Classic Steve Inman -- Cone 2 the Dome.

Advanced Karening. Don't try this at home.

Granny law.

Dogs arguing about who gets the bone.

Little bunny is stuck in an empty=swimming-pool-type area in a skate park, but a skateboarder helps her out.

Runaway tortoise reunited with owner after having been missing for a year.

Where did the tortoise escape to?

Well, over the course of a year, he managed to flee a half mile away from his home.

A UK man has been reunited with his beloved tortoise who went missing a year ago -- after he was found in a field just over a half-mile away, the Telegraph reported.

The 14-year-old reptilian slowpoke named Maxi scaled a 12-inch-high fence in Coombe Bissett, Wiltshire, in August 2020 and embarked on his epic journey -- at an average speed of 0.00007 mph.

The getaway:

I seem to remember a lot of spreader events in the first go round involving political actors as well.

But if all the spreading of these Typhoid Texans happened in DC and none in Texas, doesn't that make it likely that the infection came TO them rather than FROM them?

27 On that Blue Angels "over/under" photo, the trick they use is that one flies down the right edge of the runway, and the other flies down the left edge. Keeps the wingtips about 40' apart. But from the crowd viewing area, it looks like they're damn near right on top of one another.

Bonus. Those are the newer F/A-18 Super Hornets, now in their first year of Blue Angels service. They've replaced the ancient F/A-18As that the 'Angels have flown for long over a decade, till now.

I'm going to have to make a point of taking in a Blue Angels show, just to see the Super Hornet in action.

The landing gear is out on both aircraft to get a slower plane, for more visibility among the audience. Harder to control, unless you are a good pilot. Looks more dramatic, too.

Perhaps, but see Jim's explanation...I know at a lower altitude, 1000 and below, you'd want the drag to keep stable, but you'd never fly this close in a formation at altitude with you wheels down. You'd snap them off killing yourself and someone on your team.

This would not require WH staffers to claim infection.

67 Actually, 'bout any Naval tactical jet could go supersonic with the gear down, and not lose the gear.

Landing Gear DOORS now, well.. say bye-bye to those at around 250~275 kts. But those gear are super, insanely robust, given that they're built to take the slam of a 50,000lb. aircraft, approaching the deck at a 4 degree angle, and which does NOT "flare" to soften the impact of landing. 4 degrees, forward airspeed of 160 or so, and slammed onto the deck, hopefully catching one of the four arresting cables across the deck. BIG impact, each and every "landing".

No way.

All operational speeds are verified in test with a conformed test article, ie. flight test aircraft in every valid configuration pertinent to the speeds. This is done on by spec with each military contract and with civil to show compliance with regulation. All operational speeds are also verified by analysis with the forces factored by applicable values, like for a gear door witch could likely cause a catastrophic failure if it were to depart a factor of 1.5.

Optical compression from the Telephoto Lens effect. It's a real thing, and any first-year photography student will have learned not only what it was, but how to use it, and manipulate the camera's settings to either minimize it or exaggerate it. All depends on what result is sought.

In this case, the result is making it appear that the planes are much closer than they actually are, and hence, the photographer was successful in his or her quest.

By your nick, you ought to be familiar with it. Aetius was stabbed by the useless Valentinian III once he thought he could afford it due to Atilla's death. Aetius had repelled Atilla from the empire before that. Someone took umbrage to that and killed him, and the next conspirator to Aetius' killing that took over insulted the Vandal king who sailed right over and sacked Rome for the second time.

And that's the high point of the next few decades.

164 Even flutter envelope speeds are tested in flight. Flutter is when a flexible aerodynamic structure feeds off the energy in the atmosphere fed to it by velocity and it becomes explosively divergent. In essence, your aircraft explodes just from flying. This is bad. Regulation specifies no aircraft structure may ever flutter. And this must be shown by analysis and test. So test pilots fly their aircraft up to the very edge in which their aircraft will explode, kiss it, then slow back down. They will do this over a range of altitudes, even if they have to put the plane into steep dives just to get there. And just to make sure things are dangerous as friggen possible, something called a flutter exciter is mounted on the structure to try to get it to flutter and explode.

Now there's a ground crew that monitors, via accelerometers, and magical incantations how well the aircraft is damping out the energy. But it is real seat of the pants, sweat beads on forehead, white knuckles stuff.

Also, see Vmc testing, minimum control speeds. You often have to find those by feeling around stall. Also tricky. But all that is done for every aircraft made.

Oh you mean THAT gain of function? yeah we did do that. But we didn't CREATE the virus and I strongly resent your implication that I did. Yes, every aircraft can flutter and explode. But none are ever allowed to fly past their flutter envelope. And there are margins, too. But here's the thing. As aircraft become lighter, more efficient they must become more flexible. What does not bend will break. You should see the tip extension of really large, high wing-loaded aircraft. It is of the order of tens of feet of flex. And because of that and other design decisions, flutter speeds have started to move downward. Now, this need not be the case. You can design lightweight, efficient aerodynamic structures that manage their flutter speeds. But it is an increasing issue worldwide in aerospace. Light, efficient, aero-servo-mechanic elastically stable structures are a primary topic in every symposium and conference that hasn't devolved into woke deconstructionist crap.

And the lessons from the F-111's always-cracking wing-box were applied to the F-14 program, with sterling results. Frankly, a modernized F-111 would be one hell of an add to the airfleet. I read once that the only good thing about the F111 program was that the damnfool Russians copied it.

It used to be that if you wanted to test outlandish things, you built a prototype and found out if it worked, rather than spend tons of money for a fighter that couldnt go very fast or turn, and then call it a bomber that couldnt carry much in the way of bombs.

293 The Tamiya F-4B Phantom II that just came out is getting pretty good reviews. If you want to pay $100 or so for the kit. The decal sheet has markings for three birds; one each from VF-51, VF-111, and VF-161.

The VF-51 Screaming Eagles plane is a CAG bird so very colorful. NL-100. On the markings placement sheet that Tamiya provides there is an interesting omission for this plane. The Zotz 1/32 decal sheet for Phantom MiG Killers has this plane also and on the left intake are four red flags with yellow stars. The Tamiya sheet does not show these four flags, but on the decal sheet the flags are there.

The other two planes that have markings in the box are both MiG killers.

304 293 The Tamiya F-4B Phantom II that just came out is getting pretty good reviews.

305 You talk about harmonics and vibrations, that is what brought down the first F-14 Tomcat prototype on the second test flight. A couple of loose pipes cracked and that resulted in the loss of hydraulics. The emergency system got the Turkey almost home before failing. The crew punched out safely.

Grumman dug out the wing box which was almost completely undamaged and used it as a test rig from then on.

Posted by: Anna Puma at July 20, 2021 08:57 PM (ZhmX5)

306 Suffice to say, the F-111 platform was still in use a couple years ago with both the RAF and the RAAF in (mostly) EW and RECON configurations.

Not so much with the Tomcat.

Better yet, during the Apollo 13 mission, those guys had to improvise solution after solution for 3 days using nothing but whatever was available inside a doomed command module.

Truly heroes. Guys like that will never exist again. They were replaced first by bureaucrats, then social justice warriors, and now Marxists.

Posted by: Federal Agent #1 at July 20, 2021 08:58 PM (8W1PW)

310 Anna Puma, you're making me nostalgic for my 13-year-old self's model airplane obsession.

I completed: P40 Tigershark, F4U Corsair, P38 Lightning, Messerschmidt BF109, some variation of the Mustang, and the Spitfire, the B-25 Mitchell...a Focke-Wulf FW190; some sort of American divebomber, can't remember which one...I'm forgetting about 6 or 7 more, I know.

Some of them were pretty well-done. I wonder whatever happened to those things.

314 Saw those F-4's at an airshow. Made more noise and smoke than a B-52. The things you got to do to make a brick fly.

They used to fly over Grandma's house in B'ham all the time. What a howl those engines make at approach speed. Almost hurts.

317 Oldcat. The '111 was indeed, McNamara's Folly.

But as with many a misfit program, eventually the engineers and builders figured out ways to solve a helluva lot of problems. In the end, the Aardvark was still one of the best EW and Recon aircraft going. A modern version, (new mfg., not boneyard recycles), might allow for even greater "GAINZ" over the old limitations. You're exactly right on the fact that it was NEVER a "fighter", and was mis-sold as such to a gullible SecDef and Congress. And the concept of that airframe was far ahead of the engineering, electronics and weapons systems of that time. Pity, cause it was damn good at it's peak, and was a heavy hitter in the First Gulf War.

319 The problem with the F-111 arose with the Air Force calling it a TFX - Tactical Fighter eXperimental. Robert McNamara saw the word 'Fighter' and no matter how much the USAF or USN tried to tell him he was wrong the F-111 would be bi-service. Or else.

The first Chinese carrier, Laioning, is a rebuilt Kuznetsov. The second China carrier is a copy, the Shandong(sp?). They have two more under construction, rumored to be catapult and arrested landing, or a regular style carrier, about 60,000 - 65,000 tons.

Meanwhile HMS Queen Elizabeth is in the Indian Ocean, first British carrier East of Suez in 50 years.

334 Back in the early days of jet fighters I had a distant cousin, who had the same 3 names as I do, who was killed in an accident involving another fighter. The other fighter was having problems with its landing gear and my cousin flew underneath it, trying to see if he could spot the problem. Bernoulli effect slammed the two planes into each other, and both planes crashed with the loss of all hands.

337 None of McNamara's decisions make any sense, until you realize the man was a psychopathic mass murderer who wanted to see how many people he could get away with murdering. Once you understand that, the entire war in Vietnam snaps into focus and makes sense.

Every time I pick up a turtle in the road and place it in the direction it's going on the other side of the road, I do not go home and get on social media to see if anyone was missing a turtle? My mind is stumbling around trying to understand what would possess a person to even go there? Is there a turtle club nearby or what? You find a turtle in the wild and you NATURALLY think someone owns it?
