  • The Ampere Altra Max is the fastest server processor in the world - or kind of meh - depending on your workload. (AnandTech)

They've managed to cram 128 cores onto a single piece of silicon, where AMD's 64 core server CPUs are spread across 9 chiplets.

The downside of this design is that the entire chip is used for cores. AMD has room for 32MB of L2 cache and 256MB of L3 cache, where the Ampere chip has only 16MB total.

If your workload fits well in that cache, you get good performance. If not, it's going to suck.

With future chips built on a 5nm process, or with stacked memory similar to AMD's new designs, they might be able to produce a more balanced design that unleashes all those cores.

Friday at last! I'll limp through the day, relax this evening; haircut and beard trim tomorrow, maybe dinner out. My writing group meeting got canceled last night, as 2 of the members are still out of town and our leader called me to say that he was really feeling crappy (not the coof, he had it already).

Monday I'll submit my religious exemption statement, and hope for the best. Drooling Turnip's handlers keep saying vax or weekly testing, so I suppose my employer will insist on the latter. As long as they are paying for the tests, the testing is right at work, and I can walk over during work time, I guess I can put up with it for a while.

49 My education in this phenomenon began some years ago at University, where a theme in some of the classes tried to portray "Authoritarian" impulses and beliefs as exclusively "right wing", Adorno (Frankfurt School) wrote a book in the 1950s on this subject.

But it was immediately clear to me on reading all the character traits that they were describing my left wing friends and Democrats not just a little bit, but to a "T". Nothing since that time has disabused me of that observation.

Hearing that made my heart soar like a hawk!

I had to admire the students who smoked in high school for their perseverance. Smoking on campus was forbidden, so they'd steal over to the property of the convenience store next door and then huddle up and puff away outdoors, even in sub-zero temperatures and blizzard conditions. That was true dedication!

That only works if AZ owners want to sell and MN buyers want to buy.

That may be problematic until the chips start being made in enough quantities. And that may be a while.

People aren't selling unless it's to offload a vehicle as they have too many. And buyers might not be interested in an AZ type vehicle as they have a drastically different climate and a need for another vehicle. Remember things around the nation are going to cost more and be in shorter supply so folks will have less money.

Cheaper/easier to fix up a car than buy even a used one.

That is what FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) lead to. Its been known for centuries that to mobilize people behind a leader, just scare them about their future and provide a path out.

The side-effects of FUD include a strong natural impulse to put order where there is chaos, so people of weak character will cater to their impulses and become obnoxious authoritarians as their inner lizard is demanding Order (in their own terms) in a world that is perceived as Chaotic.

It doesn't help when those who are putting people in a FUD cloud are also claiming that those allegedly responsible for the chaos aren't worthy of life.

Then you get Vaxx or Die attitudes from previously normal people.

Yeah, that's partly why it's always so comical to me when I hear about horrible white racists in Minnesota, Atlanta, etc.

F*ck yourselves. Stop being absurd. Oh, I'm sure there's one or two, but as a moron pointed out, I can go years walking into rooms full of white people without hearing about race. I can't go a day in the presence of blacks.

175 I like when Old Folks tell me stories, always have. I have always tried to note their stories, understand about the people more than the events, and learn.

But try telling that to the kids these days.

Its been like that for generations. I remember we would bitch about the exact same thing by saying:
"People can be stratified as being able to talk in three types: About ideas, about people or How About Them Cowboys?"

If a person's vocabulary is so stunted that they can't process abstract ideas because there are no words to express such thoughts, then you talk about people. If you have no empathy for people, then you talk about the weather.

182 I had to admire the students who smoked in high school for their perseverance. Smoking on campus was forbidden, so they'd steal over to the property of the convenience store next door and then huddle up and puff away outdoors, even in sub-zero temperatures and blizzard conditions. That was true dedication!

When our son was in high school, they all congregated next door in the easement under the powerlines. Looked like a flock of birds in their identical army surplus pants, flannel shirts and watch caps.

Yep. We're not seeing anything new. What we are witnessing is just how special the United States was. We were abnormal as f*ck. Laws over men, equality, freedom, etc.

Normal is being restored.

189 What we are witnessing is just how special the United States was.

Exactly. I found it both disturbing and revealing that when Leftists like Obama dropped the phrase "American Exceptionalism" they did so with the understanding that the term meant that Americans were arrogant and thought that Americans considered themselves superior to all other people in every way.

It never occurs to the Left that the Exceptionalism is in the model of self-governance and liberty. Those concepts are alien to the Left - they are truly incapable of contemplating them.

205 HS smoking. I went to a private HS, HS rules did not allow students to smoke within 2 blocks of school. One of my buddies got picked up by the cops and brought to the police station for smoking. His dad had to pick him up. The PO station was across from the public HS. When his dad gets to the station there are a bunch of kids standing outside the station smoking. He complains to the cops about the kids outside, the reply from the cops was "you can't catch them all".
