41 I like this interpretation on Paul. The colors reflect the bleakness of Paul's ministry and the endless trials he went through. His life is written on his face and pose. I also like the subtlety of the swords-his main attribute. Many times in art he is holding them, ready to use them in spiritual battle. Here, they just hang--like an old soldier's trophies.

I like how in one of his letters, he writes "like I told you in my last letter..." It's the 1st century equivalent to "like I said in my last email..." with the same passive-aggressive snark.

There's light from the upper left, presumably sunlight through a window and then there's a source from the lower right, behind the book. It would have to be a candle or oil lamp but doesn't it seem awfully bright? I wonder if it as supposed to be symbolic, maybe something about St. Paul's writing spreading The Light.

Right now we're only singing two verses which I choose because the 94 year old organist (God bless her; She is a gift to the church) has trouble with hand reach for some of the hymns and now she's having eye trouble so FenSpouse downloads all the hymns onto the computer in case she can't play.

The way Rembrandt captures the aged, perhaps exhausted (sword on the wall not at his waist), Paul in his posture and in his face grips the viewer. Even if you don't know the subject, anyone old enough or with a memory of an aged father can identify with the image. But the dark, worn clothing and woodwork, exquisitely detailed, makes the subtle light around him stand out the more. To see what Rembrandt could achieve with such a limited palette is staggering.

Since I lack the artistic ability to draw, this image makes me itch for a large format camera and black and white film to try to capture the tonalities Rembrandt achieved.

The worst part about skipping the third verse is that most hymns are arranged in story mode. The first is the introduction, the second is the conflict, the third is the climax - where the victory happens and the fourth verse is the resolution.

Totally agree. Something isn't classical because it's old. Classical means timeless. I think very few of today's songs will endure the test of time. One modern instant classic tho is Casting Crowns' "I Can Only Imagine". Just a sublime piece (when sung right). "The Revelation Song" might be close too, but that gets butchered a lot.

The OK and North Tex Children hospitalizations (ICU full) was about ZERO Covid. It was a late summer round of RSV. RSV usually happen later in year when much travel during holidays. Also Texas lost about 20% of ICU rooms do to loss of staff since middle of 2020.

That's an excellent point. Of course the trend of wine moms and helicopter parents keeping their kids from any exposure to anything has been going on for years. I wonder if that can be linked to an increase in disease among children?

I had it, wasn't so bad. I've had worse flus and pneumonia.

A lot of the people I know are masking kids or wanting to get them vaxxed out of concern for grandma and grandpa, NOT about the kids. Now the fact that the oldsters all have had the vax does not enter into this.

As I asked yesterday, how many people get antibody tests to be sure they are immune from polio, measles or tetanus? About none, but wuflu squashes them all like bugs

One interesting part of all this - the fake news is very effective in getting other people to collaborate and extend the fake news.

It is surreal hearing the radio panic report on covid, masks, vax, hospitals , cases, etc... Getting sick or dying from covid does not even register on my top 100 list of concerns yet every day I am inundated with news and propaganda. It seems like I am stuck in some bad dream and can't wake up.

Part of it is bad people doing bad things for bad reasons, but I believe another part is people scared into thinking that they have to lie to keep pushing the official line. Intentional I'm sure, but this makes it MUCH harder to fight back against the original lies...
