Netflix Is Bleeding Subscribers With No End To the Losses In Sight

Still feelin' Cuties, Netflix?

Netflix lost 430,000 subscribers in the US and Canada in the second quarter and issued weaker than expected forecasts for later in the year, rekindling investor doubts over how the streaming group will fare after the economic reopening.

The California-based company predicted it would add 3.5 million subscribers in the third quarter, disappointing investors who were looking for a stronger rebound in the second half of the year. Analysts had forecast that Netflix would add 5.9 million subscribers during the third quarter.

...

After adding a record number of customers last year, subscriber growth has slowed sharply as competitors entered the market and people emerged from coronavirus pandemic lockdowns.

Sign-ups have ground to a halt in the US, Netflix's largest market, where the majority of COVID restrictions have been rolled back.

Also way down are the ratings for the Olympics.

[R]atings are down more than 40% from just five years ago.

On top of the ratings for the opening weekend being down, ratings for the opening ceremony also hit a 33-year low.

All the way around, it was a bloodbath for NBC.

You had me at "It was a bloodbath for NBC."

The M-She-U's Black Widow continues falling -- it was down 67% in its second weekend, and now falls another 55% from there, making $11.5 million this past weekend.

Meanwhile...

The only media that will exist in ten years will be billionaires' propaganda sheets:

Die, media, die.

So this does seem to be a net loss of subscribers in the US and Canada while they still recorded worldwide growth of 1.5 million.

I suspect the wokeness is mostly on display in America, though.

28 By the way, companies like netflix play games with their customers in order to hide their actual losses.

They'll make it hard to unsubscribe, so people remain on the books longer than necessary, they'll slow walk removing people from subscriber rolls, etc.

Bottom line: subscriber losses are probably much higher than reported.

I think some of the issue is that they've run out of old shows and movies to shove in their pipeline. There are also 300 other streaming channels available with some of those other old movies.

There are countless "TV" shows on NF, all woke bullshit, no real classic action like Hardcastle and McCormick or Magnum PI, and there are just too fucking many.

I started watching this show Manifest with my GF. Interesting concept...truly shitty show otherwise, completely stupid, written by people with no life experience or understanding or compassion, lots of gay BS that comes out of nowhere and ends up being SUPER DUPER SERIOUS, and is so trite it's nauseating.

83 Start a clock on Netflix. Netflix is a Silicon Valley unicorn stock and they are a gigantic cash furnace. Their licensing costs - once a major upside factor, before they became popular and got vast libraries for peanuts - have become cripplingly expensive. Their own productions (the Netflix Originals) are supposed to help stem that tide, but that is also very expensive. All of it depends on subscriber counts never declining.

If they're declining, and if that decline has legs, it's going to a bloodbath. 2020 was Netflix's first year with positive cashflow, and even then they put up only $2 billion. That sounds like a lot, but 2017-2019 had a total of -$8 billion. They have a staggering quantity of debt and investor credulity is vital to their survival. Investors don't remain quite so credulous once you start bleeding subscribers. Now, this bleed isn't big yet - about 0.6% of N. American subscribers - but if it continues then it's game over for them. They ride a razor's edge at all times.

Their licensing costs - once a major upside factor, before they became popular and got vast libraries for peanuts - have become cripplingly expensive. Their own productions (the Netflix Originals) are supposed to help stem that tide, but that is also very expensive. All of it depends on subscriber counts never declining.

They were showing accounting profits but burning through cash. Basically they were amortizing these new shows they're making over a 10-year life or something. So instead of showing an expense this year for the development cost of the show, they'd show 1/10th of that amount and continue doing so for 10 years.

126 Netflix bet that it could rev up as a media producer faster than it would lose subscribers to the other streaming services ran by the original producers of beloved tv series and movies.

Now, it bets that it can rev up and be a better game producer than existing companies or it will have to borrow and buy gaming companies. They managed one transition from physical media to streaming but trying to be both a content provider and a gaming company probably will not work. Conglomerates generally produce crappy products because they fail to focus on running the existing businesses well and lard the company up with debt to buy the latest thing.

One of the few modern movies I've bothered to rent was "Nobody". I almost religiously avoid anything being produced these days. Since I was in college when Star Wars came out, I don't have the nostalgia for it - in fact I never even really liked it. Star Trek on the other hand was a perfect stab in the back of my childhood. But, after smelling the JJ taint, I knew better than to get near any of the modern Disney abominations. Looks like that was the right move. The basic rule these days seems to be: If it's a popular property and a big part of your youth, it will be used against you.

Heck, even the Drinker was a bit off base on that new Amazon dumpster fire Tomorrow War. I think he's just seen so much horrific that plain old bad and brain damaged doesn't register. It took me a few days to slog through that thing, and half a bottle of Whistle Pig.

About 10 years or so back, one guy was talking about Netflix doing its own shows and how it wasn't sustainable. His point was that they were using the same Hollywood model to create the shows. That meant having the Hollywood costs.

If you are a streamer and want original content that looks professional, you are going to have to break the model. I wonder if more of the old studio system model would work? Actors are on contract. You have a backlot so you can reuse sets. You develop talent.

Those are the A-list. They sold the rights to the A-list in the 80s, only now getting some of them back (Spider-Man remains with Sony).

It's a miracle that they made their B-team carry the MCU for 10 years, and now they're just teasing the possibility of the A-team maybe coming in a few years, but first you have to watch The Eternals first? Seems...odd.

++++
This is more dot-com bullshit that was so pervasive in the late 90s. Analysts and corporate finance guys are often fools or conmen.

Sorry, math incoming.
Netflix has about 75 million North American subscribers. The US has about 128.5 million households. Canada has about 12.5 million. The total is 141 million. That means that more than *half* of all North American households already have Netflix, which also means that most of the low-hanging fruit (customers with minimal cost to acquire) are already gone.

Expecting growth of 3.5 million subscriptions in a single quarter - or 5.3% of households *without* Netflix already - is absolutely insane when the market is tighter, there's more diversity in options and most people who want Netflix probably already have it.

But sure. Trees grow to the sky. Just like the Internet in the late 90s. No limits.

I can't remember Netflix ever making a profit. When they started out creating the DVD mail business, they immediately dumped all their money into streaming, which everyone thought was visionary but unsustainable because of the huge investment needed to make it technically viable.

I do seem to remember them getting close to profitability at one point, but I suspect that the move to content creator sucked up all the spare cash. Between their own penchant for throwing wads of Benjamins at every film school graduate they could find to direct their pedestrian action films, and the rapacious appetite of Hollywood Accounting, I doubt they had a chance in hell of making a real profit.

I assume Marvel will try that.

Plus they never saw print comics as anything more than old IP that could be strip mined. If they'd made a point of putting some good money and creativity into developing newer characters and planning major story arcs fifteen years ago when Iron Man hit theaters, then maybe they'd be in a better place today. 221 Eh. Everyone has guilty pleasures. People can like things, even terrible things. Za Boi Zach (Richard Meyer) liked the new Masters of the Universe cartoon for some reason, despite listing a LOT of reasons why it sucks and swallows.

Sadly, it's bigger than that. Many therapists feel obliged to attribute any failing to "the abuse". You didn't fail a few classes because you were partying, you were partying to compensate for the abuse that took place 10 years ago. They encourage clients to use trauma, no matter how small or large, as a reason for everything. I once had a patient who was encouraged to admit himself to a hospital a few days ahead of the "anniversary of the trauma" . As trauma's go, it was not the biggest thing ever (he was verbally slapped around by another kid in a locker room, and people laughed), but it was good enough to memorialize.

I see the same thing happening again with Kevin Smith's reimagining of the He-Man franchise. I don't know if Disney has that or not (wouldn't surprise me) but that model seems to be the go-to with all of the entertainment industry today. I'd be willing to bet that the new Ghostbusters is just an early 2000's version of woke. All the basic pieces will be there, just less rabid.

College football is their big money maker, and that's why ESPN has helped orchestrate the recent Texas and Oklahoman to the SEC drama. NBA rights were grossly overpriced, and the ratings have declined faster than expected, despite ESPN going outta their way to over-promote NBA analysis on all their opinion shows. ABC/ESPN is an also ran in the NFL space, but maybe they'll overbid for more games in coming years.

There was an article years ago about how ESPN bought the rights to all the obscure bag of dicks football bowls, figuring all the alumni would flock to see their 5-6 teams embarrass themselves one last time, and the enneffell wild card games no other network wanted. Except the alumni said fuck that and Disney Sports was stuck with this huge future liability (they went big on buying them for multiple years) that couldn't be offset by trimming staff. It was incredibly stupid.

Posted by: Ian S. at July 27, 2021 11:44 AM (ZGrMX)

Actually, they more than hinted at the world building - maybe as much as the first Wick. For instance, Hutch is a member of some shady secret government agency - tasked with "auditing" their own people. Yurian is a member of a version of the Russian mafia, tasked with protecting their retirement fund. I could easily see a sequel building on these 2 things - and at some point even putting Wick and Mansell in the same world, pitting them against each other or a common foe. I think it ended with more "sequel" written on it that the original John Wick, which easily could have wrapped with him walking off with his new buddy. But of course, they probably hoped it would make its money back at the time.

432 Re Black Widow, they sorta screwed the pooch on that.

First of all it is going backward from a storytelling perspective. Black widow is dead. So when guys are shooting at her, well I know they will miss.

Overall they are desperate to make her "one of the boys" and as tough as any man. Problem is 1) she's a little bitty thing 2) she's a spy. Have her do spy shit. Sneak aorund, heist things, disguises, seduce the bad guy, whatever. Making her a ground and pound punching machine doesn't work. 3) gender swapping characters - oh the shock! The surprise! It is no longer interesting (if it ever was). 4) They hired a female director because she is female, not an especially good director. 5) retconning in a family.

Posted by: Inspector kemp at July 27, 2021 05:31 PM (+DS2f)

433 F4 movie done right: Reed is ingenious but arrogant. Sue is powerful but has anxiety issues and is shy. Ben is a determined fighter, but is depressed about his looks, Johnny is a hot head extreme sports dude, who races into trouble. Each will have a arc that revolves aorund growing and changing, about overcoming internal as well as external obstacles.

F4 as they will make it: Sue is the leader and the only person with her head on straight. She is confident, and perfect. Reed will be a dickhead who's life would be better if he only listened more to Sue. Ben will wallow in depression, and need to be constantly coaxed into action by sue. Johnny will be changed to Jannie, and be the most powerful and awesome member, never making a mistake.

There will be no story arcs - the guys will never get better (because if they did they would potentially outshine the women), and the women are already as good as it is possible to be (hence any change would be detrimental).
