Gun Thread: Post NoVaMoMe Discussion and Analysis Edition!

hello-moron scaled.jpg

Howdy, Ya'll! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also give a bigly welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

So! Another NoVaMoMe is in the record books. Oh, we laughed, we cried, we put out fires and we raised bail money. A rip-roarin' good time was had by all, I think! I would like to invite those who attended to share their experiences here tonight, without disclosing the location please, in the hopes it will encourage others to join us next year! I want give thanks to the greatest co-host in the history of the universe, bluebell, for being such a good friend and for doing all of the work. She's the best!

With that, let's get the the gun stuff below, shall we?

Correction
First, allow me to correct something I wrote last week regarding the size of the NRA Board.

I personally think the board, at 25 members, is too large and creates too much opportunity for factions to develop among the members.

Well I had that number wrong! I thought it seemed too low based on what I recalled, but honestly just didn't check. Fortunately, our pal iron308 came to the rescue!

The NRA BoD has 75 members, 25 of which are elected each year.
Posted by: iron308 at July 18, 2021 07:59 PM (6D9ZD)

Well if 25 is too many, then 75 is approximately three times too many! Thanks iron308!

Follow-up
We've had a great discussion the last two weeks on what to say and do after being involved in a self-defense shooting. Here's a short video featuring Massad Ayoub, a recognized expert on the subject.

Looks like Mr. Ayoub validates many of the same steps we were discussing, and I also received a great suggestion by email from our pal pmacb

One item to add to the post defensive shooting "to do" list is ask for an ambulance and a ride to the nearest hospital.

Here's my rationale. You've just gone from 0-100 in the blink of an eye and done something that, while legally justified, has some social and legal risks to it. Your adrenaline is going to be surging and you may even be hurt without noticing it. Give the responding cops a one sentence statement like, "he/she/it/xe/xhe threatened my life and I was forced to protect myself";, then say "I don't feel so good, I need to go to the hospital".

Officer Snuffy does not want another casualty in his crime scene (especially the prime witness) so you're going to get EMS care and a ride to the ER ASAP. Get your heart rate and blood pressure checked and then let the ER nurses run interference for you. Use that time and privacy to 1) get your head together, 2) call your loved ones and tell them you're okay, and 3) call your attorney. After all that, with your attorney either present or on the phone, talk to the cops (maybe).

I'm recently retired from 30+ years of policing, including 15 years in command ranks. This is basically the advice we had built into our policy for officer involved shootings. It protects the health of the good guy while getting the police a coherent statement of what happened in a fairly timely fashion.

I think this is an excellent suggestion! Thank you very much pmacb, and welcome to the Gun Thread!

******

Next we have a sort of related topic, what steps to take during a traffic stop when you are carrying concealed or otherwise.

I'm certain we'll have two camps on whether or not to disclose you're armed when interacting with the police. Keep in mind, informing the police is a requirement in many states. I have my thoughts on the matter, but what are yours?

And as long as we're talking about guns and cars, how about a video on traveling with your firearm?

******

What's the ammo situation where you are?

******

By popular demand, we have a short video of WeaselDog and Fun Size Joe greeting your 'ol pal Weasel when I come home from work. Where else can you find such enthusiasm for simply showing up?

Danger! Math!

statistics-review scaled small.jpg

I am a big believer in taking measurements and recording observations at the range. Here's an article from Load Data on making sense of the data you collect. Carefully taken measurements of muzzle velocity, for example, can go a long way in accurizing a load.

Anyone else doing this?

******

Here's a good article on ammunition over-penetration from Pew Pew Tactical.

It's an important topic whether you're shooting inside the house, or outside. [h/t redc1c4]

Our pal Dr. Fred send in a pic of a friend's firearm.

Ever heard of a Vulcan Repeating Pistol? Chambered in 44-40, the inventor was apparently a partner of Henry, the maker of rifles.

I had not heard of it before now, but it looks familiar for some reason. Thanks Dr. Fred! Anyone else familiar with this firearm?

NoVaMoMe 2021!!

novamome 1 scaled.jpg

The social and cultural event of the season, NoVaMoMe 2021 went off without a hitch yesterday afternoon and into the evening. The weather cooperated bigly, and mostly everyone who said they would make it, did. We are in the process of arranging bail for the last few revelers and I am happy to report the rescue squad only had to respond once. By any measure, it was a huge success! Please take an opportunity to share your thoughts on your NoVaMoMe experience here tonight. One reminder though; please do not disclose or otherwise make reference to this year's venue! It worked so well, we'd like to use the same place again and will not be able to do so if everyone blabs about where it was. Thank you for understanding, and with that, let's get to the nitty-gritty.

First up, the thank yous!

There is no way we could have done it without you all, so Thank You if you were were able to attend. We're still sorting things out, but I can happily report we were able to add a chunk of change to the bank account for our charities, Toys-for-Tots and Fisher House.

Valuable Prizes on Table

Next, a few of you went way above and beyond with contributions to the event. I am almost certain to miss a few, so my apologies in advance if I do. Please speak up in the comments if I have missed anyone. Anyhoo, a big thanks to Ben Had for buying everyone's first raffle ticket, Jewells45 for donating bracelets and charms, blake for donating three handmade kitchen cutting boards, Muad'dib for donating several containers of homemade maple syrup and also providing the NOOD mugs, Mattski a Horde author for contributing several of his books, Ladyl for contributing a bunch of very nice AoSHQ ball caps, and finally Sharon(willow's apprentice) for a Glock t-shirt, all in addition to the fabulous blog themed gift baskets created by none other than bluebell. Again, if I am forgetting anyone, please forgive me!

Proving once again it takes a Village of Morons to make a MoMe, we'd like to thank our sign-in table volunteers; RedMindBlueState, Boone, Jinx the Cat, Hrothgar, Moonbeam, IrishEi, OpenChannel D, WeaselWoman and McGyver, and also our raffle prize table volunteers; Iris, sharon, Liberty Defender Ladyl, NoLongerintheBellyoftheBeast, Babalu, Ed L. ThiccBoi, rtw366 and Just Wondering. We absolutely could not have done this without you!

Our caterer for the evening did an outstanding job, and the site manager Bruce really made the whole thing look easy. From start to finish it was an absolute pleasure to work with Bruce and his team. We cannot thank you enough!

Also, a big thank you to Chris, with the local Stella Artois beer distributor for providing everyone with a custom engraved beer glass, and a big, big, big thank you to Dennis Wayland for the evening's live music. Dennis is a great guy and has a lot of talent! Seriously, thanks again, Dennis. Very well done!

As many of you know, all of the evening's food was from recipes in the The Deplorable Gourmet and everyone wants to know whose recipes were included, so here 'tis. The numeric reference is to the recipe number in TDG.

Again, please feel free to share your thought on the NoVaMoMe 2021 in the comments below. We're already making plans for next year and hope that you can join us!

15 The volcanics were as they look "pre-henry's"

They were not in 44-40 they were in rocketball ammo.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket_Ball

Rocketball was less powerful than.25 ACP.

The machinist I mentioned above shaved down .40 smith ammo and made a much better weapon nearer a .32 ACP in power.

16 Shot the Marlin 1894 lever action in 45 colt last week. Put the skinner sight on it and it is dead nuts on out to 50 yards. Going to have to take it out to a real range and shoot it at 100 yards and see what it does. Problem is ammo is extremely expensive and does not appear to be coming down or even available cheaply for other than cowboy low velocity lead rounds. The stuff I have was $2.00 a round, I put 30 rounds downrange and spent $60. It is becoming my favorite gun though, it's a blast to shoot.

31 My local gunshop is starting to look like a gunshop again. We've gone from empty walls and glass cases to stuff everywhere. They're getting ammo in consistently too. I still order online and send to my FFL, hopefully the prices will go down enough to not matter. Right now it's $30 no matter how much ammo I get. The downside of no covid lockdown is my range is packed, and they're not taking reservations any longer. FCFS. Oh well, things could be worse.

I installed a new barrel, slide and light trigger on my Glock 19, and put a Talon Grip on. Still has the ergos of a 2x4, but at least I won't be getting splinters. Have yet to try it out.

Posted by: Duke Lowell at July 25, 2021 06:16 PM (kTF2Z)

35 Mister Scott, I think the 1894 is a "stronger" action than the toggle-action in my repro Model 1866, which is chambered in 45 Colt. So I'm limited to conventional 45C pressures (around 15K PSI and below) - you may not be. Which would prove relevant if you want to push the pills out to greater range.

I use my Model 1866 for fun plinking at steel targets, and occasionally for a silhouette match, so the conventional pressure 45C is adequate (though the rams, at 200 yds, sorta kinda just *barely* slowly tip over, if I hit 'em square).

Great caliber, reloading it is easy and versatile. Buying the factory version these days is obviously not fun, but that should change over time.

The MoMe was a blast! The crowd was about like I'd envisioned it, but many individuals were not. Go figure that one out.

The food was wonderful. The people were great (though I didn't get to spend time with everyone). And the location was almost ideal. They even had clean bathrooms! (There were even a couple of people who might have been younger than 29!)

I will say, though, I expected more dancing on tables and such. Nobody was shot or knifed or even thrown out for insulting the cook.

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed my very first MoMe!

51 Our hunt for my recently deceased BIL's carry piece was finally successful after three weeks. It was a real relief that we located it. A very nice PPK. Also found several other nice guns, pistols and long guns both, that I am keeping for his sons. There is yet another gun safe that we will need a locksmith to open, and if I'm right there will be several nice pieces in that, as well. Also found a very substantial supply of ammo in various calibers and gauges. I may make his sons an offer on the ammo.

71 Mister Scott, I think the 1894 is a "stronger"

75 The BRCC thing is pretty irrelevant to me: I have a coffee brand I buy, and BRCC ain't it, and I'm never going to consider buying staples like coffee for ideological reasons (most likely never anyways). But the problem with BRCC's excuses is that it's name just keeps coming up. It's not like this is the first BRCC-hates-conservatives story. So either the company is perpetually unlucky, there is a cabal conspiring to destroy it, or it actually hates conservatives.

Got my very first ragged hole three shot group in 6.5 at 100 yds.
Got witnesses, too. And a pic I might send our host.
Hornady Match 140 HPBT over XY.Z grains of H-4350.
Then went up to the big boy range. I hit the 1106 on my second shot, but I could not get the 850 for the life of me, except for the very last round out of the box.

94 the rocketball ammo for the Volcanic was one of the first self contained cartridges made, and was caseless ammo before that was cool.
I believe that it did not use black powder, but mostly a pellet of mercury fulminate as a propellant. The bullet looked like a hollowed out minee ball with a clay plug holding the pellet in place in the hollowed-out base. The hammer penetrated the plug and detonated the primer material.

it was not a success. It was very important in developing later lever actions I believe.

141 No range time, shamefully. And I have two test loads to try out (just for leading, not performance). Did discover a new gun store close to my cigar shop, though. And restocked the bag-idor (zip lock humidor). And had a nice Nub Connecticut while FaceTiming with my buddy in TX while at the store. This cigar store attracts a very subversive, extremist crowd. Almost fun to hear how others also cannot believe what they're seeing in the country.

Primary takeaway: .32 ACP hollow point isn't worth it. Just go with the ball ammo.

I'll let hogmartin, Eromero, and Rancher Bob wax prolific about their prowess on the range, my performance was, um. Lackluster. Yeah, that's what it was. Lackluster. Embarrasing really.

Until Eromero let me shoot his 1911. Ot is very similar to the sr1911 i carry. Very nice weapon. It allowed me a nice shot group from maybe 7 yards.

I also got to take a shot or three with Eromero's new red dot on his ar15, at the 10o yard lane. One went somewhere, i dont think i was even on the paper, the other two were maybe 4" apart. Nice weapon, not sure i want a red dot anymore though. I guess I'm habitualized to an old school iron site.

The "present your CCW license" is a fairly recent thing I've read some people discussing. Apparently there's some concern - based on an incident, I suspect - that a cop that is having a bad day can get your CCW permit pulled if you don't.

YMMV.

Still, very much a duty to inform. See Mike Hammer at #173. His experiences are very similar to mine.

If you go to USCCA site they have. Reciprocity map and a duty to inform map but they are different pages.

So recently I travelled through SC with my concealed carry and was stopped by a sheriff on revenue duty on the interstate. I did not inform him I was carrying as I figured that would unnecessarily complicate our discussion. But later (after discussion here in the gub thread!) I looked it up and SC is a duty to inform state. So it could have gone badly.

Posted by: NaCly Dog (u82oZ) at July 25, 2021 07:10 PM (u82oZ)

231 Some states have carry permission on the driver's license, some have it in a database, and some do not have a centralized database. Some states require informing officers upon a stop that you are carrying, some do not.

There is an annual edition of the Gun Laws of the 50 States that is not that costly and very useful to avoid problems when you travel. https://tinyurl.com/mye5rm7p You can also find some of the info via an online website for example this: https://tinyurl.com/3pjsjabk or state level carry groups for particular states.

Make sure that you know the prohibited places in each state and also if traveling in some states, you may need to alter your ammo selection or ship the firearms ahead of you via FFL.

My firearm, which looked suspiciously looked like a G17 but was not a G17, I cleared and let everybody fondle and lust after, but it was not fired. Because zombie likely between ranch and home. 240 Oh, btw, be very careful about hauling long arms around loaded, both from a safety perspective and from a legal perspective. A large number of states allow loaded pistols to be carried in vehicles but are not so friendly as to loaded long arms.

For the few of you with NFA category arms, you have special procedures for going out of state with them but you should already know those anyway.

242 As for the ammo situation, it's mixed. Stuff is in the stores, but mostly rifle caliber. Pistol ammo is almost random in terms of what's on the shelf.

Since I last posted here, I added 9mm Steyr my collection. You know, it is *almost* the same as 9mm Largo, but not quite. Fascinating how that worked out.

Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at July 25, 2021 07:13 PM (llXky)

243 NC and some other South East states have always had some squirrely laws about CCW. "One was the rule about no carry in a "place that charges admission". I won't get into the reason they made them so complicated but you can guess them. I recall when Virginia was pretty clean on CCW. I still think they haven't changed the state laws in a major way though the cities and municipalities can run roughshod. That is a recent thing, like in the last three years.

In VA, last i checked there is no duty to inform. I know they can tell from you license plate so they know. I was only pulled over once and I mentioned I had a CCW. The cop nodded I think and that was it.

I recall when they finally got CCW in Ohio they made a real stink about this. As I recall, you could get in actual trouble for not informing immediately. That Ohio stuff was weird for the first few years.

247 Ammo Overpenetration article: If I remember correctly, "Mythbusters" did an episode (second to last season?) called "Shooting Through Walls." The myth tested was whether a hitman could hit his target by shooting through a wall. Using a Beretta 92 (M9 pistol), the Mythbusters shot 9mm full metal jacket ammo at a representative variety of stand ins for walls (lathe and plaster, drywall...) and things embedded in walls (electrical boxes, plumbing conduits) to see if they could hit a steel target behind the "wall." Not surprisingly, 9mm FMJ went through everything easily. Only a direct hit on an electrical box or piping stopped the bullet from going through to hit the steel beyond.

I'll say this: it's a snappy, potent round. I understand its enduring popularity as a close-quarters round. The guns that use it are very compact and quite controllable with one hand. We had some cardboard packing tubes and the .32 was punching through just as well as the .38 Special. Slightly smaller holes but not that smaller - and you got more holes for the same size and weight.

Base gate sentries used to ask stuff like 'Any weapons?' and I'd always said 'Nope.' because all I carried were specialized tools. Since all I need to do on a military base is renew Mrs. E's ID, I think you for your up to date info.

294 266 Cheapest backstop is a bookshelf loaded with books.
Those stop a surprising variety of rounds. You can also fairly easily
make clearing barrels for a home range that will handle most handgun
rounds.

I run that round through my 1938 walther ppk. It was a war trophy that my dad horse traded someone for in return for a quad/sid-by-side mechanical repair about ten years ago. Great weapon, excellemt ammo. I've traced the serial number of the ppk to a known bulk unit issue to the german army military police in 1938.

I have only started learning about guns and shooting since January, so my question for those who have years of experience: does the summer usually offer more distractions or does range time move to the outdoors?

337 Best are the phone books of yore or other reference books that have many thin pages and massive binding. A bookcase filled with paperbacks are not the best stopper but if in an apartment are better than a lot of other choices. Use the longitudinal side and obviously air spaces around the books are not conducive to stopping a bullet. You can upgrade their protection value at a slight cost using sheet metal.

Some of the other better stoppers of bullets and fragments come from highway tires.

374 JTB, I load for my M1s (HXP is just about gone), and it's not hard, just a bit laborious to cranking out range fodder for handguns (which is most of my reloading).

Brass prep. Seems like house painting - about 80% of the work is prep, in this case brass prep. But you may already know all this. I've got a few hundred more twice-fired cases (deprimed, resized) to inspect and gauge before putting them away. Shooting remaining HXP, and my own reloads in once-fired HXP cases now.

376 Yes, .32 ACP is a very good caliber.

Posted by: callsign claymore at July 25, 2021 07:39 PM (mqMR+)

---
All the people ripping on .32 as a "mouse gun" caliber are ignoring the fact that their patron saint of .45 ACP *also* designed the .32. John Browning knew what he was doing.

Six months ago, I picked up a ridiculously cheap Yugoslav .32 as a practice gun and it has not failed me in any way. Indeed, I've developed a deeper appreciation for the caliber and the many fine weapons chambered in it. If not for recurring, yet strangely unavoidable canoe accidents, I'd have quite the collection by now.

380 339 Weasel, regarding the pmacb suggestion. I suspect that it is usual procedure for police shootings, opinions vary from what I've read for civilians. Obviously, you should check yourself or loved ones for injuries after a confrontation and if injured then the ambulance is the way to go. Sometimes adrenalin from the fight or flight rush can act to conceal the pain of injury.

Older people with medical issues should also be checked out. But then that leaves people who are not injured where opinions vary. Some hold that if nothing is found wrong with you that it could hurt your case. Others do not. What you do need to do is make sure that all cuts, bruises, etc. are thoroughly documented either by the officers on scene or the medical staff. This was important documentation of Zimmerman's head injuries that helped his self defense claims of being injured by Martin.

391 After a panic and shortage, normal pattern is, first, return of some supply (not much and at exorbitant prices), followed by more supply, with the start of a long softening in prices, until there is a new "normal" equilibrium.

Judging just by a few datapoints, I'd say that for ammo, we're well into the reappearance of supply/still high prices phase, though the price softening has begun.

394 Nurse,
Regarding your vehicle being surrounded. There are some evasive driving classes designed for executives going out of country to troubled areas that might be regrettably necessary in the near future.

To give room to maneuver at stoplights, always stop leave enough space to see the bottom of the tires of the vehicle in front of you and preferably be in the rh lane if in a dangerous area so you can cut off road. Left turn lanes are similar but a bit more risky to drive into oncoming traffic. Middle lanes are to be avoided.

I think in the extended NoVA area that information is shared with the District of Columbia for sure, and possibly with MD.
The one time I was pulled over in VA, the officer ran the plates and asked if I had weapons in the car, when I said "No!" which was true at that time, he went on to ticket me for other reasons, but gave the lowest form of speeding ticket possible!

402 But the high prices for private sale firearms, judging only by one region, have not really begun to change. One almost always sees good deals/mispriced guns on sale by private parties, but those have sort of disappeared. Not permanent I'm sure.

405 386 Weasel, from a tactical viewpoint, it would be advisable. The legal issue is that the reasonable use of force will have a court look at the whole record of the encounter and one of those issues is the credibility of the person who shot. A lot of thugs try to claim self defense due to jail house law school and that has poisoned the well in many urban areas for making these claims.

If you know the area, avoid the likely places of trouble. Some of you will remember a video last year of a guy waving a rifle in Lansing. Wax protects the firearm if you use something like Renaissance wax and it is quite common for antiques or expensive collector firearms to be waxed as a preservative from oxidation (rust).

Oil eventually either seeps off or evaporates so it needs to be reapplied on a regular basis.

450 Eromeo,
Yes if you are telling the truth. BP over 200 is stroke possibility and usually a result of an existing problem. Shock and trembling are others. It gets complicated to admit medical evidence due to privilege in most states.

Nurse, one additional item might be a gps mapping unit that has traffic feeds or listening to traffic radio. Obviously, the best way to avoid a jam is to divert before you get to it.

The bear spray can be useful but beware of it being blown back into the vehicle with you. Might want to consider a stun gun as well or a self defense type knife (DTI makes a short knive 2.5 in blade that is roughly the size of a j frame revolver handle and is angled for retention. Slicing someone's tendons will tend to make a grabbing arm useless.

An existing record of health issues is always useful as there is a hearsay exception for statements made to medical personnel for the purpose of medical treatment. Makes it easier to get the evidence in. In your case, definitely call an ambulance as stress like in a self defense shooting could lead to some medical issues. Same as diabetes documentation can help if taken for a ride downtown for questioning.

It's an interesting thought. I would think that it might sound suspiciously legalistic for *some* folks. If you are not the sort to be made distraught by dropping a bad guy, requesting it might make an official suspicious. If you are not that cool afterward, it would make for a good tactical retreat, I think.

Sad, though - in the last year, there have been lots of pretty shocking video clips of assaults in public, broad daylight, and the feature of some of them was the lack of much reaction by bystanders. Possibly not a fair test, might have been handgun-level protection only, but after the last stage we put some of it against the berm and they shot their ARs through it, and I blasted big holes through it with my Mosin. Was not reassuring.

542 Right, the Genovese incident, has pretty much been debunked, or at least the import of it, as inaccurately reported, has been debunked.

Sad, though - in the last year, there have been lots of pretty shocking video clips of assaults in public, broad daylight, and the feature of some of them was the lack of much reaction by bystanders. I find it very plausible that the falsely reported phenomenon all those decades ago is now a *real* one.

Oh, no question. The advent of video evidence, until the deep fakes become problematic, is a game changer.

South NY, MN, and MA yes. Some Western PA too, the bad part. A lot of home grown too, they don't care what state they are in. In some ways they don't think they live in a state. 548 Firearms usage at a riot are always a chancy thing legally if the local powers (cops and DA) decide to make an example out of you.

To a certain degree, that is why stand your ground laws came about in jurisdiction is that it permits the person to defend themselves without retreat as long as they are obeying the law at the time of the confrontation.

Essentially though Rittenhouse has three separate incidents that under the law are treated as separate conflicts under the law. It is complicated enough with one situation but he has at least three separate uses of self defense with the various attackers.

549 "The proper response was to take alternate routes away from those areas."

Also a good idea to check your routes to get some map awareness before a road trip. I was raised in Texas and found Maryland highways to be stupid.

For example, Maryland's I-95 North has an exit marked "Gas 2 miles -> ". Turns out it's 2 miles with no U-turn through a ghetto area. Last place you want to risk low fuel.

Most of you who served know how important map awareness is. So take the time those skills to your civilian life. Some of these places are just looking for Whitey with out of state plates.

566 555 Hrothgar,
It does indeed. At some point, the pendulum will swing back but one of the difficulties for the defense in the case is that it will be difficult to introduce past bad acts of the people that Rittenhouse shot because he would not know their past violent acts.

Self defense has to be evaluated on what the defendant knew at the time and whether his use of force was proportionate and reasonable to stopping the threat. Reasonable will be defined by WI law and the jury.

567 I've heard both sets of advice. One side says hand the officer your DL, reg and you CCP.

Another says don't mention you're armed unless they specifically ask.

Personally, if pulled over, I have all three ready but only hand over two until they ask then I hand over the ccp, hands on the wheel and politely tell the officer where the handgun is at in the car.

568 Concerning avoiding trouble while driving, especially in a strange city. I don't depend on GPS. We always have paper maps from AAA in the car. They are reasonably up to date, can't be disrupted in any fashion, and let us plan our route ahead of time.

The other part is I no longer drive in big cities. We're at the point where we don't have to and just avoid them. I would rather drive a couple of hours out of my way than go through a city.

571 565 Perhaps, but if the jury decides in the first confrontation that Rittenhouse did not act reasonably, then the second confrontation legally could be people that were pursuing a fleeing felon.

This is a very complicated case as even police officers would rarely as an individual shoot three people. I am pretty sure that Andrew Branca will do his day by day blog posting on the future trial and his take would be useful.

I thought it was much simpler. Some many who serve come from families who served, it is a tradition. I am not denying what you say because i did not experience it. But what I recall is those who serve today are a very small fraternity a tiny percentage of the overall population. And the main catalyst is their parents, grand parents, or other relatives served as well.

I once read an article written by a CCL holder from Florida who was on vacay with the family up the east coast. He knew he would be travelling through enemy territory, and chose NOT to carry.

Maryland Troopers were scanning plates of northbound traffic from the median, and he popped up as a CCL holder. They pulled him over in basically felony-stop mode, got everyone out of the vehicle sitting on the side of the busy highway, and tore his van APART looking for a gun. He didn't have it ! They left him, with luggage strewn all over the shoulder, kids and wife crying. Vacation Ruined. Don't be Maryland.
