Miami Skyscraper Partially Collapses Overnight; Officials Fear "Massive" Loss of Life

Terrible. At least one person is dead, and officials expect that number to rise dramatically as victims are found in the rubble.

Some may wonder if this is the result of a bomb. A friend of mine pointed out that any kind of bomb would have produced an explosive shockwave that everyone would have noticed. This building seems to have simply collapsed.

The building was just being inspected for structural integrity, as it just turned forty years old. It was built in 1981.

Burkett also described the building, built in 1981, as "not an old building." "There's not reason for this building to go down like that."

"It's less likely than a lightning strike. It just doesn't happen. You don't see building falling down in America," Burkett said.

But there are no reports of an explosion, so what else could it be?

One thing is certain: The multitude of Blue-Check Twitter General-Purpose Experts will be receiving their Ph.D.'s in both structural engineering and best practices in structural safety management, and will all be claiming, to man (or to a schman), that this was all Ron DeSantis' fault, as if he's on the head of the f*cking inspection crew or that he created the law that buildings have to be inspected after 40 years (rather than 30, or 35, or even 39, as the newly-minted Twitter Ph.D.'s will all be confidently informing us, picking any number smaller than 40 to pin the blame, somehow, on Ron DeSantis, Author of All Evils).

By the end of the day, the Blue-Check Twitter General-Purpose Experts, including noted Doctors of Twitter Science Dr. Guy P. Benson and Professor AllahPundit, will be calling this the DeSantis Collapse.

Video of the wreckage below.

One nice story: A ten-year-old boy was heard in the rubble, and was safely extricated.

The security cam video looks like those videos you see of buildings being imploded. It is utterly horrifying to watch it and realize that the building is occupied.

Some roof renovations have been underway and it's a center core building so the wild speculation is that something got weakened during the roof renovations and here we are.

60 A skyscraper is a tall continuously habitable building having multiple floors. Modern sources currently define skyscrapers as being at least 100 metres or 150 metres in height, though there is no universally accepted definition. Historically, the term first referred to buildings with between 10 and 20 stories when these types of buildings began to be constructed in the 1880s. Skyscrapers may host offices, hotels, residential spaces, and retail spaces. You may now continue.

Not to mention that when the southern San Andreas rips, LA's gonna jiggle like a bowl of jelly for minutes after the quake has passed. There was a simulation of how bad the shaking would be form a 7.8 hitting. New Madrid large event recurrence interval is estimated at 500yr+, so although that doesn't mean they WON'T have a big quake in the next 30 or so years, the probability is quite small.

208 There is exactly no way we can know the answer to why until a thorough investigation is done. I would suspect something at the top of the building since we have a pancake but it could just as easily been in issue with foundations, which I assume are either piers or caissons, since this is a beach location with crappy soil and almost no bearing capacity. For piers or caissons to fail, it would require either infiltration from sea water to crack the concrete and rust the rebar, or some sort of displacement, which would mean sinkhole or seismic activity (doubtful, there). Since the fault occurred along a joint in the building, it is also possible that water may have infiltrated along an expansion joint, particularly since the roof was finally being worked on, and that may have affected steel connections. Without seeing the structural design, those are my first impressions.

Yeah, it happens. Usually it's caught before a building collapses though.

As some of you know, I used to work residential construction, and I had more than one foundation pour where the concrete was either way too soupy or started to harden like immediately, and everything had to be jack hammered out and we had to start all over again.

Posted by: Harry Paratestes at June 24, 2021 12:57 PM (UPoLF)

Generally when there is a 90 degree angle in a building, you design it with an expansion joint. In seismic areas, it's a seismic joint, but even the wind load will make a building bend somewhat and you don't want that cracking the exterior or the structure, either. I'm sure there is a joint between what fell and what didn't. In this case, it is probably a blessing, although you don't usually put in a joint thinking about collapse. Without the joint, the whole thing would have pancaked.

291 Yeah, it happens. Usually it's caught before a building collapses though.

As some of you know, I used to work residential construction, and I had more than one foundation pour where the concrete was either way too soupy or started to harden like immediately, and everything had to be jack hammered out and we had to start all over again.

I've heard horror stories about big commercial buildings having the same problem (but on a much bigger scale, obviously.)

They were also framed with a lot of weigh bearing on the outside walls.

It was a pretty cool engineering feat at the time that we finally had steel strong enough to frame an entire building like that. No one really thought about what that would mean if a fucking 757 crashed in to the outside wall at 400 mph though.

But compare the construction of the twin towers to, say, the empire state building. Which might be the most over engineered building in the history of the world, and could probably eat a 757 or two for breakfast. Over engineering is not always the worst thing in the world.

True. Floods are localized events that can easily happen back-to-back. With earthquakes, you have stress energy stored over hundreds or thousands of years that gets partially or fully realeased in a large event, so other than stress that gets put on parts of the fault that didn't move or other nearby faults, that part of the fault is spent until the stress builds up again. 1811-1812, 3 large quakes, but undoubtely not all on the same part of the (rather complex) New Madrid system.

Yeah, but B-25's aren't that big, and it was flying slowly.

But, your point stands. IIRC, they had to do some masonry work, but other than that, the building was fine.

(I nerded out one day reading about how they framed the ESB, it's absolutely nuts. Steel frame all around, including internally built structure, cement, bricks, and then the stone facade. But I guess it makes sense to realllly overengineer something if it's one of the first massive sky scrapers in existence.)

It is potentially the most dangerous fault in North America if not the world. The last time it hit it rerouted the Mississippi which ran backward for a while. Waterfalls in the Mississippi were reported. In some places, the surface wave vibrations liquified soil causing trees and stuff to sink. Some surface layers inverted bringing tar and sand up to the surface over large areas. Bodies of water heated up. Lightening shot up into the sky. It was reported that it caused the liberty bell in PA to swing but that seems unlikely. The worker was tightening a bolt when it cracked and caused him to fall to his death. Total structural collapse could be an outcome too. In February 2017, a multistory building in Kanpur, India, collapsed and killed three people. According to officials, the building collapsed under its own weight and the cause was indicated to be substandard construction materials."

I don't remember the exact date, but when the Apollo program wound down a lot of engineers were out of work and some, maybe more than some, tried their hand at structural engineering. There was a large building failure in Florida caused by punching shear in concrete slabs and as I recall that was the start of things really tightening up code wise and license wise in Florida. 1981 would be about right for that timing, however it would be very unusual for a building not showing any signs of distress to suddenly collapse by itself. Going to need to wait a few months until we know.

390 Judging from the pictures of the design and from the video of it falling, the piers/columns holding it up likely collapsed and then the whole building came down with it.
The strength of columns were likely degraded due to rusted rebar. I would guess the concrete porosity was far too high and wasn't treated properly through the years to prevent moisture penetration of the concrete.

That would be my intial assumption as an FA Engineer based on observation and what is known now.

424 >>> I don't remember the exact date, but when the Apollo program wound down a lot of engineers were out of work and some, maybe more than some, tried their hand at structural engineering.

Suggesting a child hide things in their parents' room is exactly the same logic that was used by Colonial Europeans to take land from indigenous peoples without compensation. And in some cases through violence. In doing so you perpetuate power through terror, a philosophy utilized by the Nazis and in more modern times, Donald Trump.

Not if it's designed right. More mass hurts terribly when it comes to earthquakes, so engineers have a huge incentive to stay lighter.

Posted by: Tonypete at June 24, 2021 01:53 PM (Rvt88)

588 Sinkholes are rare that close to a sandy beach (but not impossible). If you look at the video of the actual collapse, the center collapses first - and very quickly. What ever it was it was very quick. This was either a sinkhole, a carefully designed deliberate implosion or maybe corroded rebar giving way at the same time in multiple pylons. If corroded rebar went in one pylon, the building would not have collapsed, but maybe there were several pylons that were badly corroded inside, and all it took was for one pylon to go, and the rest followed. What is CERTAIN is the the MSM will blame DeSantis in some way.

Hyatt collapsed because they modified the way the skybridges were hung. All three levels were supposed to hang from a single long rod; the gc wanted to change the detail because threading the nut up 30 feet to support the level was a pain. So they broke the hangers into sections.

So instead of the topmost level being supported by the hanger rod, it had to carry the two levels below it.

602 Just to put a number on "massive," it looks like 5 to 8 apartments per story collapsed, depending on the size, and 12 stories. That works out to 60 to 100 apartments.

So maybe 100, 150 people inside when it collapsed. Could be much less if not fully occupied. Could be much more if the apts. had large families.

608 My prediction -- the media will find that a state agency that does building inspections asked for more money in the budget than DeSantis and the Republicans authorized, and they'll do a "raises questions" smear tactic to plant the idea that it had something to do with the building collapse. A leftwing columnist in Minnesota basically followed that template in blaming a bridge collapse in the Twin Cities on Republicans.
