Scandal: Mike Pompeo’s Missing Whiskey Bottle;
Not A Scandal: Wall Street paying Janet Yellen $7 Million For Zoom Speeches

Compare these two stories and guess which one our political/media class finds scandalous.

Janet Yellen made millions in Wall Street, corporate speeches (Politico – Jan 2021)

Yellen, the former chair of the Federal Reserve, brought in nearly $1 million giving nine speeches to Citi alone.

$5,800 Whiskey Bottle, a Gift From Japan to Pompeo, Is Missing, U.S. Says; The State Department is investigating (NY Times – Aug 2021)

Under the Constitution, it is illegal for an American official to accept a gift from a foreign government, and gifts are considered property of the U.S. government. The founders included the measure to stop foreign governments from gaining undue influence over American officials. Any officials caught accepting such gifts can face civil penalties, or impeachment if they are still in office.

Trump’s Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was given an expensive bottle of whiskey by the Japanese government. It is now missing, and the NY Times is all over this constitutional crisis. But when Wall Street shoveled millions of dollars at the person expected to be the next Treasury Secretary? Shrug.

By the way - if we’re talking about “undue influence of American officials” might this be a good time to ask just why Wall Street repeatedly paid Janet Yellen exorbitant amounts of money for speeches after her departure as head of the Federal Reserve but before her appointment as Treasury Secretary?

From the moment Trump did not renew her in 2018, it was almost a foregone conclusion that she would be the Treasury Secretary if Trump were voted out of office. By Summer of 2020,
Yellen was already providing economic briefings to Joe Biden.

Citibank kept pumping money to Yellen all the way into October of 2020. And by the way, do you know the form of those speeches? They were Zoom calls. Ms. Yellen got on Zoom from her home or office, spoke briefly, and cashed a five or six-figure check for her “efforts.” She must really give great Zoom speeches if Wall Street kept coming back time and again for more of her wisdom.

Yellen - 1.JPG

Yellen - 2.JPG

These are some of the fees she received after she started advising the Biden campaign:

CITADEL: Three Zoom speeches in October 2020 totaling $337,500

CITI: $54,000 on 10/14/2020

DELOITTE: $67,500 on 11/20/2020, which was after the election.

DAIWA SECURITIES: $72,000 on 11/05/2020, which was after the election

Just why did Wall Street throw all this money at Yellen? Mark Hemingway is exactly right. These “speaking fees” were pre-payment for favors to be named later.

Yellen - 3.JPG

It is transparently corrupt. But it’s corruption being committed by the approved team, so no one cares.

24 Citadel had to pay for waiting. They had to load it all up into October and so had to pay more at the end. Foolish. They should have known better.

But this does make me wonder about something. Most of the big banks had big one-time payoffs (like City National - half a million over four days in January of '19) or slow drips (Citi). Citadel is interesting. They did a big payoff complex like City National, but right before the election. No lead time, no burn-in, nothing. This, if I wear my tinfoil, makes me suspect that Citadel learned about the steal later than most, and had to make up for lost time.

Good post, Buck. Thanks.

I have tried many creme cheese copies over the years, and most cooks will tell you that nothing compares to Philadelphia. I don't know why, but all others suck.

Luxe. It is great raw, and I just had a piece of cheesecake made from it. Finally, someone rounded the edge on that philly brand market cornering.

I'm not much of an Irish Whiskey person, but agree on the Japanese stuff. The one I had was exceedingly light, and didn't have that singular flavor I was looking for. Almost seemed like a blended blend and homogenized. No doubt, a lot of the value of that bottle was due to its rarity. Give me a bottle of good Kentucky bourbon any day.

122 Japanese whisky is basically scotch, that is the style they make. They have some indigenous barrels that are obscenely expensive. The Hibiki Harmony gives you are chance to try one.

But also Japanese whiskies are way overpriced, certainly on the high end What are they implying Pompeo drank the thing. Btw, if he did drink it, would that be illegal? At what point are these gifts just stupid things to put in museums or gifts that no one enjoyed? To be honest, it would be pretty cool to check out that museum. Does the Smithsonian cover that?

I know the much hated by one Nixon had to drink tons of Chinese Baiju, a truly awful spirit. If he drinks it is that ok? No way it cost that much but you could see that with the French.

124 >>When the Clintons vacated the WH, there were reports of lots of things missing. But, a non-story.

I remember when they loaded up a lot of the WH furniture that had been donated by various American craftsmen. NOT gifts to the Clintons -- to the WH. That was a big story, because it happened in the final months of the Clinton presidency, along with the big push to pardon a ton of people, Bill initially leasing a post-presidential office space in the most expensive are of NYC (paid by taxpayers), and also newly-elected Senator Hillary buying herself a huge Kalorama mansion w/her book advance. Worse, she then throwing herself a big house-warming oarty where she registered for all sorts of expensive furniture, etc. so that *other people* could furnish her mansion -- just weeks before she was sworn in and would have had to report these generous gufts.

These were all DC scandals and people did care at the time because DC was sick of the Clinton Grift-and-Scandal show and could not say buh-bye soon enough.

125 Revolutionary leaders and terrorists tend to be from that class. Here in the US too. Most other people don't have the time or resources to worry about regime change unless they're starving.
__________

Yes but Obama insisted after 9/11, and still does to this day, that islamic terrorism has nothing to do with islamic theology. The only reason muslims become terrorists is because they are forced to live in ignorance and poverty -- with the implication that the greedy white people in the west, and especially in Amerikkka, are the cause of muslims' ignorance and poverty, of course.

This is why we need to send more American dollars to those countries, and why we should import millions more muslims here each year, and why we must devote ourselves to promoting muslim self-esteem projects (like NASA) and why the best thing we could do for the middle east is start a jobs program there. Because it's just ignorance and poverty that cause islamic terrorism, not islamic theology.

It's total bullshit. Islamic terrorism is absolutely caused by islamic theology. Directly caused by it. And half of the U.S. has been denying this obvious fact for decades.

135 So I dated a girl once - a trust fundie. She had a bottle of hooch - i think it was a brandy. It was in a bottle made by an expensive glass company and the bottle was worth thousands empty.

Well, her previous BF was a fundie, and a drunk, and he did not have a corkscrew so he smashed the bottle against a table to open, breaking off the neck. She was heartbroken because the thing was a gift from her dear dead grannie or something, so she had the bottom half made into a glass.

Anyway, I told her that that is what addicts do - they show disdain for the thing they are addicted to. I was taught that lesson by a roomate when his dealer came over one time to party, and he was tossing coke around like it was chex mix. Roomate said that addicts have to show they still have power over the drug which is now controlling their lives. Rang true. Thought I would share that with you all today.

The clip was so famous he created a Iimoncello brand. I have made it a few times but nothing comes close to the stuff you can get in Southern Italy on the side of the road. The reason is we simply don't have those kinds of lemons. THey have lemons twice the size we have and with a much larger zest. And as we know, Limoncello is all about the zest, the pulp and juice plays no part.

LOL, Never seen it, I'll look for the clip.

Growing up in a guinea family, a lot of older relatives made their own. Kept it in jars, like Italian moonshine. Which it kind of is, really. Some of my cousins still make it. Not me, I'll drink mine out of a bottle from the liquor store.

I did make dandelion wine one year like the old folks in my fam used to. It turned out VERY good, I was quite impressed with myself. Lots of work though.

Why in hell is Stupid Joe, State, and DHS futzing around with all this paperwork crap? Put the Afghans on planes to any US airport. When they get to the Immigration checkpoint, they simply request asylum in the US to escape violence in their native country. Bingo - in they come, into DHS custody.

If it works all day every day on the Mexican border for Guatemalans, why can't it work for the Afghanis at the Atlanta airport?

This will also reduce total costs for getting them over to and into the US. We have waterheads running every part of the Executive Branch.

It's Ashoura now, one of the biggest of the 387 Shi'a holidays, and a Talib sitting down with Hazara is a kinda big deal, at least symbolically.

Taliban making all kinds of specific commitments on non-barbarism these days. Time will tell, but Taliban 1.0 didn't even bother with lip service to civilized norms.

304 That Marvel Shang Chi movie in the sidebar smells of failure.

One, I had/have ZERO idea of who that guy is. Is he a Marvel biggie? Or, some 4th tier shmoe who's getting a movie for SJW brownie points?

Two, the trailer itself is bo-o-o-o-r-r-r-ring and that supposed to contain the best stuff to get you excited.

Three, jeepers guys! I hate my Dad. He's an asshole. Yep, looks like another e-e-e-e-evil Dad has messed up junior's life. Is that the sort of movie you'd want to take your kids to...the lame-ass one with the Dad's Suck message.

Four, is Shang Chi's Magic, Magic Covid? Cuz he's Chinese right? I'm pretty sure his magic is COVID. No? Well, okay. Maybe they can change his name to Takafumi Ken. No one knows this character anyway and the Japanese angle gets you those sweet sweet Olympic Games good feelings!!!!

I predict box office nothingness and failure promoted upward.

305 James, I'm confident that exactly such plans (use Bagram as evacuation staging and exit point) have existed since .... well, since we got Bagram years ago. And I'm specifically confident that plans such as you describe are there, freshly updated, on the shelf. The abandonment of Bagram, except by the last US forces to leave the country, seems incomprehensible and indefensible. Though I'd love to hear considerations that make it less so.

Back in 1995 I was in SF at the stereophile show, and wandered into a crappy little liquor store. I saw a bottle of Wild Turkey - what we used to call lead top. Before the French bought it, and it turned briefly into old number 8 brand, it was just plain old 8 years old. And it makes their Rare Bird taste like paint thinner. For a 101 bourbon, it's pretty complex and not sweet, and I'd love to compare it to some of the better small batch bourbons that have come out since then. Last time I tasted any was 20 years ago. Regular bird has gotten progressively worse over the years, I can't really tolerate it any longer.

The thing about biden, and being a senator, is that you do not have to decide or do anything. you flash a smile and lie. You are NEVER responsible for decisions or judgments. This is why senators make terrible executives. Same with salesmen and CEOs

326 vivi there are many "journalists" still there - the Taliban press conference today in Kabul looked like a conventional event, lots of int'l presence and cameras.

Time will tell, but the Talib are making a big effort to avoid chaos and assure many that they are working to restabilize things quickly. Besides, Taliban 1.0 had int'l press around, they were pretty rough-edged but still allowed basic int'l media activity. This crew is doing their imitation of aspiring members of the int'l community.

Some aren't taking chances, but some are, that they mean it, for now, and can deliver.

Sort of related, many districts of Kabul reporting (via individuals on the twatters) that daily life resuming there.

Some legislators had previous real lives of accomplishment in some area, many not. But Biden is an archetypical nothing, who's never had a real job or any accomplishments of any sort, before becoming a (also unaccomplished, lazy, incompetent) life-time seat warmer in the Senate. Obama was the same, but of course only had a few months in the Senate before, absurdly, becoming president.

I mean, no one could have thought that the US coming out of Afghanistan after 20 years was going to be a garden of roses. I don't think had Trump's withdrawal gone to plan that everything would be awesome, and surely he would have drawn criticism.

But these Biden people are so impressed with themselves. And they figured they could shrug off any criticism because the media is totally in the tank. There were and are plans, and they just blew them off.

As for the marketing complaints re racism, I've been linking videos here for about the last 2-3 months and I keep coming across his trailer (I skip it, because Big Yawn).

I think this is manufactured outrage to mask a tanking movie. I think they had Brie Larson and Scarlett Johansson say something outrageous to buff up attention for the movie because they already knew it sucked, and I think this is more of the same. From now on, when stars create drama before their movie rolls out, I am going to assume it sucks and take a pass.

I have two close relatives who work in the ICUs. And they are seeing more concerning deaths with the Delta variant lately.
More young people are getting it. With death among the unvaccinated or severe damage to the lungs leading to transplants.

Remember they work in the ICUs, so see the worst cases.
Anyway, if you you get something that might be covid and are in the age range or have comorbidities or think you might have the delta variant, you might want to consider heading for the Doc and see what he says. Esp if you're unvaccinated.
YMMV.

It was given to some staffer as Mike didn't meet with the Japanese official for a few days, and then immediately left the country. They are trying thier hardest to connect this thing to Pompeo because they don't want to report on real stories, and real corruption.
