The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

This has everything! An idiot United States Senator who has a really dumb idea, and buttresses it with a profound misunderstanding of market economies and the relationship between government and the governed.

Wait...that describes about 90% of the U.S. Senate. It's Fauxcahontas Warren who seems to think that the necessarily adversarial relationship between the IRS and the people from whom it takes money should be tilted even more in favor of the government, mostly because that is pretty much all she knows: the answer to every problem is more government!

Elizabeth Warren Wants the IRS To Create Its Own TurboTax. What Could Go Wrong?

Earlier this week, New York Times editorial board member Binyamin Applebaum wrote an opinion column criticizing Intuit's decision to exit from the federal program that allowed some people to use the free version of the company's TurboTax software. Applebaum accused Intuit of "abandoning the pretense of good citizenship" in favor of seeking profit before making his real case: that the federal government, more specifically the IRS, should make their own tax-filing software—an argument enthusiastically applauded by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.), who rarely misses an opportunity to decry a company for "chasing profits."
I don't want corporations to have any sense of good citizenship. You know, like Twitter and FaceBook are good citizens. The idiocy of putting profit or shareholder value below some amorphous sense of morality is a slippery slope, and one down which we are accelerating rather quickly. A nice boring 50 year span of companies just doing what they do best and not meddling in other parts of society would be a grand thing.

Wouldn't it be nice if Coca Cola just made soft drinks and didn't lecture us about race? Or Twitter bowing out of the business of deciding what should be socially acceptable discourse and just acting as a neutral conduit of people's 280 character thoughts?

Shockingly, the article doesn't mention legalizing drugs or opening the borders, so I had to double-check that it was really Reason and not some spoof. But they have gone so far into the weeds that they actually suggest that a government tax preparation system "might" be a good idea. And it gets worse, with the author being carefully neutral about the idea that government and the tax code should try to decrease "inequality," whatever that is.

But the overarching tone is one that is profoundly depressing. We have gone from an America that was reasonably self reliant, to one in which relatively simple activities like doing one's taxes must be assisted by government.

Sure, doing taxes is irritating, but there are many free methods that are easy to use, in spite of Warren's and Reason's claims. And if worse comes to worst, there is always a pad of paper, a pencil and a calculator. But the assumption is that Americans are too stupid and lazy to figure this stuff out on their own. We aren't talking about complex tax returns with multiple income streams and complex financial instruments. Those people use accountants or are happy to pay Intuit or some other financial software company a hundred bucks for their software.

Of course, as Reason correctly points out, the best way to fix this is to fix the tax code. But that won't happen. Ever. People like Fauxcahontas Warren are far too invested in the labyrinth, which allows them to get rich, courtesy of the American taxpayer.

22 I would never knowingly use US government software, nor allow it onto my computer. If the only option was "use the IRS version of Turbo Tax, or else file by paper" then I'd be dusting off my calculator and warming up the printer.

It isn't just because that software is going to be an unreliable, unstable, resource-hogging, privacy-destroying, information-leaking wreck of code that is impossible to uninstall and ruins everything forever (and it will be all of that and more), but also because I do not trust them to not put hooks into the system that spy on me forever, and I also don't trust them to write software than can do arithmetic properly.

Also, it's not their job. Their job is to process returns, not provision them.

51 I have noticed lately that my taste for post apocalyptic games/movies have kind of waned- and some of it is due to my conflation in my head between post apocalyptic and dystopias. Then I started wondering if this was a false assumption. Are post apocalyptic and dystopia the same thing? Define your (my) terms.

For dystopia, I usually always have the same image- Cyberpunk like. Trashy, cramped, crowded city streets. More than that, it is where the people are hopeless. Feeling that their lives are controlled by shadowy forces (be it corporate or government) that they have no control over. Capricious justice. Rampant crime. Restriction of travel and movement.

The odd thing is, post apocalyptic is NOT the same thing and often has elements of the opposite. Empty. Depopulated. Ruined areas. Urban exploration. However, freedom of movement and action, speech and deed. A clearing away of all of the crap. I think this is why they have always been compelling.

Of course I also think they should also have algebraic formulas as well as instructions ( "L1 - L2" versus "Subtract line 2 from line 1")

77 When I come to power, I will destroy the IRS. The Federal Government will be financed by a straight head tax in the amount of $4,000 for adults and $2,000 for children, to be remitted to the feds by the states. How the states choose to fund it is up to them. Assessments reset with each census, and the rates may be increased after each census, but increases will be capped at the cumulative rate of inflation less 1%. In the event of deflation, assessments will be reduced by that rate. The Federal Government can make do on $1.15 trillion.

One immediate area of cost savings will the the IRS, which is no longer necessary and can be eliminated.

They don't care who they elect, they don't do any research or put any thought into it because they have nothing to lose.

Tlaib election and reelection is a perfect example. It is odd that 'post apocalyptic' includes a lot of elements of what I would define as 'Utopian'- aside from the destruction and depopulation.

What got me thinking as I was pouring my coffee was: those mitigating circumstances of post apocalyptic (depopulation, destruction) are actually the elements that a leftist would consider the GOOD parts.

Actually, this can't be further from the truth.
No politician wants to be labeled as the person who disrupted the tax code, but in the bottom of their hearts, they want the tax code reworked.
The best example of this was the 1986 tax reform by Ronald Reagan. A "lame duck" Reagan took the lead, and the folks on Capitol Hill got a clean tax code, which they could now use to extort 'donations' from those who were "injured" in the reform in exchange to new 'loopholes'.

This is my preferred approach, with three extremely important caveats:
1. The rate is capped and can never exceed 12%, and that rate must be consistent on all goods and services.
2. There are no exceptions to the tax. All goods and services, regardless of costs, are included.
3. The tax applies *only* to new goods and services. Used car? No federal tax, it was already paid. New car? Pay the tax.

There was a SM Stirling series in the 90s which was a continuation of Terminator 2. Ignore most of the stuff, but in it, he posited a not insignificant number of people who would collaborate with Skynet in the destruction of mankind. Their dream was of a completely empty, pristine environment that they alone could enjoy. In other words, kill everyone else so they could enjoy beautiful green fields and trees. Even though that meant the destruction of the human race, after they were dead, who cared?

239 When I come to power, I will commission a piece of software to map regulatory dependencies. This would be similar to software package-management in Linux, where it automatically figures out what the software you *want* depends on, and installs it automatically. My purpose would be the opposite.

There will be no new regulations while the software is being developed. Once done, each secretary must have on my desk, by 4:00 PM ET every Friday, a list of 30 regulations they recommend repealing. All 30 will be put through the software. Any dependencies - regulations that depend on the repealed regulation - will also be repealed. Also, the agencies themselves are *not* allowed to access the software. It is President staff only.

If they miss the deadline, 100 regulations will be selected at random from their department, sent through the software, and repealed - along with all dependencies.

The agencies will tie themselves into knots trying to find the cheapest regs to repeal, and get nothing else done.

it doesn't matter. tracking an endemic upper respiratory virus makes no sense and never made any sense. it's over. this bug is part of the many bugs we deal with seasonally. the vaccines they offer are therapeutics only. which gives them value as therapeutics of course, but they don't do what we normally think a vaccine does.

stop worrying and live life, get outside, take your vitamins, eat right, and exercise. reset to how we dealt with flu seasons previous to 2020's got-inspired insanity.

they used the novel "flu" (about a third of our annual flus are actually coronaviruses, some pretty severe) as an excuse to attempt to stop the economy. not only to stop Trump, but also to stop the velocity of money. maybe even then TPTB knew we were headed for a financial crash despite Trump's policies. remember, he was fond of spending, bigly.

330 A nice boring 50 year span of companies just doing what they do best and not meddling in other parts of society would be a grand thing.

I think this is fantasy on two levels. It assumes big business was apolitical and uninvolved in government at one time, which likely is not true. And it assumes that we can somehow return to this likely mythical golden age of corporations interested solely in bland corporate matters.

Everything really is downstream of culture. If you lose a culture war, you'll find, as we conservatives are finding, that every institution is against you, military, law enforcement, corporations, you name it, all those institutions that we once thought of as allies because they were, in the general sense of being relatively conservative institutions in a relatively conservative society. Well, not anymore.

Government and corporations are always going to reflect someone's values. There was a time when conservatives understood it should be ours. Then "we" decided that the equivalent of unilateral disarmament made sense, gave up the culture war, and are now surprised to find we don't really like the results.

Government and corporations are always going to reflect someone's values. There was a time when conservatives understood it should be ours. Then "we" decided that the equivalent of unilateral disarmament made sense, gave up the culture war, and are now surprised to find we don't really like the results.

There was a feeding frenzy from April-June, million dollar cash offers, multiple bids, insane market for beach/water front. IMO, that has subsided. Posted by: Tonypete at July 29, 2021 10:59 AM (6WCwE)

387 A question because I'm too lazy to search InterWebs today:

Do the COVID mRNA doses produce COVID anti-bodies in your blood only when the stuff detects COVID bugs in your blood? Or are they supposed to produce long-duration anti-bodies soon after the shot?

A friend got both shots of one of the mRNA things in Feb and March. Last week he got a routine blood test and his doc told him he has NO detectable anti-bodies.

What's the practical (key word!) use of a vaccine passport if the stuff is no longer working inside you? Will everyone ultimately be forced to show both a vaccine credential AND a recent positive anti-body test certificate? I fear the insane crap with vaccines and periodic testing and masking is going to get more insane.

And furnace control. And ovens. And so on. Pis are complicated and wouldn't be my preferred approach, but it would probably work. Reproducing the chips in FPGAs would likely be a lot simpler and more reliable - and also pretty damn cheap, since they're reprogrammable. The immune response is incredibly complex, and AFAIK antibodies do not continue to be produced in the absence of the antigen. But the body learns what the antigen looks like and is better able to produce lots of antibodies (and other cells) very quickly when it sees the antigen again.

There was a feeding frenzy from April-June, million dollar cash offers, multiple bids, insane market for beach/water front. IMO, that has subsided. 428 ER Visit Exposes Reality of Modern Medicine!

After what I witnessed in the ER today, I am absolutely never allowing another vaccine into my body or into my family's bodies! In the short time we were in a treatment room, we witnessed three separate patients with COVID-19 vaccine complications.

One man was in his 50's and had what they thought was pneumonia and blood clots. Turns out it was not pneumonia, but a respiratory complication from the vaccine along with the blood clots. They were going to admit him to the hospital until they realized it was worse than they could handle and were preparing to transport him to a trauma hospital.

Another woman could barely stand or walk and was violently shaking from-you guessed it-the vaccine. The third event was a pair of people who were having severe side effects from the shot and were concerned enough that one of them needed the emergency department.

It doesn't end there. There appeared to be a high-level executive roaming the halls who was frantically micromanaging the medical staff.

There are a lot of papers coming talking about how the spike-focused vaccines do goofy things with the natural immune response. They may or may not have avoided the ADE issues of the SARS-1 vaccine attempts, but they may have also made it so that some of the vaxxed have confused immune responses to other strains/things.

And then you have the issue where some people seem to keep expressing from the vaccine for months.... We are adding about a person a week here to the "got vaxxed, died a few weeks later" list. If they want to force people to take this they're going to have a war on their hands.

For aftermarket, when parts have gone obsolete, yes, that would be a good option. Some companies popped up making old chips because there is still a market for sectors where you cannot use a substitute without going through a huge set of regulatory hoops. Then again, companies want you to buy the new, crappier versions of things that break down more often and only they can fix. I had a compressor go out on a 6-year-old refrigerator; needed to get a new one because the cost of the compressor, if even available, was almost as much as a new fridge. What a marketing model!

However,

A) the spike protein itself can cause various syndromes without being part of the virus

Is this a fair assessment of reality?

483 2 weeks ago I was in the ER for high fever (103.2). I had sweats/chills general dead feeling off and on for a week. I am not vaxxed. The nurse was dressed for the black plague. My test came back negative for "rona. The doc said I likely had one of the millions of viruses around and I was like about over it. Two Tylenol and on my way.

484 "We aren't talking about complex tax returns with multiple income streams and complex financial instruments. Those people use accountants or are happy to pay Intuit or some other financial software company a hundred bucks for their software."

Go talk to a small business owner.
Literally ANY small business owner, I don't care which.
Tell then you said they are "HAPPY" to do their taxes every quarter; and with the difficulty and complexity of those taxes.

Have your next of kin get back to us with the response.

485 "We have gone from an America that was reasonably self reliant, to one in which relatively simple activities like doing one's taxes must be assisted by government."

Imagine that! The last time I did my own taxes the return and supporting worksheets easily exceeded my Master's thesis in length. And that was on what my accountant classifies as a "simple return."

486 Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The formulas are provided for you. Just fill in the blanks.

BTW, TurboTax is not hard to use. Takes less than a day. When I had a problem with a return (a scanned W-2 resulted in an income of $250 MILLION, and a tax liability of $93 MILLION, the help line worked with me for several hours - and they were delightfully amusing and competent people) they wouldn't quit until they straightened it out. It made for an interesting afternoon and a great anecdote for parties.
