Reason and Science or Alchemy?

Business Alchemy

This week, J.J. Sefton highlighted a couple of really insightful pieces concerning the thinking of our Ruling Class. They may help explain the preparations in D.C. today for the long-feared September 18 protest.

I was also asked on social media to participate in a couple of surveys which reflect the preoccupations of the media, academia and the ruling class. These topics seem to me to reflect a certain separation from reason.

First, Victor Davis Hanson, on Abandoning Science for Alchemy. You may recall J.J.'s quote:

Science is dying; superstition disguised as morality is returning. And we all will soon become poorer, angrier and more divided.

The premise of the piece is:

The scientific method used to govern much of popular American thinking.

In empirical fashion scientists advised us to examine evidence and data, and then by induction come to rational hypotheses. The enemies of "science" were politics, superstition, bias, and deduction.

Yet we are now returning to our version of medieval alchemy and astrology in rejecting a millennium of the scientific method.

A survey I took this week seems to reflect the idea that "science" really has little to do with the "scientific method". It gave me the idea that science should be treated like a religion. Kinda went along with the piece by VDH, as I think whoever put the survey together would think that I was "anti-science" for rejecting unscientific statements made in the name of science.

Here are a couple of examples from VDH of irrationality from "our betters":

Take the superstitions that now surround COVID-19.

We now know from data that a prior case of COVID offers immunity as robust as vaccination--if not better.

Why then are Joe Biden's various proposed vaccination mandates ignoring that scientific fact? Dr. Anthony Fauci, when asked, seemed at a loss for words.

Is this yet another of the scientific community's Platonic "noble lies," as when last year Fauci assured the public there was no need for masks? He later claimed he had lied so that medical professionals would not run out of needed supplies.

Fauci also seemed to throw out all sorts of mythical percentages needed for herd immunity, apparently in an attempt to convince the public that it will never be safe until every American is protected from COVID by vaccination only.

Why did both candidate Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris warn the American people on the eve of the vaccination rollouts that a Trump Administration inoculation could be unsafe--thereby at the very outset undermining confidence in mass vaccinations?

Why was the medical community largely silent about such dangerous sabotaging of a new vaccination, but months later became vociferous in warning the public that any prior doubts about the safety of these Operation Warp Speed vaccinations were scientifically misplaced? Was there a medical breakthrough on January 20, 2020 to alter their consensus?

J. J. also picked up a piece from City Journal, "Crashing Out".

In Afghanistan, the United States succeeded only in creating a virtual fantasyland.

Worth reading. Especially concerning this kind of hubris:

In the summer of 2002, Karl Rove arranged a meeting with journalist Ron Suskind to tell him that reality was a thing of the past. Rove was the most senior and best-known advisor to President George W. Bush, the mastermind behind his election almost two years earlier. The meeting with Suskind happened as the Iraq War was looming. Public debate about invading Iraq revolved around forensic evidence and intelligence reports, taken more or less seriously by the members of what Rove called the "reality-based community"--people emotionally attached to reality the way their ancestors were attached to God.

Suskind did not disagree. He liked to believe that solutions emerge from the "study of discernible reality," but when he started to mumble something about the values of the Enlightenment and the ideal of empiricism, Rove cut him off. "Not the way the world really works anymore. We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you are studying that reality . . . we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort themselves out."

In both Iraq and Afghanistan, the point of the enterprise was to act decisively against an old foe and bring him down. What might happen afterward was not really considered.

And then, when "nation building" started, "new realities" really got confusing. But we never learned about the extent of the confusion. We were led to believe that our side was successful in controlling the "new realities".

September 18 Protest, "Extremist Groups", Surveys

Well, it looks like the National Guard probably won't get called out for the scary September 18 Protest highlighting the treatment of January 6 defendants. Not surprising. There are other events scheduled in D.C. today, too. The dcist has some interesting details. Counter-protests may be larger than the actual protest. But authorities need a wall around the Capitol.

MSN.com explains that:

Last month, DHS identified a "heightened threat environment" in its latest NTAS bulletin, warning of extremists "seek[ing] to exploit the emergence of COVID-19 variants by viewing the potential re-establishment of public health restrictions across the United States as a rationale to conduct attacks."

Oh. So this protest is not about January 6 defendants? It is about opposition to the re-establishment of public health restrictions? Have the actual protesters said this?

Another possibility:

When you think of J6, you picture the Q Anon shaman or even the outside scene - a minor riot.

When the regime thinks of J6, they see that picture (99% of you never saw) of the most powerful people in the world crawling around in terror of maga mee-maws.

Wizard of Oz moment.

I only saw *that* image once. Then it's like it vanished. It all came together. These people who vote to send people to war stuffed their faces into dirty carpet. They were totally humiliated and they wanted revenge.

Survey from an actual hate group, the SPLC

I did not fill out this survey, which seemed like a fundraising scheme, but I thought the wording was interesting:

You've been selected to participate in a vital SPLC research project.
We urgently want to hear your views on the growing threat of violent white
nationalism and hateful extremists in your community. Please complete our Fighting Hate in America research assessment before 11:59 p.m. tonight.

Take our fighting hate in America survey

We urgently want to hear your views on the growing threat of violent white nationalism and hateful extremists in your community. Your answers will be kept confidential and will give the SPLC a better understanding of how to overcome the hate, racism, white supremacy, and intolerance that is poisoning our country.

This is their in-depth survey. They want to know my views:

THE SURVEY

Have you ever observed hate group activity in your community?

Question - Not required - Do you think social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., are doing enough to monitor and police hate groups and extremists?

Question - Not Required - Do you think local law enforcement should do more to monitor and investigate hate groups?

Nation of Islam shows up on the SPLC's "Hate Map", but while there are several "White Nationalist" groups displayed, Nation of Islam is not listed as "Black Nationalist", but rather as a "General Hate" group. Which made me wonder what a group has to do to become "Black Nationalist".

Survey on "vaccine hesitancy" from a Boston Nurse's College

I actually completed a survey on "vaccine hesitancy" which came from a nurse's college in Boston. It was full of leading questions which would tend to associate attitudes about vaccines with hatred toward people with other political views or the desire to silence them, conspiracy theories, attitudes about science in general, personality traits and life satisfaction. There were several "Christians are bigots" questions. But there were also some "people on the far left are bigots" questions, too.

There was almost nothing concerning the actual information people have received from authorities and scientists concerning the vaccines. Most questions were fashioned in an agree/disagree scale which made it difficult to express disagreement with the actual premise of the question.

My favorite parts were the (1) conspiracy page, where I was asked if I believed that information on aliens was being released to divert attention from actual aliens. For example. And (2) the science page, where it seemed that one had to agree that all science and scientists could be categorized as either wonderful or awful.

Joy Reid recently said that it was necessary to be an anti-vaxxer when Trump was in office. The survey questions would not come close to capturing her reasons for giving up her vaccine hesitancy.

Again, why would a survey on vaccine hesitancy NOT include questions about the information people are receiving about vaccines?

There was an opportunity to say a little something in actual words at the end of the survey. I blasted the conduct of official spokespersons (in general) and the stereotypical questions in the survey and it's odd "science is a monolith" questions in particular.

This survey encourages bigotry and division. I'm not sure that's what they intended. They may just think that way.

Science is a tool. It can be used to invent penicillin, or a rail gun, or Zyklon gas.

And scientists are people, who can do things that are good or ill for their country, and like all people, mostly do things in their own immediate self interest.

The deification of science isn't just wrong, it destroys the notion of science itself. Science is not good or holy. Scientists are not inherently good or inherently wise.

I think it's interesting that since at least the advent of the Industrial Revolution, (probably before when modest achievements were being made with steam and metallurgy), the entrenched left has always tried to frame the debate as being science v. religion. They are still flogging this horse, constantly denigrating, attacking and finally "othering" evangelicals and orthodox Christians over views of inception of life, young earth and creationism. Of course, with all leftard orthodoxy, there are inexplicable exceptions to their tactics. See: Muhamadism.
The irony is, Christianity and scientific progress can, have and will manage perfectly ok together with healthy philosophical debate.

Science isn't something you put on a pedestal. It's merely the best of our knowledge at the time. Nothing is sacred in it or about it. Even the oldest, most universally accepted theories can be altered or even entirely rubbished by a single fact that they can't explain.

It's not democratic, consensus doesn't mean anything. Either the data is good, or it isn't. Either the experiment proved what you set out to prove, or you need to adjust your methodology or change the hypothesis.

We're dealing with a cult of scientism, with a priesthood wearing labcoats.

A cargo cult wearing lab coats, but essentially, this.

They've replaced objectivism with subjectivism, reason with narrative, and haven't realized that those two things are the underpinning of the scientific method. If we live in a universe where there's a "my truth" and a "your truth", and everything is dependent on the observer, there's no reason at all why an experiment might not work if you try it again under the exact same conditions.

Politics, particularly where it crosses with economics.

34 "fully vaxed"*

There is indeed a lot of irony here. Most vaccines are sterilizing, the clot shot is not - it reduces symptoms for about 6 months.

And in parts of the world they are about to force everyone to get a second "booster" to be "fully vaxxed". Biden told the FDA to approve the first booster for everyone - they took a middle ground and only recommended it for at risk people. So...if you don't have the booster are you fully vaxxed? Are people with the booster super fully vaxxed?

Wife works for a large grocery chain. She has started noticing empty shelves. (After I told her the supply chain was broken) She had me pick up two large packages of chicken breasts at Sam's to vac pack and freeze. On top of the ten pounds already in the freezer. Along with the 30 lbs of 90/10 ground beef.

She's noticing it and wanting to start prepping. Along with all the notices of appliances on back order. After we bought her truck from only two on the lot.

86 "a cloth mask stops a COVID viral particle the same way an empty 10 lane highway stops a speeding bus."

The last/best study I found that maybe directly related, was that a mask might reduce chance of infection by 5-10% (other factors ignored). Obviously a mask will stop some larger droplets, so it may reduce (marginally) the amount of inoculum being spread. imo, to deny that is to deny the obvious ...

So if trying to persuade, it is best to concede that valid point, or make the point yourself (obviate the objection). THEN explain the 29 reasons why masks don't work, and are unhealthy. (the aerosols that carry the virus may pass through the mask, more likely around, but I don't think the virus survives just on its own, so it is the size of the aerosol that matters most)

"Yet in the real world people are constantly touching their faces because of the mask."

right ... that is one of the many reasons masks are harmful. There is that false sense of security, so all other normal safety measures get ignored. Washing hands frequently and not rubbing face ... but mostly, healthy people have to be exposed so we get herd immunity.

And even that word, "prove," has no place in science. Your experiment renders a result, and all you ever CAN do is show your results appear to point in one direct or another.

105 A lot of what is passed as science is actually "technology"
there is nothing wrong with tech, but it usually takes current ideas and functions and does new things with them. Most of the industrial advances we have today were tech, the steam engine and the internal combustion engine were mostly guys fiddling with stuff to make it run better.
Science comes about when people ask "I wonder why that works"
Of course when that gets answered it opens up huge potential areas, (though sometimes it doesn't because it doesn't mesh with current thinking on tech)

110 Science isn't something you put on a pedestal. It's merely the best of our knowledge at the time. Nothing is sacred in it or about it. Even the oldest, most universally accepted theories can be altered or even entirely rubbished by a single fact that they can't explain.

And *often* the "scientific" view has been found to be inferior to the old-fashioned traditional view. I remember when they found the wreck of one of the Franklin Expedition ships at the bottom of the Arctic Sea a few years ago. Way back in the 1800s, local Eskimo tribes had told a tale about the top mast of a European ship sticking up out of the ice right in that location. Western researchers knew the story, but discounted it - the ship couldn't have come this way, and the tides indicated it should have been somewhere much further east.

Turns it was right where the Eskimos had said it was. "The Science" was wrong; the local folklore was right. Today researchers have to treat native stories with respect, but if some poor white people state something that contradicts The Science, they're just as arrogant and dismissive.

Alchemy is the attempt to find the inherent reaction within things and arrange them to give you what you want.

133 I have witnessed and participated in true scientific method reviews, as a NASA employee. Test readiness reviews, design reviews, flight techniques reviews, vehicle readiness reviews, flight readiness reviews, and in-flight anomaly reviews.

The climate change and COVID masking, etc., stuff peddled by Our Betters would not survive past 30 minutes in a NASA spaceflight techical review. The chairman would angrily stop the review and tell the presenters to come back in a week with provable, credible, evidence for their proposals.

NOTE: The Challenger and Columbia accidents were the result of not rigorously following standard NASA spaceflight review practices. Mangers who were review chairmen chose to rely on lousy data and the recommendations of non-experts.

Glad you got (mostly) over it. You should have good immunity now. I know quite a few people that have had it; most have fully recovered. Two died, however -- One was an out of shape obese man in his 50s, early on in the pandemic. Not many treatments were known then. The other was a morbidly obese female, 60s, used a scooter to go check the mail.

But here is a puzzler -- By now, we know obesity, fitness and age are factors. But the CDC data collection has gotta be huge. Blood types and bloodwork, race, sex, medications being taken etc etc etc... Why isn't that data being mined for additional danger signs and communicated? Politics is my guess as to why not.

147 A survey I took this week seems to reflect the idea that "science" really has little to do with the "scientific method". It gave me the idea that science should be treated like a religion.

It's Gnosticism (or perhaps a further perversion of it). People use the word "science" when they need knowledge, most obvious when they talk about old religions being forms of science. But it's most abusive with reason when their logic is along the lines of "Fauci is ols and has a title, therefore his knowledge is better than mine" as it completely sidesteps the question of whether he could be mistaken, or, certainly these days, simply lying his ass off.

Not really. NASA and DoD and pretty-much everybody used PowerPoint-type presentations long before there was PowerPoint and similar software. PowerPoint made it easier and faster to make presentation slides, and provided a means to insert flashy graphics, and data charts, plus video clips.

Before PowerPoint, presentation slides were made on a copier using thin, flexible, blue-translucent or clear thermal-sensitive plastic to copy typewriiten or handwritten paper slides; the plastic slides were displayed using overhead projectors. Folks over age 29 must remember this stuff from their school says.

"Evergrande's collapse would be the biggest test that China's financial system has faced in years," says Mark Williams, chief Asia economist at Capital Economics.

Snowed under its crushing debt of $300 billion, Evergrande is so huge that the fallout from any failure could hurt not just China's economy. Contagion could spread to markets beyond China.

203 There is no longer range killer than a scientist who knowingly works for a totalitarian regime.

Young people quickly deal with it, and most healthy people can cope. But I do think there may be "worse than flu" bad impacts, than often last longer, because it was designed to be bad, if not designed as a bio-weapon.

I'd rather never get it, but would rather get it and attain natural immunity than get the (current) vaccines. If Covid is never going away, younger people should get it "while they're young", then mostly immune for life. (till Fauci/Gates/China release their next bio-weapon?)

Friends of mine almost lost their adult daughter thanks to the Astra Zeneca vaxx. She was in an induced coma for two months after she suffered resulting thrombosis from the jab. Once she was on the mend ( not sure if she'll ever be 100 percent again) they were the principal organizers of an arts festival which demanded vaccine proof for entry. Another friend just asked me if I got the jab and before I could answer, she confessed that she got the first shot and ended up in the hospital with heart problems! They asked her if she wanted them to resuscitate her if it came down to it! And she STILL recommends that everyone get the jab!

We seem as a country at that point...a power vacuum in the executive branch has set off a struggle over who will run the US...will it be the IC? The DOD? The DOJ and their FBI Stasi? The DNC will align itself with the winner of course, to hang onto a worthless and feckless political position...

Sample attempts at "persuasion":

A Republican politician is urging people to get the shots
I'm so worried about you
People who don't get shots just have needle-phobia
If you're ashamed to get the shots, just wear a disguise

Not one of these people will accept that we are already immune and the shots carry a greater risk for us (any anyone exposed to our germs) than not getting the shots. Because science.

242 My own personal vaccine hesitancy basically comes down to:
-It's not clear yet how effective it is against C19 and variants
-It's not clear yet whether there are longer term side effects that appear after a year or so, e.g. defective babies or permanent conditions
-It's not clear yet how it would affect my ability to get a later, more effective vaccine
-It's not clear yet whether I've already had it and gained natural immunity (admittedly, this one's actually answerable--just need to make time to get that antibody test)

But those concerns are obviously far too empirical for the new superstition to handle--and I do love that quote, because "superstition disguised as morality" does absolutely describe the 21st century experience.

258 A cargo cult is an indigenist millenarian belief system in which adherents perform rituals which they believe will cause a more technologically advanced society to deliver goods. These cults were first described in Melanesia in the wake of contact with allied military forces during the Second World War.

Isolated and pre-industrial island cultures that were lacking technology found soldiers and supplies arriving in large numbers, often by airdrop. The soldiers would trade with the islanders. After the war, the soldiers departed. Cargo cults arose, attempting to imitate the behaviors of the soldiers, thinking that this would cause the soldiers and their cargo to return. Some cult behaviors involved mimicking the day-to-day activities and dress styles of soldiers, such as performing parade ground drills with wooden or salvaged rifles. You may now continue.

My quest is to find Truth in both Christianity and Science. I would redefine "religion" as what man has constructed around "True Christianity" (perhaps the same for Judaism, given the recent talk here of how Jewish teachings are being subverted with Wokeness).

Truth will/should reveal science and God are in harmony. For me, God had/has to explain things to man based on man's framework at the time. I can therefore accept a world and man that existed long before Adam and Eve. God is allowed "hyperbole", figures of speech to communicate to man's limited perceptions.

God's Word is still my "point of First Contact" with the Divine, and the guidebook. But Independent thinking must be applied to Christianity and Science ... man must think/reason for himself -- or he may get stuck in some worldly "Trust the Science" cult or religion.

I've flown on near-empty flights on Southwest 737-700's and -800's, and couldn't believe it when the cabin crew moved many of the people seated behind the wing to ahead of it, telling us it was for balance reasons. Now I understand.

290 Sorry, I know I keep joking about it too much, but Trask is my favorite Government News story since Nadler shit his pants on TV. Some things are just too on the nose.

A crooked, roid-raging, closeted homosexual spy who fabricated a ridiculous kidnapping gets locked up for chimping out on his wife after a cuck party gone wrong.

I mean, c'mon, right? That's so FBI it's practically unreal. If I write and FBI procedural, Trask is my Inspector Lewis Erskine.

291 Proud Boys and Oath Keepers I heard seemed like legit good guys. But they became a target of FBI/CIA that hates strong Americans resisting the coup.

iirc the two (?) PB is Seattle maybe, got prison for daring to fight back. Oath Keepers were maybe infiltrated ... idk. One Oath Keeper that was there said someone was trying to talk him into going inside ... he said "nope, not going in there". It is probably FBI assets trying to entrap .. as in the Michigan fiasco.

Kyle Rittenhouse another example .. video of them chasing him down, after attacking him, at least one guy was pulling a gun on him ... none of that matters to The Cabal.

294 I haven't gotten the vax or even worn a mask since this all started. It's because I know it has absolutely nothing to do with science or medicine. It's a political op, people. Trying to find a sciency answer or argument about it just means that you've bought into the leftist think-trap hook, line, and sinker.

It's no wonder they're able to create such chaos.

295 The lies are all agitprop, to bully people to submit to the expansion of government. The good news is more people are becoming skeptical, but the bad news is that allows politicians to preach to the choir to gain marginally more votes in an evenly split electorate. Winning one or two election cycles will not change our long-term decline when only one side is constrained by the Constitution. Make politicians address the need to change the paradigm by taking a stance on vouchers, term limited government employment, STEM only 4-year education subsidies, etc.

306 Science is difficult to understand and slightly frightening for people, and the general public is very religious, even if they pretend they are not. So its easier to turn science into a cult or religion where you don't understand the language or what is being done but trust the acolytes and spokesmen as being true and good.

Kind of like medieval Roman Catholicism which was done in latin using rituals explained only to the priests, with a Bible people were forbidden to read. Just trust us, we know what we're doing.

Posted by: @SOEarpiece at September 18, 2021 12:31 PM (6RVJj)

There is a couple additional elements: the supplies provided by the troops was so advanced it seemed miraculous, and when asked how to replicate it the troops couldn't explain it, the theory was made that it was actually supernatural.
The second element was the belief that the goods, the "cargo" would return only if the correct conditions were recreated for it to arrive, so the cultists went to airfields, uniforms, drill and so on to "create the world in which the good things can find a home and return to"
this is pretty much what millennial Christian groups, social engineers, Marxists, and environmentalists are all trying to do as well. Create the conditions to allow the return of the Garden

True, but the vast majority couldn't have read the Bible anyway.
Also, on the plus side, everyone was so visually oriented that they could explain the scenes in painting and identify statues of the Saints by visual clues--their regalia and items associated with particular saints--staffs, swords, animals, etc.

Babylon Bee: "The Federal Bureau of Investigation is disappointed by the low attendance at the D.C. rally they organized for Trump supporters today.

In spite of the FBI's best efforts to lure a bunch of angry MAGA insurrectionists to the Capitol this weekend, only a few hundred FBI agents dressed as MAGA insurrectionists showed up.

"Ivermectin! Get your hot, fresh Ivermectin HEEEERRRRE!" cried one agent selling bootleg Ivermectin tablets from Tractor Supply Company. Unfortunately, he only made a couple of sales to a few other FBI agents from other field offices he didn't recognize."
