The ancient Greeks resorted to "exposing" unwanted children, leaving them out on a hillside to die. See the story of Oedipus. The Romans probably did too. I don't know about in Solomon's time, but I suppose that if a child were obviously deformed or unlikely to live, they'd have done that as well.

101 (For those unread in the founding documents of our civilization) After ordering the live baby to be cut in two, Solomon declared which woman was the real mother based on their reactions. The woman who was willing to give the child up rather than have it killed was the real mother. (Which one was that in the painting?)

No babies were harmed in the making of this verdict.

One of the points of the Abraham and Isaac story is that child sacrifice is common enough in the near East that Abraham isn't shocked and horrified by it, and that one of the distinguishing features of Judaism versus the other tribes will be God's rejection of such sacrifices.

Certainly the Spartans would have. You had to be tough to survive in Sparta. I think other Greek city-states did; Oedipus's home state was Thebes. Of course the king exposed him because of the prophecy that the boy would end up killing him, the king, and marrying the queen. (Which we know he did.)

No, he did survive being cast out, but he just shows up to Leonidas' front line as they prepare for battle, offering to help.

Leonidas then tells him that he can't do the formation Spartans use to fight, and sends him away. And then the battles never use that formation. And the deformed guy shows Xerxes a hidden mountain pass.

Born deformed and crippled and his mother ran off with him rather than leave him to die. He approached Leonidas and wanted to fight as a Spartan but he would have been unable to hold his shield properly for the phalanx so he was told no and to help behind the lines in tending to wounded. Instead he betrayed the hidden pass location to Xerxes. I think it does somewhat line up with the Herodotus version.

Meanwhile, a mother trapped inside started screaming when the one-year-old baby girl she was holding in her arms was hit in the leg with a stray bullet.

This is how bad things are right now in Philadelphia. On Monday, the deli owner told 6ABC he was still haunted by those screams. "That night I couldn't even sleep because my mind was still hearing that voice, that crying of that mom," Majid Choudary said.

I don't believe that was a "reason" for their destruction. It was noted in Roman histories though.

Given that Carthage is believed to have originated with the Phoenicians and religious practices involving child sacrifice as noted in the Bible from that part of the world, it'd seem logical that they continued those religious practices (certainly the deities appear to be the same).

235 There's a nice arc connecting the four main adults here. Beginning at Solomon at top, the line follows his arm pointing to the swordsman. The line swoops up thru the sword, down his arm and into the left-hand woman. The line continues through her arms, and her pointing right hand lead to the other woman. It's a beautiful swoop that starts off quickly, builds tension and drama fast as it hits the arc's apex. The tension drops abstractly and literally as the line of the arc falls through the composition. It allows for a quick reading and felling of the story.

Sure. The Roman's real reasons were more political, someone above said trade. The Romans were expanding into Sicily and the Carthaginians didn't like them moving in on their turf. The child sacrifice "outrage" seems like a justification added on later after the Romans finally won. Wouldn't be the first time, or last, that governments invented reasons for war.

Generally the only substantiation one can do in the modern era is cross-referencing with different sources such as they are available. Modern historians like coming up with new theories of what happened out of whole cloth and substituting them for anything old records say though. For example sea people denial and Carthaginian child sacrifice denial.

A general assumption of old histories as propaganda tends not to be well-founded. Who would this propaganda even be aimed at? We're not talking about newspapers or television here. That doesn't mean they're free from error, but most deconstruction is garbage.

A contemporary history has many advantages over one written from a distant time frame. It's not that hard to see when a historian is engaged in myth-making.

It should be remember that a modern historian is very different from an ancient historian, they have different audiences. Materials made for the education of rulers are rather different from things meant to sway the masses.

I am not sure how much I buy the theory that every Emperor hated by the upper class (the historian class) is portrayed as a monster. Nero also runs afoul of Christian historians as being one of the first to persecute.

391 Cultures that had an oral tradition would relay accurate information for centuries.
Posted by: Braenyard at July 20, 2021 09:31 AM (lU0Ss)

Oral traditions can be equally shaky if not worse.

Two examples, the Lakota Sioux of the Black Hill had an oral tradition that said that they had always been there, indeed, were created there. In fact, we know from French trading records that they were originally a Great Lakes tribe that was displaced by other Indians who wanted to get in on the lucrative fur trade and that they themselves displace the the then native tribes of the Black Hills. The second involves DeSota's trip through the SE where at one point, he fought a pitched battle with local tribes. When The French later got to this region, the tribes had no memory of this event even happening. So a group of white strangers riding giant deer and shooting thundersticks to kill your people was forgotten in a couple of centuries.

By this logic, you should be able to walk into Barnes & Noble, or log into Amazon, and get honest accounts of the presidencies of the 2000s. But by and large you can't. If we can't sort out our own contemporary history, why should we believe others could? This goes back to different audiences. Ancient histories aren't written for popular consumption. The bias of modern historians and where it applies is often obvious, the same for ancient historians. Older histories, particularly military histories are not very interpretive, they're often listings of events and details.
