The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Wish I could say more but this is it. So State 1034 this is the last time you’ll hear me in a state patrol car.”

“And Jay Inslee can kiss my ass,” Unidentified Washington State Trooper

Quote II

'I think anybody who's gotten one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine can benefit from a second dose of a Johnson & Johnson vaccine,' Dr. Paul Offit, a member of the FDA's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee

Quote III

"It was a curse for moment, but it had a Catch-22 silver lining, because we changed how we make stuff. It gave us an opportunity to be creative." Pat O'Neill,

Quote IV

“The mandates are pointless. Now that we know that fully vaccinated individuals are getting infected, they can transmit the disease. Unfortunately, they are being hospitalized, they’re getting seriously ill, they’re dying. There’s no point to the mandate, whatsoever.“ Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI)

Where’s your MASK Joe? Maskless Biden breathes old man GERMS all over D.C. restaurant in violation of mask MANDATE
written by J.C McCallum October 18, 2021
You know this story really speaks for itself. The elites are always about do as I say not as I do, whether it’s lecturing about climate from their private jets, tweeting at everyone to stay home while getting their hair did, or hitting the swanky social scene without a mask while MANDATING them for everyone else.

This is what Capitalism looks like.

A star Stanford professor leaves his lab for a startup out to remake psychiatry

About five years ago, Amit Etkin had a breakthrough.

The Stanford neurologist, a soft-spoken demi-prodigy who became a professor while still a resident, had been obsessed for a decade with how to better define psychiatric disorders. Drugs for depression or bipolar disorder didn’t work for many patients with the conditions, and he suspected the reason was how traditional diagnoses didn’t actually get at the heart of what was going on in a patient’s brain.

He had shown in 2006 that some patients with different diagnoses — PTSD vs. depression, for example — looked remarkably similar under brain imaging, suggesting clinicians drew distinctions in the wrong places. And in 2014, he showed that one could define patients by looking at individual discrete behaviors, such as attention or sleep.

This will be a very interesting law suit to follow.

Pentagon Faces Class-Action Lawsuit Over Vaccine Mandates on Military, Federal Employees and Contractors

Service members from all five branches of the U.S. military, federal employees, and federal civilian contractors have joined in a class-action lawsuit against the Department of Defense over its COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

The 24 plaintiffs “face a deadline under the Federal COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate to receive a COVID-19 vaccine that violates their sincerely held religious beliefs, and have been refused any religious exemption or accommodation,” according to Liberty Counsel, the Christian legal firm that filed the lawsuit.

Better late than never. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

The bride is 97. The groom is 98. The couple has been married for 77 years, and thanks to some very special folks who helped them celebrate their recent anniversary, they were finally treated to some very special wedding memories they missed out on all those years ago.

The Kings have become like family to the staff of the St. Croix Hospice who serve as caretakers for the elderly pair in their Oelwein, Idaho home. With a big anniversary coming up, their caregivers wanted to do something special to commemorate the occasion—and knowing something of the couple’s history, they came up with a perfect plan.

They especially loved the fact that Party members had their own stores, so they didn't have to stand in bread lines with the peasants, and senior Party members had even nicer stores than regular Party members.

70 32 years ago today I was offshore of the Golden Gate, checking out the repairs from the recent yard period in San Francisco.

In the wardroom was a TV set to the Worlds Series. I was out and about in my departmental spaces, so I did not see it.

We had a strange motion of the ship, most unusual for the sea condition. The ship was 677 feet long, and we were light at around only 15,000 deadweight tons.

It was the Loma Prieta earthquake. We were able to receive all the feed from the blimp and the TV stations that the out of power city could not see.

Got stories about that. The city looked almost undamaged in the 30 power Big Eyes. But we knew where to look for the scars.

My car was equidistant from the Bay Bridge Span knocked down and the Nimitz Freeway. The Oakland pier had some big cracks, but held.

And so it began.

Kitty(s) will need a nice bed, either queen or king-sized. And a couch or loveseat. Maybe a recliner would be sweet as well. Oh, and you can probably use them too, from time to time!

Our cats were happy to use our furniture. Only one had his own little bed that he preferred to the one we humans slept in. It was tucked under our bed so he felt protected and hidden.

And though she ran on the usual Soros platform (no bail requirements, dismissing misdemeanor charges, etc) she appeared in person to prosecute that dad that was at the school board meeting trying to protest his daughter being raped and sodomized and then arrested for calling someone a bitch (after she called him a liar).

He's now on probation. Sigh. Nothing but the finest political justice in the US.

"This film was shot on April 14, 1906, just four days before the San Francisco earthquake and fire, to which the negative was nearly lost. It was produced by moving picture photographers the Miles brothers: Harry, Herbert, Earle and Joe. Harry J. Miles hand-cranked the Bell & Howell camera which was placed on the front of a cablecar during filming on Market Street from 8th, in front of the Miles Studios, to the Ferry building. A few days later the Miles brothers were en route to New York when they heard news of the earthquake. They sent the negative to NY, and returned to San Francisco to discover that their studios were destroyed.

I'm reading about the sound added. That was quite a feat, where they strove for accuracy:

"Automobile sounds are all either Stanley or White steamers, Ford Model T, or Model A, which came out later, but which have similarly designed engines, and sound quite close to the various cars shown in the film. Some of the automobiles are thought to be steamers, and are dubbed as such. The horns are slightly inaccurate as mostly bulb horns were used at the time, but were substituted by the far more recognizable electric "oogaa" horns, which came out a couple years later. The streetcar sounds are actual San Francisco streetcars. Doppler effect was used to align the sounds.

However, unlike Seattle, they can't mandate that the Portland cops get vaxxed - it is considered part of the police labor contract, and requires the agreement of the police union. The virus groupies are furious over this, of course.

But when the automatic bank security controls work, it's really efficient.

My credit card got hacked (buying graduation regalia for my son, ironically), and somebody tried to buy a $150 gift card in Ohio with my card. The bank's computers noted that I've haven't been in Ohio in thirty years, declined the charge, blocked the card, and immediately e-mailed and texted me. Within twenty minutes I was on the phone with a bank security person, confirmed that all my other recent charges were valid, cancelled the card, and the bank FedExed me a new card that I got the next day.

I was impressed.

I am of mixed mind over the bank proactively shutting down parts of account. In my case, changing a cell phone carrier, could have opened the door to fraud. At the same time why and how in the hell did the bank get altered to this is of concern? This raises all kinds of questions about how much data that are holding on the down low about me that I don't know about. This is really disturbing. Add in tracking every transaction over $600.00 - you might as well publish every detail of your life and all your passwords in clear text on Facebook given how all this will trash any semblance of privacy. But that is the point isn't it.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg pushed back on some conservatives' criticism over his decision to take parental leave after the birth of his two newly adopted twins and his handling of supply chain issues.

"What we have right now is an administration that is actually pro-family," the former South Bend mayor said on MSNBC Friday. "I'm blessed to be able to experience that as an employee being able to have the flexibility to take care of our newborn children, which is by the way work. It's joyful work. It's wonderful work, but it's definitely work."

As Fox News host Tucker Carlson mused about the supply chain crisis during his Thursday night show, he mocked Buttigieg for taking paternity leave.

"Pete Buttigieg has been on leave from his job since August after adopting a child. Paternity leave, they call it, trying to figure out how to breastfeed," Carlson said Thursday, in a comment that some viewed as homophobic. "No word on how that went."

Buttigieg was asked about Carlson's comments on MSNBC Friday.

These hypersonic glide (boost and glide) vehicles follow a very type of trajectory than ICBMs. Chicoms could launch an attack from over the south pole, which we would blind to. The early warning systems are all focused on the north pole, which is where traditional missiles have to come over.

It's also maneuverable, and come in in a flatter trajectory. They could get a nuke anywhere in the US with this. Also, kill our carriers much easier.

Got the Cummins 903 in the Flxible coach fired up, and moved the beast to mow where it had sat. Spent several hours removing and replacing the fuel shutoff solenoid, which has had a quirk of sticking closed when energized. Anyway, it worked once put back on the engine, so there's that.

Next day went to hospital and was there for a week. That was the first time I realized how f**ed the insurance situation was. She was a foreign national at the time (she is now a u.s. citizen, crossing every t and dotting every i), so the hospital discounted the treatment, and we were able to get reimbursed from her Mexican insurance. 1 week in hospital with iv antibiotics (15 years ago) - $45,000. 358 Can ARC or anyone else tell me what that means, "ethically sourced weed".

I'm not going to bother to listen to the podcast, but I bet a lot of it is buying weed that flowed through a black-owned company at some point.

You see, black people were the real victims of the drug war, so you are morally obligated to make sure a back person gets a share of your dope dollar. I believe that the State has even provided funding to allow black people to get into the marijuana trade.

The joke, of course, is that investing in dope has been a fiasco - everyone assumed that it would be a gold mine, but there has been huge consolidation in the industry because the profits aren't there.

They keep pointing to the Oregon wine industry as a model, but with the exception of a few big producers, all the wineries in Oregon are run by rich people as hobby businesses. They don't have to make money.

The people that are holding on are hoping that the Feds will legalize it, so they can export - as long as they are limited to the Oregon market, the bucks aren't there.

Chekov the Ailing Codger Cat is about the same. He comes out to sit on the floor near me in the early morning, but prefers his lounging area in the bedroom. I'm treating him with the vet meds and giving him Rx food, and he purrs and is pleased by our attention. But he still moves like a very old man.

My co-worker, the one who was in the hospital, emailed that she is out -- so this probably wasn't the coof. I'll find out more today, I guess.

389 Speaking of "Let's Go Brandon," I saw a pickup truck last week that had rear window decals with those 3 words on it. Heh, heh, heh. . . .

391 Fun fact: The Mayberry street set was used in an episode of Star Trek TOS. It was the one with Joan Collins where they go back in time to pre-WWII earth, after a drug-crazed Bones alters history.

The front of Floyd's barber shop is there.

***
In an episode of The Fugitive, Dr. Kimble is seen walking down the street used in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. for the organization's headquarters. We even see the sign for the cleaner's, Del Floria's, that was the agents' entrance to the complex. When somebody pointed that out, I was inspired to write a crossover fan fiction story in which Kimble is the "innocent" (non-spy) character in an U.N.C.L.E. adventure set in 1964.

395 publius: what I want to know is, why are all the container shipping companies named Lloyd?

There's Hapag-Lloyd, P&O Nedlloyd, Norddeutscher Lloyd. Good grief.

Is it something like the use of the name Edison in regional USA power companies?

Mergers. https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Hapag-Lloyd
