Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Unexpectedly, Job Creation Slows to a Trickle Amidst Lockdowns and MalaiseThe economy's sundowning. Restaurants and bars shed the most jobs. Leisure and hospitality jobs, which had been the primary driver of overall gains at 350,000 per month for the past six months, stalled in August as the unemployment rate in the industry ticked higher to 9.1%.Hey let's keep these lockdowns and school closures going forever, right? And then let's pass that Universal Basic Income which all of these lockdowns are driving towards. After all, if people can't work -- you have to pay them money to not work, right? And obviously, we'll have to just mandate that renters can live in other people's homes without actually paying rent. Again, if no one's working, and the economy is tanking -- we're going to have to make some little adjustments to how society functions. This may require seizing the property of the kulaks. Or leaving it in their name-only possession, while dictating that they must grant free use of it to Favored Citizens. But we must always think about The Greater Good. And by the way, make sure you donate to all the Karenservatives who are leading the way towards the imposition of full communism on the US. We've never tried Real Communism before, you know. Only the partial communism we have now. Update: Jen Rubin sees the silver lining, though. That seemed so insane to me I thought Anonosaurus was making it up, even though all of his tips are reliable. And what are leisure and hospitality jobs? Often small business jobs. Repeated from my comment on the Morning Report:
The number came in at 33% of consensus. Compare that to the ADP print from a bit earlier. For August, ADP modeled +374k against a consensus of 638k. ADP data came in at about 59% of consensus. So the BLS print is far, far worse than the ADP print. This implies that there was wider damage and lower growth in areas ADP doesn't serve - namely small business, with higher growth in larger sectors. This is also reflected in the initial BLS print. BLS is subject to more revisions as more data come in and make the model better (theoretically, though I reckon there's a lot of manipulation, too), but the two numbers are telling us the same thing: small businesses are stagnating and not adding employees, while large businesses are doing okay but don't need - and can't absorb - everyone that small business *should* be hiring. COVID communism seems an interesting new take on the old model.
In this case they don't want to directly exterminate the "useless eaters" they are going to drown them with entertainment and drugs and shunt them into their very own versions of the matrix where they can just...die in their own time. Guess Pfizer can't let a $1 a dose medication get in the way of thier $500 a dose medication.
Thre next Congress needs to look in to everyone at the FDA/CDC and see if they have a financial interest in these drug companies producing Covid medication and if they are using their power to kill competition. On the Covid front, haven't seen much talk about how Pfizer is going into stage 2/3 studies on an oral Covid medication to take, and how it conveniently lingers up with the propiganda push against Ivermicon (sp?) Guess Pfizer can't let a $1 a dose medication get in the way of thier $500 a dose medication.
There are a few leaked Pfizer national contracts out there re: Covid shot. Basically, there is no way that they can ever be held responsible for any injuries EVER, even if it means changing federal/state/local laws. They also will not allow non-shot alternatives, aka no ivermectin. EVERY nation has gone along with this agreement with Pfizer. So if Pfizer is given blanket immunity to responsibility, why do they need to do trials? All they have to do is say "this will do X in terms of COVID," the world will beat a path to it's door. Pfizer runs the FDA, so why should there even be trials? If something goes wrong, you can't sue Pfizer, can't sue the government, can't sue your employer. They just want you to shut up and die. There is a lot of empirical and theoretical support for the idea of a capital strike. Businesses, especially small ones, are much less likely to invest if the economic climate is uncertain regardless of the interest rate. Small businesses often fail for inadequate cash flow to pay current expenses such as labor or interest on debt so they will be increasingly unlikely for expansion when taxes are anticipated to go up, economic growth is slowing or stopped, and when labor expenses are going up. So, owners of small businesses turn to capital preservation in the face of risks. The large businesses that make capital goods are eventually affected as well because a lot of their revenue may come from small and medium sized businesses. Thus, a spiral downward occurs.
Francois Mitterand elected as the first Socialist President in France's history more or less killed the French economy by causing all three early in his term. Lenin did the same after coming to power. Both eventually had to reverse themselves on economic policy, especially to small businesses because of it. 121. Part of the issue is not what people are getting paid but the fact that people do not want to work when they can get by on what the government is doling out. Hotels and motels probably raised prices (or to be more truthful are charging the rack rate instead of discounting it) because they have a significant fixed cost in their facilities and labor even if no one shows up to rent a room plus the usual franchise fees. Would not be surprised that a lot of these franchised operations are leveraged to the hilt.
Fewer number of customers with a higher fixed cost means higher rates demanded to keep the hotel/motel in biz. Posted by: whig at September 03, 2021 11:44 AM (xunV5) 184

Newsome would lose badly of the election were fair. But when Democrats mail out ballots to everyone under the guise of COVID, then they catch people robbing ballots from mailboxes (with a master key from the Post Office) and toting them around in bulk with a loaded gun, you know this is organized fraud from the top down. There's a reason that no other nation in the OECD allows blind mailing of ballots. We saw why in the last election and we will see it in California. A loss there will stop Democrats in their tracks and probably give Elder a chance to change the senate majority post haste.

Flounder and JEM,
The GWB administration just like his father's were simply unable to adapt foreign policy to changing circumstances. The policy was to placate the Saudis because of the need for Saudi oil which lasted from the Iranian Revolution to the US developing fracking technology. Clinton continued the policy in the interregnum between the two Bushes. We had a similar policy in Venezuela which is why it got so bad so quickly. The aim was cheap oil and if the US could not develop its own, then we should craft US foreign policy toward it. It did not help that the Bush family viewed themselves as oilmen and probably made a buck or two from it. The earlier Bush admin had the same flatfootedness regarding the fall of the Soviet Union. Events in Eastern Europe and inside Russia and the invasion of Kuwait, probably forestalled idiotic policies based on stability. Posted by: whig at September 03, 2021 12:03 PM (xunV5) 331

You can't screen for Down syndrome before about 10 weeks, and something like 80% of Down syndrome fetuses are aborted. If red states ban abortion, we could see a world where they have five times as many children with Down syndrome, and similar numbers for other disabilities. Could be outliers in the whole developed world. There are already negative stereotypes of Americans in these states, one can imagine it getting much more extreme. What if they also ban genetic engineering and embryo selection, while other places go ahead? *receives massive blowback. begins gaslighting* @RichardHanania Sep 2 I didn't even say it was *bad* that people in Red States could create a world where they have 5 times as many people with DS and other diseases. This is what we're dealing with, across the board -- insanity. Mix in malice, power-lust and ignorance. Few appear to understand. They don't want to. Who would? It throws everything off kilter, imposes burdens beyond ordinary reckoning. Posted by: Ordinary American at September 03, 2021 12:14 PM (jA/kV) 401

The economists didn't think of factoring in Kung Flu Freakout into their projections? Right...
I assume these projections are made on good faith using all the socioeconomic daya available and the best tools for projection. Shit Midas had consistently done worse than they imagined. Trump consistently did better. Harris Junta Creepy Pervy Uncle Joe is so far outside margin of error that any claim that they have America's in mind is just as ludicrous as claiming that the 2020 election was fair and open*. The economists certainly low balled forcasts for Joe and ate now downing fifths of gin for their own failure to recognize that Joe was literally inconceivable bad. *Not saying there was "fraud" as there is no reason to even go that far. 371 Oh, and remember those Chinese multi-millionaires and billionaires? Most of them have been disappeared virtually overnight. The rest are on the run.
This actually is somewhat good news. The CCP sure as hell didn't build the modern Chinese economy, it was precisely those people the CCP is now persecuting. That will not help their economy. Posted by: pep at September 03, 2021 12:09 PM (ZsR3z) Indeed. Mao's aim, first thing after taking over, was kill all the rich people (as millions in America so badly want). The result was that the PRC set a world record: the most people plunged into poverty in a record amount of time. I don't think a Cultural Revolution 2.0 would be so bad - for the world. When the PRC did it the first time the country essentially closed up shop for 2-3 years. (Now for the Chinese however, it would suck.) Posted by: Cow Demon at September 03, 2021 12:16 PM (ITrC8) 408

It's the only place in the world I've ever been where, you're zipping down the highway and the speed limit drops, drivers will BRAKE to avoid passing the new speed limit sign at even 2kph over. Not even the most hidebound of Germans would do that. Of course, a lot of my highway driving in Australia was done in Ford Falcon GTs and HSV Commodores, and the Vic state plod periodically has these 'thou shalt not' blitzes where 5kph over is an expensive mortal sin; at the speeds I regarded as normal, if they'd ever caught me I might still be rotting in jail. Regarding China's policies, I suspect that Xi is cracking down to clear the decks from future unrest. Perhaps an anticipation of a global depression or maybe to clear the way to attack Taiwan. Both will seriously harm the Chinese economy.
==== Things must be very bad there for them to consider cultural revolution 2.0. Basically close up the country and let millions starve, only the true believers survive. That's the best case scenario. Don't ask about the worst case scenario. Posted by: the red dragon at September 03, 2021 12:23 PM (T6aYk) 415

Not even the most hidebound of Germans would do that. Having been to Germany recently I have to say that I despised how you could be on a speed-limit free section of the Autobahn and then suddenly enter a speed-limit zone of 130 or even 100 kmph. No warnings given for speed limits as is done in many places in the United States...and the Germans LOVE their traffic cameras. Posted by: Cow Demon at September 03, 2021 12:24 PM (ITrC8) 417

Oh, most of Europe is saturated with radar cameras. I've had some really fun paperwork show up months later from Italy and France. The Germans throw Autobahn speed limits where they think it'll reduce noise levels around congested developments, and most of the Euro countries seem to like to cut speed limits on long downhill stretches. And of course if the enviroloons had their way everyone'd be puttering at 50kph in their golf carts. France has been notorious about cutting speed limits for 'CO2 reduction'.
