Oregon Governor Ends Requirement of Competency in Math as Well as Basic Literacy for the Sake of "Equity;"
San Jose State University to Create Standards-and-Achievements-Agnostic Non-"Honors" For Equity As Well
As you probably know, "equality" is now Officially Racist.
Equality is starting everyone off on the same line as a race and seeing who's fastest. "Equity" is starting everyone off on different lines -- the fastest further from the finish line, the slowest the closest to it -- in order to pretend that "everyone's the same speed, yay!" Because blacks and Hispanics lag in achievement in math and reading, we'll just have to do away with any standards in math and reading. If schools won't be teaching math and literacy any longer, then it's time to fire these f***ers. We'll teach them at home. But the teachers will not be collecting money from us any longer.
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown Signs Law Removing Basic Literacy and Math Skill Requirement for High School Graduates Standards dropped to accommodate "Oregon's Black, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color." No, this is not the Bee. Oregon has decided that basic literacy and basic maths competency are not only unworthy goals of K-12 public education but that they shouldn't even be a requirement to "ear"” (really, at this point, just be granted) a high school diploma. Because 'equity.' ...
Oregon Live reports: For the next five years, an Oregon high school diploma will be no guarantee that the student who earned it can read, write or do math at a high school level. Gov. Kate Brown had demurred earlier this summer regarding whether she supported the plan passed by the Legislature to drop the requirement that students demonstrate they have achieved those essential skills. But on July 14, the governor signed Senate Bill 744 into law. Through a spokesperson, the governor declined again Friday to comment on the law and why she supported suspending the proficiency requirements. Brown's decision was not public until recently, because her office did not hold a signing ceremony or issue a press release and the fact that the governor signed the bill was not entered into the legislative database until July 29, a departure from the normal practice of updating the public database the same day a bill is signed.
Meanwhile, I guess because academic honors are not distributed perfectly according to the desires of racist bean-counters, San Jose State will create a fake, condescending non-honors program for those who can't achieve academic honors.

San Jose State University is working to launch what has been temporarily dubbed the "(un) Honors College" as scholars work to design a model that best fits their vision. The effort aims to attract the "region's BIPOC communities," stated Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Vincent Del Casino when he announced the undertaking last September. BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, People of Color. The large public university nestled in California’s Silicon Valley already offers various traditional honors programs. The new program would not replace them, Del Casino stated, but instead push "past historical conversations about honors education and toward a dialogue about how we create radical, new learning spaces responsive to and inspired by the complex and intersectional diversity of our local communities and our students." "Maybe what we end up with doesn't have the word 'honors' in it at all." The underpinning idea is that the (Un) Honors College would not consist of traditional high-GPA students, but rather "marginalized populations," said professors who are developing the program in a task force presentation in May 2021 posted on YouTube.

That said, how in the name of MLK Jr's saggy nutsack does removing the math and literacy graduation requirement achieve "equity" as described? That's more akin to removing the finish line completely. Not only are the starting lines adjusted, you don't even have to run.

Adjusting the starting lines became too much of a hassle because as they rewarded poor performance there was more poor performance strangely enough.

I don't know how, but if you investigate this I am sure there is some funding issue around graduation rates. Maybe bonuses depend on it or something.

Most of the low income kids bounce in and out of different households, going from their Aunt's, to their Grandmother's, to their Mom's, etc. This is because their parents are bouncing in and out of jail, rehab, homeless shelters, and being evicted out of different apartments for various reasons.
Their parents think nothing of pulling them from school for months at a time to watch their younger siblings when needed.
When they are actually in school, they don't care about their education because nobody in their lives holds them accountable for their education.

The whole ESL fiasco that is CA was driven by the unions. Forcing spanish language instruction means more teachers. It also means more failing students, so you need more special intervention and more and more teachers.
It is a crisis by design, to increase teacher rolls and salaries. And then the next step is to hide what a failure it is. This is why they hated Bush's testing requirements (NCLB.) And I think this is why they hate graduation rate reporting.

Are teachers even allowed to give non-passing grades any longer? I remember vividly some kids who either got held back, or literally couldn't graduate high school. I also remembered having a C- (MINUS!) on my report card. Luckily it wasn't as bad as I had imagined in my fantasy - but that was enough motivation all by itself.

There needs to be a mass exodus from public schools. Enough people are enraged with them that some kind of alternative arrangement can be made (different from home schooling, which is great for those who can do it).

As far as I know, that's still the case. Citizens here are forced to learn Spanish, but the illegals or lazy kids? Not at all. I've heard Spanish in classrooms. In my town it's surprising to hear English, and I take notice if I see an Hispanic family speaking English with their kids. My old neighbor behind me came from Taiwan. English was an obvious second language. They absolutely would not allow their kids to speak Chinese when in the presence of guests, and used English most of the time when they were by themselves. Most Chinese I heard was when they were reading the kids the riot act. No doubt, they're now studying engineering and will graduate top of their class.

The Gist is that EVERY CA school was #1. They would bend over backwards to rank EVERY CA school as best in the core subjects. They did this by ranking classes not grades. Ranking based on various metrics. Ranking based on manipulated numbers. So if you picked any school, you could find it was the best school in the region for some important discipline.
It really was impressive how f-ing hard they worked to hide the reality that they all sucked, but the kids over in Cupertino were running rings around the kids in San Jose.
This is all a scam. We are reading the labels off the snake oil the teacher union has been selling for decades, and now these poor souls are standing in front of the hand picked school board telling them that they are selling snake oil and it is making them sick. The board knows it is all a scam - that's what they do.

Depends on the individual school system. When I was in 7th grade, I was in a similar program which was pretty damned challenging. Lots of science stuff.
We moved to another district just before 8th grade and I went into that district's program, which was totally different. Basically it was "get the smart kids warehoused separately and have them screw off make 8mm short films so that they don't cause trouble in the other classes".
Yeah, we did a LOT of stupid action films, and didn't learn diddly squat.

That's exactly how it works. Hard to believe we had the best schools in the USA 50 years ago. Standardized Testing & Reporting was replaced by CAASPP which is far, far worse. The new standard focuses on problem solving, analytical thinking and communication skills. You can see where this one is going. Waaaay open to interpretation for each district/school. Think they introduced it sometime during Obama's 2nd to much fanfare.

I have run into this a lot too. I think even good teachers are brainwashed by their surroundings and the unions to hate comparative testing of students. They have tons of reasons, but it comes down to the fact that testing is the best metric of how good the teacher is doing.

If memory serves, it had to do with land snatching in the Oklahoma Territory. Just before the big Oklahoma Land Race, you could claim to be part Cherokee and get a head start. And the Cherokee actually had tribal records where you could get your name inserted, so you'd have the documentation to back it up.
When the Fauxahontas thing was first hitting the airwaves about 12 years ago, CSPAN had an author on who had written a book about all of the Cherokee/Oklahoma shenanigans. Totally coincidental, I'm sure.

This is bullshit.
Seventh grade teachers are being saddled with illegal kids that come into the classroom with second grade reading skills. If the teacher does amazing work with the kid, and brings them up to fourth grade reading skills, the testing still says the teacher failed.
If the testing actually took a proper baseline and checked the kid against that, you'd find a shit-ton less resistance to it.

You've always been able to virtue signal Left-wing beliefs for huge amounts of extra credit, as long as I was in school. It would get you at least a B even if you practically never attended class or turned in work. Most kids figured that out.

Just reading some shit. The only "NPI" (non-pharmaceutical interventions) that may actually show some slight efficacy in lowering infection rates is hand washing.
Masks, social distancing, lockdowns are all demonstrably worthless. Regular handwashing might show some real, but small, effect.

SJSU is my local commuter school. It truly helped build Silicon Valley. My husband now knows not to hire someone from SJSU (he already wasn't too impressed, but was warming up to it.). Now he knows.

Eh, I barely know one end of a hammer from the other. Part of it is, as a society we're richer than back in the olden days. I don't need to know how to change my oil because it costs $10-15 in labor for someone else to do it for me and I can easily afford that $10-15. There's no incentive to know how to do things because it's relatively cheap to hire someone else to do it for you.

Been saying for awhile now that mankind has peaked. When I was in high school dudes knew shit, mechanical shit. We knew how to fix cars, things around the house, etc. Today, most people don't know shit. I see it in the shop when customers bring in bikes they attempt to fix themselves, and common sense seems to be on vacation. They do stooopid shit as if they grew up in a cave and know nothing about anything.

Ever so ^^^^this^^^^. As a kid, i learned how to fix damned near evertyhing we owned. In highschool i took an aprenticeship job at the Marriott to become an AC/Boiler certified mechanic. In the Army, i learned electonics, and repair of nukes, then radars and missiles. In my current job, i fix everything from bad modeling and simulation code, to reverse engineering competitor's technology for setting the price for proposals. I contiuously get looks af dumbfounded amazeballs from other engineers when i do hard shit overnight.

I worked a position for 8 years, and caused an international incident with the French over the analysis for booster drop zones for the 2-stage missile GWB was gonna out in Poland for CONIS defense. Got zero top cover from MDA, or my supervisor, so i took a job a corporate for 3.5 years. That MDA contract fucking begged me me to come back, offered me my D.C. salary to live in Huntsville, AL and paid me about $60k in household move bennies. I ruled that fucking place with a crowbar in the analysis department for another 8 years before being asked to do what I'm doing now.

Where this story ends up is with a bunch of kids that run smack into reality for the first time that they have no skills; this tends to make them very angry and jacks up their fall back position, I am entitled because.
At this point these kids got to college and hilarity ensues usually with colleges dumbing down everything. The most perfect example of this is Evergreen College in WA St. Over the last decade it went from loopy to illiterate.

In the name of equity they are eliminating the grading of homework and allowing retakes of tests.
If people focus on this, they can be pushed back. In Virginia, the state board has currently pretended to back off on eliminating advanced math at least until after the governer's election.
