Jose Alberto Gutierrez doesn’t just turn trash into treasure—he transforms it into a free education for neighbors. As The Telegraph reports, the middle-aged garbage collector in Colombia has spent the past two decades collecting discarded books he finds while on the job in Bogota, the country’s capital city. Thousands of titles later, Gutierrez has an enormous library, which he and his family lend out to the community for free.
Gutierrez’s library is called La Fuerza de las Palabras, which is Spanish for "The Strength of Words." The collection fills several rooms in his home—and thanks to donations, it continues to grow. 16 This week's reading selection is Tanith Lee's "The Secret Book of Paradys." It's a gothic version of Paris, with demons stalking the streets and the inhabitants suffering from madness and delusions. It's also strangely appropriate for Canadian PRIDE season because several of the characters are quite gender-fluid. In some cases they literally transition from male to female and vice-versa. In other instances, it's a cosmetic transition with strategic use of makeup and padding. But there is little to admire in her characters (other than they are excellently written). Their circumstances are often tragic and the characters engage in very morally questionable activities. Great stuff.This is a 4-book series, the first of which is The Book of the Damned, is actually three novellas of, as the blurb says, "dark magic, eroticism, and gothic fantasy." I'm enjoying the story, the look at two old New Yorks, and the discussions of the dangers of interfering in the past.
I read some reviews that question the "method" of the time travel, but really? There is no time travel, so this seems a bit of a silly complaint, IMO

Finished Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden. It is a excellent book I do think quite in the style of Cornelius Ryan books.
As said yesterday on movie it did a fantastic job but missed x omitting almost every movie would the tactic positions in the overnight positions.

Anyone who enjoyed "The Martian" will find this familiar territory. A lone scientist, stranded in a strange environment, blah blah blah... His protagonists have an appealing "can-do" attitude and accept the situation as it is -- "do what you can, with what you have, where you are" -- and tackle the obstacles one step at a time. But as with "The Martian", reading about a series of technical problems can get tedious. I wonder if Weir can only write one story with variations. I skimmed a lot. A LOT.

I was tempted by last weeks Book Thread mention of a period mystery by one Mark Wrightman "Waking the Tiger". Well, only three bucks in Kindle, and it was set in late 1930s Singapore! Well, why not? I was intrigued by the setting, since I had to do a fair amount of research about Singapore at that time for my last book "My Dear Cousin" - which had one of the heroines escaping Singapore before the British surrender in 1942.
I'm about halfway through, and it's an interesting setting and time and more than adequate writing. The hero detective is just now working through the connections to the murdered woman, and trying to make sense of the clues. Quite nice reading for a rainy weekend!

Once you get through the hoops (one time thing last time it got a new phone about a year ago), you get access to your library. Nothing downloaded until you want to read something on that device.
More and more stuff is using 2FA and then registering a device or specific browser agent. My bank started that a good number of years ago before 2FA. New computer or phone or tablet hitting the online banking login page? Answer the security questions you picked when initially registering.

I'm about halfway through Travis Corcoran's Escape the City. It's a practical, how-to guide for anyone interested in homesteading or just being a bit more self-sufficient. Two massive hardcover volumes at $20 each. It's a steal.
I'm also reading Smart and SeXy: The Evolutionary Origins and Biological Underpinnings of Cognitive Differences between the Sexes by Roderick Kaine. It's a fascinating story of politically incorrect science. It was interesting to learn, for instance, how the SAT test was manipulated to minimize the differences in male-female scores that would otherwise appear in a fair test.

Then the movie trilogy of LOTR came out and people raved about how great they were, but I resisted watching them because I wanted to read the books first - but when you flip though a one volume copy of LOTR and check out the maps and appendices at the end, you realize this isn't rainy day reading, this is blizzard -in-the Yukon reading. Still, it's captured my interest early in, which wasn't the case with "The Hobbit."

Unfortunately, for me, I kinda hate Burt Lancaster as as an actor, and 3+ hours of lame, wooden acting is too much Burt Lancaster for any sentient being.

One thing the book accents that might be beyond the range of cinema is just how overpoweringly harsh the Sicilian terrain is with a constant battle between nature and having to tame it. And then once that battle is over they start fighting with each other. It's a short book but just dense with insights.

BTW, it was a bit of a challenge to find an edition of LOTR that was both in stock at Amazon and affordable. There's a boxed set selling for $168 on Amazon, and I'm sure it's beautifully illustrated and has great maps and so on, but I went to a used bookstore and picked up a one-volume copy for $7 instead. It is a gigantic pain to flip back and forth from the text to the maps though.

I'm finishing up a non-fiction book I actually *bought*, believe it or don't: Them and Us by Danny Vendramini. He proposes a theory he calls "Neanderthal Predation Theory": that the Neanderthals were not to be pitied or mourned, and they didn't look like Fred Flintstone. Instead they looked like LOTR orcs, were nocturnal cannibals who used spears and flint knives -- "wolves with knives" -- and they almost wiped out humanity by hunting, raping, and eating us. Our archaic Homo sapiens ancestors had to learn how to avoid them and then to hunt them down -- history's first genocide.
I dunno if he knows what he is talking about. But the theory makes a great deal of sense, and the book reads extremely well.

Obviously the publisher didn't want to give up the franchise, so they had him take up Lee's books and use "Andrew Childs." In my experience, whenever the heavy hand of a publisher is behind something, it's never going to be good.

We have three free little libraries within easy walking distance. They've been there for years, and always full of great books. Especially helpful when all librarians thought the dark ages were preferable to catching the flu

So in English, we use a possessive case/construction really for two functions: ownership and association. As in, "My house" may be the building you personally own and hold the title for, or just the building in which you currently reside and are associated with, but that someone else actually owns.
Are there any languages that have two different constructions for those two relations? Maybe Russian? They're bonkers about fine grammatical distinctions... I dunno.

The city of Gaston, in Oregon, straddled the county line and so straddled the boundary of two library districts that wouldn't cooperate. So, in order to have a library that both ends of town could visit and check out, the locals decided to start a subscription library. It was in an old store, and was not very pretty to look at, but they had a good selection of books, and dedicated staff.
An old friend used to be a subscribing member at Gaston, she lived in the country and would have had to pay a sizeable fee to the nearest big city library since she was not taxed for it by living in town. Subscribing there was actually cheaper.

I agree. It seems like a good intro to the Bible, especially for kids, or a cute addition for those already familiar. Then again, I used to read my kids stories from a rhyming illustrated Bible so the Street Bible is a definite step up from that.

I doubt it, ownership and possession seem to be interlocked concepts.
It might be in a language with varying shades of "possession" but my gut tells me that would be handled through varying shades of nouns.

One thing I like to mention to the "I love science sexually" crowd is that Dr. Mengele was both a MD and a PhD. He found he was bored by run-of-the-mill doctoring and really wanted to get into research. His PhD was in eugenics, which was a perfectly respectable scientific field in both the US and Europe during the 20's and '30's. And German universities were considered the best in the world.
Mengele didn't wake up every morning thinking "I'm gonna be an evil shit today." He thought of Auschwitz as his own personal lab and believed he was doing beneficial work. He was a product of the science of his day.

"Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness."
Not fully sure on the first heaven and earth thing, but Lucifer (angel of Light) fell before Adam, so that could be why there was darkness, until Light was restored by God.

I will read the Leopard, put it on my wishlist on Audible. But as in your Friends set of photos, I have a bit of a rule, that I will not buy a new book until I have finished the current one. Exception below.
Have been reading Tom Clancy, just finished Red Rabbit. Now a few chapters into the Hunt for Red October. Some people criticize his wandering off into side stories, or his attempts to show his deep knowledge of X, y or Z. I can see that. But it does not bother me much.
Bought Sarah Hoyts new book a week back, started it on Kindle. Seems very good. I have a health issue that makes sitting and reading a bit of a pain, literally pain. So books on tape is better for me, where I can walk around and listen, or drive, and Sarahs book does not have that option, so it will be slow going for that reason.

They did a Gormenghast TV series a few years ago. I tried to watch it, but it was so repellant, I did not make it through the first episode. I'm not saying it was bad, I just think that the intent of the author and how he goes about realizing it in his story is something I just don't want to have anything to do with.
