Love the cat vids!
Best cat vid of the week is the cat falling from the upper deck of the Miami stadium to the guys who caught it in a flag. Wild stuff. The heavy seas vid reminds me I used to have a job on a ship and watched from the bridge while half the ship went under. The wait for it to bob up again was a pucker factor of 11. Hey ace! Hey everybody!
I shared this really late last night, hope no one minds if I post again. I want to call this guy, John Jones, a Darwin Award winner, but at the same time the story is sad and frankly scary. (This happened in 2009 btw, but I believe the cave wasn't sealed until 2019.) Basically this "cave spelunker" thought he could scooch down a narrow opening called "the Birth Canal" at Nutty Putty Cave in Utah, but it turned out this cavity was so narrow, John couldn't even breath properly during his rescue. On Friday getting out of the car in a Walmart parking-lot in the car next-door, a woman had the window down all the way and had a husky pup on her lap who began barking at me getting out of the car. I said 'Hi' to her and let the pup sniff and lick my fingers and I head-scratched him a bit before leaving for the store. About that "gun trick" in the right column: just how the F do you get your hands on the gun to push it in hard enough so the slide is pushed back? At that point if I were making a grab, I'd get my thumb in front of the hammer.
I dunno, I just think if somebody had their semi stuck into your ribs, they'll probably squeeze off a round before you can get your hands anywhere near the gun. YMMV. Posted by: clutch cargo - processed in a facility that may contain lead at September 13, 2021 07:15 PM (wAnMi) 196

I think the whole claustrophobia thing - or lack thereof - is mostly hard-wired into people. Seems that way.
I'm generally OK but in a tiny few instances have had the circuit fire off. A pretty small swim-through on a dive down in Cozumel - did not enjoy. And one time in a mine. But just reading about the other-than-human creatures who explore the cenotes in Mexico (huge cavern systems, all filled with water), yikes. Evening.
Not sure if it was a cat or a rabbit but when I was driving to the store I saw a poor little furry thingy pulling itself along with its front legs because it's back half got run over. Fucking shit, man. I think it eventually got killed shortly after but...fucking shit, maaaaan! I hate watching ameenuhls suffer. Me: *Watching TV, a dying third world child is on, skin and bones, covered in flies, buzzards waiting to pull him to pieces while Sally Strutgers sits in the corner with a big bucket of KFC*. Them's the breaks, kid. Me: *Seeing a poor animal suffer terribly* The world is a savage and terrible place governed by a mad insane god. The ethos of WWII to 1980 hole snipes in combat is to keep power on. Speed was life, in the days without hypersonic missiles. We had a specific battle override button that locked out most auto shutdowns on my first ship. Nowadays, I'll bet it is electrical power and 400 Hz power that need to be kept working. The USN had a number of bows blown or or snapped off in a typhoon. Speed needs to come down fast to save the transverse bulkheads. Have too many smashed and the ship can not be saved. Steam ships with geared steam-driven turbine running the bull gear are simply not as fast to slow down. On my one steam ship, all back full stops the ship in a couple of miles. On my gas-turbine ship with controllable pitch propellers, I could and did stop the ship in it's own ship's length. Granted, everything on the ship was shuddering from the force needed. We were rated to a 60 degree roll been there several times. When it rolls hard it kinda hangs there shaking for 10-15 seconds. Seemed like minutes at the time. Been there done that. USS Memphis (ex-USS Tennessee, ACR-10) was lost to a trio of rogue waves in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on 29 August 1916. First attributed to a seismic event, it is now thought that the waves were generated by a series of hurricanes that were in the area. She struck bottom at least once, in 45 feet of water, before being driven to a rocky shore.

And many years ago, watching that movie on TV, for the first time I realized Arkin was speaking perfect unaccented Russian (saw it as a kid in the drive-in). There's even humor in it that is really based on knowing Russian culture - in the 60s, even slapstick comedies had more depth to them than many "serious" things done today.
Posted by: Fox2! -------- I had a conversation with the then-Captain of the QE II regarding this event (two posts): "At 0410 the rogue wave was sighted right ahead, looming out of the darkness from 220°, it looked as though the ship was heading straight for the white cliffs of Dover. The wave seemed to take ages to arrive but it was probably less than a minute before it broke with tremendous force over the bow. An incredible shudder went through the ship, followed a few minutes later by two smaller shudders. There seemed to be two waves in succession as the ship fell into the 'hole' behind the first one. The second wave of 28-29 m (period 13 seconds), whilst breaking, crashed over the foredeck, carrying away the forward whistle mast. Second post: "Captain Warwick admits that sometimes it can be difficult to gauge the height of a wave, but in this case the crest was more or less level with the line of sight for those on the bridge, about 29 m above the surface; additionally, the officers on the bridge confirmed that it was definitely not a swell wave. The presence of extreme waves was also recorded by Canadian weather buoys moored in the area, and the maximum measured height from buoy 44141 was 30 m (98 feet.)"

My worst flight was a C-141 from MacDill AFB to Saudi Arabia. I think it took 3 days; 2 breakdowns and 1 emergency landing. All issues were fixed by the USAF's fine mechanics though (Aim High, Yo!!). We did make it safely to our destination, Riyadh. Riyadh sucks. Found out that C-141 was near the end of it's 'life cycle' and we were it's last flight. My guess is they refurbished it and it's still flying today.

Air India left me stranded in Cairo for 48 hours on a NY to London to Nairobi flight. Taking off from London, while we were still climbing we started going down, back to the airport. Plane problems.
We get to Cairo eventually. Plane problems again. Mind you, Cairo wasn't on the itinerary. We were stuck at the grotty old terminal filled with muzzies, where all the flights listed were to places like Khartoum and Tripoli. The lady from the embassy called my mom to tell her I was safe. (I was 20.) My mom was like, "CAIRO? What's she doing in Cairo?" Got to Nairobi finally to meet up at the National Museum of Kenya with the Koobi Fora Field School group. The professor running it exclaimed, "I wondered what happened to you!" I laugh about it now but it killed my interest in Egypt and Egyptian history for good. They were not nice people. Very rude to infidel women. Posted by: JuJuBee at September 13, 2021 08:53 PM (Y0dLt) 666

I have two worst flight stories, maybe three.
1. Frontier Airlines from San Diego to Madison, WI. Delayed by six hours, then a stop in Denver, where they had to deplane us to give our plane to another flight, without collecting our luggage, and then getting sent to a hotel without even an overnight bag. With my six year old son. Bastards told us we were getting back on the plane, and then didn't say anything else, so when I went to get back on, they said it wasn't my flight anymore. I had to threaten a few people to get a voucher for the hotel. Never, never again. The entire airline can FOAD. 2. Military hop from Elmendorf AFB to Shemya AFS, C-120 with jump seats. Look it up. No toilet, no stops, 60 mph cross winds on landing. 'nuff said. Posted by: tcn in AK, Hail to the Thief at September 13, 2021 08:56 PM (SDdx5) 681
