Okay Now I'm Annoyed Edition
Top Story

  • I haven't had time to even look at my twin HP Spectres recently. Just did. I shouldn't have.

Both of them have suffered severe battery bloat and are now little more than e-waste. And I've hardly had the time to use them.

I do have a new notebook arriving any day, but it would have been nice to still have the old notebooks. I don't know why these suffered from battery bloat in particular; my old Dell has been running for years and while its battery is wearing out it still works fine.

  • Minisforum has announced a couple of NUCs. (AnandTech)

There's an Intel model which is maybe interesting for some specific tasks, and a rather nice AMD model. Ryzen 9 5900HZ, up to 64GB RAM, one M.2 and two 2.5" drives, 2.5Gb Ethernet, two DisplayPort and two HDMI outputs. It's 7.5x7" so rather larger than a typical NUC, but a typical NUC fits at most one 2.5" drive.

On the other hand, it has a 120W power supply, which seems like a lot.

47 21 What is battery bloat?

---
Lithium batteries when defective or aging out will expand. At this point you want to toss them because they are ripe for catching fire. For modern super thin laptops that can cost well over a $1000.00 this is a big deal since the batteries are glued in. Replacement is interesting and not at all in expensive.

65 My mom was the hospital a few months back, and of course they ran a Covid test on her, which came back negative. So. I asked the nurse how many PCR cycles they used...

She had no clue. Recently, samples of a kiwi fruit, ice cream, and coca-cola have all tested positive for covid.

Now, politifact has tried to debunk it, claims test isn't designed for use on non-human samples, etc etc etc.

Afaik, DeSantis is the only gubner requiring the test labs report how many cycles they are doing.

I was attending Portland State University during that whole business. The courthouse was just down the street from the PSU. It was my first and last media circus I was able to attended in person. I nearly flunked out of school that quarter. My friends and I were able to weasel our way into the media scrum, it was so much fun. We even got to see Tonya. She then went on to become something tragic while at the same time it was all self inflicted though there is a case it was inevitable. The tossing a hub cab and hitting her then boy friend in the head is one my favorite post knee whacking incidents.

Proving my Tonya bona fides (go figure, why I spent a part of my life on this topic is complete mystery to me); she is living in Yacolt, WA, is married, has a kid, and is getting along in life. Rural is one way to describe that area, elk bowing hunting is another. 80 miles of dirt road works too.

When you are in the shipyards one person can start a pretty big fire before it gets noticed. Entire sections of the ship are empty because of work and only get a visit every 4 hours or so from a fire watch. Add into that all sorts of flammable stuff laying around because of the work being done. I hated being in the yards. Messy, dirty and extremely loud.

More seriously it appears the fire suppression equipment was "sabotaged". Just as likely a lot of it was useless because "refit." Now add in the command deciding "one team, one fight" and having a bunch of sailors living on board during the refit.

Naval aviation has always fascinated me, I love logistical problems and it is a constant one. Thing is I was under the impression serving on any carrier was something of a prestige billet and the accused was not a prestige guy.

160 Pixie, the same thing happened to my spectre. I was able to buy a new battery for about $100 I think. The teardown and replacement were easy and I have no computer hardware skills. It's been good as new since replacement.

But know that there was an HP battery recall so check to see if your spectres were included, you might get a free replacement.

Posted by: banana Dream at August 05, 2021 07:32 AM (2xiYd)

161 The battery was $118, $17 shipping, $10 tax. It was initially on backorder but started shipping from HP a few weeks after my initial order. I had to get "ASSY-BATT 4C 42WH 1.92Ah LI SO04042XL-PL" for my spectre 13

165 Batteries are not mature techs, despite billons spent on research.
Posted by: NaCly Dog (u82oZ) at August 05, 2021 04:17 AM

On the contrary. Batteries are very mature technology. The first batteries were made in the 18th century and there's been good theory to guide battery chemistry for at least a century. The desire to take computing on the road starting in the mid-1980's has caused a lot of research to be done in how to make batteries lighter and more energy-dense, with some success.

The problem is not a lack of maturity in the technology. Things like batteries just suck at storing energy. The problem that manufacturers face is that the technology is so mature that it's hard to make substantial improvements in battery performance. My guess is that the dramatic improvements in battery performance are simply impossible, but they've got to keep trying.

Posted by: Cybersmythe at August 05, 2021 09:38 AM (17UTy)

166 When my Spectre battery bloated, I found a replacement for around $45 like this one:

https://tinyurl.com/5wdbhnnr

YouTube taught me how to swap out the old one; not much more difficult than the old days with desktop machines. Turns out the deformation was entirely due to the fat battery and once it was gone the case went right back to its original form.

Now I make sure to put the PC in "sleep" mode if I'm away from the machine for more than five minutes so it has a chance to cool down.
