No movie thread today. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Beginner Problem - Black To Play (1425)

Goal: Black to force mate in 2 moves
Hint: Force White's king to the back rank, then deliver mate

Yes, Sometimes Chess Piece Designers Go A Little Overboard On The Knights:

chess pic 20210918.jpg
Just to be clear, the upper pic is an obvious parody. But the lower pic is a photo of an actual chess set you can buy.

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1416)

Goal: White can force mate in 5 moves
Hint: Force the Black king into the corner, the bishop cuts off his escape

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1422)

White needs to force mate in 2 moves. That is the information that was presented when I first saw this puzzle, so it would not be fair to withhold it. The trick is to find the "key" first move, which I only found after a long period of experimentation. Which is why it's an 'advanced' problem. So you're job is to make me look bad by finding the solution quickly.

I doubt I'd be ever able to see this OTB.

Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - Black To Play

20210918 Problem 1.jpg
4r1k1/1pp1qpp1/3p3p/3P4/PPP2R2/3Q2P1/R4KP1/4r3 b - - 0 1

It's mate in 2:

1...Rf1+
2.Kxf1 Qe1#

Also

1...Rf1+
2.Qxf1 Qe3# (h/t NoOne NoHow for finding this one)

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20210918 Problem 2.jpg
q5r1/4N1bk/pp1pP2p/2r2p2/P7/2nQ3P/1PB4B/R3R1Kb w - - 0 1

1. Qxf5+

I suppose this move was rather obvious.

1...Rxf5

1...Kh8?? loses immediately to 2.Qh7#

And now you have to look ahead a bit and see that knight has to deliver the mate from f7 while the bishop covers the flight square.

2.Bxf5+ Kh8
3.Ng6+ Kh7
4.Ne5+

This is the correct square the knight must go to to get to f7.

4...Kh8
5.Nf7#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20210918 Problem 3.jpg
2Q4K/6R1/8/8/7k/8/6rr/6R1 w - - 0 1

1.Qc2!

There's no way I can describe how I found this move other than "I play around with the position until I found it." Now, Black has a number of possible respones:

1...Rxc2 2.Rh7#

I think that's the most obvious response. Here are some alternatives:

1...Rxg7 2.Qxh2#
1...Rxg1 2.Qh7#
1...Rg5 2.Qxh2#
1...Kh5 2.Qh7#
1...Rg3 2.Qh7#
1...Rg6 2.Qxh2#

Hope to see you next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

On another chess note, I got a slightly pleased laugh that the actual Soviet/From Russia-Georgina who the "Queen's Gambit" movie was based on, is suing "Netflix"for being untruthful about her life. She did compete and win against men. I laughed because the Chess champion is about 80 and I can't stand Netflix anyway because the Obama;s have a huge stake in them:

Yes, I probably should've mentioned this. I doubt the suit is going to go anywhere. It's a fictional story for pete's sake, with the usual disclaimer about any resemblance to
any persons living or dead being coincidental.

Reminds me when Bobby Fischer sued the makers of the movie 'Searching For Bobby Fischer' for using his name in the title without his permission. Like his name was licensed property. He was laughed out of court. I think this suit is going to get laughed out of court, too.

44 The two Infrastructure bills are a huge deal. We'll be living with the consequences forever.

Media focus is on Manchin (D-WV). But Sinema is the key (D-AZ). And she's been MIA and no one talks about her. Assuming no R breaks ranks, and none have so far, the Ds need both to get to 50 to enable Kamala to break the tie.

If Sinema stays NO, then Manchin's vote is irrelevant and he'll vote NO to look good back home.

If she votes YES, then Manchin will cash in his winning lottery ticket.

Is there reason for hope here?

Two bits of Kubrick news: first, a 4k disc of Clockwork Orange is being released this week.

Second, I found an article where Stanley actually *explained* the ending of 2001. He admitted that when you explain it in words, it sounds stupid, and works better in a purely visual medium.

I also commented that I've noticed whenever Kubrick was interviewed, he always was very careful to not only use really proper English, but he never used slang or clever turns-of-phrase. Made him sound like even more of an incredible person IMHO.

238 Billy, here's the excerpt, from an unreleased interview Stanley gave in 1980:

"I've tried to avoid doing this ever since the picture came out. When you just say the ideas they sound foolish, whereas if they're dramatized one feels it, but I'll try. The idea was supposed to be that he is taken in by god-like entities, creatures of pure energy and intelligence with no shape or form. They put him in what I suppose you could describe as a human zoo to study him, and his whole life passes from that point on in that room. And he has no sense of time. It just seems to happen as it does in the film."

"They had some idea of something that [Bowman] might think was pretty, but wasn't quite sure. When they get finished with him, as happens in so many myths of all cultures in the world, he is transformed into some kind of super being and sent back to Earth, transformed and made into some sort of superman," Kubrick concludes, alluding to the star baby. "We have to only guess what happens when he goes back. It is the pattern of a great deal of mythology, and that is what we were trying to suggest."

265 For making chessboards, if you don't have power tools, you need to adapt :-)

1. Get a piece of stain grade plywood.
2. Cut to the size of chess board you want
3. Get dark, wood grain contact paper
4. Cut contact paper into 2" or 21/4" squares
5. Apply cut out squares to plywood
6. Apply 4 or 5 coats of varnish
7. Put felt on bottom of board.

350 One hunch I have as to why Brits enjoy Indian food so much, is that India was their colony for so long.

So they feel as though they had a part in inventing the Indian dishes that are so known and loved today, I guess.

364 sock_rat_eez, funny story about the 2001 soundtrack:

The music you hear was all from records Stanley already had in his collection, but he had the idea that the film would need an original soundtrack, so he hired Alex North-- who co-wrote Unchained Melody, among other huge songs-- to create one.

Alex looked at the film clips, worked hard, wrote the music, sent his soundtrack score to Stanley, and got paid, but never heard anything else. He wasn't even invited to any premieres.

North figured oh well, I'll just go pay to see it myself. So he went to see it, and discovered Stanley didn't use a single note of the soundtrack he had worked so hard to write.

I admit it was kind of a dick move for Stan to do that. He made it up to Alex in the 1990s a tiny bit though when a record company (Varese Sarabande?) discovered the lost soundtrack, asked Kubrick if they could release it on CD as "the lost 2001 soundtrack," and Stanley said, sure go ahead.

British cuisine...wait, I don't think you can even call it cuisine, has to be the most boring food on earth. No matter where you go, there is usually an indigenous cuisine that is unique to that place. Usually involves local spices and vegetables. Even poor third world countries do a better job.

The pics I saw today looked like Treasury agents who normally process background checks and interview people to try and find the UPS store copy machines that are producing $20s, real strack and wearing Sears casuals with identical sunglasses.
