Daily Tech News 18 October 2021

Top Story

  • Finally getting some time to set up my two new notebooks. Some quick thoughts:

    • 16:10 high-resolution IPS matte panels are really nice these days. The smaller one is 14" at 2560x1600, the larger is 16" at 3072*1920. I have an older notebook with a 3840x2160 screen, but it's a glossy finish and the colours are more muted (plus it has huge bezels). The new screens are bright and vibrant without being oversaturated.

    • Four cores, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of SSD just aren't enough for the work I do, but that's the limit of most small laptops. Fortunately the larger of the two has eight cores, 32GB of RAM, and a second M.2 slot. For the last four years I've been using an eight-core Ryzen system, and for three of those, two eight-core Ryzen systems.

I'm likely to supplement the laptops with a couple of NUCs running Linux, since I have spare RAM and SSDs just sitting around now.

    • Microsoft really wants you to sign in with an online account, and really doesn't want you to stop using Edge. I'm still using Windows 10 so it doesn't force the issue, but that day will come.

    • Disk space disappears fast and Windows doesn't tell you where it's going. Yes, sure, I did just install the entire JetBrains IDE suite, plus the Anaconda Python distro which chews up something like 3GB all by itself, but that still doesn't account for it all. And none of those apps appears on the Windows app list that tells you how much space they are using.

  • How to try Windows 11 without fucking up your working system. (Tom's Hardware)

    Bootable USB drive.

Tech News

  • Software development is an illusion; JavaScript doubly so. (Nadh.in)

The author picked up an old JavaScript UI project - six months old, that he wrote himself - and tried to get it working.

    It didn't work.

The fix for the problem caused another problem, and the fix for that broke things even more. The workaround for the fix for the fix failed because the library versions were incompatible and probably will be for a year.

The alternative was also incompatible, and the workaround for that was incompatible in a different way.

The solution to this didn't work, and the fix for the solution for the workaround for the original problem wouldn't even compile.

  • Seriously, does no-one write code anymore? (Rogulski.it)

I think at the end of all that you have something that will save a database record.

  • I guess if you have a 9000 sq ft home you can afford $1500 for a WiFi mesh solution. (Serve the Home)

Also, 10Gb to the base station and 2.5Gb to the satellites.

11 Microsoft really wants you to sign in with an online account, and really doesn't want you to stop using Edge. I'm still using Windows 10 so it doesn't force the issue, but that day will come.
---
My understanding is you must use a Microsoft account to set up Windows 11 Home or Pro. However after the fact the Pro version will allow you to set up a local account. I don't have enough understanding of why they are enforcing this choice to have an informed opinion. My own uniformed blathering thinks it's all rather heavy-handed.

As for swapping out Edge, Windows 11 got rid of the slick option to change your browser in a couple clicks. You now have to undo about two dozen file associations and jump through some other hoops. Such artificial restrictions do nothing but irritate the public. On the flip side the chances of you ever going back to Edge once you swap it out are nearly zero because it's a pain in the ass.

None of this really matters to me as a practical matter as I am deep into the Microsoft universe and will never leave. Microsoft did pay for my kid's college and afforded me a very nice life. Plus their products do what I need and want.

I guess the Gboard likes to crap out every now and then. So I had to go to the play store and "update" the Gboard.

Last week while listening to the radio, CBS News announced, in an oddly positive context, that sales at gas stations are up 38.2% from this time last year.

The stupid is strong...

Fact checkers are pointing out that world leaders will not be riding in Teslas, they will be riding in electric Range Rovers.

The only rovers that I have seen on electric ranges were cockroaches.

96 Interestingly oil and gas, while an economic driver of immense proportion to Scotland and Glasgow since the 70's also created a culture of moderate affluence, which enabled the welfare state and resulting lack of character that has destroyed the culture. Add immigration and it's the same playbook they are using in places like West Texas.

So the idea that increasing fuel prices has caused an increase in fuel usage would be plausible to them?

Yep. That is some top notch logic, there. Considering the price of gas is up 42%, I figure it as a net decline.

115 are you missing between 7gb and 9GB of storage? recently microsoft added a new feature to windows 10. they call it "reserve storage" and basically they just lock up a big chunk of space for themselves.

with 1TB or 2TB of storagw this might not be a big deal, but on a ultrabook laptop with only 32GB of storage, microsoft claiming 1/3 of all storage space is a hell of an intrusion.

you can disable it with a registry key entry but the reserved space is not released until windows update runs again.

they'll probably enable it again. after all, microsoft sees it aa their computer first, I am simply allowed to use it.

121 Re: Orbi: I picked up a used Orbi system last Spring (RBR50 and a couple of RBS50 satellites)- it's a complete piece of shit. I've had non-mesh Netgear APs- as I'm sure everyone else has- run for years without a hiccup. The Orbi craps out predictably at least every couple of days, and I have to wait 5 minutes or so for it to sort itself out. Yes, it's all patched current, and my config is not elaborate. Don't take my word for it, though, Google around- you'll find plenty of other people with the same issues.

I'd stay far away from this new Orbi until it's got some reputation behind it... especially at the price tag.
