I shared this really late last night, hope no one minds if I post again. I want to call this guy, John Jones, a Darwin Award winner, but at the same time the story is sad and frankly scary. (This happened in 2009 btw, but I believe the cave wasn't sealed until 2019.)
Basically this "cave spelunker" thought he could scooch down a narrow opening called "the Birth Canal" at Nutty Putty Cave in Utah, but it turned out this cavity was so narrow, John couldn't even breath properly during his rescue.

Was on a big ship mid Atlantic when at dinner we were hit with a pretty big one. What was impressive was the trough. The ship, one that is over 1100' long, 79,000 tones with a beam of 135' dipped over at about 15 degrees.
The dinners gasped and screamed and the servers were wide eyed. Fun times.

History of the deepest cave in the world -- Veryovkina in old Soviet Georgia -- and how they figured out all the branches and routes is pretty damn cool. There's a few stories of sudden floods where it was literally drop everything, no matter how valuable or important, and scurry up the rope lines, literally hundreds of feet in mid-air, so you could find high enough ground to watch the flood spill over into another low cavern.

Surf movie Step Into Liquid ends with a segment about the then-top surfers in the world flying in here and chartering a boat to get out to the Cortez Bank, west of San Clemente Island, to surf some monster waves that only break once in a while. Amazing.

I'm generally OK but in a tiny few instances have had the circuit fire off. A pretty small swim-through on a dive down in Cozumel - did not enjoy. And one time in a mine.
But just reading about the other-than-human creatures who explore the cenotes in Mexico (huge cavern systems, all filled with water), yikes. Squeezes so small you have to take off your gear and place it on the other side, then move through. Far far beyond unimaginable.

I don't know much about guns, but the Sigs have the DA double action hammer, when cocked, it takes, like, what, 4lbs of pressure to release that hammer? That's nothing.

Its a function of the shaft bearing coupling, and the sheer rotational inertia of the shaft. Plus, on larger ships it is rare to have the props out of the water. Well, unless you are sinking bow first.
Newer ships have stabilizers to help. In my day, you sucked it up.

Ohh, yeah, I had wanted to mention that one too but forgot all about it. Game companies like CCP and CDPR bent over backwards for China starting in the mid 2000s, regularly lying to their customers about the underlying reasons, an now they're being put in their place.
And anyone who's been paying somewhat close attention to how they structure business deals knows that they've got all the legal framework in place to nationalize all the brick-and-mortar ventures literally overnight, just as soon as Western revenge is no longer a credible threat.

I do recall a few cases where reducing speed ASAP was key, where the bows were blown off. Of course forgetting the details but one of the cruisers (I think) of the many we had damaged during the Guadalcanal battles actually proceeded in reverse all the way to a repair yard (Australia?) after losing its bow to a Long Lance.

The USN had a number of bows blown or or snapped off in a typhoon. Speed needs to come down fast to save the transverse bulkheads. Have too many smashed and the ship can not be saved.
Steam ships with geared steam-driven turbine running the bull gear are simply not as fast to slow down. On my one steam ship, all back full stops the ship in a couple of miles.
On my gas-turbine ship with controllable pitch propellers, I could and did stop the ship in it's own ship's length. Granted, everything on the ship was shuddering from the force needed. But it can be done.

Late to this Salty - but as OOD, you never should get into this position, your ship - either frigate or destroyer - can easily do 28 knots (non-classified) to get westward of any rotating seas if East coast or eastward if PACFleet - it's just not that hard. People think because of films that storms are impossible to avoid but today's Navy can be completely stay out of range - doesn't mean that waves aren't wild, but you are not going to stress the righting arm....

I had one of the most terrifying landings of my life on Vietnam Airlines. It was just a short hop from HCM City to Danang but I thought it was all over.
After three tries, the pilot turned around and we went back to Tan Son Nhat.

And FFS, only time I was ever bumped up to int'l first class (still inexplicable to me) was on Singapore (good!) .... for a 4-hour flight (bad!). Breakfast hour, so had my only taste of Dom Perignon - well, more than a taste. Told the flight attendant to keep it coming. I actually f***ed with the customs guys on arrival, exhibiting all the good judgement that alcohol and sleeplessness over 2 days will provide. Not a great idea - Vietnam. But they scowled and passed me through.

One of my best flights was on Air Ziare. It was on a DC-10. They had two, When they were not in use by Maboutu or his wife the flew between Kinshasa and London. Flight I was on had 12 passengers. I had the entire back half of the plane to myself. Slept the whole flight.

I was going full speed (Flank III ) as part of INSURV requirements when I crashed-back the ship.
Now it is easy to avoid storms, but back in the day it was not as easy. I did not see a weather fax until my third ship.
My second ship was routed by the weather guessers into a big storm. All I got was an Oops. We fucked up by trusting them.

Aussie pilots work for many Asian airlines and have since at least the early 90s. I was quite surprised when the captain spoke on the Singapore Airlines plane he had a very distinct Aussie accent.
I heard later that it was due to a prolonged pilots strike in Australia in the 80s that drove the pilots north for work.

Baby-flots, consistent with prior practice, basically did dive-bomb approaches and max-climb departures (fuel efficiency) - which were fun. Especially with Euroweenies there for the first time.
And I've previously told the one about the ramp guys refueling the plane in Vladikavkaz, lit cigarettes dancing on their lips as they argued over the latest Moscow Dynamo game or something. Euroweenie guy near me was terribly concerned.

And many years ago, watching that movie on TV, for the first time I realized Arkin was speaking perfect unaccented Russian (saw it as a kid in the drive-in).
There's even humor in it that is really based on knowing Russian culture - in the 60s, even slapstick comedies had more depth to them than many "serious" things done today.

I had a conversation with the then-Captain of the QE II regarding this event (two posts): "At 0410 the rogue wave was sighted right ahead, looming out of the darkness from 220°, it looked as though the ship was heading straight for the white cliffs of Dover. The wave seemed to take ages to arrive but it was probably less than a minute before it broke with tremendous force over the bow. An incredible shudder went through the ship, followed a few minutes later by two smaller shudders. There seemed to be two waves in succession as the ship fell into the 'hole' behind the first one. The second wave of 28-29 m (period 13 seconds), whilst breaking, crashed over the foredeck, carrying away the forward whistle mast.

We get to Cairo eventually. Plane problems again. Mind you, Cairo wasn't on the itinerary. We were stuck at the grotty old terminal filled with muzzies, where all the flights listed were to places like Khartoum and Tripoli. The lady from the embassy called my mom to tell her I was safe. (I was 20.) My mom was like, "CAIRO? What's she doing in Cairo?"
Got to Nairobi finally to meet up at the National Museum of Kenya with the Koobi Fora Field School group. The professor running it exclaimed, "I wondered what happened to you!"
I laugh about it now but it killed my interest in Egypt and Egyptian history for good. They were not nice people. Very rude to infidel women.

1. Frontier Airlines from San Diego to Madison, WI. Delayed by six hours, then a stop in Denver, where they had to deplane us to give our plane to another flight, without collecting our luggage, and then getting sent to a hotel without even an overnight bag. With my six year old son. Bastards told us we were getting back on the plane, and then didn't say anything else, so when I went to get back on, they said it wasn't my flight anymore. I had to threaten a few people to get a voucher for the hotel. Never, never again. The entire airline can FOAD.
2. Military hop from Elmendorf AFB to Shemya AFS, C-120 with jump seats. Look it up. No toilet, no stops, 60 mph cross winds on landing. 'nuff said.

After the Iraq invasion of Kuwait, I had to go TDY to another gulf country for a couple of months, and when it was time to fly back to my post, I got unexpectedly sidetracked to Cairo. Airport security saw my dip passport and posted an armed guard to stay with me. Bless his heart, he took the job seriously...as in followed me into the women's bathroom and made everyone else get out.
When I finally got on a flight out, it was Tanzania Air, complete with live chickens and goats, and passengers firing up Bunsen burners to make fresh tea.
I prayed long and hard that we landed safely, which surprisingly, we did. But never, ever again will I fly that airline.
