Colin Powell Dies of Covid Complications

He was fully vaccinated, but was also living with a blood cancer called multiple myeloma, in which the cancer infects the white blood cells. Those of course are critical in fighting infection.

I earlier noted that NeverTrumpers are cultists for George W. Bush and his administration.

Here's AllahPundit spreading cult doctrine about Colin Powell:

In a slightly different timeline, Powell runs for president as a Republican in 1996 and becomes the first black major-party nominee. Maybe even the first black president.
His legacy still includes important "firsts" -- the first black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the first black Secretary of State. He'll be remembered today by the professional commentariat as a distinguished soldier and statesman and by the online commentariat on both sides as something of a villain. The left won't forgive him for selling the Iraq war to the United Nations based on bad intelligence, the right won't forgive him for having supported Democrats like Barack Obama in his later years as the GOP turned more populist.

Powell endorsed Obama over McCain in 2008 and then endorsed Obama over Romney in 2012.

Were McCain and Romney "populists," Liberal New Yorker?

Or are you now retroactively applying current cult doctrine to decades past?

Colin Powell will not be endorsing any more Democrats.

He will, of course, continue voting for them.

The two people I know that have died of Covid, were on deaths door. One was on a ventilator for a week before becoming covid positive and then death. Even with perfect hindsight, I do not know what we should have done about Covid. I guess I would argue for just keeping everything normal, no masks etc. No 2 weeks to blah blah blah.
But for sure paying hospitals for quote unquote covid deaths. That was a rookie error. We all know that paying someone money for X increases that X.

62 I still remember we had a 9th ID parade field formation at Ft.Lewis when Powell was chairman of joint chief of staff and all the other brass were on stage. We had some kind of re-affirmation of being in the Army or some such. It's a pain in the ass to have the whole division show up in one place. This takes hours, because every unit wants their people in place 1/2 hour before the successor unit. So a 9 AM division start means specialist 4 snuffy has to show up about 2 and a half hours early maybe. So Powell I think or somebody said over the PA at the re- swearing in ceremony "Everybody repeat after me "I (state your name) .... solemnly swear etc.

And several thousand people unison said "I State Your Name..." which I thought was hilarious at the time.

Mostly, my disgust with him centered around his philosophy, particularly his Powell Doctrine. He felt we have some sort of an obligation to stay around after an invasion, and turn a country into -if not the US- at least Canada or Belgium. "If you break it, you buy it," he famously said.

The stupid part of that is, we only invaded a country that was already broken. Afghanistan in 2001 was irretrievably broken. Iraq a couple years later was the same. We didn't break them, so why would we have to buy them. Let's focus our military on military objectives, like killing bad people, and removing their leaders from office (and Earth, for that matter). Then we leave. Had we done that in Afghanistan and Iraq, we'd have saved a lot of lives, time, and money.

The Barnes and Noble hit had more reporters and cameramen jostling for position than anything I could remember up until then.

Well, in the grand scheme of things, all I will say is, he did more harm to this world than good and I hope he finds his reward in the afterlife.

I did CPR on a Civie contractor at our worksite in FRG in 1994, for 20+min, until another soldier came and assisted. Dude was 50+lbs overweight, lousy shape, and had no chance, but we kept up the routine until the Krank-wagon came, and the German doc said stop.
Me and the other dude got put in for awards, we were told Soldiers medals, for attempting to save a live - the other guy got a MSM (downgraded, I assume), I got squat - told "saving a live is part of the MP job...."

My God-son was headed to Ft Huachuca with a buddy of his after leave. they came across a wrecked car with a mother and baby inside. They freed both and took them to the nearest town and doctor. After giving a statement to the police, they continued their journey. I heard about it and sent their commander a letter recommending some kind of recognition. I don't think it rose to the level of a SM but certainly a MSM or ARCOM. Both got an Army Achievement Medal.

I get the feeling that they've tried to declare victory more than once. When the CDC announced a few months ago that PCR tests were effectively worthless (right about the time that Disney was complaining about the same thing regarding its ability to start their cruise ships again), I thought it was a signal to everyone to stop reporting on cases.

I expect we will see some numbers of sick people by January 2022 that will not be pleasant to contemplate. And they will be going up and even the media won't be able to hide them.

I agree. I've said before that the Iraq invasion in 2003 was inevitable. At some point we were going to have to deal with Iraq. If not 2003, then sometime down the line. Worst case scenario is that Saddam dies, the country fractures, and we get sucked into a regional shooting war between various faction. Or, one of his sons quickly takes over and we spend another twenty or thirty years trying to maintain the embargos and no-fly zones, which were already quickly becoming political millstones by 2000.

Also, occasionally we *would* discover a cache of chemical weapons or sarin or the like.

While not earth-shattering, these *are* by definition weapons of mass-destruction. You can wreak a LOT of havoc with these.

Not just the Kurds. Everyone hated him, or feared him. There were plenty of Iraqi officers or politicians who would have jumped at the chance to remove him from power, not to mention Shia leaders, etc.

He was being "groomed" for higher command in the 1970's. He was a Whitehouse Fellow as a light Colonel, and I think he knew Rumsfeld and Cheney back then, as they were part of the Ford Administration.
All these people know each other. Nobody comes out of nowhere to rise to high office.

Not slagging on Powell, but I think he represents a LOT of 2-3-4 star flag officers from his era forward, in his attitudes and his opinions. They have weeded out a lot of officers in higher commands that have what we could call right-wing opinions. That's just the way it is.

A lot of it allegedly got hauled out of Iraq into the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, where Syria controlled the country.

There were some Sarin loaded artillery shells found mixed into stores of regular 155mm shells.
There was also (allegedly) a war gas weapons bunker out in the Western Desert of Iraq, that was mentioned during the rise of ISIS. Apparently the stuff stored there was too unstable to move or handle. We had guys just watching it.

Concur. After the ceasefire, I spent a few hours over water and cigars with the senior G-2 Analysts and the CG discussing this very thing. I told them that even if our mission was just to free Kuwait, if we didn't finish Saddam, we'd be back to do so. Key point was we had the Army to defeat them, but there was no planning on what to do afterwards. Who would run the electricty in the cities? The water and sewer? Traffic control, mail, all the crap that it takes to run a community? We were not prepared for that.
