Saturday Overnight Open Thread (9/18/21)

The Saturday Night Joke

It’s an unusual time we’re living in.

Safe at last.

I took down my Rebel flag (which you can't buy on EBAY anymore) and peeled the NRA sticker off my rear window.

I disconnected my home alarm system and quit the candy-ass Neighborhood Watch.

I bought two Pakistani flags and put one at each corner of the front yard.

Then I purchased the black flag of ISIS (which you CAN buy on EBAY) and ran it up the flagpole.

Now the local police, sheriff, FBI, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security, Secret Service and other agencies are all watching my house 24/7.

I've NEVER felt safer and I'm saving $69.95 a month that ADT used to charge me.

Plus, I bought burkas for me to wear when I shop or travel. Everyone moves out of the way and security can't pat me down.

If they say I'm a male wearing a burka, I just say I'm feeling like a woman today.

Hot Damn... Safe at last.

That's a B.A.B. (Big Ass Blanket).

Firefighters took serious measures to protect the world's largest tree from wildfire in California.

The General Sherman Tree in Sequoia National Park's Giant Forest was among several sequoias, as well as the Giant Forest Museum and other buildings in the Sierra Nevada area to be wrapped in fire-resistant blankets for protection from potentially intense flames, fire spokeswoman Rebecca Paterson confirmed to NBC News.

The aluminum wrapping is reported to be able to withstand intensive heat for short periods of time and federal officials have used the material for several years in response to wildfires in the U.S. West.

Tonight's History and Tourist Lesson all in one video.

Speaking of tourism. These Incredible State Parks Prove You Have No Idea What the U.S. Looks Like

Iowa? Cornfields. Colorado? Rockies. Vermont? Sugar maples. You know the drill. But apparently, nature didn’t get the memo about what every state is stereotypically supposed to look like. She’s never been much for blanket, one-size-fits-all thinking.

Nature, not borders, calls the landscape shots. Which is why you might round a bend in Buckeye country and suddenly feel transported to Narnia, or stumble across high-north badlands and deserts when you’re expecting snowy peaks. The below state parks are waiting to completely challenge your preconceived notions about US geography. And once you see them, you’ll likely catch yourself wondering: What else might be out there?

Different strokes for different folks. But it is my humble belief that active parenting is a job for the young.

A woman who gave birth at the surprising age of 62, spoke about her unusual pregnancy during the baptism of her children.

Kathy Blattner, 62, of Waterloo, Illinois, first made the news in November of 2020 when she was pregnant. Being past menopause, Blattner wasn’t able to conceive, so her daughter, Sarah Utz, donated some of her eggs a few years ago, however.

Dr. Sherman Silber, Blattner’s doctor, combined the eggs with sperm from Blattner’s husband, aged 66, to create several viable embryos. To avoid any misunderstanding, it should be noted that Blattner’s husband is the step-father of Utz, and so the two do not share any familial DNA, Fox2Now reported.

Live and let live, Bitch.

World hula hoop record holder Getti Kehayova, 43, unintentionally triggered an unhinged Karen in a park in Las Vegas when she hung upside down from some monkey bars and her top drooped showing the bottom of her white sports bra.

Kehayova shared her disturbing experience on TikTok. The video shows an angry unnamed mother verbally laying into Kehayova for wearing “obscene” clothing and being “half-naked” because her stomach was showing in the park where children were playing.

“Everybody around here is seeing this! You’re half-naked right there,” the woman screamed. “This is a place where kids play.”

That Ron White bit was to warm you up for the next story. Virginia Beach woman gets 12 years for what could be biggest coupon scheme in U.S. history

It was described in court papers as possibly the biggest counterfeit coupon scheme in history, costing about 100 retailers and manufacturers more than $31 million in losses.

And the mastermind behind it all? A Virginia Beach entrepreneur and mother of three who’d been designing and printing the highly realistic coupons from her home computer for years.

The wife got more time than the hubby? I am woman hear me roar I guess.

The ONT Musical Interlude

Opinions are like assholes. Including Rolling Stone. The 500 best songs of all time.

AND

On this day: 18 Sep 1970
Jimi Hendrix was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Mary Abbot's Hospital in London at the age of 27 after choking on his own vomit. Hendrix left the message 'I need help bad man', on his managers answer phone earlier that night. Rumors and conspiracy theories grew up around Hendrix’s death. Eric Burdon claimed Jimi had committed suicide, but that’s contradicted by reports that he was in a good frame of mind. In 2009, a former Animals roadie published a book claiming that Jimi’s manager had admitted to him that he arranged the murder of Hendrix, since the guitarist wanted out of his contract. via thisdayinmusic.com

On this day:18 Sep 1991
Rob Tyner lead singer with the American hard rock band MC5 died after he suffered a heart attack in the seat of his parked car in his hometown of Berkley, Michigan. MC5, (shortened from the Motor City Five), formed in Detroit, in 1965, they released their first album, ‘Kick Out the Jams’ in 1969. via thisdayinmusic.com

And this boys and girls is why we don't start our vehicle and leave it running unattended in nice weather in an urban setting. Genius Award Winner.

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham home was seriously damaged Wednesday when it was rammed by a pickup with no one behind the wheel.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. in the 300 block of East Umstead Street.

"The bathroom tub was in the hallway, and all the walls were all just crumbled down," said Nicole Gaines, who was inside the house with her grandmother and uncle at the time. "I walked out of my room, and what used to be the hallway was no longer the hallway."

No one in the home was injured.

Police said a man on nearby Fisher Place had started his pickup and briefly left it unattended. Another man then tried to steal the running truck, and when the owner tried to stop the theft, the truck rolled through a wooded area and into the back of Gaines' grandmother's home, police said.

Sun Lakes Dry Falls is spectacular. The geology of the place is amazing and much more water fell over the falls than the piece states.
The lakes below are remnants, now rain and spring fed, of the Ice Age Floods that roared through the area making the coulee the lakes are in.

I was witness to a robbery this evening. I went to the local computer parts store, and while I was waiting in the checkout line, I saw a trio of teen/college-age black kids in further up the line. Didn't pay much attention to them, but after they finished their business at the register, I saw one of them showing a cardboard box under his hoodie, and then the three of them bolted from the store. Manager followed shortly after, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't going to catch them.

81 i leave my truck running and unattended, albeit locked, for short periods of time if i am in the immediate vicinity: it doesn't have a key fob unlock feature, so the thieves of today can't get in, and, if they do, it's a manual transmission, so they can't drive it anyway...

this is handy in the middle of LA summers when picking up at the UPS Store, etc.

93 Hiya.

<rant on>
My internet link is throttled. (strangling sounds) Asshoes Through & Through lets my cell act as a hot spot, with good-enough speeds... until I use up my allotted hot spot bytes, and they throttle me back to something like 300 baud. Everything is mired in cold molasses. Forget videos, I have a hard time just getting an image. The ONT loads quickly enough (unless it times out), at least the text-only comment part. That show I'm trying to download will still be dl'ing in the morning.

We're in a Wireless Desert, just out of range of everything else. Waiting for StarLink to beam here. Yes, we are looking at other cell services. Meanwhile...

We have four phones on our account. When my hot spot alott ran out, we used Milady Jo's. Then that ran out. (We watch a lot of YouTube &c.) Daughter was here today, so I used her hotspot to DL. Then she left. Back to molasses.

Can we have the four hot spot alotts combined? Daughter & Son don't use theirs. Nope. And why, exactly, is our hot spot throttled on this arbitrary allotment schedule? Or, at all, ever? None of it makes any sense. fume rage grimace growl

This was the very astute point that Nikki Minaj was making, think very long and hard about the drugs you put in your body, especially drugs that aren't needed by most populations.

Because an adverse reaction to the "cure," could potentially be a greater life risk than the purported disease.

To wit, I sometimes get allergies, my wife has allergies, Antihistamine's will shut me off like a light switch, literally knocked out sleeping within 15 minutes of taking it, my wife on the other hand has the complete opposite reaction to them, it causes insomnia.

And when you count cheating, it is even worse for us. But it was nice to see it. I think anyone in a deep blue area should make a point of venturing even thirty miles in a random direction. In the process I knocked one of the 1x4 cedar bats off the siding, that was easy. Upon further inspection I discovered critters feasting upon my house.

Doing do diligence I decided that non-repellant poison is the way to go. I also discovered that in 1994 they treated the Statue of Liberty with the same stuff, hexaflumuron, a bait that can be purchased from Homely Depot for $50.00.

If you click the link there are picks of how bad the infestation was and exactly what they did.
What they didn't do was spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to rid themselves of the pests.

I personally think it is a good litmus test, in that they try. I recall my mother telling me her parents could not cook, but she made a point of trying to be a good cook. The first time my parents had friends over, my mother made Lobster Thermidor. She got it out of a book and it took her three days to do it.

But in general, I do think if a person would sacrifice their religious convictions or deeply held principles for money, that it does diminish my opinion of their convictions.

America is in the shit-shape it is because Washington D.C., every state house, every county courthouse is full of people that routinely sacrifice their principles to keep their "job" as an elected official.

390 if you go to a red area, some have signs saying all should be masked but no one is, not even the cashiers. I am in a very blue area that used to be semi red, they strong armed us until we quit. But even here, 90 percent of stores don't reguire a mask. I am not going to where one, so if you require it, you require I don't frequent your business.

I say a two year old kid masked today. Like I always say, she should sue her teachers and look side eyed at her parents. In this case, she should sue her parents.

So it is true, we are screwed until many people stand up. But...so far every every individual has paid a price and nothing has changed.

I don't know how many people realize that the huge money didn't get near the artists til the 70s. In the 60s it was still outsider music no matter how well it sold and they had to create it themselves with limited budgets and technology, well everyone but the Beatles had to and Elvis, he had pile of cash. But usually the record company and the managers kept most of the money and the musicians got to not have day jobs and could buy fancy clothes. Kind of like pro sports in the 60s and back. Ever read "Boys Of Summer" or "Paper Lion"? If you weren't a major star, you had an off-season job and people who played well for ten years became construction workers or bartenders once they were too old to play anymore.

You remain true to your convictions because they are your convictions, and that is especially true when you have to suffer for them.

In Great Falls park, Potomac river near Washington DC, there are a number of rock islands with sand deposits here and there. There is a native prickly pear cactus that grows there.

There is also a dry area of Alberta around Kamloops, in the rain shadow of local mountains, where cactus can be found.

it has always been a spectacle. The spectacle matters if the country buys in. The NFL hasn't been as important as some think for very long. I recall when the NFL meant nothing in the South and the Redskins were the team people in the South rooted for.

But the NFL became larger than any other sport. Today they want to be as niche as the others, as long as only the right people are interested. The problem is lefties don't care about football That is why the NFL and other sports leagues are all in on fantasy football and sports betting. This is a culture based on the self. Most only care about a team based on how it impacts them personally.

It is the opposite of Redskins fans screaming "We want Dallas" and people from Buffalo giving all there weekends to support their team.

422 I 100% agree with you. So you know there is a 'but' coming.

Well, let me go back to a more central part of the argument. Individual, isolated people standing up to the governing class has not worked. Doing more of the same will lead to the same results.

Worshipping the Lord in a country full of people that share your ideology is not nearly so difficult as worshipping Him in a country where they will lop your head off for it.

The movie Silence - about Christians in the Tokugawa shogunate. One of the Christian characters keeps getting caught by the Japanese government and under threat of torture/execution renounces his faith. 471 The cheap bastards use Canola instead of peanut oil in a lot of peanut butter. It oxidizes, and starts to smell (and taste) like varnish, or paint. Because that's what it is, basically. Be prepared, any number of things could happen. Could see millions flood across the border in a matter of weeks. This is what they want. A collapse of the existing order. A lot of younger and not so younger have been agitating for a collapse of the system (because they are fucking idiots). 478 Well, all the welding is now done on my dune buggy floor pan, and I have one and a half coats of paint on it. Welded the jacking points on this morning, and touched up a few cracked seams.

Got out a quart of Gemplers rust-converting primer, and brushed a coat on both top and bottom. Was initially going to treat only the actual rusty areas (just surface rust) but it went on so easily, I just did it all. Took only a pint or so.

Went and worked on another car for several hours, and the rust converter had dried well, so I got out a can of black Tremclad and did the top surface with that. Ran out of paint with about 2.5 square feet left to cover. One more quart, and it's done.

There is a reason so many late night hosts have asked to have wining Ryder Cupper's on the show. If you look back over the years, there have been some amazing moments that can't really be described here. Check out The War by the Shore and Brookline. But there are also many years where the Euros broke through and to be honest I have never seen anyone celebrate in that way.

Yes, it's best for a kitten to have a playmate of his own kind. This allows them to play and learn properly. A lone kitten will try to play with you, and he will get rough. Sometimes it will work out, but it's best two have two.

Miley and I got two kittens a few months ago, who are now pushing 6 months old. We had planned to get only one, but took two there at the last. It was clear that one of the kittens freaked out when alone. The other kitten wasn't so bad about that.

I looked into it when I started thinking seriously about a dog. The problem is the manufacturers offshore production, or buy the precursor ingredients offshore. Wheat flour or protein powders can be adulterated and kill them, it's happened before.

Even Rawhide chew toys from you know where were found to be poisonous or contaminated. Maybe make friends with a butcher or beef farmer/rancher. Only wholesome U.S.A. grown food for family. Animal or otherwise. They are sneaking all kinds of that shit in our food. God only knows what's in it.

Had to hand feed her for two months. I gradually introduced some Hill's I/D canned food. She came around.

A diet of rice and boiled beef had always been recommended by my vet whenever my dogs were sick or were recovering from surgery, etc.
In the case of SHTF, one could always substitute squirrels, rabbits, etc., as long as you keep enough bulk rice. I tend to pack and freeze any leftover trimmings from any meat I cook, that I can't consume myself. I also stockpile canned food when its on sale. The best however tends to be rice with whatever critter you can trap and process. Never forget your pets in case of SHTF.

It's an unaltered male, and sprays, so can't let him in. He's a great hunter, so not too worried about feeding. I do give a little food. More so in winter.

In America, most dogs are curious about the grill. In China, they wok away.

Heh. Yeah, rickl would have been beside himself with joy over this event. Space X's first stage was on its 3rd use, and recovered successfully, as is now routine. The capsule was on its second trip to space and back. Reusable parts -- Go figure.

622 Hi, Slap! How are you? Long time no see!

Posted by: JQ, a hick in the sticks at September 19, 2021 02:05 AM (dB4Iz)

623 A diet of rice and boiled beef had always been recommended by my vet whenever my dogs were sick or were recovering from surgery, etc.

624 It's the current styles, too. My mom graduated in 54 and I remember looking at her yearbook and everyone looked 35.

My folks graduated HS in 54 too. My Mom kept the same hairdo, or close to it, till her death in 2014. Maybe she did an adult version of it, but didn't change much since the 50s.

I told him I was a Slapweaselian, and was certified "Clear" through Voltar II. Didn't tell him about Voltar the Conehead, but really, did it matter?

632 We have an old Chihuahua mix. He's evil and diabetic. Gets very expensive food and insulin twice a day. Every year for the past three years we have nursed him through doggy icu. We're convinced we can't do it again. This dog is going to put us in the poor house. Sam the evil little old chihuahua.
