Kabul '75: Video Shows Terrified Afghan Civilians Clinging Desperately to Departing US Jets, Then Plunging To Their Deaths as Their Grips Give Out

BTW, I have several Kabul-related posts. One is about Biden Hidin' again. I'll post that soon. There are enough stories here that multiple posts are warranted.

Kabul fell in one single day.

Is that correct, though? For a city to "fall," it must actually attempt to resist the barbarians at the gates, right?

Instead, Kabul just surrendered to the Taliban, in a deal that seems to have been made weeks ago.

Taliban fighters took control of Kabul on Sunday as the Afghan government collapsed, President Ashraf Ghani fled, and the long-dominant American presence appeared to be coming to an abrupt and chaotic end after nearly 20 years, with tens of thousands of people trying to escape.

The takeover of the sprawling capital city had been years in the making, but was ultimately accomplished in a single day. Insurgent fighters, fresh off their conquests in each of Afghanistan's provincial hubs, faced little to no resistance as they entered the city Sunday morning.

By evening, the Taliban were giving television interviews in the presidential palace, just hours after Ghani had departed Afghanistan. And the Pentagon was speeding an additional 1,000 troops to Kabul's airport to assist with the withdrawal of U.S. personnel after the American flag was lowered from the embassy.

Below: some of those "tens of thousands" of people fleeing the Taliban pitifully clutch the sides of US jets even as they're taking off in an effort to escape their future murderers.

A major theme of conservative reportage: Despite Biden's lies, everyone knew this would happen, and happen this quickly, too.

Posobiec published this text message from a military officer in the region, saying that the intelligence predicted that exactly this would happen, and that Biden was therefore straight-up lying to the country for the past few months.

This is not the result of Trump's withdrawal plan. They made that *very* clear earlier on. Kamala made hay over her input to the strategy. They went out of their way, time and again, to point out that this wasn't Trump's faulty strategy but their new, professional, effective strategy formed by the adults in the room.

Assuming no hostage situation and spike in terrorism, my guess is that most Americans will shrug over foreign policy disasters. But, it will definitely hurt the military, intel, and the national security leadership in their reputation and future earnings working for defense contractors.

The coming spike though of inflation coupled with open borders, crime, and shortages of all sorts of products is the thing that brings down governments.

The Commanders failed to do what needed to be done. If there is any frailure by the intel professionals (particularly at the senior levels) then it was not in falling on their swords over the information that this would happen.
I was taught as a young lieutenant that there will come a time in my career that I had to "bet my bars" as the saying went. That means laying it out for the boss and making a stand on the data. This was a bet your bars time for a lot of folks. They had the information, but the commanders didn't listen.

Sure. But the local display has to have its offset programmed. The atomic clocks run in UTC. It's probably likely that this was a prior photo dredged up for publication, but it's possible that an infrequently-used remote situation room got missed when resetting clock offsets.

I think it's possible. Or one of the other Asian countries that doesn't have (or didn't have) nukes. Korea and Japan could make them easily, they just haven't chosen to. I'm not sure what Taiwan's capability is in that regard. But I have to think that Taiwan and Korea had crash nuke programs underway by mid-November of last year. They're probably getting close to their weapons being available now. Delivery is - as it always is - difficult, but at worst you can load the fucker into a jet liner and crash it where it needs to be.

Taiwan during the 1980's and 90's, along with South Africa, and perhaps some others like Korea and Japan collaborated with Israelis with know how to determine what was needed for nuclear weapons. The South Africans actually detonated one and were acknowledged to have several functional weapons that were dismantled after apartheid ended.

Taiwan has the engineering expertise to create nukes on short order plus the raw materials running four nuclear power plants to make them probably in a matter of weeks. Japan and SK, ditto. The major issue would be making them into warheads that could be delivered via missiles or the reliance on cruder bombs requiring aircraft for delivery.

Hence, while being interviewed Biden jumps to, "there's gong to be no circumstances where you see people being lifted off of the roof of a United States embassy."

Yep. Most of them are kept disassembled, partly for security reasons, but also because the components degrade with time (tritium especially). Also to ensure that radiation doesn't damage the electronics and other parts.

From my understanding, the China approach is similar to that of Germany in the 30's except using missiles instead of aircraft. The idea is that massive bombardment across Taiwan via missiles will cause the Taiwanese to sue for peace and allow an uncontested occupation to go forward. Don't think that China would try a direct contested invasion that would make DDay look like child's play. The problem for the Chinese is that their Hong Kong show example of leaving the Taiwanese to run themselves went awry with China assuming direct control just before Covid hit so it destroyed the illusion that Taiwanese could go about their business and only accept theoretical Chinese oversight.

My guess is that once the arrangement was made to leave by Trump Humpty Dumpty was not going back together. Foolishly, though, they broke the deal and did not evacuate, not figuring that everyone in the country knew that we weren't staying around and decided to make their own adjustments to reality.
