Leftwing New York Magazine Admits That Children Have Never Been Threatened By Covid, and That We've Known This From the Earliest Days of the Pandemic

The kids are safe. They always have been. It may sound strange, given a year of panic over school closures and reopenings, a year of masking toddlers and closing playgrounds and huddling in pandemic pods, that among children the mortality risk from COVID-19 is actually lower than from the flu. The risk of severe disease or hospitalization is about the same. This is true for the much-worried-over Delta variant. It is also true for all the other variants, and for the original strain. Most remarkably, it has been known to be true since the very earliest days of the pandemic -- indeed it was among the very first things we did know about the disease. The preliminary mortality data from China was very clear: To children, COVID-19 represented only a vanishingly tiny threat of death, hospitalization, or severe disease. Yet for a year and a half we have been largely unwilling to fully believe it. Children now wear masks at little-league games, and at the swimming pool, and when school reopens in the fall they will likely wear masks there, too. But the kids are not at risk themselves, and never were. Now, thanks to vaccines, the vast majority of their parents and grandparents aren't any longer, either. But first: the kids. Over the course of the pandemic, 49,000 Americans under the age of 18 have died of all causes, according to the CDC. Only 331 of those deaths have been from COVID -- less than half as many as have died of pneumonia. In 2019, more than 2,000 American kids and teenagers died in car crashes; each year about a thousand die from drowning. More American children die in an average year from RSV -- another respiratory ailment, whose prevalence is now growing because 18 months of quarantine have deprived young children of immune exposure -- than died in either of the last two years from COVID-19. Some of these comparisons aren't so neat, since the extraordinary precautions against COVID-19 prevented significant additional spread (and also suppressed the spread of other diseases). But, last year, fewer kids died of COVID-19 than of heart disease, "malignant neopolasms," suicide, and homicide -- not to mention birth defects, which killed hundreds of times more. All told, 600,000 Americans have lost their lives to COVID over the course of the pandemic; just 0.05 percent of those were under the age of 18, a population that represents more than 20 percent of the country's population as a whole.

That was obvious from the beginning. And truthfully when the issue was a couple weeks home, or even the rest of the school year, I was willing to play along. Kids pass on crud they pick up from school to others in the house, and it's not wholly unreasonable to say, "lets take a precautionary step and use the time to make a plan for the fall." The problem was that they didn't make a plan. They fucked around and whipped up hysteria over the Kung Flu until it was impossible to convince teachers to go back into the classroom, and scared many parents as well.

Took the Mrs and the grandkids to the county fair yesterday. It was sunny and about 89 degrees. Only a few people had masks, mostly minority teens. So I'm suspecting fashion system.

This entire pandemic response was completely politicized. It was politicized when the teachers union wrote the kids' masking guidelines for the CDC. It was politicized when it was ok for BLM to burn, loot and murder en masse in major cities across the USA, but a Trump rally in Tulsa was a super-spreader event that was doubleplusungood. It was politicized when people couldn't attend a family funeral service, but DC pols gathered en masse (and sans mask) for John Lewis' GA funeral service, and got a special exemption from the DC mayor to re-enter DC without quarantining. And this stupidity, illiteracy, collapsed institutions, ignorance, submission to illegitimate "expertise" now define the US, ain't going away.

We won't know the extent of the damage for years, but it will be more than weakened immune systems for sure.
Lost year of schooling (because remote was not working fo a lot, probably majority), depression, missed sports and social time including proms, clubs/extracurriculars, summer jobs, etc..

The best part? This motherfucker went to Korea in the *60s/early 70s* He never heard a shot fired in anger.

Strenuously disagree with this. For example, if you're an aspiring hockey player hoping to get into the NHL, you have a very small window to show your stuff in college and get drafted, and to do that you're training your whole life. If, per Malcolm Gladwell, simply being born in the right month in twelve gives you an advantage in that cohort, missing a year of play derails a whole class of hockey players. You miss an Olympic trial due to this nonsense - same thing.
Sure, there's life beyond sports, but the lessons learned while these people are young have significance at the time they're playing. It's a travesty that they have to deal with this, and a tragedy that someone takes their life over it.

so a lot of 2021s had to reclassify (meaning, repeat their senior years) in order to have slim hope of possibly playing college. that reality (that their friends are heading to college and they're going to 13th grade basically) is hitting now.
then there are the ones who just said EFF IT and are hoping to walk on or giving up.
the NCAA is allowing graduated athletes to return to play. at least next year and I think after that as well. so even if you're lucky enough that you were recruited as a 2021, you're going to struggle to make a team with the older, more experienced Post-Seniors all back (and they almost ALL are returning to make up the lost season).

A certain well off mom I know spent the last year at home with the kids trying to work and act as functioning public school system and Disney theme park. So did all her friends. They even had a mid day zoom meeting to drink wine.
After the year long hangover from being being a public school system, well, it is not to hard to conclude that mom's are sick of zoom and want to head for the bar for their mid afternoon cocktails while the kids are back in the classroom eating white paste as God said such things should be.

Certainly. But as a parent of a teen it was a challenge because throughout 2020 they were always witing for the next update, the next decision. It was: are they shutting down? opening up now? OK, how about now? No OK now? OK, what are the rules when you open? Oh, you;re changing the rules? OK, latest update, oh, now closing again? OK, what summer things are available, oh, nothing? Can't go to the freakin beach or workout, really? OK, decide if you're open in September? Decide yet? Oh, changed your mind, now thinking October? OK, new rules? Oh, closing again in early November? Oh, now you don't want them back after Thanksgiving, just home through Christmas? OK, sports cancelled, teammates tested positive w/no sympOh, breakout on campus and sending kids home AGAIN? New rules AGAIN? Oh, ending the school year early? And on and on.
It's been the waiting and the changing their minds, changing the rules, having to jump through hoops and then they pull back. Shower, rinse, repeat.
Make plans, then have rug pulled out from under them.

I see the repercussions of this shit almost daily. I don't know if it was a kneejerk reaction to the completely opposite parenting a lot of us boomers had or what. The shit I used to do unsupervised as a child - and an only child at that - still kind of blows my mind. Of course, these days I'd be snatched off the street when I was miles away from home, but there's got to be a happy medium.
And now we've got a generation of kids growing up who haven't seen a face for over a year, and in many cases another peer in the same room. A year and a half is a long, long time for a child. And the social experiment is hardly over.

That "silent superspreader" thing was laughable on its face the moment they published the report. I'm not a scientist and barely even an amateur armchair statistician (though I am good with data), and it was blindingly obvious from the word "go" on that one. It was laughably uncontrolled and they had an outrageously broad definition of "child" and a tiny sample and then they fudged the results anyway. That particular study is what finally made me stop and go, "hmmm. They're all dissembling liars, to the last man. I should just start disregarding everything that anyone even tangentially related to the establishment says."

They'd better hope that's as far as it goes. It's a forlorn hope, but it's all they've got. It's *way* bigger than the medical establishment. Sure, they lost all credibility and trust - but so did every level of government, every facet of academia, the press (whatever little trust they had left), scientific establishments in general, international organizations, and more. They have all shown themselves to be entirely corrupt and untrustworthy. I can't think of a single institution that has come out of this thing unscathed.
That any have come out alive is itself a serious problem.

Its not just athletes - top tier academic kids are competing against last year's crop as well for a very limited number of seats in elite math and engineering programs. There are only so many decent professors at that level. Their window isnt as tight as athletes - but their entire lives have been built around getting into these programs.

omg Jean yes on this. the 2021s had this insanely competitive normal admissions process. Could tell you many stories. add the lack of testing dates available in Cursed Blue States and it was a travesty (and is). I keep telling people "transfers are a thing." just see how it goes where you ended up, do your best, and consider a transfer if necessary. the selective schools have a fairly high rate of unprepared students washing out and I don't think this set will be any different.

Not that, but I have been pulled over and harassed due to my out of state plate. The year CO legalized pot, Nebraska cops started referring the to the CO license plate as the "green badge of courage." They had great fun pulling over CO cars, presuming that they were all violating NE pot laws and harassing the drivers. They were *very* unhappy when a judge eventually told them that a CO tag was not probable cause on its own.

My friends from deep blue regions of Oregon and their kids were in and out of my place all summer. Their cousins were here for a couple weeks...Fishing, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Rafting, Camping, all the Pinball they could play.
I don't think they will suffer any long term damage from the experiences.

We did that - we'd get out and drive all over, go on whatever trails were open, any places that were open. We did as much as was possible given how shut down the state was for months. Kid even managed to get a summer job at nearby BK.
You have to do what you can to cope, but it was/has been frustrating how much was made not available and this gray area of "maybe open soon, we think, but we may shutdown right after, so. . ."

I drove from Boston to the Poconos last week. Wife and I both noticed how lush the trees and forests were along the highways, much more so than in times past when we've taken the same route.
The trees are obviously taking advantage of the higher levels of CO2, and as a result are pumping out more O2 for all animals to breathe. A win-win the Green Weenies will assiduously ignore.

Yeah, that's what happens when one of the most, if not THE most, polluted river in the United States, the New River, feeds it. Where does the New River come from? Mexico, of course. All the human waste, farm waste, industrial waste from Mexicali flows north. I've seen reports on what they've found in the river. There are also radionucleotides, probably from medical waste...
