Top Story

  • WhatsApp - the secure end-to-end encrypted messaging app - isn't quite. (Gizmodo)

    Says WhatsApp:
We can't read or listen to your personal conversations, as they are end-to-end encrypted. This will never change
On the other hand, if someone reports you for misconduct, WhatsApp's moderation team can see your messages.

You need to read past the scary headline and get into the details before you find out what's going on: Someone pressing that report button sends the decrypted messages from you straight back to WhatsApp. It has to work that way, or you'd have no way of handling complaints. But it means - and this should be obvious anyway - that no matter how secure the channel, if the person at the other end can't be trusted, you have no security at all.

Think of WhatsApp as a room full of classified documents and the report button as Bradley Manning.

Tech News

  • Or think of WhatsApp as a McDonald's Monopoly contest and the report button as a database connection error. (Bleeping Computer)

One thing I learned long ago is if you're lazy and hard-code database connection parameters in some pre-production code, make sure they're assigned to variables well outside any potential stack trace. Because if you put them right in the connection call, and you forget that debug mode is enabled on the application server, and the pre-production code gets rushed into production - all events with a 95% or better probability - then the first time you have a connection error every single user will see your database password.

Of course your database should be locked to your internal network and firewalled both locally and at the network boundary, right? And you wouldn't also leak the login credentials for the server itself. Nobody would be that silly.

  • IBM's Power 10 CPUs are on their way. (AnandTech)

15 cores with 8 threads per core on each chip, and two chips per socket. 30MB L2 and 128MB L3 cache. 1TB memory bandwidth per socket, 1TB of inter-socket interconnect, and 512GB of PCIe 5.0 for I/O.

Just don't ask how much it costs.

  • The SEC is suing Coinbase over its Lend program which doesn't even exist yet. (Coinbase)

The SEC asked the crypto industry to provide information on upcoming projects so that the SEC could provide regulatory guidance. Coinbase - the fools - took them at their word. And now the SEC has filed notice of intent to sue Coinbase, over a product that doesn't exist, without at any point before or since saying what the substance of the complaint is.

  • GitHub creates useless garbage merges. (Kernel.org)

It's just Linus Torvalds spouting off again. It's not like he invented Git or anything.

    ...

    Oh.

  • Hacking hackers hacked the Jenkins project's Confluence server... And used it to mine Monero. (Bleeping Computer)

This could have been a crippling supply-chain attack, because Jenkins is widely used to automate software testing.

Fortunately for us all, the hackers were idiots.

  • Intel is spending $80 billion on two new chip plants in Europe. (Thurrott.com)

You might well ask why not in the US, and the answer is they are already expanding all their facilities in the US and building a huge new facility in Arizona as well.

They're betting that demand for semiconductors isn't going to decline any time soon - and hedging against the possibility of disruption in the Far East. Even short of a war, China could cause significant mischief.

  • Almost forgot this one. We've used two monitoring services at my day job - Datadog and StatusCake. (I also use StatusCake for my own servers.)

The monitoring agent for Datadog is a 750MB install that includes its own version of Python. I have no idea what is going on in there; it's completely unauditable and I consider it a supply chain attack waiting to happen.

The monitoring agent for StatusCake fits on one page. I read through it, passed it on to our new sysadmin, he read through it, and we shrugged and are going to install it on all our servers.

Not everything needs to be an avalanche of crap.

4 Coinbase's lawyer should send a response letter stating that the SEC can't sue because no one has been hurt yet, and once the product is released it will be too late to sue. Hell that should be thr response to every government case from here forward, last them suck on the bullshit standard they created to steal an election

5 Willowed:

At 9 this am I go to the barbershop The Male Room. This is the place, I think, that made the national news in May of '20 for refusing to shut down completely in the face of governmental lockdown. I'd buy a haircut and beard trim from them just to show support. But the staff are all pleasant-looking if not downright attractive women -- I stopped in yesterday to make my appointment, and was very pleased. No face diapers and no signs on the doors!

Apparently you also get a consultation about your hair style and other grooming matters. Their grooming tips on their website regarding shaving are more than half right, which is better than I expected.

6 ut it means - and this should be obvious anyway - that no matter how secure the channel, if the person at the other end can't be trusted, you have no security at all.

that says it all. I know dick about computers even though though I have been around since Aol 1.0. Hell, I recall watching people talk over the internet in the very early 1980s. I didn't fully get it, but I doubt many can say they experienced that it if wasn't government related.

Anyway. I barely use the net other than for surfing, research and chatting here. But I know my info has been pwned countless times. It is pretty absurd that people think the net will protect their privacy. I do think the play is to invest in net security firms. Sure they won't give you what you want, but they offer hope when no hope is around.

I go to a Vietnamese barbershop. They are reasonably priced and do a good job. They believe in the mask thing which is odd. But people are odd, they will jump through all types of hoops if their tribe tells them to do so. To be honest, I really don't give a crap at this point. That we are more masked today than even three months ago is sad. That most people go along with this based on net commentary is not a good sign for this country.

I will watch it. But I recall Australia being lost years ago. There was an NRA video that showed them destroying firearms as some type of heathen ritual.

I remember when Spain bailed out on the War on Terror. Some American politico mentioned it and Spain went Ape Shit. The American politician mentioned Spanish Bullfighters and that was too much. The literally lost it. It might have hit to close to home. The default is always to move left. That should concern everyone.

Oh, there are more horrors I could relate -- not about Birmingham, but the difficulties I'm going to have returning to Da Swamp. On the other hand, the weather here has been fairly nice (if a little hot and humid for my preference), the people are cheerful and friendly, and there is a very good park about 10 minutes' drive away where I can work out.

I even found ethanol-free gas at a Circle K near I-65, $2.99/gal. where E10 87 octane is $2.69. And $2.99 was what I was paying for E0 back in the dump.

My barbershop is also run by a vietnamese family, and even last year they seemed to not give 2 shits about wearing a mask. I think they just judge by each customer, if you come in with one on they'll wear one while cutting your hair, but if you don't have it on they'll be more relaxed themselves.

Too many people are buying into the lie that "Delta is even worse!!!!!" Instead of the reality that the vaccine wears off after 4 months, it's not that the flu became more contagious, it's just that everyone is no longer protected by the weak b.s. vaccine that was pushed on us as some miracle. Hopefully history looks back on 2020-2022 as the "Duped Ages" as everyone is being conned again and again.

Posted by: Rbastid at September 08, 2021 04:45 AM (B6QP7)

20 Well, one of the charms of Birmingham for me has been that there is no insistence on the face muzzles. Some places have signs, "Masks recommended" or "suggested," but nobody bothers me about it when I walk in. The hotel here has been the only one. They have left me in peace since I showed my doctor's med letter at check-in.

It's complex. Entergy says my area should be powered back up by tomorrow. However, I am 6 hours' drive from there. If we drive down and the power is NOT on, we are screwed. I've written to, and will call, the apartment complex office. But knowing how half-assedly they operate, I can't be sure that the power in my unit, or Linda's, will be restored.

The only thing I can think to do is to take a room closer to the city, say about 2-3 hours' drive, as a staging area. Then I can drive down and return the same day if the power is not restored. If it is, I can spend the night, drive back and get Linda and the cats, and head back in. But it all depends on several factors, most of which I don't control and am having trouble getting info on!

I am working remotely here, but eventually when the campus opens back up, I'll need to be in the office at least some of the time. The writers' group is foundering anyway with all the interruptions of last year's mask nonsense and now this. My position comes down to, "I don't want to go back -- and in fact want to find a good place away from the hot humid South to retire." When you have to go through this much disruption every few years just because of your location, it's time for a new location.

I'm fairly certain that the substance of the complaint is that Biden announced a couple of months ago that bitcoin was bad and that the feds were going after it.

I remember it because it happened right after a big bitcoin "bank" type service went public and stock was available. Biden tanked it of course, which is perfectly legal.

The Huey P. Narrow, as it used to be known, underwent a long renovation and restructuring. It's now the superhighway across the river that it should always have been. Like most of the areas around here, I pronounce it "Pesthole." No, the pronunciation is pretty simple, "Muh-RERR-Oh." Or sometimes "Muh-RERR-uh." (As a part-Canadian, one of the things I hate about this area is the mushmouth talk.)

Heh! I always heard it pronounced like its spelled.

I have to say that I really like our neighborhood, and we had quite the variety of people in it. My neighbors were Tulane grads (white as the wind driven snow), the neighbors next to them were LSU fans (redneck coon asses) and the guy across was NOLA Parish Sherriff who looked just like the guy who played Steve Erkel's father on that 80s sit com.

Well, then clot shot roster is the least of their worries. They're bringing in someone from the other side whose gonna be the HMFIC over engineering and production. The disdain for the new person is palpable. People are already looking for another job.

that is sad to hear. I can only think of one time my parents and I disagreed on such issues. It was when Blair and Clinton bombed in Bosnia. I supported Blair; Clinton was mostly a potted plant. In the end, nothing they did made much of a difference. I bought in with Blair.

I doubt my parents would recognize what is going on today and what passes for normal American political debate.
