My family, mid-late 80s, had the idea to train enterprise and work ethic. Every chore was paid. I washed every damn dish I could lay my hands on, and never went without the latest video games.

But this is a tough scene. Transporting water in a frozen Russia wouldn't be easy. The children are trying to help the struggling figure (father?) pushing in back but are too young to fully understand the effort and importance of the task. It's grim with the frost mist obscuring the distant background, the hint of a worn grave stone to the left of the children (probably a mile marker), icicles forming off the cart, and so forth. As well done as it is, the painting doesn't make me want to hang it anywhere.

Nah. These are serfs, not slaves or indentured servants.
The difference between a serf and a slave is that a serf is legally considered a natural resource, part of the land, like fish, game, mineral rights, or timber. Buy the land, the serfs come with.
That was slightly (but only slightly) better than being a slave, because you couldn't be sold away from your family.
Indentured servants, on the other hand, had contracts with fixed lengths. Serfs were born into servitude and could never leave it (once in a great while the lord would emancipate an especially-favored serf, but it wasn't common).

It isn't unprecedented. My brother has a big Time Life coffee table book called "A Day in the Life of the Soviet Union." It was published in the late 70s, I think, and it is a photo book. All of it is "slice of life" stuff. It is phenomenally interesting. Most of the Western photography is what you would expect: competent shots that reflect the Soviet party line (neatly-arranged schoolchildren, orderly columns of factory workers, etc.).
The Soviet photography was a bit different, and much of it was subtly subversive. Two pictures really stand out in my mind. One is of a little girl in a dress sliding down a slag heap. That picture is captioned something like, "A child playing outside." That one is obviously subversive. The other was a picture of a few shirtless young boys huddled around a big lamp. The caption describes it as something like, "Siberian youth receiving Vitamin D from sun lamps." The subversion there is more subtle, but extremely effective: this place can manufacture UV lamps, but not milk.

Yeah. A lot of serfs - it depends on the system, and when - *could* self-emancipate by fleeing. If you can stay gone for a year or a day, or five years, or whatever, then you're a freeman. That option exists neither for slaves nor the indentured. If you are a serf in a system without that carve-out, then the distinction falls to zero - you're a slave.

if you never read a history book about America's past published after the 70s, you would still have it all, and really be better off. Sure they don't do much about the 80s and on, but before that, they are much better. The reason is simple, they focus on history.
Anytime someone asks about a book on the Civil War, the Revolution, or the Founding Fathers, I always give that advice. Hell, the novel The Killer Angels was published in the early 70s.

That surgery may be over now but I believe there were complications resulting in a collapsed lung and his twitter stream looks like he's been losing a large amount of blood in just a few days.

Yesterday Miss Linda tried the Bimectin, the ivermectin paste we got from Tractor Supply. She mixed it with some peanut butter. Lousy taste, but it was over quickly. Side effects? She said she had a little "cold spike"-like sensation between the eyes for a few moments, and a little later she sniffled a bit as if she were about to sneeze, but didn't. Otherwise no effects, which is good. Now I know what to expect.

Collapsed lung is a known adverse effect of pectus surgeries of any type. Prognosis is usually good.

They have this new tech in aircraft maintenance that induces mag fields in most any metallic structure, even nonferrous ones, uses an AI and deep scanning to adjust the fields and pulls it all back to OML with very little strength compromise. Very quickly. It'd be cool if they could make a personal one or at least for body shops. There is a huuuuge margin on fixing aircraft so probably not.

That the same sandwich costs 3x as much in one area from another does not mean they have 3x the industrial capacity. HQ centers like Austin and Silicon Valley depend on the larger economy they are attached to, finance is also like this, they're proportional value affairs. Industry and resource extraction is somewhat more location agnostic. That is gold mined in China is as valuable as gold mined here.

That's interesting. At one point in his video the lady, and I could be wrong here she might be a dr. and not a nurse, she was telling him what to expect for recovery and then stopped and told everyone to turn the cameras off. She had started to say that he shouldn't expect "normal" I'm guessing based on what you say that the heart conformed to some state, that it will be better now, but you can't change that past history of the heart's lifetime morphology.

No it's literally an economic argument. We make nominal to real gdp conversions when we compare countries. When we talk about gdp growth we talk about real, not nominal. Industrial capacity is better compared by looking at goods produced in quality and quantity, not a simple addition of what the goods cost locally, because the law of one prices does not hold in reality.
Nominal GDP is just an aggregation figure of costs.

so why has NY almost begged companies to stay and also try to threaten rich people who plan to leave? It is like the stock market. The only way to make money on a stock is if its prospects grow. A very rich company or state might be on the 15th floor of a 20 story building, but if it never reaches the 16th floor, its prospects will not rise and the stock will not rise. Same with small caps and small states and countries. They might be on the 3rd floor, but it they go to the 6th floor, they are rising, their stocks are rising, and they will be considered economic drivers.

I'm looking at an article from Politico, which is relaying CNNs report of a currently unpublished CDC document and it is end of the world stuff. It recommends vaccine mandates and universal mask requirements.

I went to Catholic schools in the '70's and I remember a lot of teacher's strikes that decade.

My eldest daughter is a counselor at a parks & rec day camp. She has the 4 - 6 year olds. Some of these kids have experienced masks and lockdowns for almost half their lives.
She says they cannot follow the simplest of instructions (like put away your garbage after lunch) even though they've been in place since the 1st day. Lots of hitting and inappropriate contact/conduct, and many do not understand why it's not appropriate. It's sad to think of these children not having socialized for 18 months.

I doubt the dog is theirs, it's baring its teeth, a stray mongrel or from a nearby house.
The light over the city is dawn breaking, these kids (and their Dad) have been working since long before sunrise.
