  • Xata is a serverless database for serverless apps. (Xata.io)

Serverless is one more step of wishful thinking beyond cloud. There's no serverless, there's just someone else's servers and you have no control over what happens on them.

  • People said I was mad to embed SMB in the kernel, but I embedded it all the same. It sank into the swamp. (Phoronix)

It has - surprising no-one - a security vulnerability. Involving .. which is the first thing you check when handling a file path on Unix-like systems.

And the patch to fix that has a buffer overflow bug.

  • You can no longer run Windows 11 in VirtualBox. (Bleeping Computer)

Funny thing, I was checking my desktop system for that AMD chipset driver bug yesterday, and I noticed that it has TPM 2.0, the critical requirement for running Windows 11.

I still can't run Windows 11 because it doesn't support my CPU either.

  • The Surface Pro 8 may or may not have leaked. (Thurrott.com)

It will be announced in two days so the chance of accurate leaks right now is high, but there's limited information of dubious provenance, so taking this with a bucket of salt for now.

2 Well, that's interesting. I got a first in 2 consecutive threads!

In other news, mornin', all,

Chekov the older cat is still here. After I posted last night he came out three separate times to eat wet food in the kitchen, and sprawled out on the carpet so I could pet him and tell him what a slacker he is. This morning I see he has cleaned up all the wet food on the plate and used the litter box. I guess we can still have hope.

To Anna Puma, Re: Last night's thread - I had heard about the Eureka Seven movie series when it first came out, but i think i was so put off by the ending of the tv series, with Holland just being an abusive dad and Eureka turning into an antiwar leftist, that I figured i wouldn't bother. The movie's apparently are 1 or 2 about before the series, and a retelling of the series, so maybe one day i will get to watching them.

70 Some accidental clarity regarding that idiotic story about gunshot victims being turned away from hospitals in rural Ohio because the ICU beds were full of ivermectin overdosers: In the past six weeks in Oregon, the number of such patients admitted to the ICU is... Two. (OHSU)

Which isn't a lot, but it's odd that it happened twice.

*

I bet it's COVID rules. Something else happened that required hospitalization, but the individuals had Ivermectin in their system so they could be counted as "hospitalized with Ivermectin".

It's weird how they use a different technique for post-vaxxine problems and deaths.

I'm guessing if it's really Ivermectin-related it was an "ivermectin plus" product with a poison added for additional livestock pest control.

80 It's funny how none of this would be a problem if the government would just make Ivermectin easy to get (even OTC ideally) since it's safer than arguably any other prescribed medication in the world and billions of human doses have been taken over the last few decades.

But that would jeopardize the emergency use authorization granted by the FDA. That's not a joke. It's literally in black and white on their website. No other treatment can be available.

85 That dead hiker woman - there's a boatload of issues surrounding that entire episode - with both of them.

And now, one of them is dead. That's a tragedy no matter how crazy she was. Could her demise be self-inflicted? Dunno but it bares looking into.

90 Speaking of, I might not be around later so this needs to be posted in every thread (especially JJs). Here's the current peer reviewed research the pro-virus people keep demanding:

American Journal of Therapeutics

"Moderate-certainty evidence finds that large reductions in COVID-19 deaths are possible using ivermectin. Using ivermectin early in the clinical course may reduce numbers progressing to severe disease. The apparent safety and low cost suggest that ivermectin is likely to have a significant impact on the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic globally."

107 From the Ivermectin article:

"Some cases involved individuals obtaining a prescription for either human or veterinary forms of the drug."

I wish they'd tell us which was which.

Also, the context puts those "some cases" among the "25 cases involving Oregonians intentionally misusing ivermectin to treat or prevent COVID-19 between Aug. 1 and Sept. 14," not all of whom were hospitalized (N = 5) and not all of whom were admitted to ICU (N = 2).

109 I assume we had this already in the links; I didn't get to read them yet, but anyway, since today is Canada's national election, I am praying that Trudeau be voted out and the conservative candidate be elected. It would send a message to the other autocratic globalists. If other people feel the same way, I encourage them to pray as well.

112 "Winter is coming..."

Alas, it is. Yesterday was a gorgeous day here in Kenosha, in SE Wisconsin: bright sunshine, and a lovely SE breeze off Lake Michigan. My wife and I went to the beach, for what is probably the last time this year, to catch a few rays and splash a bit in the waves. The water was noticeably colder than on our last beach outing, but still tolerable. Today, gray skies, cooler temperatures, and drizzle. And so it goes ...
