Dogs have evolved to understand most of human actions and some of human language. I saw a documentary state that dogs are the only animal who will follow a human's gaze. That is, when you look at something, a dog will look at your eyes and then look where you are looking. No other animal can do that.
I think maybe there might be one other animal that can do it as well? But I cannot remember what it is. Posted by: buzzion at July 19, 2021 06:52 PM (vMCab) 5

People reacting badly to covid nasal swabs.
** Speaking of, have any of our medical folks examined a swab under a microscope? There was an article going around recently from somewhere in Europe where people were saying there were manmade materials and chemical in the swab that shouldn't be there for a sample, but that could be there for something else. Hydrogel or something similar. Interestingly, I think whatever the compound was grew like a mofo when left alone but reacted poorly to Ivermectin in a petri dish. Speaking of which, I was stoked that when I checked to see if the local library system had "The Secret Horsepower Race", new book about aviation engines in WWII (krauts v. Allies), it was "ordered", and I was *first* in line when I put a hold on it. Sounds like a book you will devour - and you'll get a lot more out of it than I will, given your knowledge of the subject. Heard a podcast with the author, very impressed - he digitized most of the German records (from the Air Ministry) of things like meetings, etc., so he has quite the portrait of the inner story not just on the Allied side but the enemy's, too. I think horses instinctively understand what humans expect.
If you ride a horse, they will largely go wherever you are looking and following your body lean. Also they grow to understand verbal cues, not only from the rider, but also the environment. My daughter had a horse that had become "ring sour", and by that I mean that it had shown in so many horse shows that it would hear the ring announcer call to the riders to change the gate of the horse and the horse would do so without being prompted by my daughter. This sounds great, but the judges count off for it because the horse is supposed to respond to the riders' command. They actually used to stuff the horse's ears with cotton balls so it couldn't hear the ring announcer. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at July 19, 2021 07:18 PM (5We2S) 85

But my suspicion is that this "spike" in infections is a fraction of the last spikes from November and last summer. I'd also be interested to know how many are being hospitalized compared to last year. I think this is just the expected result of finally letting people interact with each other after using a vaccine that wasn't going to make must of a different in the first place. "Cases" are literally of zero importance, other than for providing datapoints to estimate total infections and thus Infection Fatality Rate.
Remember "cases" with C19 are defined as no other ILI has ever been. Not presentation to a medical facility where symptomatic infection is confirmed. That's probably a small % of the "cases" here. It's a number just generated by tests, mostly of asymptomatic people. Actually, though I sense there's chaos in terms of uniformity for things like PCR cycles, making the data somewhat less useful, the "cases" data over the last year+ should allow for a better estimate of the IFR. Now - besides making the infection #s usable, they'll have to do a very hard scrub on the fatality #s. That is, if any meaningful analysis is to be done (I crack myself up!). That reminds me of North American trying to get the P-82 Mustang to work with Allison V-1710 engines after USAAF directed them to ditch the Packard license built Rolls-Royce V-1650-7 Merlin engines because each engine cost them a royalty fee. Well the late model V-1710 had an issue where the oil would literally turn into a froth. As a stop-gap they installed from the Merlin its oil bubble remover and solved the problem. The point Schlichter is making is that if it isn't Trump it will be someone else. The majority of the country is ready to back a strong populist. do the people meekly accept it (as they so far have done with the phony 2020 elections)
------------ My argument (and I know many disagree, that is fine) is that people haven't accepted it. I am seeing the pushback in some of the data samples in small ways, such as the special election in PA a few months back. Right now what people can do, because it is what has always worked in the past, is to prepare to "throw the bums out" in the next election. There is a pretty hard surge in voting intentions for the next election. Now if the next go round, the result is voting in more failure theater, I have no idea what happens in 2024. But I do know that the Dems are trying everything they can to get control of the state election systems. They are not acting like they are in control. Personally, I would like to see some serious unrest like the marches in the UK and France. But that hasn't been part of the American political makeup for at least 50 years. The Romanian revolution was triggered December 16th when a Protestant Hungarian minister Lazlo Tokes was evicted from his apartment in Timisoara. That lead to rioting by the Hungarian minority joined by the Romanians. They were massacred on the 18th. Then Ceausescu started giving a speech and people started booing. That was in December 21st. He was shot on Christmas.

Grump, you are a great American.
And actually, with a prevalent virus (and this one is way way past prevalence, as defined for epidemiology, to likely endemic), moving people around, such as illegal aliens being shipped all over, doesn't really matter. Which is another illustration of why all these policies, interventions, lockdowns, mandates, etc have likely had *zero* effect. Things don't work that way. Not for a prevalent, highly infectious respiratory virus. The "spikes" and dips etc usually have a seasonal and regional character (Hope-Simpson analysis). So if Area A is going to have a "spike" in "cases" in October, they're going to have it whether or not the 87 fake asylees who weren't even issued a court summons are "resettled" there now. Only thing that affects the situation like this with a highly infectious critter is immunization (vaccines), or therapies/treatments to reduce hospitalizations and mortality. This is not new, this is logical and based on a century of observation and scientific research. Posted by: rhomboid (OTzUX) at July 19, 2021 08:32 PM (OTzUX) 315

So, from earlier, apparently No Serious Economist is predicting inflation. I'll actually give Slow Joe the benefit of the doubt--that's probably true. But it should be noted that No Serious Economist said that Enron would collapse, or that the subprime mortgage spree was a bad idea. Nay, sir, we're in a new reality and this shiny new thing cooked up by the Serious Economists' college friends who went corporate is totally the bee's knees. Also, No Serious Economist predicted that Bitcoin would last more than a few months before all the silly kids come running back to the warm, paternal, and not at all creepy embrace of the central banking system.
Seems like these guys maybe aren't the best bellwether of what's going to happen, yeah? Or...maybe they are, but they're pumping bullshit for the said college friends who always seem to cash in their chips right before it all goes to shit. Posted by: CppThis at July 19, 2021 08:40 PM (8h1h1) 334

Posted by: vmom The same as for horses and other animals on a per-pound basis. The stuff I bought had it marked off in 50 lb. increments. Posted by: t-bird at July 19, 2021 08:58 PM (vOGqy) 374

Doggone! I had corn on the cob for dinner, and now the cat is harvesting partly-eaten kernels off the cob.

It's hard but fun to imagine some of these people if they had survived. Imagine a wrinkly fat bald Jim Morrison, resembling David Crosby, croaking thru "Light My Fire" on a "Legends of the 60s" tour. And just try to picture Kurt Cobain in his 50s. And Jimi standing around with Clapton and Knopfler playing covers medleys at awards shows.

The second real news about the Iran kidnap plot is that the US announced it. The FBI (spit) even has a "wanted" thing out for the 4 alleged would-be perps.
Clearly a glitch in the system! But not to worry, the geniuses higher up the chain, who are masterminding the catastrophic rescue of the Tehran regime, called this plot "disturbing". Negotiating a nuke deal with a genocidal theocratic dictatorship that is a bloody enemy of the US and many of our allies and partners. Obviously such a noble project cannot be derailed by trifles such as, say, acts of war on US soil. Posted by: rhomboid (OTzUX) at July 19, 2021 09:01 PM (OTzUX) 380

"Dogs have evolved to understand most of human actions and some of human language. I saw a documentary state that dogs are the only animal who will follow a human's gaze. That is, when you look at something, a dog will look at your eyes and then look where you are looking. No other animal can do that."
Wrong. Cats absolutely do that. They might need a bit of practice and training but they absolutely are capable of it. It's something I do regularly with mine. Posted by: rold at July 20, 2021 03:20 AM (Fntzm) Processing 0.04, elapsed 0.0549 seconds. |
