming up, including a trip to San Antonio (from DFW area) then Indianapolis. The reefers are for heat requirements. We have xylophones and vibes along with drums that need to keep temperatures in the 70's. Reefers need to be 26 ft trucks and non CDL requirements to fit the percussion equipment and the sleepers are for our two semi trailers. We have 2 day cabs currently, but need the sleepers to have our drivers make the long trip to Indy as efficient as possible.

We already have nearly $30 trillion in public debt, and hundreds of trillions more in unfunded liabilities in entitlement programs like Medicare and SS, and our southern border is being overrun by millions of third-world poor and criminals, and this is what our damn lawmakers are doing? Arguing about how many trillions more dollars -- dollars that we don't have -- they can spend this year on "free" government giveaways and nonsensical programs that we don't need and can't afford?

It's criminally irresponsible, and it's f*cking maddening that we don't have a media who will point out this simple fact to the public.

The Panama canal was built before manufacturing cheap knock offs in Asia to supply the west was a thing. It was meant to get European goods to the West. It was made obsolete in the 70's when Carter turned it over to the Panamanians - a relic to a past life.

It would be resurrected if we could squeeze Chinese imports, but the Chinese actually appear to own a significant chuck of it now - so just fill it in.

Politics is transactional.

Have you read Trump's book? He was clearly a liberal Democrat. Gun grabber, pro-choice, pro-socialized medicine. Said at a GOP debate he liked Scotland's health care system and wouldn't defund Planned Parenthood. And then there was the constant stimulus and baillouts as President.

Still way better than the TruCon act we were getting from the GOP.
