Mid-Day Break Open Thread

An emaciated, sick tiny kitten, Charlie, is also paralyzed, because (they believe) a child psychopath threw it against the wall.

But good humans are stronger than evil humans, and there's a lot more of them too. Instead of euthanizing him, they gave him spine surgery, and then physical therapy. Worth watching!

Never give up and never give up on anyone (even a kitten) who himself won't give up.

I just watched this from CBD's YouTube account. Really good stuff.

The bit about the mice being three times poorer at solving mazes when forced to "multi-task" has been proven again and again in humans. People think they can "multi-task." They cannot. What they can do is do one thing poorly, break their concentration and flow to do another thing poorly, then return to the first thing they were doing poorly, although now they will take a long time to refresh their minds to pick up where they left off, etc.

It's been proven in studies that this kind of always-interrupting-your-thoughts-and-flow is just bad for thinking and bad for work. I know that it was bad for me when I used to try to "multi-task" between different things.

I don't do that anymore. I work on just one thing for an hour or two, and then, for a break, I'll switch to something lighter or more fun. And then I turn that off, and get back to the original task.

And don't even get me started on the Phones Out in social situations thing. Or the people who have decided to make their phones their leashes, constantly beeping and buzzing that there's a new email or a new like on Twitter or a new reply on FaceBook.

Psychotic!

I cannot fathom someone who would deliberately hurt an animal like that. I'm not fond of some animals, true -- alligators and crocodiles, for example -- but I would not set out to hurt one.

Insects? Fair game. (Though I wouldn't hurt a ladybug or a butterfly. Maybe I'd better specify "pests" or "harmful insects.") Spiders I leave alone because they kill other pests.

We were sitting at a bar and - I thought of, you know - actually talking. They sat, motionless, each of them staring at their phones. Oblivious to the mind bogglingly beautiful sunset taking place. They never put the things down, even when eating they were scrolling and texting. And this is when social media was still pretty darned new. I think at that moment I really started hating those things. Oh, and this couple was in their late 30's early 40's.

A more interesting graph shows how humans nowadays have a natural attention span of around 15-20 minutes before their mind wanders. TV advertisers exploit this to the second when programming in commercials. It can be exploited by skilled instructors as well by breaking up the monotony of a lecture with a small activity. That nudges students to re-focus their attention and they learn much better.

My brother calls this "electro-trahsing." The phone stays in my pocket when I am dining with others. If I'm alone it's usually out because I'll read something on it - but when the waitress comes up, I do turn it over and push it out of the way (because I don't want to fish the thing in and out of pocket all the time).

But year. The constant distraction. About eight or nine years ago, I was in a meeting and like I usually do, I set it to "vibrate." I never took it off of that mode. I can ignore a buzz in a way that I can't ignore a noise.

251 I'd love to have a dog.
But I live in a small space. I don't care for small dogs.
And I'm gone all day, 5-6 days a week. It wouldn't be fair to a dog to be gone that long, and it would be awfully selfish of me.

Maybe someday.
I'd love to have an Akita.

You can mediate that a bit by getting two dogs, so they keep each other company, but I agree that leaving them alone that long is cruel.

Now, American Eskimos are small dogs, but they are sweet and loving.

Our grandson is at summer camp for 2 weeks. No cell phones allowed. I had it in my office for about 3 hours and all it did was vibrate, ding, chime, and buzz. The kid's got every fucking alert, notification, etc. for every social thing he's into turned on. It was nonstop.

So I did him a favor and turned all the notifications off and logged him out of all that shit. I'm betting he wont even realize it for weeks.

OK, if that's how we're playing this game, how about:

a] Apply this to illegal aliens who have not gotten a variety of childhood vaccines -- make them pay 99% for not having measles, mumps, TB, etc. vaccinations -- or better yet, stop them from enetering!

b] Apply this to women who;ve had an abortion, since they are removing a future taxpayer from contributing to society blah blah blah.

When I was a boy, our tabby Rusty proved to be a good mouser. He'd leave the little corpse on Mom's chair at the dining table. Didn't freak her out, she'd grown up on a farm. It showed he was her cat first and foremost, though he was good friends with all of us in the family (and related to each of us differently).

just transfer it from stocks into cash like stuff in your 401K. You probably have options to invest in stuff that more cash like. It may not dump for a while, or it may be next week. If it doesn't dump there is going to be and is now, impressive inflation rates. So you'll lose compared to the rate of inflation. So its not a long term strategy. But would you rather loss 6% a year for two years, or lose 30 to 40% sometime in the next 6 months. . . And if it does tank and you are in cash, you can get back in at a low.

But I'm not a professional advisor. And this is not advice. Its humor.

Remember, these donks who kneel for BLM will also fight tooth and nail against the $10K cap on the SALT deduction.

And that's what allowed him to build his war machine.

Actually, I don't think any VWs were ever produced, except for a concept model, until after the war.

And I think the company refused to honor the paymets of the people who, during the Reich, sent in money for their own Volkswagen.

I don't do that anymore. I work on just one thing for an hour or two, and then, for a break, I'll switch to something lighter or more fun. And then I turn that off, and get back to the original task."

It is switching from a focused state of mind to focused state of mind vs switching from a focused state of mind to diffuse state of mind. Switching from focused to diffused modes of thinking allows your brain to process and build physical neural structures (memories).

It also allows the diffused mode of thinking to work on problems in the background without you even trying.
