Shipwreck In The Desert
Carl Haag

What I really like about this work is how Haag reinterprets a very popular theme of Romanticism—the shipwreck--with another very popular theme in the movement—Orientalism. The work is still tragic, but it is the use of opposites that make this painting work.

Generally, art depicting shipwrecks are swirls of color, line, and form. The compositions are dramatic and chaotic. The palettes are cold. None of that is present here, yet the mood remains the same—it oozes distress and dread. The actual ship of the shipwreck is replaced by metaphor—the camel, the ship of the desert. It had met with some catastrophe and died. Its “sailor” is marooned, not on a deserted island, but in the middle of an actual desert. Vultures circle.

Like the horizon of a blue/black ocean blends into the sky, so does this here. The color of the hot sky is similar to the yellow sand. The blurry, faded background implies the hot thermals rising from the land that create a sense of intense heat. The yellow palette reflects the heat of the sun and intensifies the aridness. The land is desolate and the man is stranded alone. This man is forced to try to make for civilization alone, carrying any provisions he can salvage himself. The going will be hard and slow, and it seems he will have little cover from the elements. The odds are not very good for this man, and he knows it. His pose is that of pleading for a miracle.

The landscape is flat and vast. Spears, camel, landscape, clouds… all form strict horizontals. The man is the only vertical element in this work, and just like in any flat landscape, the vertical element will attract attention. Since his color matches his surroundings, his verticality allows him to be seen and dominate the painting. The viewer is meant to focus on him and his condition. The horizontals are also light in tone and light in weight. The painting floats. The solid vertical of the man and the intense drama anchor the piece.

His pose also mimics the vultures. The hopelessness of his situation is emphasized by the birds. In your mind’s eye, remove them. Without them, while still in a dire situation, his situation is more indefinite. Now reintroduce the vultures. Their presence, dark against a light sky is unavoidable. They weigh the work down and dampen the mood considerably. I find the imagery interesting here. Two of the greatest universal conflicts and opposites are represented—Man versus Nature, and Life versus Death.

146 The video CBD put on the sidebar is worth watching, and it indicates yet again - especially the beginning - that when it comes to children and technology, you should look at what the masters of the universe *do* rather than what they *say.*

Most social media executives don't use social media themselves. They hire people to manage their accounts, because they find social media to be both too distracting and too great a liability. For their children, social media is strictly forbidden. Beyond that, they typically don't allow their children any unsupervised screen time at all, and screen time is strictly rationed. Television and computer use happens in a public area of the house, and TVs and computers are not allowed in children's bedrooms. They typically do not give their children cell phones.

Now compare that to what they tell *you* to do, and what you ought to allow your children to do.

The crowd approached the Capitol police and eventually just pushed past them to go up the main stairs and stopped at the top - they did not go in. Ishtar
isn't actually that bad a movie despite its reputation. The problem is that it wants to be a Road picture, but Hoffman and Beatty not only have no chemistry, but neither have the training or experience to come off as seasoned song-and-dance men like Hope and Crosby.

That's the problem with Hollywood and why they are so insistent on recycling stale ideas; a modern reboot of a Road picture might be interesting, but you have no Hollywood team like Hope and Crosby, with decades of goodwill built up among a fairly homogenized American public.

The Amazon river runs for thousands of miles.

At some points, it runs through areas of the rain forest that are almost untouched and have been barely explored.

Because of the porous limestone in these areas, the river water leaks through the stone and travels deep into the earth, and forms underground pools almost a mile below the surface.

Over thousands of years, small blind transparent fish have lived and evolved in these pools. These fish have never seen the sun or surface and have never been seen by the human eye, these fish care more about what George Bush thinks than I do.

330 Late to the thread, dammit!

Kris did her usual excellent analysis of why this is such an effective painting. The only things I can add are the use of searing dark yellow color. Carl Haag managed to get the image of heat and desolation without glare which would wash out the scene. The other is the level of detail in the manmade and related objects: his clothing, the spear, the saddle, and the features of the man himself. Everything not of the earth is shown and demonstrates the care and effort that went into them. Now it's all worthless and futile against the power of the land (or the 'sea').

Fascinating painting. Thanks to CBD and Kris for the choice.

331 JoeF here's what I think

I think the vaccines do SOMETHING. the moderna one for sure hurt me bad. it SUCKED. something was going on!

but they are actually THERAPEUTICS - not vaccines! so they subdue the symptoms of COVID, so you won't get severe disease. BUT they don't reduce the viral load when you have it! so you feel fine and go out and about thinking "I don't have COVID" and spread it quite well.

OOPS! they don't want to admit this, plus if they're therapeutics they can't get the same "protections" a vaccine gets, and can't be required, either.

Posted by: BlackOrchid at July 28, 2021 09:54 AM (j9HX3)

332 So let me get this straight.

In an attempt to coerce people into taking an ineffective vaccine, the government is punishing those who've already taken it in an attempt to anger those same people enough where they lash out at those who've chosen not to take the vaccine?

So the government is manipulating people to get what they want.

Congress has oversight power for the bureaucracy. They have become a Fifth Column. Have these Republican idiots in Congress ever thought that maybe, just maybe, the way to reel them in would be to slash their budgets, downsize them and let them exist on a starvation diet? Anybody?

If Kevin McCarthy ever had an original thought and grew a set of balls, his head would explode. Same with McConnell. By the way- where is the strategy those two buffoons have? Maybe work together and at least act like you have a plan and some manhood?

It was really only a matter of time until this mental illness stuff showed up in competition. The only answer is to have a mental health handicap added to the score. Each team will be evaluated prior to competition and points awarded on a sliding intersectional/racial/other oppressions mental health score.

No points will be awarded during competition and each team will be given a different non-rank specific medal made of renewable, equitably sourced, zero-energy materials.

1) the judges banned her routine for being dangerous and it would be too difficult for her to create a new one on the fly

2) Japan Olympic Cmte banned the use of an ADHD drug for competitors, and she was taking it and can't focus now

I'm convinced things would be better if McConnell was out of the picture.

The saddest thing about all of this is that we know what an America-first agenda looks like, but nobody is serious enough to hold a real challenge to the RNC cuck-lites.

Was there a real challenger to Mitch in the 2020 elections? It would have been the perfect opportunity to get a real America-first Republican to primary Mitch and outline - in detail - exactly how Mitch did everything in his power to show that he is not on our side.

We need people with the time, the money, the support, and the logistics to pull it off. It's entirely possible, but without proper organization, every mission is a suicide mission.

Biles has said in past interviews that she wanted to go to these Olympics to keep the pressure up on the US Olympic committee and USA Gymnastics to come fully clean about what they knew and when regarding Nasser and Karolyi. Not a good reason, IMO, to compete, but that's her story. Additionally, as I noted earlier today, Newsmax said this morning that the US Olympic teams have full time psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers who are embedded with each team. Imagine what those clowns are telling her.
I also read on another sports blog yesterday from a woman whose daughter is a competitive gymnast that when a gymnast says they were lost during a routine, they are describing losing visual perspective of the ground during flips, which they have to have to know where to land. IF they lose that perspective, they can land on their neck, etc. with terrible results. Biles said she was lost during her warm up and vault.

She needs to get off the stage. Either shut up and compete or move aside, go home and let one of the alternates have a chance. The media will not leave this alone until she is out of the picture.
