He looks to be pushing. And the sled as well as the water barrel is dripping icicles.

There seems to be another figure behind the pushing workman -- looks to be seated with his back to us. Or maybe he's walking away down a slope. Hard to be sure in the cold mist.

Report, CDC Expected To Announce Tomorrow That COVID Vaccines Don't Work on Delta Variant -- Hence, White House Credits Trump With Vaccine Today

The White House would never credit Donald Trump with the vaccine rollout unless there was something negative about the vaccine that is going to hit the newswires; that is a no-brainer.

That baseline is why CTH said two months ago to watch for the moment when the White House credits Trump with the vaccine, because that's the moment when: (1) the vaccine was going to be identified as dangerous; and/or (2) reports would show the vaccine did not work.

Today the White House credited President Trump with the vaccine:

My family, mid-late 80s, had the idea to train enterprise and work ethic. Every chore was paid. I washed every damn dish I could lay my hands on, and never went without the latest video games.

Mission successful. Unfortunately, I grew up into a world that no longer rewards such things, so this work ethic only ever leads to me being worked like a rented mule and taken for granted.

114 Perov is a wonderful artist with his ability to show just what he wants: expressive, realistic figures and backgrounds, colors appropriate to the setting, and very individual characters. ("Sleeping Children" is especially effective.)

But this is a tough scene. Transporting water in a frozen Russia wouldn't be easy. The children are trying to help the struggling figure (father?) pushing in back but are too young to fully understand the effort and importance of the task. It's grim with the frost mist obscuring the distant background, the hint of a worn grave stone to the left of the children (probably a mile marker), icicles forming off the cart, and so forth. As well done as it is, the painting doesn't make me want to hang it anywhere.

137 > Looks like slave labor to me.

Nah. These are serfs, not slaves or indentured servants.

The difference between a serf and a slave is that a serf is legally considered a natural resource, part of the land, like fish, game, mineral rights, or timber. Buy the land, the serfs come with.

That was slightly (but only slightly) better than being a slave, because you couldn't be sold away from your family.

Indentured servants, on the other hand, had contracts with fixed lengths. Serfs were born into servitude and could never leave it (once in a great while the lord would emancipate an especially-favored serf, but it wasn't common).

It isn't unprecedented. My brother has a big Time Life coffee table book called "A Day in the Life of the Soviet Union." It was published in the late 70s, I think, and it is a photo book. All of it is "slice of life" stuff. It is phenomenally interesting. Most of the Western photography is what you would expect: competent shots that reflect the Soviet party line (neatly-arranged schoolchildren, orderly columns of factory workers, etc.).

The Soviet photography was a bit different, and much of it was subtly subversive. Two pictures really stand out in my mind. One is of a little girl in a dress sliding down a slag heap. That picture is captioned something like, "A child playing outside." That one is obviously subversive. The other was a picture of a few shirtless young boys huddled around a big lamp. The caption describes it as something like, "Siberian youth receiving Vitamin D from sun lamps." The subversion there is more subtle, but extremely effective: this place can manufacture UV lamps, but not milk.

Yeah. A lot of serfs - it depends on the system, and when - *could* self-emancipate by fleeing. If you can stay gone for a year or a day, or five years, or whatever, then you're a freeman. That option exists neither for slaves nor the indentured. If you are a serf in a system without that carve-out, then the distinction falls to zero - you're a slave.

It's a bit easier when you reflect on yourself. While you wouldn't necessarily be bad in the same ways, think about what circumstances might have made you a pestilence. It also helps to think about and appreciate the way others might overlook your own flaws and mistakes. There but for the grace of God go I.

223 Related: Summer 1993: I and a few other NASA engineers are at the main Russian space center outside Moscow. We are standing outside a test facility, and up the concrete-paved street comes a tractor hauling a sled that's a rusty piece of sheet steel. On the sled is a huge electric motor, resting on a pallet made of railroad ties. Road friction has been heating the steel sled for an unknown period, and while we're watching, the wood pallet bursts into flame. Some passing Russians get the attention of the tractor driver, who finally stops; much hilarity followed.

This is in the main Russian space center in the country. Soyuz spacecraft are built there. But no wheeled trailer is available to haul a big piece of equipment. No wonder we won the Cold War.

if you never read a history book about America's past published after the 70s, you would still have it all, and really be better off. Sure they don't do much about the 80s and on, but before that, they are much better. The reason is simple, they focus on history.

Anytime someone asks about a book on the Civil War, the Revolution, or the Founding Fathers, I always give that advice. Hell, the novel The Killer Angels was published in the early 70s.

303 He had surgery to open up his cheast, expand his ribcage with titanium beams, all to give his heart more room to operate. He had a genetic abnormality that resulted in his chest having a deep concavity that pushed in on his heart. This was supposed to correct that.

******

Pectus excavatum, in spite of the common misconception that the heart is "compressed" by the inward position of the sternum actually does not really affect cardiac function all that much. The primary impact is on pulmonary function due to restricted range of motion of the ribs due to their abnormal angle of attachment to the sternum (think of each rib as a bucket handle that can ordinarily swing freely).

The Nuss procedure involves inserting a pre-formed rod from side to side, passing between the heart and the breast bone, which when rotated into position forces the sternum forward, like pushing out a dent in your car's body. I'm not sure Crowder had the Nuss procedure, as it does not work as well in adults as compared to children and adolescents with more flexible skeletons.

Collapsed lung is a known adverse effect of pectus surgeries of any type. Prognosis is usually good.

most Congresscritters live in Nova, not DC. Some live in MD if they are stupid. There used to be a thing about that when VA meant something. Now it does not so it makes no sense to choose one over the other for most of them other than a tiny bit more freedom. But the point is, where these people actually live, there is no mask mandate. The counties they live in are not advised by the CDC to start masking again.

That the same sandwich costs 3x as much in one area from another does not mean they have 3x the industrial capacity. HQ centers like Austin and Silicon Valley depend on the larger economy they are attached to, finance is also like this, they're proportional value affairs. Industry and resource extraction is somewhat more location agnostic. That is gold mined in China is as valuable as gold mined here.

412 The nurse in his video said one of the heart strokes, I forget which, was delivering much less than nominal volume when he was standing upright.

*******

I don't know any specifics of Crowder's case and I didn't listen to a video by a nurse, but I can say this.

Cardiac function in this setting is based on a calculation of 'ejection fraction' (an estimation of what percentage of the blood in the left ventricle is pumped out with each heart beat). EF is calculated from echocardiographic measurements of the mid-chamber of the ventricle at full relaxation (end of diastole) and at full contraction (end of systole). The actual mathematical calculation of EF assumes a standard shape (modified cone or "bullet" shape) of the ventricle in order to estimate volume from the measured linear dimension.

In pectus excavatum, the overall shape of the heart may be distorted due to the position of the sternum, and therefore the estimate of EF from an echocardiogram may be suspect.

The heart is not suddenly squashed by the sternum. It has gradually evolved and adapted to the abnormal position.

White House chatter is that lockdowns for delta variant all but a done deal. Virtually all blue states are cooperating with WH / CDC. They're aiming for late 2nd week of August, per WH official

If they do this , they are doing it to cover up --or camouflage-- something bigger,
This makes no sense, scientific or otherwise.

435 That the same sandwich costs 3x as much in one area from another does not mean they have 3x the industrial capacity. HQ centers like Austin and Silicon Valley depend on the larger economy they are attached to, finance is also like this, they're proportional value affairs. No it's literally an economic argument. We make nominal to real gdp conversions when we compare countries. When we talk about gdp growth we talk about real, not nominal. Industrial capacity is better compared by looking at goods produced in quality and quantity, not a simple addition of what the goods cost locally, because the law of one prices does not hold in reality.

Nominal GDP is just an aggregation figure of costs.

493 There is another possibility (trying to read between the lines) Crowder is what, mid 40's? With severe enough restriction of ribcage motion (the bellows action of the chest wall), and long-standing restrictive lung capacity as a result, an individual could develop chronic pulmonary hypertension, with resultant right ventricular failure (dysfunction) that might not return to normal after pectus surgery. If that is his situation he should have had the pectus surgery years ago.

I shall now stop speculating about the trials and vicissitudes of Stephen Crowder and his sunken chest.

That's a nasty outlook for a teacher to have,

I went to Catholic schools in the '70's and I remember a lot of teacher's strikes that decade.

The nuns were very vocal about how abhorrent it is for teachers to walk out on their STUDENTS.

wrong, so be it, but it is blue as Hell and I doubt this will happen.
There is a major race going on and doing that would probably be the one
thing that might give the Repub a chance. Another thing he should try is
campaigning.

My eldest daughter is a counselor at a parks & rec day camp. She has the 4 - 6 year olds. Some of these kids have experienced masks and lockdowns for almost half their lives.

She says they cannot follow the simplest of instructions (like put away your garbage after lunch) even though they've been in place since the 1st day. Lots of hitting and inappropriate contact/conduct, and many do not understand why it's not appropriate. It's sad to think of these children not having socialized for 18 months.

507 We all know Dell has always made a ton of money. But their stock chart shows that the stock did nothing for a decade or more. I need to check it again, but if you go back, it languished forever. The reason was not that it didn't make money, the reason was it didn't increase its earnings or prospects in ways that meant something to investors. It was still a very rich company.

Stick to stir it to keep the ice from freezing solid.

The birds in the background? Like 'Shipwreck' they're ominous!

This is what poverty looks like. No obese brats, wearing $200 sneakers sitting on their asses. The kids have to work or they'll die. The father's working even harder to provide for them as best he can.

527 The figure in the back is carrying a bucket, having purchased some water.
The bumps in the road are so sleds & wagons can stop without rolling away.
I doubt the dog is theirs, it's baring its teeth, a stray mongrel or from a nearby house.
The light over the city is dawn breaking, these kids (and their Dad) have been working since long before sunrise.
The bigger image clearly shows how skinny and pale the children are, and how hard the Dad is working too.
The stick is also a 'dipper' to fill buckets people bring.

The birds... ominous!
