  • Apple announced the new 14" and 16" MacBook Pro models based on the new M1 Pro and M1 Max CPUs. (AnandTech)

These CPUs are what the original M1 needed to be and what the Tame Apple Press pretended it was.

For background, the M1 has 4 fast cores, 4 slow cores, and 8 GPU cores, with a 128-bit memory bus and up to 16GB of RAM.

The M1 Pro has 8 fast cores, 2 slow cores, and 16 GPU cores, with a 256-bit bus and up to 32GB of RAM. For all intents and purposes, its double the M1; the slow cores don't matter a great deal except when your laptop is idle.

The M1 Max raises the stakes further; the CPU is the same as the M1 Pro, but it has 32 GPU cores and a 512-bit bus with up to 64GB of RAM.

In fact it's mostly GPU; the die photo looks more like a PlayStation or Xbox chip than a typical laptop CPU. It has 57 billion transistors, which is more than a high end desktop CPU and graphics card combined. That's possible because Apple has basically bought out TSMC's 5nm production capacity.

But TSMC's rapid growth and the 5nm process itself have basically been funded by Apple's shiny toys, so I can't complain about that too much.

The problem is, while this is one of the fastest mainstream laptops around, it only runs MacOS, and Apple's guiding corporate principle is controlling everything its users do. In a few short years they've taken MacOS from possibly the most developer-friendly operating system around to one that I take pains to avoid.

The other problem is that this technology is only possible because the CPU, GPU, and memory are sandwiched onto a single unreplaceable and unrepairable module. You can't upgrade the RAM, you can't opt for less CPU and more GPU. You get what you're given.

Oh, and no Four Essential Keys either.

The 16" MacBook Pro is probably better than my Dell Inspiron 16 Plus, but with the same configuration - 8 CPU cores, 32GB RAM, 1TB of SSD, and on the Dell, an RTX 3060 - it costs exactly twice as much.

Tech News

  • We already know that AMD's Rembrandt APUs - most probably with 8 Zen 3+ CPU cores and 12 RDNA2 graphics cores - are coming early next year. Those are likely single-chip devices just like their current laptop chips.

Coming up after that is Raphael which will bring 16 core CPUs with integrated graphics to laptops. (WCCFTech)

This isn't expected for 15 months and we don't know much about it yet, but it appears that all of AMD's next-gen CPUs will have integrated graphics, and low-power models of the desktop chips will be sold for high-end laptops.

  • A person or persons unknown hijacked the Tor nodes used by the REvil ransomware group. (Bleeping Computer)

Apparently they got control of the domains and have the hacker group's private keys and payment data.

Sometimes bad things also happen to bad people.

  • How to enable Windows 11's God Mode. (Bleeping Computer)

Not God Complex, mind you. That's enabled by default and indeed no-one has yet found a way to turn it off.

God Mode gives you a single window with every possible configuration option available. Which, since I cannot currently change the brightness of my secondary display for some reason, might come in handy.

9 Apple announced the new 14" and 16" MacBook Pro models based on the new M1 Pro and M1 Max CPUs.
---
The performance of these new machines is quite good. I saw an early geek bench result. These new CPUs are pumping out about 1,750 single core scores and about 11,500 multi-core. Benchmarks are somewhat useful for relative comparisons between various machines. He recent Dell XPS 15 core i9 is yielding about 7500 multi-core score. Does this mean the Apple products are 50% better? No not at all. What makes a machine useful is if it does what you need it to at a price that you're willing to pay. Still I think Apple has forged a new paradigm for silicon that will be adopted going forward. The most interesting number I found is the battery life. Apple is claiming that they get upwards of 20 hours on a single charge and that is a very useful statistic. By any measure these are pretty brilliant pieces of computing hardware. Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD have some serious work ahead of them. And in case you're wondering how expensive they are a fully maxed out machine runs about $6,000. Yikes!

Posted by: LostInSpace at October 19, 2021 03:14 AM (ESLBo)

10 Another thought about these new Apple machines. Everything Apple has been stripping out of machines over the last 5 to 7 years they put back into this current one. But Apple can't just do things like that without screwing something else up intentionally. This time they put a notch in the middle of the top row of the screen. I call it the virtue signaling notch. With that everybody in the coffee shop can see that you're rocking the most expensive hardware from 75 ft away.

Posted by: LostInSpace at October 19, 2021 03:19 AM (ESLBo)

11 Apple is claiming that they get upwards of 20 hours on a single charge and that is a very useful statistic.

That's on a video playback test, and only if you're watching video in Apple's own format for which it has hardware decoding. Battery life in general is good, but not that good.

Posted by: Pixy Misa at October 19, 2021 03:25 AM (MqQvv)

12 Your point on the actual battery life is well taken. My rule of thumb is the actual battery life is about half the claim.

14 Mornin', all,

Went to bed a little earlier last night and got almost 8 hours' sleep. The odd thing was that I thought I'd awakened after about 4 hours -- the watch I'm wearing indicated that, I thought, and I tried to slip back to sleep. No good. I sat up, and realized my watch had stopped almost 4 hours earlier. This is not one of my 2 trusty vintage Rolexes, but a Swiss brand of automatic called Steinhart with a good rep, and this is the second time in a month it has stopped overnight. Do I have to wind the darn thing each night before I go to sleep, to make sure it will stay powered?

The odd thing: I wore this watch almost 23 hours a day while I was evacuated for Hurricane Ida, and it never stopped and kept excellent time.

The police are agents of the state and not the people and will execute the orders of the state.

So this idea that the police are some independent, free range law enforcement guild needs to be squashed.

If the state tells them to smash kulak heads, they smash kulak heads, if the state tells them to give space to destroy to the states paramilitary goons, they give space.

It's really that simple.

And is built twice as better, will last twice as long and have more useful service period than any current WinTel or WinAMD laptop.

The biggest hurdle to getting an M1 Mac for me is that there are no ARM versions of Microsoft Project or AutoCAD.

And besides my 2015 Intel MacBook Pro is working just fine so unless it decides to go tits up I can easily get another 5 years o service out of it.

That is unless Apple or Microsoft don't do something stupid, which is not a certainty.

70 "In a few short years they've taken MacOS from possibly the most developer-friendly operating system around to one that I take pains to avoid."

They've taken it *back* around. This was the earliest complaint about Apple machines: the OS was locked out and you dealt with what you got when you bought it. Eventually M$ decided that was a good model to go with.....

72 What are the Four Essential Keys?

Posted by: Idontgetit at October 19, 2021 09:22 AM (soDSR)

73 Another major problem with anything new on the Mac is how it'll have some catastrophic failure point in it, that they have no idea how to fix, so they'll just string you along for 3 years and then claim your product is obsolete and can't be fixed, leaving you with a $4,000 headache that you only had possession of 12 out of the 36 months you owned it.

Anyone wanting one, and expecting to use it at even 75% of its potential, should wait until the 5th generation comes out.

Posted by: Rbastid at October 19, 2021 09:27 AM (U8c2P)

74 I thought the 4 Essential Keys were. the arrow keys in inverted T format? The new Macbook Pro's have that.

As for the notch, what it looks like they did was remove the top bezel that used to run across the entire top of the monitor, except for the center section which holds the camera module. Then they stuck the menu bar up into that area, so you gain real estate. For full screen apps they just blank out everything to the side of the notch and it's like any other laptop.

On Mac, the menu bar is at the top of the screen and windows don't normally have a menu bar at all, unlike windows, so the menu bar is actually more consistent.

The new machines look pretty incredible. They are fast, but with far less battery impact. That's really where Apple has the advantage: Intel and AMD might be able to match them speed wise, but they can't match the speed to battery life and heat impact.

Good points: probably immune to any malware attacks from today and unable to use the internet in any fashion. Less distracting. Bad points: likely less computing power than my watch.
