Daily Tech News 2 September 2021

Top Story

  • Amazon is trying to block Starlink at the FCC because Amazon sucks, says Starlink. (Ars Technica)

While these statements are self-serving on the part of Starlink, they are nonetheless accurate. Starlink is active now with 100,000 Beta customers and 1700 satellites, where Amazon's competing Kuiper service has yet to launch anything whatsoever.

Amazon has not had a single meeting with the FCC this year about issues raised with its own planned service, but has found time to have fifteen meetings to complain about Starlink.

Tech News

  • Cloudflare has ditched Intel for AMD. (The Register)

Cloudflare runs a lot of servers - not Facebook or Amazon scale, but they act as a gateway for a scary percentage of the web. They evaluated the latest server chips from Intel and AMD and say that while Intel can now compete in performance, they use much more power to do so - several hundred watts more per server.

When you have to budget power for 200 datacenters, it starts to add up.

  • AWS AP-NORTHEAST-1 fell over. (The Register)

That's one of the Amazon datacenters serving minor cities of little global import, like... Tokyo.

I think they need to invest in some Tandem Nonstops.

  • Professor Plum in the EVGA factory with the lead-free solder. (Tom's Hardware)

Amazon's game New World was not directly responsible for killing RTX 3090s, though it does push graphics cards pretty hard. It was dodgy solder work on the initial run of cards from the factory, so if you were lucky enough to get one before the price shot up, karma circled back to pay you a visit.

  • A California judge has ruled that UC Berkeley must conduct an environmental impact study on its own students. (Slate)

Satire is alive and well but has been taken over by the government.

King Cover of the Day

Don't have time for an anime of the day, but this King cover by Gura and Calli from Hololive English is a fun little song. They have very different personalities but they work together really well.

Trying to find something to watch on the service is almost too much of a pain to bother, not to mention 90% of the shit they recommend you have to pay extra for.

18 Good morning, Pixy Misa!

It is only a matter of time before Californians have to wear tags warning people that Californians cause cancer in the state of California.

In my workplace news, everything is migrating to Google aka practically free database. That means our curriculum - including carefully uploaded documents and assessments- was input for years into AtlasRubicon (great name, huh?) Now it's being transferred to Google spreadsheets. "Transferred" meaning copy and paste a few lines before the contract comes up for renewal.

Apple was so pissed off by that (though it wasn't just a MacBook problem, I had a Windows laptop fall victim to it) that they still refuse to work with Nvidia.

That seems to be the best situation for satellite internet. Years back when i switched to DirecTV i asked about thier internet (at the time comcast was our only choice, or slower DSL) and even their sales people told us not to get it, and that it's basically for people who have no other choice.

After a week of tidying up my basement from Henri we flooded worse this time. Felt like a cabin boy trying to bail out a sinking ship as I tried to fill buckets and dump them in the slop sink. We've got a 4 story apartment building in the city, so our only down spout is tied right to our building.

Almost all of our water comes up through the ground though cracks in the cement, I'm hoping there isn't some pipe underneath that maybe broke and is leaking. It had been years since we flooded (didn't flood during Sandy) but now this is the second time in as many weeks. Think it has to do with the dozen 20+ story apartment buildings going up in a 10 block radius, both causing stress on the city's drainage and getting rid of tons of grassy areas and replacing them with concrete, so less area to absorb the rain.

The subway flooding is just normal now, but the street flooding was bad. A friend in Brooklyn posted a picture of the glass door on her basement apartment, it looked like she was completely underwater. It apparently leaked pretty badly but luckily didn't break, though I don't think it'll just drain away, her apartment might be completely ruined.

134 I have talked about the housing idea before.

The Big Govt idea is that middle class home owner are good citizens. So therefore, we must help people get into houses and then the become good citizens. What is missing is that the sacrifice, the saving, the hard work required to make a down payment is a very different mentality than moving into a house and therefore becoming a good citizen.

It is the same idea that college educated people become better citizens.

Notice that both of these ideas are funded by hardworking middle class taxpayers that have worked, saved, struggled, and made their way through life. A Big Government backed loan does not and will not make the debtor a better citizen.

See Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Sallie Mae.

150 It is the same idea that college educated people become better citizens.

Never underestimate the power of Projection. Also, this generation has really lost theory of mind and often fail to grasp that people may have remarkably different life patterns and knowledge.

A common example is when people say "I'm a good person". Of course you are, you are grading your own tests, which completely fails to acknowledge differing value systems that may have better accordance with a transcendent standard.

So it is easy for a person to say: I am a good citizen, therefore if others have the same externalities of a good citizen (e.g. things) then they too will be a good citizen.

Cargo cult mentality.

That's your choice based on your risk assessment, and I'll be damned if i try to stop you. I might make fun of you a little, but stick and stones etc.

Last week I linked to the "areas of Study" at Princeton which is very near me. The numbers of "studies" programs have grown and spread seed. They still have reputable science and engineering schools, but are working on destroying those by watering down subjects like chemistry by adding mandatory classes in "women in chemistry" or "the history of minorities in Chemistry" and "social good and ethical decisions in chemistry". It's pathetic

The universities get huge money for this, and individual profs get special "endowed chairs" for being helpful, plus lavish trips etc. My husband actually went on one, just before the retired (they did not know his plan) which was a 4 week all expense paid junket through the better places in China, it was a Potemkin village thing, that avoided the factories , etc.

178 Why does the CDC not want people to travel this weekend? Do the unions still get to keep their Commie parades?

Fewer people on the roads and in airports. They like the idea of importing millions of people, but they want to keep everyone on the shelf, locked up, hidden away out of sight and out of mind.

That way the parks, museums, shops, roads, air terminals, etc. are less populated with smelly folks.
