A Man, A Plan, A Canal, ONT!

Howdy folks! Welcome to the ONT. Sorry to say it's going to be a short one, but I think I can dig up some cool stuff for y'all to talk about.

che shirt.jpg

Let's Eat!

I found this earlier this week. Fast Food Chains Tier List Maker

It allows you to rate the various fast food chains into tiers of excellence. Go try it for yourself, come back here and share what you came up with. Meanwhile, here is the correct hierarchy:

Fast Food.jpg

Speaking Of Fast Food

I've got Subway pretty high on my list because I like their sandwiches. Maybe I should move them down. Lab analysis of Subway's tuna sandwiches fails to identify tuna DNA

The tests prove that the ‘tuna’ is actually a ‘mixture of various concoctions that do not constitute tuna, yet have been blended together by [Subway] to imitate the appearance of tuna,’ according to the complaint.
The complaint does not specify what the lab tests revealed or what the tuna is actually made of.

I know people are avoiding tuna out of concern that it's high in mercury, I did not know that you should be concerned that it's low in tuna.

Living In America

So, US News and World Report is out with their annual list of the best places to live in the US, and it's a hoot. San Francisco is number 15, boasting vibrant open air latrines and a sky-high crime rate. Portland is number 10.

U.S. residents view Portland as a highly desirable place to live, with the city ranking No. 5 in that category, behind Colorado Springs, Colorado; Honolulu; Los Angeles; and San Francisco, which are tied for the top spot. Additionally, a relatively strong job market and consistent growth in population due to net migration over a five-year period are behind the Rose City’s No. 10 rank.

Really?

They didn't say if the net migration was in or out. I know which way I'm betting.

History, Oversimplified

There's a whole series of these on YouTube.

I think these are great. So what if they are pretty basic and, well, oversimplified? Anything that gets kids today interested in history is OK in my book. If you want in-depth, there are oodles of videos that will give you a 2 hour drill down on the rivet patterns of the B-25 (and Anna Puma probably wrote most of them)., but before someone would be interested in them, they have to be interested in history in the first place.

The Greatest History Video Of Them All

I think this actually predates YouTube. It's still the best thing on it.

These guys did others, like JFK, but nothing will ever top the above.

Guy's A Genius

Winner Of French Scrabble Title Does Not Speak French

How did he win then? Oh, he simply memorized the French Scrabble dictionary. He's a got a freaky ability for Scrabble.

Europe United

So, there was a big kickball tournament in Europe this week, and England was in the championship. The Brits were all excited singing about “bringing the championship “home”” (even though they've never won it before). Since everybody just loves the British soccer hooligan (they're so cute and playful!), when Italy beat them the rest of the continent has been unmerciful.

74 Thing about Whataburger, is that you *must* enjoy it there in the store. Their buns don't travel worth a damn, even to a hotel room two blocks away. In the restaurant, they're nice, toasted buns with just a bit of fluff to 'em. 5 minutes in a 1/4 traffic back to the room, and they've deflated flatter than where Brie Larsen's ass was supposed to be. Whataburger's flavor though, is great. Pro-tip. Best Whataburger breakfast. Taquito with sausage, egg & cheese. Trust me on this, they use their own sausage (also sold under their brand at H.E.B. grocery stores) The Taquito, RULES!

I really think it depends on the crust. Domino's pan crust or hand-tossed has a decent flavor and texture. Their standard crust is only marginally better than Papa John's. A good crust can make or break a pizza regardless of the toppings. NONE of the listed fast-food pizza joints can compare to a local pizzeria in my opinion.

A place near me called The Green Truck is good if you're ever in Savannah and want a good burger. There was a good place in Oakville ON down on lakeshore called The Works with a big menu of funny theme burgers. But if you don't go crazy with the topping you can get a good decent burger there.

480 No particularly interesting or unusual guns at the range today, except maybe a Rashid, but I didn't get the chance to examine it closely or shoot it. Kind of an SKS with a triangular vs. round rear receiver. Owner said they're rare. He had a Hakim, too.

But I had to take some shooters to another range, so couldn't linger and learn. These other groups had some amusing features.

Young, brand new minted sheriff's deputy had his uncle there, they were mostly shooting the kid's Glock. Then the deputy pulls out a Model 29. I told him that under club rules, he'd have to recite Dirty Harry's famous movie-ending line before shooting it. He knew it! Was amazed for a yute of his tender age. He also had ammo he'd inherited from his dad - Remington 45ACP, 230g FMJ, standard stuff - production date on the boxes: April 1941. Duds. Lots of - mostly - duds. He, his grandson, and the other two guys sharing the small bench fired at least 30 or 40, in 3 different 1911s.

All had strong firing pin dimples on the primers. All duds. Boxes show now water damage at all. Have never heard of primers going, only powder. Cases were fine, no patina or corrosion of any kind, just dull.'

Gonna disassemble a few and see what I see.

truth be told, every location of a fast food place is different really, because management can make a huge impact on food quality.

Thats where pizza kicks ass, and if you don't want that those places usually make a killer cheese steak and meatball parm, and it costs less than mcdonalds.

526 Fast food is highly dependent on local quality control (except for McDonald's, where they are all exactly equally bad), so it's hard to judge entire chains. In my area, the best are Five Guys and Carl's Jr., with the local Burger King being not bad at all. I used to like In-N-Out when on business trips, although it was mostly their burgers, as the fries always tasted like styrofoam. And Chick-fil-A is just bland and boring to me. On the other hand, I eat fast food approximately three times a year these days, so what the heck do I know anymore? Wait, I forgot Jersey Mike's. Excellent subs (No. 13, Mike's Way), which we get about six times a year (from one location), which is so good I almost forgot it was a fast food place.

Fuddruckers still exist, barely. Luby's bought 'em, then went bankrupt. Spun off the subsidary, and a few are still hanging on. I used to dine at the original Fuddruckers, 'bout 6 blocks from San Antonio Intl. Airport. They used to butcher sides of beef (behind glass) in full view. Sell choice cuts, and grind burgers, again, all in full view. Buns, baked on site as well.

Similarly, ate often at the original Taco Cabana. Blanco at Hildebrand, San Antonio. Old converted gas station. Food still tastes the same, portions have SHRUNK, some quality diminished, but most remains good. Family Feud "Taco Fiesta" nearly destroyed 'em in the early '80s. TC vanquished TF, both in sales and in court.

There was a car show at a CFA that I went to so I figured I would try it and ordered a chicken sandwich. Damn it was good. Dan Foley started it in Wichita and a relative started another place called Taco Grande. Taco Tico by me in Wichita was great. And they were one of the last places to have a few tabletop arcade games. The company was getting big and spreading out to other states. Dan Foley sold the outfit to ex-KFC dude and he changed the freshly prepared taco meat to "substance from tubes". It pissed everyone off and people stopped going. They eventually went back to the old recipe but that was the start of the decline. Then they came up with a new business idea, "let's see what happens if we stop paying our state sales taxes". That didn't seem to work out too swell and they went bankrupt.

But they were great at the beginning. 100 times better than anything from taco bell or the like.
