General McKenzie Testifies That He Warned Biden That Afghanistan Would Quickly Fall to the Taliban Without US Troops -- Despite Biden's Constant Lies That No One Ever Predicted This

Muh Normz.

Josh Rogin

@joshrogin

Gen. McKenzie: "I recommended we keep 2,500 troops in Afghanistan." Also says he predicted withdrawing them would cause the Afghan army to collapse and the Taliban taking over. Gen. Milley agrees.

Lara Seligman

@laraseligman

Biden has denies that he received such advise. He told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos that "no one" that he "can recall" advised him to keep a force of about 2,500 troops in Afghanistan

No one he "can recall."

I guess that right there gets him off the hook for criminal perjury. His mental incapacity will be a perfect defense.

Even Politico acknowledges the obvious lie:

Top generals told lawmakers under oath on Tuesday that they advised President Joe Biden early this year to keep several thousand troops in Afghanistan -- directly contradicting the president’s comments in August that no one warned him not to withdraw troops from the country.

The remarkable testimony pits top military brass against the commander-in-chief as the Biden administration continues to face tough questions about what critics are calling a botched withdrawal that directly led to the deaths of 13 American service members, scenes of chaos at the Kabul airport, and the abandonment of American citizens and at-risk Afghans in the war-torn country.

While Politico can't quite find the partisan strength to spin for Biden on this lie, CNN says "Hold my beer."

Jim Sciutto
@jimsciutto

-->> Contradicting Trump and supporters who say he'd have done differently or better, Milley confirms he received an order in 2020 to withdraw all US forces from Afghanistan by January 2021.

Stephen L. Miller
@redsteeze

Generals just revealed Biden went against their advice on a contingency force, which led to the collapse of the Afghan government, and he lied in an interview about it, but CNN has their script and they are sticking to it.

This guy says Jim Sciutto is now limiting who can and can't read his tweets. Unless that's some kind of a glitch, Sciutto is choosing to limit his own reach to avoid skeptics reading his partisan trash.

17 Of course they knew, they wanted it to happen. There was a deal in place where the Pakistanis would convince the Taliban to hold back until the US had left, and then the US would pull all support for the Afghan government, allowing the Pakistanis and Chinese to step in and broker a "Unity government." Instead, the ISI and Taliban screwed us because they could. Meanwhile, the Afghan military collapsed because everyone with any influence was bought off and told to just walk away.

22 Perhaps I am cynical or stupid, but isn't this all beside the point? Whether or not there is concrete evidence that Biden's organization ignored warnings, the fact remains that his administration and the military, under the leadership of men like Milley, did this and chose to do so. This wasn't an accident, this was their plan. Their plan was bad and corrupt. Whether they were warned about the likely outcome isn't all that a big deal in context. If they were, they ignored it and went with their plan. If they weren't, they went with their plan anyway.

The people who did this did it regardless, and ultimately it's on the topmost leadership to make a decision. This is evidence, ultimately, that the leadership lied. Fine, and fair enough - but that's all it is. And the administration and other leadership groups lie with every breath, provably and regardless of venue. Getting caught in yet another lie is irrelevant unless action will be taken, and it will not be. It never has been.

Trump's admin gave all their info and plans to the incomding Biden admin, who refused to meet with them and discuss the. plan, and Patel says refused too even read their assessements.

It's a very typical GOPe play book to focus all fire on the political opponent of the moment rather than to note how bad the Pentagon establishment itself botched an entire 20 years of a war (the ending inclusive) since the GOPe might have to take some of the blame/responsibility for that.

114 Perhaps I am cynical or stupid, but isn't this all beside the point? Whether or not there is concrete evidence that Biden's organization ignored warnings, the fact remains that his administration and the military, under the leadership of men like Milley, did this and chose to do so. This wasn't an accident, this was their plan. Their plan was bad and corrupt. Whether they were warned about the likely outcome isn't all that a big deal in context. If they were, they ignored it and went with their plan. If they weren't, they went with their plan anyway.

Also, why would Trump or anyone in his circle want an order to depart 5 months prior to the schedule agreed upon in the deal with the Taliban? Makes no sense.

I'm confusulated.

But to deal with the underlying issue. How and where, exactly, would MacKenzie have kept/sustained 2500 troops? Doing what? Give up Bagram, THEN somehow/somewhere maintain such a force? WTF? Makes no sense from more angles than a comment has room to list.

Especially this mysterious claim by Patel that the prior administration had a plan or desire to maintain some kind of presence *after* the May 1 agreed withdrawal. Huh? What about the agreement? How many, where, doing what? Patel notes Bagram as the hub for regional counter-terror ops. OK, sure, well understood.

But was he claiming the Taliban would allow this to continue, and we would somehow maintain such a hub against their wishes and actions? Or was he assuming an Afghan army would remain in existence, and we'd be working with them somehow?

Posted by: Aetius451AD at September 28, 2021 11:54 AM (csEWM)

261 Two very probable things, if Trump had not been removed:

1) the US withdrawal would have been far better executed, including making Bagram the last bastion held, and last point of departure

2) the Afghan army/state would have crumbled, and the situation today (minus that of Americans/foreigners/local partners, of course) would have been essentially the same

So it's really all about the specifics of the disengagement, not the macro political/geopolitical outcome, which is obviously driven by fundamentals (and always has been, a much bigger and different topic).

307 Stupid question. Why are we relying on testimony under oath of a recommendation from the US military leadership?

For recommendations such as these, there are usually studies done and documents prepared to explain the recommendation and why it's needed.

Instead of verbal testimony, why is no one demanding to see the physical document of the recommendation from military leadership?

This garbage is nothing but he said-he said bullshit drama. And, in the end, the Biden Administration can just throw the military leadership under the bus if they want, stating like they did in A Knight's Tale "This is my word and it is beyond contestation!"

But leaving any kind of operational force I find ridiculously implausible/unsustainable, for reasons that should be obvious.

As for "logistical success" - if one looks ONLY at the volume of people flown out on a no-notice improvised basis from HKIA, sure, it was what one expects from the US military. An operation no other organization on earth even dreams of being able to do.

But the failure to do the obvious thing (keep Bagram), and to deal with certain military assets left behind, are outrageous disasters, on their face. Perhaps something could make them look less so, but I'm doubtful.

356 @261"Two very probable things, if Trump had not been removed:
1) the US withdrawal would have been far better executed...
2) the Afghan army/state would have crumbled, and the situation today (minus that of Americans/foreigners/local partners, of course) would have been essentially the same
So it's really all about the specifics of the disengagement, not the macro political/geopolitical outcome, which is obviously driven by fundamentals (and always has been, a much bigger and different topic)."

Not really IMO. The perception of our competence and and sound judgment are integral to our strategic deterrence. Throw in that President Sleepytime then showed an incredible lack of will by not correcting the situation to insure a forceful removal of Americans and our local network, and instead pretty-pleasing the Taliban. So the chances of the Chicoms testing our resolve leading to a hot war have greatly increased, including possible use of nukes.

And in the unforced error, he airlifts us another 100,000 Third Worlders who will be 300,000 once the chain migration does it's thing.

as for requiring a sizeable force for bagram- i don't think 5000 troops were needed for that.

400 Milley and McKenzie didn't resign even though they knew that the Afghan withdrawal would be a strategic catastrophe. But they will gladly shiv Biden in public, after the fact. Both actions, in my estimation, weaken the US: at the very least, if they're going to implement deeply flawed orders, they should have the nads to argue in defense of them. Instead, they show that they're completely untrustworthy. The are the sort of condottiere whom Machiavelli would have had executed. Instead, we will reward them with multi-million-dollar book deals and TV gigs. Whatta country!

As I noted above, the Strategic catastrophe is all on the Whitehouse, no matter who is in it...

The Tactical portion was the debacle. Basic Strategy to pull out would be pull civilians out first. Keep more than one avenue of retreat open (ie keep BOTH Airfields). Destroy equipment you can't get out, in place.

Once civilians are out, THEN you contract your area of operations slowly, to the two airfields... pulling your men out in an orderly manner.

They had YEARS to plan this, as Trump ordered the withdrawal in his FIRST YEAR IN OFFICE, but his STAFF constantly countermanded the order.

480 Which means that the entire uniparty knows what Milley did and essentially approves it except for a few token "hearings".
Revolting but true

Yes, McConnell is perfectly fine with it. He would have got his cut.

481 Joe's response to Stephanmetropilis:

WTF was he going to say? Yeah, they told me it'd collapse, but fuck Milley.

He just didn't lie like the Clinton's and leave himself wine roo. Plus, he's from a state with a population less than some college enrollments. He's always lied. Nobody ever brought it up in Delaware. So he's not only a liar. But a lazy one not giving himself an out. Or "nuanced "

482 So either the Generals are lying or Biden is lying. Pick one but someone needs to be fired for this.

I think this is the prelude to exactly that.
Joe is wrecking Dem prospects for 2022 and so the puppet masters are slapping the ice cream out of his hands.

Some mention how the timing of the LTC going to the brig seems odd? Well, watch for this testimony gets used in the Courtmartial.
You can sweep a lot of crap under a rug, except holes.
This is a massive hole in credibility where one cannot be tolerated. Especially when the same baffoon is ordering the same troops whose trust he depends on, to take a vax they don't want.

It's the spelling in Queen's English, but the authoress is from Philly and so has no excuse.

In Britain, advice is always a noun, advise always a verb, just as it is here.

486 Let me remind you that we have met and prevailed over issues every bit as serious as the current one, throughout our history.

What we do now is our part in that mission those who preceded us did to ensure the Republic endures.

You might say that it is our heritage.

487 " Also says he predicted withdrawing them would cause the Afghan army to collapse and the Taliban taking over. Gen. Milley agrees."

So they both confess that the US military has been lying to the President, the Congress, and the American people for the last 20 years that the Afghan army was capable and competent to at least hold its own. They confess that, given 20 years, they cannot train or motivate an army to even defend itself. Incredible.

488 They are all lying

Posted by: Gonzotx at September 28, 2021 02:10 PM (5SuyB)

489 Oh, so Biden had been told that leaving 2,500 troops was imperative. Good for you, Milley & McKenzie and the rest of the senior staff for telling him that.

Now tell us why you jumped up with a hearty "yes sir!" when he gave the order, but you stonewalled Trump for two years when Trump gave you the order? Your mealy-mouthed bunch of CYA is just cowardly, fraudulent blame-shifting, now that it's all gone to snot. Don't give me that oh-so-holy carp: I'm not in the mood.

490 Don't dismiss out of hand the possibility that Biden is telling the truth and the generals are lying. Granted, I'd love to see Biden drawn and quartered (figuratively speaking) over the Afghan fuck-up; but I don't trust anyone from this den of vipers.

492 Our military leaders have been cowards since the Vietnam war. They have become progressively more spineless, chinless, and chestless till they have reached the stage where they are now brainless. Do they believe anyone will buy their song and dance? That they are the worst kind of whores and traitors and the public will not recognize them as the lapdogs of the johns od the swamp?
