The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Appropriate discussions around concepts like white privilege remain perfectly appropriate for a high school class, like contemporary issues. These charges of dismissal are about Mr. Hawn refusing to provide his students with access to varying points of view, which is required under Tennessee law. And these charges are about Mr. Hawn, again, assigning inappropriate materials to his students."Sullivan County Director of Schools Dr. David Cox

Quote II

“So how quickly we can get this under control and which way we go depends on what we do now to overcome disinformation. What we really need to do at this point is make vaccination the easy choice. It needs to be hard for people to remain unvaccinated. Right now, it’s kind of the opposite. It’s fine. It’s easy if you’re unvaccinated. You can do anything you want to do anyway. At some point, these mandates by workplaces, by schools, I think it will be important to say, hey, if you want to opt-out, you have to sign these forms, get twice weekly testing. Basically, we want to make getting vaccinated the easy choice. That is what it’s going to take for us to actually end the pandemic." CNN medical contributor Dr. Leana Wen

Quote III

"This is one of the management tools that we are using. So, it definitely helps remove pythons from the wild," she said. "Every python matters. Every python that we can remove, and engage the public to help us in those removal efforts, is helpful."
Kristen Sommers of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

Quote IV

"We are calling on all Communists to take to the streets where these provocations are being staged and oppose them,"
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel

Wow sex and money find a way to look legitimate. Wow, I'm so shocked. Not.

Two dozen massage schools with connections to prostitution or fraud, or sometimes both. And regulators who know about the problem, but lack the authority to act.

Those were the findings from a USA TODAY investigation last week focused on the role massage schools play in funneling licensed workers to illicit sex spas.

These institutions often operate in plain sight, in office parks or commercial strips, but regulators say they’re difficult to identify. And prosecuting sex trafficking is challenging because it can rely on the willingness of immigrant women to admit they were forced to engage in sex acts.

So it’s often a seemingly insignificant detail, like exam answers hidden in a boot or a forged signature on official school documents, that prompts action. Local massage boards monitoring their licensure data are often the ones who uncover suspicious schools, USA TODAY found.

"Ignore No Soliciting Signs, Use Your Script": Vaccine Door-Knocking Documents Revealed

As the Biden administration peddles its plan to send door-knocking missionaries across America to spread 'vaccine awareness' (and keep track of who's vaccinated and who's not), White House-coordinated FEMA "surge teams" are being assembled to reinforce local efforts on the ground.

Even if you were vaccinated, it's none of their GD business.

So our score at the moment regarding space flight is: Richard Branson 1 - Elon Musk 0.

A week before his 71st birthday, the billionaire mogul successfully flew aboard the VSS unity, which touched down at Virgin Galactic’s New Mexico hub Spaceport America earlier today.

Travelling aboard the space plane VSS Unity, Branson climbed to an altitude of 90km (295,000ft), offering a view of the curvature of the Earth and four minutes of weightlessness for those onboard.

VSS Unity took off beneath the wings of a carrier aircraft known as VMS Eve, named after Branson’s late mother Evette Branson.

I've started to make our own bacon here at Casa Misanthrope. It looks like I'm living a healthy life after all.

THE METAPHYSICS OF BACON
I know you’ve all heard of the famous “plant-based” impossible burger, which is deeply confusing because I’ve always thought every one of my burgers was “plant-based”—cows eat plants, and then I eat the cow. QED. Now comes news that someone is trying to make “plant-based bacon,” and count me skeptical. Actually, if you do a web search, you will find lots of links to “vegan bacon,” which has to be near the great oxymoron ever conceived by a postmodern English department. I say, with Homer Simpson, that you’ll never replace that miracle animal that gives us bacon, hot dogs, sausage, pork shops, baby back ribs, kielbasa, and the rest.

Our friends at the indispensable Foundation for Economic Education did a roundup of 15 key facts and health benefits of bacon a while ago, and some of these deserve highlight and commentary (in italics):

Lobotomies? No. Electric shock? Yes. Watch out Kennedy children.

A federal appeals court has overturned The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s ban on the use of controversial electric shock devices used at the Judge Rotenberg Center.

The devices are specifically used to “correct aggressive or self-harming behavior in adults and children,” the residential school said. The devices are also used at only one facility in the country, which is in Canton.

In March 2020, the FDA banned electrical stimulation devices (ESDs) used for self-injurious or aggressive behavior.

On this day: July 11, 1996 - Jonathan Melvoin
Jonathan Melvoin keyboard player with the Smashing Pumpkins died from a drug overdose in New York City aged 34. Several songs were inspired by his death, including Sarah McLachlan's hit single 'Angel.' He was the brother of Susannah and Wendy Melvoin of Prince and the Revolution. Melvoin had also been a member of The Dickies. via thisdayinmusic.com

So he never passed the Cause & Origin classwork. Now he's just a Genius Award Winner.

A former Northville firefighter recently was arraigned on two felony arson charges in connection to a fire that destroyed his home in Plymouth Township.

Patrick Nolan, 40, is now residing at Wayne County Jail. He is expected to return to 35th District Court later in July.

He faces a charge of arson of an insured dwelling, which could mean life in prison if convicted, and a charge of second-degree arson, a crime that could mean 20 years in prison.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has been investigating the Shefield Court fire with the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services’ Fraud Investigation Unit.

A jury gets the verdict correct. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

A woman who was charged with assault after striking a person with her SUV last summer during a protest following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis has been found not guilty of that charge by a Denver jury.

After jurors handed down their verdict on Friday, attorneys for the driver, Jennifer Watson, issued a statement on the firm’s Facebook page that said, in part, “Ms. Watson should not have been charged. We appreciate the jury’s verdict of not guilty to the assault charge.”

However, jurors did find Watson guilty of a misdemeanor offense for reckless driving, Fox News reported.

NASA uses the 50 mile marker along the Vertical Interstate. With it's left blinker on for the last 20 miles. NASA is OLD! (Branson is, too, but hey, kudos for making the flight. Unlike John Glenn's Shuttle flight, Branson PAID for this one!)

I'm surprised he didn't learn enuf about arson, when he was a firefighter, to start a fire that was less obviously arson.

There's an interesting arson-related plot in the Jack Lemon film "Save the Tiger." The professional torch tells Jack he can't burn down Jack's garment factory because... the4e are too many fire code violations! The insurance company wouldn't pay off on Jack's policy, because his place is such a firetrap. They decide to start the fire in an adjoining business instead & ket it spread to Jack's place, in order to finesse the problem.

119 So, fun story: Last night, I was coming up the back stairs to Mom's house - a short brick staircase I've been up and down thousands of times in the past fifty-three years - when my feet decided I should do a nosedive. So weird; almost felt like I was being pushed, and with no moment to think, I hit hard. Particularly graceless landing!

Being almost sixty-nine 29 years old, I'm grateful that I apparently only suffered bad bruises and scrapes on my left leg and my back (unless I cracked or broke something of which I'm not yet aware). This was as bad a fall as I'd ever want to suffer. I've been hobbling around with a cane and struggling to get up and down chairs, bed, toilets.... but it's only pain to push through. Healing's going to take a while. Anyway my right side is uninjured.

Wasn't it here recently there was that clip of the gal falling off the skateboard, springing on her hands, and landing on her feet with a "ta-da"?? Yeah, I didn't do that.

But, by Grapthar's Hammer, I live to tell the tale.

126 Branson and Scaled Composites have developed some interesting technology. The lift vehicle built is a YUGE airplane, which can also lift rockets that can be launched into orbit from the carrier. And the Scaled Composites flyer (VSS) is an interesting but limited vehicle. It can't go into orbit and de-orbit; it doesn't have the shielding to handle a true high velocity atmosphere re-entry.
Space - X has a lot of Falcon 9 launches, has the Dragon unit qualified and man-rated, routinely launches unmanned re-supply flights (into orbit) to the ISS. Falcon Heavy is a major heavy lift vehicle, that has been accepted by DoD for military launches (as has Falcon 9). The Super Heavy and Starship will use "many" bigger Raptor engines and be a true heavy lift launcher. In a few years, Musk has promised a trans-lunar orbital mission, and the Starship has been accepted as the Lunar Lander (unit) for Artemis.
As far as Bezos and Blue Origin, well, after all this money and time, what have they achieved? I guess Bezos is going to onboard for the suborbital flight scheduled for this July 20. If you ask me, Musk, Gwen Shotwell (who runs SpaceX) and SpaceX are way ahead of either of these outfits.

Half of the scammers are just trying to find out if it's a live phone number or email address. They can sell that information if they have enough of them to other marketers.

No matter what you do (except ignore) they get some information data that they can sell. And even an ignored email tells them that the address is real unless it comes back as undeliverable.

These are people who deal in fractions of a penny per data item thus they have to garner billions of bits of data to make any money. The phone companies could stop this but they make money off of it.

It's the velocity. The space plane can only go so far. If they launch a rocket from it that rocket will still have to get to the speed to exceed the escape velocity of the earth's gravitic influence.

This was all just show. They have yet to launch a large rocket from the flying vehicle. They have launched smaller ones for satellite placement.

Escape velocity is in excess of 6k mps.

227 192 illniwek,
The problem with Codevilla is that he is an old congressional staffer that actually had a hand in writing the FISA law. You can see that by his scant mention of Congress in his screed. The problems that Trump had were with Congress and Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan did nothing to defend him nor pass his agenda for two years. McConnell stymied the appointments and Ryan sat on his ass.

The truth is that the center of corruption in the Senate is the Senate Intel committee and House Intel committee. The Senate Committee in particular is Codevilla's old stomping grounds working for Patrick Moynihan. About only Nunes comes out of the last four years looking like a good guy and Ryan personally allowed the fake ethics hit on Nunes to get him out the way during the Russia Russia coup attempt.

We had a young man (freshman, when I was a junior, iirc) at the Air Force Academy drop during intramurals one day, he didn't even make it off the courts. He had a hole in his heart. The sort of thing that should disqualify you from getting in.

But, the docs figured he was in such good health that no one would ever notice something like that until it, one day, just took him down. We have this misapprehension that people in "really good health" don't have anything wrong inside, when, really, they might be healthy enough it doesn't matter.

And, I'm glad to hear everyone is doing alright.

Ivermectin can be purchased (veterinary grade) at a lot of rural stores (ie, Rural King), and Ann Barnhardt has a page on her website with directions on how to use it versus your body weight.
It's almost guerrilla medicine now.

Also, you can look up America's Frontline Doctors, and for $90 and a telemedicine visit, they can and will write prescriptions for you for either. At least, for now.

241 To continue, Congress is indeed the Keystone to the Washington establishment and has always been subject to grifters, easy money, and corruption even during the Revolutionary days. Look up the Conway Cabal and the plot to replace George Washington for example and you will see a number of 'big' Revolutionary names that were at least peripherally involved.

Right now, many of the bad laws created are written for Congress by interest groups and those writing the laws are former staffers. Other interest groups focus on manipulating the budgetary process which has basically broken down with impenetrable budgets and opaque appropriation riders contained in massive omnibus bills. Corporations definitely play both sides to get what they want by paying for it and that is the core of the uniparty in Congress.

244 This is actually quite clever of them. Theoretically they can make a one stop deal by having a cop or a Doctor along. In most states the police or a doctor can have someone confined for 72 hours if in their opinion the person is exhibiting signs of mental disturbance that could lead to them harming themselves or someone else.

Then they break in and if you have any other "problematic" things in your dwelling they can seize those and keep you in jail longer.

They also have outwitted us in the police area by sending the Capitol Police out into the country. the Capitol police is Nancy's own private army. They are not governed by any state or local laws only Congress thus they can do a lot of damage with no one ready or able to push back on them.

And finally, I always thought the ammo buildup during Obama was weird but what if it was a stockpile that could be shared between departments? And also they reduced the available stock pile for citizens to have thus the shortages now.

The reason that the lawsuits did not do a very good job reining in the Covid regulations was that federal courts have deferred to expert agencies since Chevron v. NRDC decision in regards to their expertise (also see Vermont Yankee case). So the default of the fed courts is to trust the agency over the plaintiffs if the matter is technical.

State restrictions generally required state legal challenges and so the success varied according to state laws. Many of the states have quite draconian public health laws that delegated decision making to public health authorities and executive officials. These were left over from epidemics in the 1800's and 1900's before modern health care and the modern interconnected world.

It's not more efficient. In fact a rocket is a pretty inefficient way to do it. It's just that a rocket is a much *easier* and simpler way to get something into orbit.

The holy grail has always been a "space plane" or something close to it, or even a reusable launch vehicle that could take a payload up to orbit, then return, undamaged, ready to make another run.

That is a very difficult engineering challenge. They are working on it now, and I hope they succeed.

270 247 illiniwek, Codevilla is an old style Democrat probably similar to Flynn where the modern party left them. Codevilla to his credit is well read, knows his history, and actually participated actively in our government before becoming a professor of foreign policy.

That being said, today's Congress bears as much resemblance to the 1970's era Congress as the government of Venezuela compared with those same eras. The average back benchers in both parties have little input today, the leadership puts together the legislative packages and cuts deals with interest groups, committee chairs are picked to go along, not be the independent mandarins like the 60's, and basically the rank and file are pretty faces designed to market the interest group written legislation, not to think on their own. The leadership of both parties are the managers and they control the access to interest group funding and pac money as well as provide marketing and campaign messaging.

The few congress critters that are independent in voice and voting raise their own money or are in tune with their constituents so they are unbeatable: e.g. Rand Paul, AOC, MTG. Most Congress critters go with the flow.

We do think of rockets as going "straight up", 'cause that's what it looks like when they launch. But that's only to get high enough initially. You want to get up high where the air is thinner and then you want to pile on *tangential velocity*.

The goal of an orbit, the simplest type (and more complex types are desirable, but we won't worry with that) is to get up to a circular orbit at some height.

Now, in that circular orbit, your radial velocity is zero, and your tangential velocity is orbital velocity at that height. Which is about 17,500 mph at 100 miles height.

Take the Saturn V Lunar Mission Stack, and let's eliminate the first stage with it's five insanely powerful F-1 engines. You'd still have to get the 2nd & 3rd stages, topped by the Service and Command Modules, aloft. Not an airplane made nor envisioned can lift the weight of such fully fueled stages. So, buncha balloons, blimps or zepplins? Gonna have to get it all up to altitude, and properly oriented before pressing the Loud Button. And if the "stack" isn't aligned as designed? Thrust is gonna tear it apart if it's not initially pointing "UP". It'll be able to lay down to an orbital orientation as it climbs up out of the atmosphere, but not at first. Rockets work because physics eliminates most other options.

So your goal in the guidance control of a rocket is to get the payload up to say 100 miles, with zero radial velocity and the necessary tangential velocity.

Some of the Apollo enthusiasts wrote a program in BASIC years ago I remember that allowed you to play the guidance system of the Saturn V and adjust pitch and the other variables to get the Apollo-S-IVB in orbit.

You're gonna be staging, which changes things dramatically. At first, you go nearly vertical to gain altitude. Then you lay over. Pitching down. You need to gain tangential velocity.

Near the last portion of the first state, the Saturn V was nearly horizontal. First stage tanks were nearly empty, and that was the sweet spot to pour on the horizontal delta-V.

Then, boom, you stage. You have to pitch up quickly when the lower thrust second stage engines take over to maintain vertical acceleration.

If you do it right, you reach orbital altitude with zero radial velocity and perfect tangential velocity.

289 281 Trump's attempts to get a wall and change immigration laws were adamantly refused even with the potential Dreamer's deal thrown in to compensate. This is directly from the Chamber of Commerce folks. Trump's attempt to change national security policy was stymied by his own Sec. of State, his own Nat. Sec. Council, Sec. of Defense, generals, and tremendously criticized by his own party in Congress. Note that most of his other appointees apparently kept their noses clean and ran their departments well. VA is a good example as is Agri, Dept of Labor, Transportation, etc.

Essentially Trump was left to play whack a mole with resistance inside his cabinet and even WH staff because essentially the Washington players felt that they were the ones to run the show, not the figurehead president. And they knew no better than to keep on with the Washington way, not this outsider's ridiculous ideas. That was not true of Obama or GW Bush, even Clinton to some degree. Trump faced the same problem that Reagan did but Reagan at least had a bit more support from his party on some matters.

On one of the Apollo flight transcripts, you can read John Young giving color commentary on the Saturn V guidance system getting them to orbit.

Near the latter stages of the flight, they had overshot a bit on the radial component, and Young said, "Watch it! Watch it, it's gonna pitch up". From our perspective on the ground, he meant pitch down. They rolled over upside down early in the flight for various reasons, so it looked the earth was above them.

The system had overshot the radial, but was stilling need tangential, so it pitched down to kill radial velocity a bit.

298 "always wondered how it's possible that a rocket, going straight up against gravity, is more efficient than a space plane that climbs to altitude using lift for a goodly chunk of the trip. Does anyone know of a primer on the subject?"

hmm, I would not even have considered that comparison. Interesting. At first glance, conservation of energy makes me think going straight up is more efficient than fighting headwinds going sideways, even though the idea of pressure gradient over the wing supplies "free lift". That lift is not really free ... every foot is paid for, PLUS the cost of the friction of the air.

Then getting past the point of air resistance, a plane's wings are dead weight, no lift provided with little atmosphere. My old high school friend, college roommate was aeronautical and astronomical engineering ... none of it rubbed of on me, so I'm just spit ballin'.

300 IIRC, they air-dropped a few single stage, solid fueled ICBMs from the cargo bay of a C-141 Starlifter, back in the 1980s. Successful test launches.

But, that's a single stage, solid fuel (Polaris/Posiedon?) rocket. Do that with a multi-stage liquid fueled assembly, and even an Antonov AN-124 couldn't hump the load. And the engineering on a rocket stack allows mostly for only vertical loadings, which the higher and faster it goes, remain "vertical" as far as the G loading to the stack is concerned, even as it lays down, climbing and accelerating downrange.

One thing I would love to experience -- say I had a genie in a bottle, or Holodeck technology -- would be to experience riding a Saturn V to orbit (and to the Moon, of course).

John Young, which I mentioned above. A real man, and American. Old school. Apollo 16, walked on the Moon. He died in 2018. The Right Stuff.

He flew two Geminis, 3 and 10, and two Apollos, 10 (the dress rehearsal for the Moon landing) and Apollo 16.

He also flew STS-1, the very first Space Shuttle Mission. They put him, a true veteran, in the command seat for that. He flew one later STS mission.

They used to have a "heart rate" contest, to see who was the coolest. On STS-1, John Young's heart rate during impending launch was less than some of the guys in Mission Control.

He had been there, done that, and was cool as a cucumber.

Hmmph. During Apollo 11 launch, Neil Armstrong's heart rate averages 110, Collins 99, and Buzz was just 88.

When they returned from the radio blackout after the first trip around the far side of the Moon, Armstrong was 106, Buzz was 70, and Collins was 66.

During the descent to the lunar surface, Neil's rate hit 150 when he took manual control. When he took his first small step from man, one giant leap for mankind, his heart rate was 125. No data on Buzz I see for those moments, but I'm sure it's out there.

Pfizer, is of course, one of the big mRNA shot purveyors, which made billions off the federal govt.

Just keep that in mind. One of the biggest problems with this Pharam shit is that nobody actually goes to jail. It's just a YUGE multinational corp. pays some bucks for a fine, which they make up shortly thereafter.

Why doesn't anyone go to jail for this shit? Because they're afraid that really getting serious with this shit might undermine confidence in the medical system. That is, if they really went after the liked of Pfizer and the others for the criminal shit they do, put the executives in jail, and broke up the company, well, the sheeple would lose confidence.

Same reason they let the criminals get away with all the subprime shit back during the '08 crisis.

Consider Julian Assange. He's not a US citizen, but an Australian subject, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen. He spills a bunch of dirt on the criminal US govt., and now they want to charge him under the Espionage Act.

Luckily, the Brits have denied extradition. But our Deep State criminals are trying their best to get him into our tender mercies. If they get him, he'll be Epsteined/McAffee'd in short order, of course.

Just exactly what did Assange do, besides expose criminal actions by the US govt?

My allegiance is to the Old Republic, the foundation of which is laid down by the Declaration of Independence.

I utterly reject the current usurper which claims title to that, seated in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C is an abomination, an utter slap in the face of Geo. Washington, the sine qua non (without which, not) of the United States. It is utter sacrilege that this city of vipers and traitors bears the name of Geo. Washington, the "Greatest man in history" as his adversary, King George III, put it, when learning that Geo. Washington was going "back to the farm" after defeating the King's armies.

Ultimately, Geo. Washington turned down the crack pipe of power twice. The fact that such a city as the current Sodom of Washington, D.C. which bears his name is a crime.
