We Will Never Win Another Foreign War Again, Because The Left Has Set Us Into Permanent War With Ourselves

Note that a ranking Taliban official was set free by Barack Obama in exchange for American Hero Bowe Bergdahl.

From the New York Post:

When President Barack Obama released five Taliban commanders from the Guantanamo Bay prison in exchange for an American deserter in 2014, he assured a wary public that the dangerous enemy combatants would be transferred to Qatar and kept from causing any trouble in Afghanistan.

In fact, they were left free to engineer Sunday's sacking of Kabul.

Soon after gaining their freedom, some of the notorious Taliban Five pledged to return to fight Americans in Afghanistan and made contacts with active Taliban militants there. But the Obama-Biden administration turned a blind eye to the disturbing intelligence reports, and it wasn’t long before the freed detainees used Qatar as a base to form a regime in exile.

...

Earlier this year, one of them, Khairullah Khairkhwa, actually sat across the table from President Biden's envoy to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, in Moscow, where Khairkhwa was part of the official Taliban delegation that negotiated the final terms of the US withdrawal. The retreat cleared a path for the Taliban to retake power after 20 years.

"I started jihad to remove foreign forces from my country and establish an Islamic government, and jihad will continue until we reach that goal through a political agreement," Khairkhwa said at the summit.

...

The mastermind of the regime change is former detainee Khairkhwa, the Taliban mullah whom Obama released from Gitmo even though the Pentagon classified him as too dangerous to release.

Meanwhile, Noted Foreign Policy Expert Joe Biden, Who Will Restore Our Norms and Bring Respect Back to America, claims the Taliban is having an "existential crisis" about their burning desire for recognition by "the international community."

The left just keeps babbling about "soft power" as they sabotage our hard power:

For those claiming -- like Noted White Rage Theorist Mark Milley -- that there was "no indication" that the Afghan National Army would collapse in a puff of hashish, perhaps they should watch these short clips of US soldiers complaining that the ANA sits on its ass and smokes hash all day -- even when allegedly doing military exercises -- and is too stupid to understand basic commands.

One soldier says that the ANA "troops" he's supposedly working with are not allies, but just useless children he has to "babysit." An Afghan officer says the ANA isn't an army at all, but rather just idiots and "delinquents" who are only in the "army" because they were kicked out of their tribes for "misbehavior."

Here's a 12 second clip that explains it all: Even while the enemy is firing on them, Afghan "soldiers" have to be screamed at by Americans to start even pretending to fire on the enemy.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that top diplomats sent Biden a cable telling him that Afghanistan would collapse quickly, and Fox's Jacqui Heinrich confirms that report:

Jacqui Heinrich
@JacquiHeinrich

NEW, thread: my colleague @RichEdsonDC confirms WSJ reporting, that about two dozen State Dept officials in Kabul sent a memo to Blinken, other top officials July 13th, warning of potential Kabul collapse soon after withdrawal deadline, offering recs on mitigation & speedy evac

The confidential cable constitutes the clearest proof the Biden administration had been warned by its officials the Afghan military may not be able to hold off Taliban takeover - casting questions on POTUS claim

President Biden said to ABC in his ONLY q&a since the Taliban took the country, "The intelligence community did not say back in June or July that this is gonna collapse like it did."

"The source defends the secretary's actions saying it "was immediately brought to the Secretary's attention, and he personally approved the response. We appreciated the thoughts of the drafters, which reflected much of the thinking at the Department and throughout the inter-agency. For example, cable coincided with our launch of Operation Allies Refuge, effort to bring to SIV applicants to the US. We have consistently encouraged constructive use of the channel, which this was, and we conveyed that sentiment in our response."

@RichEdsonDC adds, "Fox has repeatedly reported that the intelligence regarding the situation in Afghanistan was troubling and deteriorating throughout the summer."

Coincidentally, the Special Inspector General examining the mistakes made in the Afghan war just released a report, long in the making, making it clear that the US could never win in Afghanistan, and that this was well known.

The latest report is a critique not so much of the military operations but rather of the premise underlying the war: that U.S. troops could someday leave Afghanistan in a good enough place to thrive as a functioning state.

It concludes that the U.S. presence improved Afghanistan's conditions in medical care, women's health, and the environment, but not so much in any other aspect of life--and that even in the few successful realms, the "prospects for sustaining the progress that was made are dubious."

The U.S. failed in every aspect of its strategy, and often for reasons that are endemic to the way that its bureaucracy functions or to the limits--social, political, and economic--of Afghanistan. The failures were so broad and deep that they raise "questions about the ability of U.S. government agencies to devise, implement, and evaluate reconstruction strategies" in any foreign country. "No single agency had the necessary mindset, expertise, and resources to develop and manage the strategy to rebuild Afghanistan," the report adds--nor were multiple agencies able to divide powers and responsibilities with one another.

In what may be the most damning section of the report, the authors note that rebuilding Afghanistan "required a detailed understanding of the country’s social, economic, and political dynamics" -- yet U.S. policymakers in Washington and field workers on the ground “were consistently operating in the dark.” As a result, they

clumsily forced Western technocratic models onto Afghan economic institutions; trained security forces in advanced weapon systems they could not understand, much less maintain; imposed formal rule of law on a country that addressed 80 to 90 percent of its decisions through informal means.... Without this background knowledge, U.S. officials often empowered powerbrokers who preyed on the population or diverted U.S. assistance away from its intended recipients to enrich and empower themselves and their allies... [Thus,] projects intended to mitigate conflict often exacerbated it, and even inadvertently funded insurgents.

If you want a flamethrower of a piece on this point, read Lee Smith's newest at Tablet.

There is no mystery about why the U.S. experience in Afghanistan ended in failure, embarrassment, and scandal. Nor is it a mystery why the Taliban took over Kabul so quickly. They were fighting for primacy. Their victory was foreordained.

The medieval Arab historian Ibn Khaldun explains the dynamic in his 14th-century masterwork, Al Muqaddima. History, he shows, is a repetition of the same pattern seen throughout the ages--a group of nomadic tribesmen overturn an existing sedentary culture, a civilization that has become weak and luxurious. What drives the success of the rising tribe is its group solidarity, or assabiya. Its awareness of itself as a coherent people with a drive for primacy is frequently augmented by religious ideology. The stronger the tribe's assabiya,, the stronger the group. Assimilating the conquered by imposing its will and worldview on them, the victor lays the foundations of a new civilization. But since, as Ibn Khaldun writes, "the goal of civilization is sedentary culture and luxury," all groups carry the seeds of their own demise.

And so the struggle begins anew.

...

Ibn Khaldun's most important contribution to political theory was to show that assabiya is the engine of history. With it, the most primitive tribe can overturn the mightiest of civilizations; without it, a people will wither in the desert.

That's just to set the table -- because Smith goes on to argue forcefully that the United States no longer has any assabiya due to the left's very successful campaign to set the US at war at itself for all eternity, just because they know they can win elections by constantly ginning up hatred among their constituents for the real Enemy: The White Middle Class.

For our elite, the fall began during the tail end of the Bill Clinton presidency when Democratic Party strategists augured that they'd soon have a permanent hold on power thanks to urban intellectuals, young single women, racial and ethnic majorities, and the LGBT community. What is described as a coalition is in fact a mélange of clients with varying and sometimes opposing interests that can only be held together by stoking a communal hatred of the national majority--the white middle class.

It was hardly a coincidence that this demographic was the source of the wealth that the establishment was busy transferring to themselves and abroad, through initiatives like the North American Free Trade Agreement. The elites rationalized their impoverishment of the white middle class by claiming that they were dying anyway. And when the American heartland didn’t die off quickly enough, the establishment credentialed themselves as progressives by calling the people who live there racists. Being racists, they deserved all the bad things the elite had decided for them. Thus, by betting on sectarianism as the path to permanent power, American elites polarized the United States.

The elite institutions that weren't already part of the left establishment, like entertainment, the academy, the media, and the foreign policy and national security bureaucracy, were co-opted through party initiatives--as, for instance, the Beltway think tank Center for a New American Security vetted the rising ranks of U.S. military officers.

By fomenting constant internal war, the Marxists have guaranteed that the US will no longer intervene against their foreign allies. They have insured that we can never win a war, and that we know that we can never win a foreign war.

America is depressed. Divided. Dispirited.

Another word for that -- demoralized.

Precisely what the Soviet Union and the KGB spent 85% of its "time, manpower, and effort" on.

Not intelligence. Not assassinations.

But simply subverting the United States and setting it at war with itself:

16 The Dems have essentially reinforced a critical problem:

-the Dems to do not feel bound by any obligation to allies or friends with regards to military support.

If the entire foreign policy momentum can be changed by a single election (which it can, it always has been an issue- just one we have managed to avoid the worst of because the 'right' person won) then essentially we will always be an untrustworthy ally.

This means we are probably not a good person to get in cahoots with.

This has been true for some time. The Democrats will undermine and cripple a war effort when a Republican is power, and incompetently fuck it up when they're in charge. It has been this way for decades. The underlying purpose is to keep America from being victorious while they subvert her at home.

25 Yeah, I can't muster much upset at the left over our lack of ability to win wars. The right is no good on this either. Afghanistan is a land of savages and the only way to be successful there would be a war of extermination. Virtually no one is going to sign on to that kind of war. We should just admit that we don't have what it takes, and nothing short of an existential war will produce a different result.

65 all of the division and dispiritedness and corruption and incompetence is downstream of culture

our enemies understand this

but I would argue (and I know this is a fringe view) that culture is down stream of monetary policy

money (and the associated price discovery) is the barometer for how we-as individuals and communities-make decisions on how to allocate our scarce time and capital

corrupting/debasing the money distorts our incentives and leads to bad behavior in all aspects of life (moral hazard, misallocation of capital, a deemphasis on saving)

67 48 Now they are horrified and filled with terror over Biden. They are suddenly naked and afraid. The only major European countries with actual armed forces are Britain and France. The rest of them might - maybe, in Eastern Europe - be able to handle localized defense of the homeland. No one else can project force, no one else can try to meet an enemy head on. Europe is a mouse baring its chest to the eagles, and now they finally know it.

I still get no comfort from that.

It's hard to *teach* about liberty. You have to live it and instill it at all times from early childhood. We used to do that here. We don't. And if we don't do it here, you can be damn sure we're not trying to do it elsewhere.

The people in charge of our institutions don't even want it. They hate the idea of liberty. They want command and control, and use wokeism to get it (now, anyway - though they've been building toward wokeism for generations). And that is what they taught. But it doesn't hold up to the Taliban, who don't care about mean tweets and just kill you if you're in the way. They're barbarians, and a system to denigrate and weaken advanced societies is not very portable to the barbarian societies.

There have also already been security incidents with Afghans, especially with female service members. The first groups out of HKIA were not vetted AT ALL. There is no way to vet most of these people AT ALL. There is no more national government or database to vet anyone from. The military has issued 100gr subsonic 5.56 for tower guards, usually for whacking dogs, but I can't imagine the limited range and power of that would suffice to deal with any moderately serious intrusion.

If they're just running full power ammo through cans, everyone within a few hundred yards is going to know someone is shooting, though probably not where they're shooting.

I was thinking about that just this morning. There are examples of taking a big hit now, which were catastrophic at the time, but actually set up the later win (or at least recovery), not that that's the actual plan. Stalingrad would be an obvious example. In our own experience, it took going through a number of bloodbath losses before Lincoln had run through the list of bad generals, found them wanting, and decided to take a chance on Grant.

At least three generations accepted the subordination of the Citizen to the State - in order to "beat the Reds". The only way a Free People survives such a thing is to treat such an act as a necessary evil - and undo everything at the first possible moment.

We did not. We enshrined all those hard power institutions, reveling in the patriotism of it all, and they promptly turned against us as soon as they needed a new enemy to justify their existence.

We embraced Empire to hold back the Soviets. Empires don't typically feature a free citizenry.

How pathetic is it that Biden, the so-called president, is so cognitively fragile that he can't manage to sit through two meetings in the same day? Just too taxing for his poor, shriveled, aged, damaged brain.

220 I don't know if you saw on JJ's thread today, but it came out this morning that the leading publisher of neo-Nazi and Satanic books is an FBI asset.

Neither is surprising really - the government spends a lot of its time creating a neo-nazi threat to then argue it needs more resources to fight the neo-nazi threat.

And on the latter, a large portion of the left is now Satan-curious...But remember, as they noted in Slate, joining the Church of Satan doesn't really mean you are worshiping him. I mean, would a priest of Satan lie to you about something like that?

The one bright thing that one can reflect on is that the Taliban won't rule them either. Just a few parts, the rest being in various states of resistance or pseudo-cooperation. No one rules that place. (But, contra the CW, they can be beaten. You just don't stay. Like Genghis, you just kick ass, kill a bunch, and move on to someplace worth ruling.)

263 One major cultural thing is a problem for all of the Mideast.

There is a pronounced attitude of "InShallah" Or as God wills.

Meaning that everything is ordained by God. That nothing happens without God's intervention or action so acting against what is considered to be inevitable is blasphemy and could actually bring God's wrath down on those who are fighting back.

This leads to a lot of problems in small ways, such as with maintenance, planning, stopping an attempt at doing something when evidence shows it will fail until a better time.

And this is why so many of the earliest tribes to embrace Islam are so poor and live in the manner that they do. It's God's will.

Sadly this can be found in many other fundamentalist religions.

Provided that our side wins the internal war decisively and completely, removing the leftist from power and preventing them from ever having any say over foreign policy implemented for the interests of America alone.

If we don't, then it hardly matters, and is probably better for the world that our current idiots in charge have as little influence over the world as possible. I find myself curiously apathetic to the easily predictable failure of this regime.

The rest of them might - maybe, in Eastern Europe - be able to handle localized defense of the homeland. No one else can project force, no one else can try to meet an enemy head on. Europe is a mouse baring its chest to the eagles, and now they finally know it.

I remember reading an article in a Brit newspaper during one of the gulf wars. The Brits were having trouble arming their own troops with guns and ammo. Looking at the comments was stunning to me. Instead of blaming their own gov't for the failure, they were bitching about America not giving them this equipment for a war America started.

Saw that a couple days back - dementia is rarely a quickly developing and fast process. It can last a decade or more. I have no doubt that he was diagnosed as potentially showing signs of developing the disease. There's no way after 2 brain aneurisms that he'd not be seeing a neurologist or five on a regular basis. I also have little doubt he's undergone at least a few cognitive tests before even running for POTUS. They knew exactly what they were placing in office. As I keep saying - what could be more demoralizing to real patriots than a senile commander in chief?

443 This has been well known for a long time, by anybody that has been to Afghanistan or had friends that went there.

I was never deployed to Afghanistan myself, only Iraq, but I had plenty of friends and peers that went, and they universally said the same things: That the Afghan army was an absolute joke and they were NEVER going to survive without us.

Key points that they all said:
1) The Afghan government and military leadership was utterly corrupt and utterly incompetent.
2) The US leadership WAS AWARE that they were utterly corrupt and incompetent
3) The US frontliners WERE NOT ALLOWED to hold ANY Afghan accountable for corruption and incompetence, and instead the US frontliners were told to DO THEIR JOBS FOR THEM to cover up their corruption and incompetence

What a shock that it spiraled out of control the second we left.

454 Good post but I don't buy the reach to explain A'stan with this macro universal idea of demoralization.

There was a reason we started it all with 12 guys on donkeys, with sat phones, and air support. And it wasn't because there weren't other options. Lots of specific turns and decisions that occurred after that good start, none of them having anything to do with internal division.

The IG reports on A'stan have been scorchers for ..... a decade or more? But they have always been met with a harumph and general silence.

None of the individual themes there are wrong (except the idea that the KGB thought up or could be responsible for behavior by Americans, which is stupid), but they don't tie together in any meaningful way. And the trade and economic issues are far more complicated, and less cartoonishly the sole product of conniving to kill off the "white middle class", than is asserted.

458 I'm reading the FDA Pfizer approval letter, and it reads to me as only an extension of the EUA for the Pfizer vaccine. The statute that is cited is Section 564 of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic act (which has to do with EUAs), and Section III (Conditions of Authorization) also cites to Section 564.

The letter is obtusely written, given that it concerns BOTH the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID 19 Vaccine (which is given an EUA) and the COMIRNATY (COVID-19 Vaccine). With respect to the COMIRNATY vaccine, the letter notes that today the FDA "approved the biologics license application", but then, directly below, notes that the FDA is issuing an EUA for COMIRNATY for "certain uses that are not included in the approved BLA".

This looks like a shell game to me, so that this can be massaged as a full FDA approval, when it really isn't.
