The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

J.J. Sefton has, over the last two days expounded on something that has been percolating in my consciousness for a few months. Today he eviscerated (but gently!) Karol Markowicz for the admittedly pie-in-the-sky idea that we can't have a national divorce, but We Can Work It Out! Apologies to The Beatles...No We Can't!

Whether we have a violent separation into two radically different countries, or the freedom-loving portion of America is subsumed into the socialist miasma that we all know is coming remains to be seen. The question is: are there different paths to a better America besides the bloody ones? Sure, I can conjure up a rosy road full of conservative unicorns and unfettered 2nd Amendment rights and true free speech and a comprehensive diminution of the regulatory state, but I prefer not to be laughed at this early in the morning.

What I have been thinking about is what comes after? And the only template we have is the American Civil War. Yes, these things have happened in other parts of the world, most recently in Yugoslavia, where it was unimaginably bloody and cruel and destructive, culminating in the creation of six different countries and another couple "autonomous" zones.

[Please don your rose-colored glasses]
The template closest to our national psyche is different than the vicious religious and cultural divisions of Yugoslavia, and it is there where there is a faint glimmer of hope. Not for reconciliation ante bellum, but for a post-schism accommodation. Our civil war was also brutal and bloody and cruel, yet with time and admittedly some fits and starts we were able to create a country unified in its goals and aspirations, without the festering hatreds of central Europe or Rwanda or Peru or any of dozens of countries whose internal strife rivaled the worst of human history.

That is broken. Who will come out on top is anyone's guess, and for every pathway to sanity, I see several that end in dystopian nightmares. And at the end it is entirely possible that the American Exceptionalism of our first 200+ years of history will have been drowned in a sea of compliant and passive drones from Central America and the Far East.

Who knows....

8 I dunno. I suspect Yugoslavia might be the closest contemporary match. We'll see, but I think geography is going to play a role. A "national divorce" isn't going to result in two countries like last time. There will be probably 5-6, and the shifting alliances and border conflict and the dispersed population (reds in blue areas, blues in red arias) is going to result in spotty and consistent violence. Multi-dimensional fracturing and lots of violence is the likely outcome, I think.

28 Georgia Opens Probe Into Drop Box Ballots, Chain Of Custody In Huge Democrat County

Georgia's Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has opened an investigation into the handling of dropboxes in the 2020 election in one of the state's Democratic strongholds.
The investigation comes after a scathing report that there were problems with the chain of custody documentation in DeKalb County, Just The News reported.
DeKalb County, which is just outside the Atlanta metro area, is one of the largest Democrat strongholds in the state.

30 I don't anticipate a actual war even happening. The American Cold Civil War has been going on for a few decades now, with zero engagement by the American Right. American Left's long march through the institutions culminated in the rigged and stolen election of NOV 2020. Prior to that, the American Left had already taken over control of every institution in the nation: all levels of education, all institutions of information dissemination, all institutions of "health", all sports leagues, all "entertainment" industry, all businesses and all corporations. The final piece to complete their puzzle of totalitarian control was the White House.

And that was after decades of George Soros investing in elections of local District Attorneys and Attorneys General in cities and states across the country. And after decades of the Left taking over every intelligence community agency and federal law enforcement - including US military and national guard - in the nation.

The American Left is now using their control of American institutions to punish American citizens. Mask-up or get the shot in order to get an education, travel or have employment.

40 Let's look at Texas as a model.

San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, and Houston will have to be walled off with strict, limited, emigration allwed from those areas in order to have a same Texas.

So now you have 4 city-states, surronded by the Nation of Texas, with no real access to food, water, fuel or electricity.

No way that ends peacefully. And that will be repeated in every state in the former union.

41 Don't forget the division of Czechoslovakia into Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Very quiet, very civilized. Unfortunately, though, a similar split of the U.S. would leave us looking like Israel and the Palestinians -- a prosperous, law abiding chunk caught between two poverty-stricken, lawless strips of land bent on destroying the center. Plus, again like Israelis, there would be blue lumps like Chicago trying to suck up the resources.

47 Based on the number of US citizens who believe that Jan 6th was an insurrection, including my usually level headed hubby, no one will fight for their rights or to preserve the republic.
Both hubby and I are in ++29 category and have moved to a very conservative state. I believe we have personally achieved the best we will see before we shuffle off this mortal coil.
I feel sorry for family members that are younger but honestly they are all out and out proud progressives or very soft repubs. That includes my steps and step-grandkids. My pity meter is pegging at zero for them and those like them.
Sounds harsh, not sorry about it. People in this country no longer have the desire to fight for their freedoms. Most don't even care about voting the assholes out who brought us to this state.

I was working for T-Mobile when they did something similar with their flex plans, suddenly moving them all to contracted plans that paid after service instead of before.

So many people suddenly couldn't keep up with their bills. It was weird.

I'm sure nothing like that will happen to Wal-Mart's customers.

The Left has taken decades to take over the commanding heights of our society, and they aren't going to give it up any time soon.

The successful lesson that the left learned from Marxism as applied historically is that it's not going to be executed from the working classes rising up against the top - that is doomed to failure. Much better to take over the administrative state, entertainment, nonprofit foundations and education, and use that instrumentality to effect change instead. If we're looking to take that over using the grassroots, it's not going to happen.

If an EMP can thoroughly disrupt our modern society by frying our electronic infrastructure, the leftist at the commanding heights can do the same thing to the heartland by shutting off our information access. We're so addicted to information that we'll go running back to them at the first sign of withdrawal symptoms.

83 The problem is, once the first shot is fired, everything goes to hell very quickly. The confluence of events that led to our own revolution is... well, unique in human history. You have the likelihood of strongmen governments on both sides of the issue. Once strongmen are in place, it is very hard to get them to give up ultimate power once they have it.
Another massive (perhaps the biggest) problem: Logistics. Any conflict in the US is going to break supply chain networks- and that is a mess of massive and global implication. One of the biggest things to take away from Roman history was, after a certain point, the consequence of making sure Rome stayed fed became paramount to everyone. Rome had a population in antiquity of over a million people. Everyone knew that if the people of Rome did not stay fed, then things would go to hell there VERY quickly. By the 2020 census, we currently have 10 Romes.
Another problem is self sufficiency. In the revolution, we were already our own self contained and sufficient entity. Even though the South in the Civil War had a LOT of the farmland, they still had massive issues with being able to feed everyone (even in the lower population south.)

One very important thing to consider here is not how communism affects the people collectively of a society, but how it impacts the elites that get to administer it.

Sure communism has failed, every time, to raise living standards and insure human rights. But in most cases it has improved the relative position of those in its leadership. So for those elites it as worked very, very well.

103 So how exactly could there even be a "national divorce"? I'll just use a small example.

Let's say nationally-divorced (ND)-Michigan sets policy as mandatory mask-wearing and mandatory "vaccinations" for SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 indefinitely and implement "vaccine" passports.

So Michiganders who want no part of that, move to another state without those policies. But what about sports, both collegiate and professional? Any athlete playing in the state of ND-Michigan needs to be "vaccinated". Which means that any athlete coming to play in ND-Michigan from a state that does not require "vaccination" now either must get a "vaccination" or not play.

That is just a small example applied to sports. But this applies to every single thing in the nation. Anyone from non-"vaccination" states would be prohibited from doing anything in "vaccination" passport states.

then use those state majorities to start peeling off bits of blue states, western VA, inland CA, OR and WA, make the red states larger, isolate the giant cities and let them rot.

if you are in a dead end blue state and are a conservative, you have to move. now. if you don't, then sorry, you are part of the problem. all those fed up NYers who moved to FL have made FL a more powerful state electorally than NY. it can certainly be done to CA.

129 Stollsteimer said this all began with a shooting about a block away from the football stadium on the 900 block of Coates Street.

At the same time of the shooting, authorities say a vehicle turned onto Coates Street directly in front of three Sharon Hill Borough police officers.

"We have concluded that the gunfire, combined with the movement of the vehicle, precipitated responsive gunfire from the Sharon Hill police officers," said Stollsteimer on Monday.

According to Stollsteimer, it's believed that four of the five gunshot victims, including 8-year-old Fanta Bility, were struck by shots fired by the Sharon Hill police officers. Final forensic reports have not been released.

Sources have told Action News that no weapon was found after a search of the vehicle and its occupants. Shockingly, no one was hit in the car.

Multiple .45 caliber and .9-millimeter shell casings were recovered near the initial shooting scene on Coates Street, Stollsteimer said.

155 the best approach now is to turn your red state into a fortress, elect psychotically conservative people who want commies dead as much as you can, accept no rinos , squishes or open primaries.

One thing the left learned was to run people that could claim to be moderate-ish in Red States. Whether it was true or not did not matter since we are talking about elections.

And for years I'd argue with people in red states that would vote for "moderate" Dems. Because they'd say the moderate Dem was closer to their politics. And I'd point out this isn't how it worked. If you are voting in a red State you need a "far right" Republican to balance the far left Dem being elected in another Blue State just to get to "moderate" from congress as a whole. And often I'd just get the argument restated again that the "moderate" Dem is closer to this idiot voter.

159 I see this more as a split coming by ways of states just deciding to "opt out," much the same way as with the Civil War, however without clear declarations of secession. We already see this with blue and red states essentially setting up and executing their own legislation directly opposed to the Feds depending on who is in power. Once these legal battles are exhausted, and the yolk of one ideology is thrown upon those who will not tolerate it, you will have a basic breakdown where these rulings will be ignored, and at that point it may go kinetic. There may be enclaves of blue and red in otherwise dominant states, but these people will quickly move away or be swept out, perhaps by violence. Depending then on how strong the Feds are, there may be actions taken against states, but I will go back to the Civil War and determine that most in the Armed forces will go back to their states and families and proceed with violent/defensive actions accordingly. It may be sparse to begin with, but the dissolution of the union by sheer will of non-compliance with dictates will lead the way, and new unions with like states will be forged.

You don't get it now with layaway. You make your payment until you hit the total price and only then do you get it. It is delayed. It is a complicated way to save for something, but layaway is much more a specific form of goal-oriented saving than it is a financing scheme.

People of the Northern persuasion still view Southerners as backwards, low-intellect, non-shoe wearing, possum-eating, cousin-humping inbreds the drink moonshine and shit in a hole in a wooden shed.

As recently as the 1980's Southerners were depicted as Hillbillies on television eating vittles, blowing on a brown jug and riding in a rocking chair on the back of a pickup truck or running from the law in their Confederate flag sports sedan shooting arrows tipped with dynamite.

168 "Who knows..."

No one does, really. Uncharted territory.

We do know that the Left is ruthless and uncompromising in their quest for absolute power, and that Republican politicians -- the putative "opposition" party -- are largely weak, clueless, deluded or beholden to the oligarchy.

Therefore we can assume that only a subset of conservatives (leaderless so far) are as determined to defend freedom as the entirety of the Left is to take it away.

The Left seems to be racing toward a state of control such that opposition is prohibitively risky to that critical mass of citizens -- the rebels -- who could make a difference.

I just cannot envision how we avoid violence. At the same time, I do not see how the violence can be decisive.

My sense is that some catastrophe resulting from the catastrophic incompetence of the Left will scramble all predictions.

Yep. There have been a few studies along these lines. They tell people you have 2 options. Option 1 is you get $10, and the guy next to you gets $20. Or you both get $5. And the majority of people take the $5 option. Even though they get 1/2 as much money they don't want someone else getting more. It's insane, but it's how people are wired.

And that's why being a "middle class" communist party leader among a population of serfs is a better option than being middle class in a capitalist system where Bill Gates and Elon also exist.

213 The more realistic scenario is not splitting up peaceably, nor fighting a civil war, but defeating the leftists.

You do that the way we defeated the Soviets, by showing them, through a display of force, that if they try to consolidate power, there will be nothing for them to rule over. Everything they love will burn. I don't know exactly what that looks like, but at least part of it includes Sefton's observation that patriots must take power over local rule.

The Soviets wanted Europe. They needed a tactical advantage in ballistic nukes to support the invasion by conventional means. Reagan denied them that advantage. When they realized they couldn't have Europe without an unwinnable fight, they gave up and elected Gorbachev.

I couldn't really comprehend his vision of balkanization he used in the setting, but have started to gain that comprehension since 2001. It accelerates yearly.
My big question, if (when) this would happen, would the Urbans be quick enough to secure the food, energy & goods production? Would they be able to secure enough (wo)manpower to force the Rurals to hand over their food, etc?
I for one would love to see the city implode. If you can't feed them or distract them (fb, twit, et.al.) the cities will burn and everything will resemble Soylent Green and movies of that sort from the late 60s & early 70s.

I truly believe we are at the end of a long run and a reset is coming, whether we want it to or not.

I think maybe we're understanding "lay away" differently. As I understand it, it's not "get it today, pay over time" it's "pay over time, get it when it's paid for." The former always includes interest even if it's hidden in the price. It has to to cover the risk of nonpayment. The latter is no different from putting cash in a jar every month except that by committing to another party, you've made it harder to take it back out.

No. The problem is making payments for something that is not the product. Loans, Credit, etc.

LayAway does not penalize you for scheduling payments. It does nothing but secure an item and allow a timeframe to make payments towards the purchase price.

If anything, it lends to responsibility, not poverty.

Shit. I put 5k guitars on layaway when I was 15-16, with $50 and then went out and got new jobs/shifts to increase my income to cover the additional expense.

You will never convince me that there is a negative aspect to a typical layaway scenario. Can't tell you how many old collectibles I have owned that came with the layaway booklet/stubs from the original purchaser.

You can't occupy a country-side. Energy production is a lot easier to secure. When large economies break down(as a disruption in internal trade will cause), cities depopulate. The Roman Empire experienced this.

This is why dark ages going into the middle ages most of Europe had many very local manorial lords rather than highly concentrated urban power bases (Byzantine Empire with their intact Constantinople and relatively stable territory being a noteworthy exception).

The Left is doing everything possible to make it happen and the GOP is sleepwalking through the whole process, as usual, just to be amenable.
It will start when the USD is no longer the Reserve Currency.
At that point we won't be able to pay back debts, which will be something like 300% of GDP. Civil servants, the military, the government will not get paid. Or they will be paid with worthless dollars.

281 What we understand as "leftism" in America is really just immature barbarism. It is not an ideology or a team so much as it's the worst qualities of uncivilized man made manifest.

You can't excise that from the people, because it is inherent to humanity. It can only be countered by civilization, by civic virtue, by religion. Humanity has spent millennia figuring this out. You aren't going to split the country in half down the middle and magically cure human nature.

In this scenario about 9 to 10 hours after the slide the US coastline could see a 10m to 30m tsunami hit.

Severity could be more or could be less depending upon how much of the island slides off and which side the event happens.

286 I'm actually wondering how the inevitable coming space colonies will impact governance on Earth. It may not be twenty years before we have a thousand or more people living in space in a given facility. Will these outposts be ruled by the UN? by individual nation states? By corporations? If the UN is given the chance, they will establish a model for one world government and they will never stop pushing to assume control over the whole shootin' match.

Can we keep the history of Enlightenment Republics alive long enough for them to influence 2050 and beyond? The American Republic is a shambling zombie, but given the chance, the Left will rewrite or flat out erase history so that the generations to come believe that the Socialist model is the most desirable.

I'm not sure our job is to save our country or even ourselves. The bureaucracy that actually is our government is more cancer than healthy tissue at this point. In a weird way, we have to preserve the past realizing we may have no future, so our great grandkids can start from the Enlightenment and not the Dark Ages.

287 Let's look at Texas as a model.

Posted by: tbodie at September 28, 2021 10:11 AM (IkffI)

The solution might be to borrow a page from the middle ages and renaissance - City Charters and/or Free Cities. Beyond a certain size, you get spun off into your own special district that may behave like a territory or be granted independence, as the state government sees fit.

299 my son and i have been watching a series on amazon called ww2 in hd.
it is excellent. and all the talk i see on here and out in the twatterverse about another civil war or some kind of "divorce" does two things to me:
1. angers me.
2. saddens me.
all those young men who died giving their lives for us today. if we let the soy mafia win, what was it for?
what were any of the wars fought over the years for?
and i don't mean afghanistan or iraq, as i understand perfectly well those were meaningless.
my overarching point is that this country is worth saving and fighting for. and if you all think for one minute there will be a peaceful divorce or we'll carve ourselves up into semi states, think again.
foreign adversaries will not stand by and let that happen and neither will the libs.
this is for all of the marbles, people. so we make our stand here and now. as reagan said, there is no where else to go.
i've given my adult life to the service of our great country. there are millions of americans out there who want to keep the dream alive. you aren't alone.
i can guarantee you most of this civil war talk is straight up psyops against us. don't fall for it.

There are no Red states and Blue states. There are Red and Blue areas and neighborhoods and cities. That's it. Check out Texas. Austin is one of the most left-wing cities in the nation. The Left has been working to flip Texas Blue for years. And they are making inroads. Last 6 Presidential elections % for Republican candidate: 59%, 61%, 55%, 57%, 52%, 52%. Think it can't happen, just look at Illinois. Illinois was a Red state for 2 decades from '68 to '88. Now everyone knows it as a Blue shithole.

You think Florida is safely a Red state? Florida has been flipping back and forth for decades. '80-'92 R, '96 D, '00-'04 R, '08-'12 D, '16-'20 R. True that they have voted for a R Governor since 1998. But R does not mean much anymore. Does DeSantis represent the GOP? No. He's more Trumpian than he is Republican. What happens when he is gone and a GOPe candidate replaces him?

I'm no Sherman, but I do know the Left, fearful of losing its tenuous hold on power, can only make it worse for us as we approach the midterms and the presidential election after that. Inspector's sister is trying to get out of California. Inspector is encouraging her to come to Texas, but I'm afraid she'll put it off too long.

I would also add to the more broad discussion, that visibility into the future is a funny thing. In 1979, nobody was betting on the end of the cold war ten years later. One thing we have in our favor is that our opponents ideology really is bankrupt.

The other thing in our favor is an old Tolkien observation: Oft evil will doth evil mar.

The forces of evil are not unified, and are prone to vicious backstabbing, especially once it becomes time to decide who gets to sit in the big chair. They are often their own worst enemies.

Want a recent example? Chinese state media, presumably with Xi's blessing, just called George Soros "the son of the devil", a global economic terrorist, and "our number one-enemy". Get some popcorn.

this is another reason why this idea of a civil war 2 is preposterous.
who are the belligerents? the reason there was a confederacy was because an entire state seceded and took those who agreed with it.
what issue will states secede on? what legislature has the balls to do that? i'd wager not even texas does.
so as someone pointed out, the only logical belligerents are particular areas.
fine. chicago, solidly blue, wages war on...the rest of red illinois? no.
and what is the triggering mechanism for this event that is uncoordinated and unorganized event?
if there is one, we haven't seen it yet.
so americans are either completely apathetic to any of these stimuli or the event that will get a call to action has not occurred....yet.
the former cannot be true as evidenced by red states and blogs like this. therefore...the event hasn't happened yet.

422 There are no Red states and Blue states.

IL is a poor example, they've been fixing elections for 30 years and in that time have redistricted in ways that entrench one party rule. I actually believe Trump won IL.

another accurate statement. what i have come to learn living in a blue state that is controlled by a single population area (that would be seattle) is that those districts on the west side of the state are lost.
but...they are lost as long as no conservatives get into the fray at the local level.
politics is local. you start making small changes there, you can start moving up the food chain in terms of elected officials. it can happen, it works. it just takes time and people willing to step up.
and that, frankly, as conservatives is our achillies heel. our time is used by working and raising familes etc. and we know that politics is dirty and efforts will be sabotaged.
so we must come to terms with those and be willing to push forward. or we slide into a tech-tyranny.

Ignore the gun control premise and go directly to underlying sources: the Constitution and philosophy. Gun control is not a practical matter, it's a philosophical and moral matter related to natural rights. These are enshrined in our Constitution - the proximal primary source - and informed by bedrock philosophy. Don't make a practical argument, make a moral argument and then you don't have to use a single source written after about 1800.

Start by rubbishing the AR-15 grabs. Use FBI numbers to show that more people die by fists and feet than all types of rifles.

Official numbers that don't serve the narrative (such as differences in crime in shall issue vs. may issue states) will also help.

3. your local pd and interview the chief and other officers for insight on their stats, reporting mechanisms, and professional observations.

488 Everyone knows that Nancy Pelosi and her husband have made some "conveniently" timed purchases of stocks like Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla. At the least, the Pelosi family are far more active traders than the average U.S. household. At worst, it appears the family could be using the Speaker's access to non-public information to benefit personally.

Regardless of what the objective truth is, traders have seen enough to leave them convinced that Pelosi "has an in" when it comes to investing and, in turn, have dedicated their stock picking "due diligence" to examining what stocks the Pelosi household is buying at the time.

"Shouts out to Nancy Pelosi, the stock market's biggest whale," one user on Tik Tok said, according to a report by NPR.

507 Delayed gratification is one of the most important keys to being successful in life. Lay-away is the complete opposite of that. And that's why I say it is a destroyer of wealth/success. Whether or not interest is paid is irrelevant. It feeds into a never ending cycle of "want it now, get it now" that is corrosive for people.

Urban crime. The cities with the most restrictive gun control have the worst gun violence rates. Chicago, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Houston alone will prove the point. Compare to less-restrictive urban areas, and rural areas. What will emerge is no trend - there is no correlation between gun violence and gun law, and it is therefore an unacceptable limitation on natural rights in the absence of any probable benefit.

And this is why every institution where this is in place - vows of obedience to authority - is easy to take over and undermine. Because you don't have to infiltrate the masses, you just need to hold the positions of authority.

And that is exactly what the Left has done for every institution in the country. Specifically to this conversation, they have done this in the US military. They did not need to fill the military ranks with communists and Marxists, they just needed to fill the authority positions with communists and Marxists and everyone else is obligated to fall in line.

Any system where you are not allowed to question authority is doomed to fail.

In the case of the RCC, over the centuries, reformers have arisen through the ranks, guided by the Holy Spirit. St. Francis of Assisi is one famous example.

Usually what happens is their first few attempts at reform get knocked down by authority, and then miraculously, by the work of the Holy Spirit, the reformer's plan of action is followed.
