Because marketing promised EON that audiences want wokeness. They did their research on Twitter.
I saw a complaint from someone who was saying that marketing had lied to them. They wanted the black agent to play a huge role in the film, potentially taking over the franchise. Instead, she's apparently a small part of it overall and it's definitely Bond's movie.
Why include that in early marketing so much? Because Twitter wanted it. The idea of the 4 quadrant appeal is dead to marketers, which is werid.

A kid's movie would work, too. A real one, with a simple story, non-destructive narrative and a couple of more grown-up things for the parents to enjoy. Pixar is the best at this, but they're not alone.

I rewatched Thunderball and the long and slow underwater scenes aren't as long and slow as I remembered.
They thought -- rightly -- that these were some amazing sequences, never before staged in a movie, and therefore were worth spending a lot of film on. And for 1965 audiences, that was correct.
As the decades have passed, the underwater sequences don't have the Wow factor they did in 1965. Still, not as slow and long as I remembered.

My problem is two fold. The first is the slowness of the action. An action scene where everyone is slowed down is weird to watch. The other is the emotional disconnect. We don't see anyone's faces clearly. Even in closeups it's unclear who we're looking at. There's this real disconnect between the audience and what's happening on screen (that's also really slow) so it becomes harder to care about who wants what MacGuffin.

In theaters, a movie can be an event. Something people need to go out and watch.
Added to a streaming channel, it's suddenly just another bit of content to wade through. It's less special and individualized to the audience. It becomes lost in the morass of stuff that Netflix puts out on a weekly basis.

I read somewhere that MI6 or CIA did a follow up with director of Thunderball after its release. They were interested in the compact breathing apparatus and wondered if it actually worked. They did not take into consideration the multiple shots of the underwater scene.

First they tried to just sell the movie wholesale to streaming services but none of them were willing to pay anywhere near as much as the studio demanded (I think the highest offer they got was about $300 million).
So they were forced to reshoot about half the movie, cut out the woke bullshit, and it still flopped because people were already turned off.

Funny I remember that movie when it first came out. My parents took me to the drive in in dad's Ford woody, I was in the back, which had enough room to play basketball. I was absolutely mesmerized by the scuba diver scene, that was some crazy shit. I didn't remember anything else about the movie but that. I remember all the adults talking about that as well. Then again, that's probably how Sea Hunt was such a popular TV show. 007 just took that up a notch with all the gadgets and so many divers at the same time.

I liked the bad guy, he was appropriately evil and murderous. Mark Strong gave him a good sense of menace and his backstory was good too.
I didn't like the two main kids at all, though the little black girl was adorable. So was the actress playing the 'grown up' Marvel version of her.

I don't think feminists see these films any more than feminists buy comic books (which is part of the reason that industry is a trash fire). Men will see a good action flick with a chick lead (despite the complaining about chick leads in these kinds of films). But they're almost universally bad films: Jolt, Gunpowder Milkshake, Kate - all spectacularly awful.

The director released a video on Youtube about the efforts to make a single little scene work that centered around the black girl (she was available for the indoor stuff but not the outdoor stuff). It's an interesting look at the chaos of trying to make sure that all the little pieces go together in a movie production.

Men will pay money to see mediocre and even inferior action movies just because they like the genre. Women will not do that. They are not that enamored of the genre.

It's been a while, I think. But I am not sure. I am so tuned out of pop culture at this point that I don't what's come out, who is in it, who any of the people are, etc. It has gotten to the point where the tabloids at the supermarket checkout almost invariably contain people I've never heard of.

The sheer amount of content is insane, like TJM said @74. I don't watch Netflix, Apple+, or any of that other stuff so I have no idea what's going on. I watch reruns of 3rd Rock from the Sun on Tubi, and sometimes Aerial America on the Smithsonian Channel. That's about it.

I thought it was pretty good. Tim Blake Nelson from Oh Brother Where Art Thou was fantastic. He plays an old farmer whose son just wants to go see the world and get into action. Nelson is trying to get his kid to accept a simple life, but the kid hates being held back. Nelson finds a wounded man on his property with a bag of cash. Bad things ensue.

The only safe villain is a white male --- which unfortunately for them is the only demographic that will watch shit action movies like this one.

Its decent actually. The writing is a bit lazy. They tend to pick a character a season to start acting like a sociopath and that supplies the drama. That's a little harsh, because its actually not that obvious until you get a good three seasons into it. Then you sort of notice that the decision making center of a certain character which was broken last season seems to be working again, but somebody else's decision making is now broken.

Only way I would be interested in a Bond movie was if they did one to the novel, in strict period. Bond movies have mutated from the beginning and decades ago mutated to "he's British, he's some sort of spy (although more like an undercover cop cause he doesn't really do any spying, he fights with criminala) and his number is 007.

IMO is was the most classically liberal piece of art I've seen recently.
He sets up a show telling you exactly how and why he's doing something so that the people who are outraged prove his exact point. And then they still end up outraged. He plays the kooky left like a fiddle. He says he agrees with many of their ends, just not the means, and they want to murder him for it.
Was I laughing out loud the whole time? Of course not. But I sincerely appreciated what he did. My sense is we'd disagree on much but agree that people who want to shut others up are bad. Bad opinions shouldn't be banned or actionable and Tweet-length tribalism has made the world exhausting.

Seasons 1 & 2 were done by SciFi; you'd be hard pressed to find better space opera. Season 3 was written by SciFi but made by amazon; meh. Season 4 written & produced by amazon; was not good. Season 5 was better, but not great

Larry Correia, Sarah Hoyt and a bunch of other writers tried to save the World Con Hugo and Campbell awards from this fate. Remember the Sad Puppies Project? They tried damn hard, but were mocked, threatened, retaliated against, and finally cancelled.
So they and a lot of others invented their own awards program at the Dragon Awards Convention. We will see who wins in a few years. I think World Con is dying as fast a the comic book industry.

The 4th film apparently follows the story events of The Matrix Online, an MMORPG that hasn't been active in over a decade. In that Morpheus died and was resurrected or something.
The Wachowskis were always big on the story spilling out of the movies into different mediums like the Animatrix and the Matrix video game that told Reloaded from Niobe's point of view.

But the entire Craig era has been about unbonding Bond. They killed M, got rid of Q for a punk kid, Bond didn't even meet Moneypenny for several movies, there's no relationship at all between them, etc. The gadgets have been played way down, the girls less emphasized, and ultimately in the end they even killed Bond's past, which nobody ever even asked for or cared about.
They have a good chance to just wrap up the entire franchise and reboot to 60's era period pieces closer to the books (look at how well Casino Royale did by being very close to the novel), but don't bet on it.

I think that's actually one series that improved over its run, at least up to the Return. The first Pink Panther was funny, but they really developed the characters over the next couple of films. I *love* A Shot In The Dark, think that might be the best of the series. Inspector Clouseau was an abomination, but when they finally returned in 1975, they still had the magic. I could watch the 70's trilogy over and over. They did jump the shark a bit on Strikes Again, but picked it up on Revenge. Sellers was a treasure.
Probably one of my all time comedy favorites is After The Fox.

I've been seeing that for about a week now. The first load of a thread looks normal but when I refresh, I lose the gray boxes. Then if I make a comment, the page loads with boxes. I figured it was just my crap, not-supported, old iPad so I didn't mention it.

I went there to see a movie, as a matter of fact. One huge problem with the place is that they did not carpet the casino. It is so loud and noisy, you can't even think straight. Very annoying.

People who will never bother to watch the movies anyway.
I heard an argument over the weekend that how hollywood sold the idea of going woke to the suits (i.e. people who pay the bills) is the performance of movies like Titanic, Avatar, etc, that had huge demographics of women wanting to see them. So, in order to try to tap into that, they make movies for what they think women want to see. But women do not want to watch that shit either, but they have now made it socially unacceptable to go back. They burned their bridge and now are standing on the other side... in Mordor.

We were invited by some friends to attend Clint Eastwood's "Cry Macho" last Sunday. It's the first movie I've seen in a theater in, like, forever.
Besides us five, there were three other people in the theater. People just don't go to the movies anymore.
