Sunday Morning Book Thread 07-11-2021

home library bogota columbia 02.jpg
La Fuerza de las Palabras Library, Bogota, Colombia

Good morning to all you 'rons, 'ettes, lurkers, and lurkettes, wine moms, frat bros, crétins sans pantalon (who are technically breaking the rules). Welcome once again to the stately, prestigious, internationally acclaimed and high-class Sunday Morning Book Thread, a weekly compendium of reviews, observations, snark, witty repartee, hilarious bon mots, and a continuing conversation on books, reading, spending way too much money on books, writing books, and publishing books by escaped oafs and oafettes who follow words with their fingers and whose lips move as they read. Unlike other AoSHQ comment threads, the Sunday Morning Book Thread is so hoity-toity, pants are required. Even if it's these pants, since listen, fat, goats are like mushrooms, because if you shoot a duck, I'm scared of toasters. C'mon, man. Kamala, who has my trunalimunumaprzure? I think I need a recharge.

Pic Note:

Wow. This is quite a backstory:

Jose Alberto Gutierrez doesn’t just turn trash into treasure—he transforms it into a free education for neighbors. As The Telegraph reports, the middle-aged garbage collector in Colombia has spent the past two decades collecting discarded books he finds while on the job in Bogota, the country’s capital city. Thousands of titles later, Gutierrez has an enormous library, which he and his family lend out to the community for free.

Gutierrez’s library is called La Fuerza de las Palabras, which is Spanish for "The Strength of Words." The collection fills several rooms in his home—and thanks to donations, it continues to grow. (So much, in fact, that the Gutierrez family can no longer squeeze reading groups for children inside their house.) Today, the family is expanding their public literacy mission—and getting rid of extra books—by delivering titles to Colombia’s poor and rural areas.

Second Thoughts

A week or so ago, in a segment about how the FBI might have infiltrated the Jan. 6th protests in Washington DC and instigated the violence and vandalism themselves, Tucker Carlson mentioned this book in passing, The Terror Factory: Inside the FBI's Manufactured War on Terrorism by Trevor Aaronson, who I believe made his bones as a lefty investigative reporter. His book

...shows how the FBI has, under the guise of engaging in counterterrorism since 9/11, built a network of more than fifteen thousand informants whose primary purpose is to infiltrate Muslim communities to create and facilitate phony terrorist plots so that the bureau can then claim victory in the War on Terror.

A few years ago, I would not have even considered reading a book like this. I thought that the very idea that a federal agency would use dirty tricks and skullduggery on American citizens just to pad their arrest records was absurd. Also, I did not listen to critics of the PATRIOT Act, even those on our side of the aisle, who pointed out that the legislation was so far reaching it could be repurpose to use against domestic targets. "Ha ha", I said. "Pull the other one." And also: "we'd never do anything like that."

Well, I'm not laughing now. Not after the full-out war campaign against the January 6th trespassers.

The book offers unprecedented detail into how the FBI has transformed from a reactive law enforcement agency to a proactive counterterrorism organization—including the story of an accused murderer who became one of the FBI's most prolific terrorism informants—and how so-called terrorism consultants and experts have made fortunes by exaggerating the threat of Islamic terrorism in the United States...how the FBI has, under the guise of engaging in counterterrorism, built a network of more than 15,000 informants whose primary purpose is to infiltrate Muslim communities to create and facilitate phony terrorist plots so that the Bureau can then claim it is winning the war on terror.

And now it looks like all of this COINTEL apparatus turned back around and pointed inward, repurposed to go after what Biden's goons call "domestic violent extremists" and "white supremacists", labels, which, more and more as time goes on, are going to be applied to the Biden administration's political opponents.

Moron Recommendations

16 This week's reading selection is Tanith Lee's "The Secret Book of Paradys." It's a gothic version of Paris, with demons stalking the streets and the inhabitants suffering from madness and delusions. It's also strangely appropriate for Canadian PRIDE season because several of the characters are quite gender-fluid. In some cases they literally transition from male to female and vice-versa. In other instances, it's a cosmetic transition with strategic use of makeup and padding. But there is little to admire in her characters (other than they are excellently written). Their circumstances are often tragic and the characters engage in very morally questionable activities. Great stuff.

This is a 4-book series, the first of which is The Book of the Damned, is actually three novellas of, as the blurb says, "dark magic, eroticism, and gothic fantasy." You can read more complete descriptions of each story on the Amazon page. The Kindle edition is only $7.99.

192 I mentioned in a thread yesterday I came across a library book called The Leopard by Guiseppe Lampedusa, which is historical fiction based on the author's grandfather's life (?)

Apparently considered one of the most important / best selling Italian books of the last century. Never heard of it before so I will try to remedy ignorance by reading it.

Posted by: vmom stabby stabbyt stabby stabamillion at July 04, 2021 09:15 AM (oEn12)

I thought this was going to be one of those obscure, hard-to-find, but I was wrong:

The Sicilian prince, Don Fabrizio, hero of Lampedusa's great and only novel, is described as enormous in size, in intellect, and in sensuality. The book he inhabits shares his dimensions in its evocation of an aristocracy confronting democratic upheaval and the new force of nationalism. In the decades since its publication shortly after the author's death in 1957, The Leopard has come to be regarded as the twentieth century's greatest historical fiction.

it has been translated into English (of course) and is available on Kindle and in hardcover.

179 I've been reading The Eagle and the Dragon by Lewis F McIntyre, a novel about an ancient Roman diplomatic mission to China during the reign of the Emperor Trajan. They set out from Alexandria and visit many of the famous sites including the Library and the Lighthouse at Pharos.

Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks aka Hangdog Barkston at July 04, 2021 09:11 AM (d9FiS)

They certainly do get around, according to the Amazon description:

...But Fate has other plans for these unlikely companions, sending them together on a journey that will take them thousands of miles by sea and land across the tapestry of the mysterious worlds at the close of the first century. From the storm-tossed Indian Ocean to the opulent Hanaean court, from the wild grassy steppes north of China to the forbidding peaks of the Pamir Mountains of Bactria, they fight for their lives, hoping to find the road that will lead them back to Rome.

The Kindle edition is only $3.99. For 500+ pages, that's a lot of bang for your buck.

Lurkette author Sarah Hoyt has published Other Rhodes, which appears to be the first installment in a new science fiction mystery series, the Rhodes Mysteries:

Lily Gilden has a half-crazed cyborg in her airlock who thinks he's Nick Rhodes, a fictional 20th Century detective. If she doesn't report him for destruction, she's guilty of a capital crime.

But with her husband missing, she'll use every clue the cyborg holds, and his detective abilities, to solve the crime her husband was investigating when he disappeared.

With the help of a journalist who is more than he seems, Lily will risk everything to plunge into the interstellar underworld and bring the love of her life home!

It's just $3.99 on Kindle.

(h/t Sabrina Chase for telling me about this for Ms. Hoyt, who is currently at an undisclosed location with no internet).

___________

Conservative author John Taloni has just published what looks like a Norse/Greek mythology crossover novel, Thunder God of Mars: A Superhero Prose Novel

Thor vs. Ares with the fate of Mars in the balance! An urgent challenge calls Thor to Mars, where hostile forces threaten a new colony's fragile future. To aid the colonists he must contend against opportunistic deities from Earth and Mars, as well as the harsh environment of Mars itself. This Novella-length book is inspired by Thor comics and Ray Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles," with a dash of Richard Riordan.

Contains six short stories making one complete arc. Also includes a bonus story where being normal is enough to be a superhero.

John describes his stories as "agenda-free." So he's not trying to hit you over the head with anything, he just wants to tell exciting, thrilling, interesting stories that entertain you.

But in order to know if John succeeds with this, you'll have to buy his book and read it for yourself. The Kindle edition of Thunder God of Mars is available on Kindle for $2.99.

So that's all for this week. As always, book thread tips, suggestions, bribes, insults, threats, ugly pants pics and moron library submissions may be sent to OregonMuse, Proprietor, AoSHQ Book Thread, at the book thread e-mail address: aoshqbookthread, followed by the 'at' sign, and then 'G' mail, and then dot cee oh emm.

What have you all been reading this week? Hopefully something good, because, as you all know, life is too short to be reading lousy books.

I also picked up his biography of John Adams. I have also been reading a long biography of Washington by David O. Stewart and which is about Washington's political rise. It is an interesting book but has a much drier style than McCullough.

29 Read Any Weir's latest, "Project Hail Mary", in which our planet is facing an extinction-level event that may plunge the Earth into a permanent ice age. Our hero Ryland Grace awakens in a spacecraft millions of miles from home suffering from amnesia. His crewmates are dead and he's hurtling into the unknown. We learn the from flashbacks that he is part of a world-wide mission to build a ship to go to the Tau Ceti system to find a way to stop the phenomenon causing the solar dimming.

Anyone who enjoyed "The Martian" will find this familiar territory. A lone scientist, stranded in a strange environment, blah blah blah... His protagonists have an appealing "can-do" attitude and accept the situation as it is -- "do what you can, with what you have, where you are" -- and tackle the obstacles one step at a time. But as with "The Martian", reading about a series of technical problems can get tedious. I wonder if Weir can only write one story with variations. I skimmed a lot. A LOT.

64 Yes, that library bears a certain resemblance to my own, save that I do have shelves. With stacks on them, and near them.
I was tempted by last weeks Book Thread mention of a period mystery by one Mark Wrightman "Waking the Tiger". Well, only three bucks in Kindle, and it was set in late 1930s Singapore! Well, why not? I was intrigued by the setting, since I had to do a fair amount of research about Singapore at that time for my last book "My Dear Cousin" - which had one of the heroines escaping Singapore before the British surrender in 1942.
I'm about halfway through, and it's an interesting setting and time and more than adequate writing. The hero detective is just now working through the connections to the murdered woman, and trying to make sense of the clues. Quite nice reading for a rainy weekend!

Once you get through the hoops (one time thing last time it got a new phone about a year ago), you get access to your library. Nothing downloaded until you want to read something on that device.

More and more stuff is using 2FA and then registering a device or specific browser agent. My bank started that a good number of years ago before 2FA. New computer or phone or tablet hitting the online banking login page? Answer the security questions you picked when initially registering.

91 Finished Abigail by Magda Szabo, a very different type of book than The Door and translated posthumously by New York Review of Books Publishing, an amazingly high quality publishing house for being run by lefty shitbags, with plenty of overlooked gems seeing the light of day. It takes place in Hungary during WW2 where a widower General in Budapest parks his rebellious daughter in a Protestant boarding school out in the sticks to the east. She hates it there and tries to escape constantly even though she's there for her own safety. The school has a statue in the main garden named Abigail where messages are left for Gina that surreptitiously advise her on what to do to stay safe, including reversing some really dumb schemes she developed. After a point it becomes both an adventure story of how Gina gets out of the dangerous situation (after all there's a war going on) and who among a limited set of characters is the person behind Abigail, which isn't answered until the last line of the book.

For being a somewhat simple tale it was remarkably well told and kept me engaged all 333 pages.

101 I started reading LOTR yesterday. I am one of 3 humans on the planet who have never seen the LOTR movies. When I was a teen, I started reading "The Hobbit" but tired very quickly of characters with big hairy feet. I remember in the 60's and 70's, "The Hobbit" was a hippie favorite, sitting on the boards and bricks bookshelves, right next to "The Teachings of Don Juan" "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Universe" and the bong and rolling papers. So I thought of "The Hobbit" as something that was fine for stoned Dungeons and Dragons nerds but not my cup of tea.

Then the movie trilogy of LOTR came out and people raved about how great they were, but I resisted watching them because I wanted to read the books first - but when you flip though a one volume copy of LOTR and check out the maps and appendices at the end, you realize this isn't rainy day reading, this is blizzard -in-the Yukon reading. Still, it's captured my interest early in, which wasn't the case with "The Hobbit."

One thing the book accents that might be beyond the range of cinema is just how overpoweringly harsh the Sicilian terrain is with a constant battle between nature and having to tame it. And then once that battle is over they start fighting with each other. It's a short book but just dense with insights.

123 Mornin', all,

I see the Horde spotted Rita Hayworth right away!

I'm finishing up a non-fiction book I actually *bought*, believe it or don't: Them and Us by Danny Vendramini. He proposes a theory he calls "Neanderthal Predation Theory": that the Neanderthals were not to be pitied or mourned, and they didn't look like Fred Flintstone. Instead they looked like LOTR orcs, were nocturnal cannibals who used spears and flint knives -- "wolves with knives" -- and they almost wiped out humanity by hunting, raping, and eating us. Our archaic Homo sapiens ancestors had to learn how to avoid them and then to hunt them down -- history's first genocide.

I dunno if he knows what he is talking about. But the theory makes a great deal of sense, and the book reads extremely well.

Oh Yes! Chronicles and Kings are fast paced and violent and depressing (why won't they listen!??? Why does every good king begat a bad son??!!).
Also a bit confusing to
me with the split between the north and south, the loss of the 10 tribes, the constant attacks and new (and evil) alliances, and the changing country/city names. ( I guess I need a chart of ancient lands and cities with their current names by my side.) But every individual's story from Jezebel to Jonah to the lesser stories of Tobit and a thousand others are great and enlightening and could jusitify an entire book.

And even worse, Lee's brother wrote his own books before this, under his real name, Andrew Grant.

Obviously the publisher didn't want to give up the franchise, so they had him take up Lee's books and use "Andrew Childs." In my experience, whenever the heavy hand of a publisher is behind something, it's never going to be good.

PS. Andrew is married to historical writer Tasha Alexander

For the same reason we don't listen. Our political scene makes me understand now why the Israelites keep backsliding and only turn to God once things get really bad. When they get comfortable, they forget again.

I've given up on trying to keep the place names straight. A map of ancient Israel and Judea and the surrounding kingdoms would sure come in handy though (this, right after I've complained about all the maps in LOTR!)

160 Here's something random and dumb for y'all:

So in English, we use a possessive case/construction really for two functions: ownership and association. As in, "My house" may be the building you personally own and hold the title for, or just the building in which you currently reside and are associated with, but that someone else actually owns.

Are there any languages that have two different constructions for those two relations? Maybe Russian? They're bonkers about fine grammatical distinctions... I dunno.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at July 11, 2021 09:19 AM (6FeV1)

161 Jose Alberto apparently has graduated to the next level of "little free library"

The city of Gaston, in Oregon, straddled the county line and so straddled the boundary of two library districts that wouldn't cooperate. So, in order to have a library that both ends of town could visit and check out, the locals decided to start a subscription library. It was in an old store, and was not very pretty to look at, but they had a good selection of books, and dedicated staff.

An old friend used to be a subscribing member at Gaston, she lived in the country and would have had to pay a sizeable fee to the nearest big city library since she was not taxed for it by living in town. Subscribing there was actually cheaper.

But this veers into speculative fiction far more than his earlier works and you can tell the author is enjoying breaking free of hard SF. Since we moved last month, I've driven by a little strip shopping center with a banner out front reading "Rare Books" and every time said "I want to stop in there some time." Yesterday was some time so I did. It was a nice little shop but more like "Used Books" than Rare; I don't think I saw anything particularly old. I picked up a copy of "1776" mentioned above plus a couple of Civil War books. One, titled something like "The Confederate Reader" is a collection of contemporary war reporting from southern newspapers and journals.

Some of the older librarians and aides who had always loved putting up the decorations and holding Christmas events at the library contacted the media and the story made it into the local news and then into USA Today. The response from the public was overwhelming negative. The Library Board's response to all the criticism? They praised the head librarian for her "courage" and wokeness and ignored what their dumb unwoke patrons - you know, the taxpayers who actually fund the place - had to say. I know one of the older aides who retired after the Board's decision to praise and reward the Grinch who stole Christmas. She told me the Woke One is a complete bitch who has been making the lives of the staff miserable ever since her arrival and the Christmas business was the last straw.

And, yes, the Duke of Norfolk figures in it, as well as a Thomas More who is not as saintly as all that. Great stuff, period detail, wonderful language. The BBC series based on it is also quite excellent.

336 "I've known atheists who don't feel the need to sneer or mock the beliefs of others and who acknowledge their own cultural debt to Christianity."

Yah I think the other type of atheist is just anti-God. Because if you really don't believe in something, why spend time and energy trying to disprove it? (unless maybe you are trying to convince yourself?). For example, I think the Flat Earth people are loons. But I feel no need to troll them in public or "turn" them.

Bedsides, the rationalists need to get their own house in order. Their "science" is has been reduced to a Computer Model Delphi of Climate Doom, men having babies, and the CDC lying about Ebola and politicizing COVID. ...and then there is Pluto Science has abandoned the Scientific Method and is surrendering to the Woke Crusade. Atheists would do better to fight against THAT than mock Religion.

It's been said Soviets were LESS susceptible to propaganda from being exposed to Pravda, whereas Americans delude themselves (Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect) by assuming they are immune. Similar to how the best target for a con is someone who thinks they are too smart to be conned.

Perhaps the story is that pretentious music for the nobles from 200 years ago and wannabe nobles from today, which is unavailable to the masses outside major metropolitan areas (except in the format of Warner brothers cartoons from 40 years ago), has finally lost it's cache, given that the new generation of America's psuedo-nobility is full on Commie, and has no stomach for the arts if they didn't come from the correct propaganda ministry approval process.

There's a list of who's who - fictional names tied to actual people, which includes Ted turner, K. Scwhabb of the WTO, and Bertelesmann (all bad/New World Order architects) and a bunch I don't know.

One of the leaders is Bill Morrell (Cyrus Benthoek in the book), who's a bigshot lawyer. I cannot figure out who he is; hubby and I have never heard of him and we've heard of most of the big timers. Any clues?

One thing I like to mention to the "I love science sexually" crowd is that Dr. Mengele was both a MD and a PhD. He found he was bored by run-of-the-mill doctoring and really wanted to get into research. His PhD was in eugenics, which was a perfectly respectable scientific field in both the US and Europe during the 20's and '30's. And German universities were considered the best in the world.

Mengele didn't wake up every morning thinking "I'm gonna be an evil shit today." He thought of Auschwitz as his own personal lab and believed he was doing beneficial work. He was a product of the science of his day.

So much for "scientists are always right and noble."

*****

On the off chance you are seriously asking:

A young, newly frocked priest ventured out of the abbey into the nearby town. A streetwalker approached him and said, "Hey mister, I'll give you a blowjob for $20." Flustered and unsure what she meant, he demurred and hurried back to the abbey. Embarrassed, but determined to educate himself, he went to see the Mother Superior. In hushed tones he asked her, "Mother, what is a blowjob?" She winked and said, "20 bucks, same as in town."

454 "When Hamlet sarcastically calls Polonius "Jephthah", how many people today understand the reference?"

I did not. imo Genesis One also requires an understanding of how God spoke to people at that time, in terms they could grasp. (little knowledge of astronomy or geology, men of the time probably knew pagan beliefs on multiple gods in control of different things).

Also of interest, other verses imply this is the second heaven and earth .. Lucifer's fall ended the first one iirc? The third heaven (and earth) is paradise, after Lucifer's final end. "Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness."

Not fully sure on the first heaven and earth thing, but Lucifer (angel of Light) fell before Adam, so that could be why there was darkness, until Light was restored by God.

490 Hi- this week's read was "Tulipomania" by Mike Dash. The subject matter, obviously, was the tulip mania that seized Holland in the mid 1630's. But it was surprising to learn that the flowers were actually first found and then transported in the mountains of Mongolia. They were objects of desire and deification in the Ottoman Empire. I was also surprised at how limited the scope of the mania was and the fact that the bust did very little to impact the overall economy of Holland. Also sad that many of the rarest and most valuable species from both Holland and Turkey no longer exist. Really interesting read!

I will read the Leopard, put it on my wishlist on Audible. But as in your Friends set of photos, I have a bit of a rule, that I will not buy a new book until I have finished the current one. Exception below.
Have been reading Tom Clancy, just finished Red Rabbit. Now a few chapters into the Hunt for Red October. Some people criticize his wandering off into side stories, or his attempts to show his deep knowledge of X, y or Z. I can see that. But it does not bother me much.
Bought Sarah Hoyts new book a week back, started it on Kindle. Seems very good. I have a health issue that makes sitting and reading a bit of a pain, literally pain. So books on tape is better for me, where I can walk around and listen, or drive, and Sarahs book does not have that option, so it will be slow going for that reason.

505 My MiL-to-be recommended an old book of hers that she had just reread, The Twenty-Fourth of June, by Grace S. Richmond. Published in 1914, it is the utterly charming story of a young man, heir to millions, who becomes drawn to a young woman of remarkable family. She has no time for him, since she considers him useless. He begins his journey to become worthy of her. I loved it and was delighted to find that the author has written many other stories.

Readers know the feeling of discovering a new beloved author with a respectable number of books under her belt. I look forward to reading them all.

510 If you thought the book on the FBI was bad, it's WORSE than that. Here in Oregon we have the Christmas Tree "Bomber" who has been convicted of plotting to kill at the Tree Lighting Ceremony (back before AntiFA stopped it from ever happening again) and the whole thing was an FBI Operation, from suggesting to the Patsy the plot, to buying the materials, to setting them up into a "bomb" to renting the truck... in other words, the Patsy's only "Crime" was believing he had this bomb and the button would actually set it off.

BUT... wait... THERE'S MORE: If you REALLY want to have your socks knocked off, try reading David T. Hardy's book, "I'm From the Government and I'm Here to Kill You" as he details things from Texas City, Atomic Testing, Tuskegee, Ruby Ridge, Waco, Fast & Furious and several others.

520 Just finished the third Gormenghast book, Titus Alone. The books are...not good. I mean, I get what Peale was going for, I'm not stupid, but...he just missed by so, so much. There's a scene in the second one where a character dies in a slapstick event that is very clearly meant to be as funny as it is grotesque, but it's...just...not. The world he depicts is an awful, awful world that I never want to enter again.

I wish I could remember who recommended these books to me 10 years ago (yes, it took me this long to read them) because I would kick their ass.

They did a Gormenghast TV series a few years ago. I tried to watch it, but it was so repellant, I did not make it through the first episode. I'm not saying it was bad, I just think that the intent of the author and how he goes about realizing it in his story is something I just don't want to have anything to do with.
