Journalism jobs have disappeared faster than coal miners, according to the Department of Labor.

I know people don't generally like journalists, but what other industry could suffer job losses of this magnitude due to a corporate buyout and not get any attention or concern from the public?

Concern? Dude, I just came.

Nike CEO: "Nike is a brand of China and for China."

Nike CEO John Donahoe called the sportswear apparel giant a "brand of China" this week, following a fiasco it was involved in earlier this year over concerns about human rights abuses committed by the communist government.

During an earnings call this week, Donahoe explained that Nike had a long-term view of its operations in China, where it had been operating for about four decades.

"We are the largest sport brand there, and we are a brand of China and for China," Donahoe said. "And the biggest asset we have in China is the consumer equity. Consumers feel a strong, deep connection to the NIKE, Jordan and Converse brands in China. And it's real."

Gallup Poll: 57% of Republicans think, correctly, that the pandemic is over.

Only 4% of Democrats do. Party of Science, y'all.

35% of Independents think it's over. We'll see which way they wind up tipping.

And a Scott Rasmussen poll finds that 57% of the public believes that US government officials actively tried to cover up the lab leak theory.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) of voters think it’s likely that U.S. government officials actively tried to cover-up the possibility that the coronavirus was created in a Wuhan, China, Laboratory. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 26% consider it unlikely and 17% are not sure.

That total includes 35% who say it’s Very Likely and 11% who think it’s Not at All Likely.

Seventy-four percent (74%) of Republicans consider a cover-up to be at least somewhat likely. Independent voters, by a 52% to 22% margin, tend to agree. Democrats are more evenly divided: 45% believe U.S. government officials actively engaged in a cover-up while 39% disagree.

The survey also found that 56% of all voters think it's likely that the Chinese government intentionally created the coronavirus as a biological weapon. Twenty-nine percent (29%) disagree and 16% are not sure.

That last belief -- that the Chinese deliberately created the weapon as a virus -- is very possible. Obviously, making viruses into superviruses is a dual-use technology at best. By which I mean, even if you can actually create vaccines in anticipation of the superviruses you yourself are creating, obviously, the militarization of the superviruses is a much more direct play.

And I say this is a "dual-use technology at best" because I think it's still a very open question whether or not we will create superviruses, and then create vaccines for them, and then happen upon a genetic twin of the supervirus we created evolving naturally in nature and infecting people.

Seriously-- what are the odds, do you think, that we'll have even one of those types of very unlikely hits? That we just happen to use gain-of-function genetic swapping to create a virus, then create a vaccine for it, and then nature just happens to follow the same pathways to create the exact (or near-exact) supervirus we made in a lab?

Why don't any journalists ask about that? Sure seems like drawing to an inside straight flush.

Between that unlikely series of events and a lab leak of a supervirus -- or the Chinese deploying the supervirus as a weapon -- I'd say the "create a supervirus then cure it in case nature also creates the same virus" possibility is the least likely.

Oh well shut up don't think trust the science government-dole scientists.

We made a huge mistake venerating the military-- as an institution. As a government organization.

I don't mean this about individual members.

But I do mean it about the institutions themselves.

It wasn't a mistake. The military, like many other public and private organizations, built up a large amount of social, cultural, and political capital over generations. Often at high cost. However, like many such organizations it eventually burns through that capital and the people at the very top are shocked to discover that it's all gone.

84 Yep, the obsession with C19 origins vs. even the slightest interest in debunking the outrageous, catastrophic, scientifically baseless totalitarian response, which is the far bigger issue. Since it has now been test driven, and is there in the garage for the next event/pseudo-event.

Why not polling about whether "lockdowns" made a net positive difference? About mask efficacy? About closing schools? About vaccinating the barely affected (most healthy people under 30, or even older)?

The *actual* important subjects that something can be done about. Country has just meekly submitted to medieval, unscientific hocus-pocus, doesn't even show any interest in examining the record.

Have to say the Newsmax reporter did not distinguish himself either. Maybe he should think up his questions ahead of time, instead of blathering and improvising on the spot.

Is Groot lying when she says violence is down year-over-year? Dunno. If you compare June 28 2021 to June 28 2020, I suppose it's possible that violence was down a bit. But if you did April or May YOY, maybe not. Is she lying about hotel occupancy? Dunno. I do know that the hotels along 90 are favorite shackups for the mobile thugs that attack in our region.

Despite being a crooked lesbian commie, Groot seems intelligent. I'll give her that.

Yup. Glad I don't have an EV.
But it's a peak hour thing. What they want is for EV owners to charge during off-peak. Because (as Musk has warned) EVs need power grid infrastructure, and California doesn't have that.
At least, California doesn't have it when people are also running the AC.
Oh, and if the new rule in some cities about not allowing new homes to use natural gas catches on in other parts of the state, then it will also end up including when people get home in winter and are running the electric radiator.

Only 17% of my students made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on their English/Reading tests. I was diving into the curriculum from the previous grade for material to teach them. I was happy that I could give them a final exam that was actually at grade-level, even if it was material usually tested at midterm.

Our district's solution at the middle-school level is to have kids have a regular math class, a regular English class, and a split class with one semester of "English essentials" and another of "math essentials." If they don't get those essentials, they'll never make it in high school.

I don't get the heebie jeebies real easy, but this place gave it to me. Surrounded by redwood trees, and a weird, long, horizontal layout. Servant's quarters, the whole bit. You could scream bloody murder and nobody would hear you halfway through the place.

The guest house wasn't quite as weird a vibe, probably because it was so open.

Good generals get back in touch by means of their troops, but Pentagon heads never do, just go into infighting.

Sack 90+ percent or more of officers who don't lead troops and things would improve a lot.

To now that the Left is pushing this "lab leak" theory, the right is now calling this a "supervirus".

345 I became a Democrat in 2008 to caucus against Crunt Clinton. I never switched back to Independent. Hence, I am a Democrat who believes CoVID-19 means, Cold Virus ID-19.

The Greatest Generation defeated the Nazis while they were beating the shit out of the Japs.

The Hippies survived Vietnam War protests.

We have a cold.

346 Tall Cool Gentleman changes "virus" to "supervirus" and assumes no one will notice.

Tall Cool Gentlemen is definitely not cool and probably short. Also an idiot.

348 You're the teacher. No better person to ask: Why are your students doing so poorly?

We had two shutdowns. The one last year meant they had, at best, five packets of lessons delivered to their home or adapted to Google Classroom. The percentage of students who did the work was VERY low.

This year, they arrived at last year's level. About 20% of my students had learning disabilities; they came in lower than that. Reading comprehension was low; e.g. they couldn't "see" two sides in a compare/contrast article. They had never written an essay citing evidence. They thought essays were narrative essays - not unlike journalists who think all news articles are op/ed pieces.

Schools shut down again for over two months. We were ready this time. I scanned chapters & posted an audio version. I broke the 5-paragraph essay into separate assignments and made my own videos with step-by-step explanations. EVERY quiz was open-book. Half the kids did nothing; many parents got annoyed when I pointed it out. When we came back, there was an open-note test that only C- and Special Ed students passed.

Yes, just awful!
But also: remember Nadia Comenech and what she later revealed how she was raped?

I read a series of books by a defector from the Soviet GRU and he said that yes, all the girls were whores for the army and Party brass.

358 So a stupid negro doing stupid negro shit is surprising to you. That is why you lose. You are all incapable of seeing through the lie of equality. All one of your enemies has to do is call this report racist and you would trip over yourselves to take it down. All while deleting anyone who points this out in your comment section.
