I had precisely the same thought, and it's kind of jarring against the damn near photographic realism of the hands. The pitcher is odd, too, in that the plant looks real but the vessel looks like it computer-generated.

It's all odd.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at September 24, 2021 08:35 AM (DCdYk)

32 In my mind, this is really well composed. Symbolically, the past (pictures on the wall) is behind her and the future (the buds on the twigs) is in front of her. The future, however, is not abundant, nor long-lasting - it's a couple of near-lifeless cuttings that will not survive long.

Also, the hands are nicely done.

Despite all this, I wouldn't hang it. It seems like an all too real nursing home setting. Depressing, despite the lady's smile.

83 I agree with others here - there's something about it that makes me not like it even though it's really well done. Are we, the viewer, brought too close to the subject by virtue of being almost in the line of sight? Consider how different this painting would be if she was looking at the vase from the left so her gaze was also out the window.

Ultimately, it has a "Christina's World" feel to it. Long before I knew the backstory on Christina I could tell there was something odd. Her posture wasn't normal. It feels like there's something not normal about the subject here too - maybe Alzheimer's?

101 This is a touching image: the old lady in the winter of her life during the winter time of year but still delighting in new forthcoming life. The pictures in the background are a reminder of past warm seasons that are pleasant, not depressing. The wrinkles on her face and hands bring out her age for the viewer but the expression on her face is youthful delight.

It is a gentle image of hope and delight in life, done simply, but so effectively. The more I look at it, the more I like it.

A lovely painting to end the week with.

It is so very sad that this comment can exist, and sadder still that it rings of truth. The objectification of women during their youths and the devaluation of women after their youths are not new problems. The patriarchal structures that perpetuate such sexism are inherent in our culture and must be fought against at every opportunity.

Yet artists, those souls who answer a higher calling and drag the rest of us into progress and enlightenment, still encourage the same concepts with distressing frequency. Throughout the ages, the progressivism of art still fails to conquer our most prolific and systemic form of oppression. With each generation we get better and things are better today than they have ever been, but it still distressingly problematic. The patriarchal reflection of human forms needs need to be vigilantly guarded against. Such reflections from prior eras are harmful to our continued progress, and they should be viewed only in association with studies to make us better artists and better people by avoiding these past mistakes.

I think that's about it. I found the show insufferable and didn't watch it much. But as near as I can tell, yes - here entire character is being hot and dumb to serve as a lust-object for the leads.

In the early '70s Dixie had a bad batch that tasted like medicine (I had some), and it knocked the props out from under their brand for a time. It wasn't the brewing or the water, they said, but that some kind of chemical had gotten loose on the floor of the brewery, and the fumes tainted the batch. Apparently the stuff was quickly back to normal. But people remember it to this day.

"Faubourg" is merely French for "suburb." Faubourg Marigny, Faubourg St. John, etc., were once suburbs of the city, now neighborhoods within NO.

I'm glad they didn't rename it something even worse.

I'm guessing it's similar to the way ivermectin was taken by billions of people each year and purchased OTC in many 3rd world sh*tholes and then suddenly banned from possessing or selling when COVID dollars appeared.

IIRC there were people in Africa being arrested for trying to smuggle it into their countries where they'd taken it their entire lives prior to 2020.
