27 The title of the group refers to the "Camden Town Murder" case of 1907. On 11 September Emily Dimmock, a part-time prostitute cheating on her partner, was murdered in her home at Agar Grove (then St Paul's Road), Camden, having gone there from The Eagle public house, Royal College Street. After sex, the man had slit her throat open while she was asleep, then left in the morning.

The murder became an ongoing source of prurient sensationalism in the press. For several years Sickert had already been painting lugubrious female nudes on beds, and continued to do so, deliberately challenging the conventional approach to life painting ... giving four of them, which included a male figure, the title, The Camden Town Murder, and causing a controversy, which ensured attention for his work

The title made me go look - it was odd. And indeed, he appears to have had a knack for marketing.

This impotency had scarred him emotionally and had left him with a pathological hatred of women which, in time, led him to carry out a series of murders in the East End of London which became known as the Jack the Ripper murders."

That is old and busted. The new way is to establish an NGO partnership with the Fe'ral Government to help integrate refugees and immigrants. That way you get paid twice, regular rent from the taxpayer, and money for the johns who pay for the young children brought in via coyotes. Then you get the respect and admiration of doing a social good, and no one questions what happens to the dead bodies once the product goes beyond its shelf life.

Posted by: JuJuBee at June 21, 2021 08:59 AM (mNhhD)

84 OK, short version:
The "Sickert is the Ripper" theory began sometime in the early 1970s when a man named Joseph Gorman claimed he was the illegitimate son of Walter Sickert and that Sickert was one of a trio - the others being royal physician Sir William Gull and coachman John Netley - who went around the East End murdering the "canonical five" Ripper victims because they were witnesses to the illegitimate marriage of Albert Edward, Duke of Clarence (Edward VII's oldest son) to a commoner named Annie Crook.

Since Annie and Eddy's child would be in line for the throne, Annie needed to be disposed of and the witnesses silenced.

92 The theory was put into print by Steven Knight in his book Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution, and has been the basis of the movies From Hell and Murder by Decree as well as the Michael Caine / Jane Seymour made-for-TV series Jack the Ripper.

But there is no supporting evidence. An "Annie Crook" matching the details has never been found. Eddy cannot be placed in the East End, the stories of a psychic identifying Gull as the Ripper have no foundation in fact and even Gorman himself has changed, elaborated or denied his story over the years.

In short, the "Walter Sickert" theory is an outgrowth of Joseph Gorman's fantasies and Patricia Cornwell's theory is as probable as that in the book Jack the Ripper: 'Light-Hearted Friend,' which posits that Lewis Carroll was the Ripper.

The was a TV special years ago where she examined the JtR murders. She was going to do a DNA test on one of the stamps from the Ripper letters and test it against Sickert's. It was to be the BIG REVEAL at the end. It ended up not matching and was very much like Geraldo's Al Capone's Vault moment.

It's much too long to go into, but in short, the shawl - supposed to have belonged to victim Catherine Eddowes - has no verifiable chain of custody.

But 'the Polish guy,' Aaron Kosminski (as named by Chief Inspector Donald Swanson and put forward most convincingly by author Paul Begg in his Jack the Ripper: The Uncensored Facts) is the most likely candidate as Saucy Jack, bearing in mind that absolute proof will probably never be found.

It was a mystery they couldn't solve and the investigation kept getting bigger and bigger, with more agencies and more manpower to go find the country's most prolific serial killer.

Then someone walked the evidence backward and found that all of the swabs had the same manufacturer, and the manufacturer had an undetected process control problem on one line that resulted in contamination, and that a lot of swabs were contaminated with the DNA of a line worker who never missed a day of work.

I've been watching this British show, 'Murder, Mystery and My Family'. They take old murder cases, some over 100 years old, and look at the case to see if there is any evidence for a current judge to rule the verdict 'unsafe'. It's basically a reversal of the death penalty that was carried out. Does nothing for the person who was hanged but it's for the family members.

It's fascinating and unbelievable how quickly they hung people. Many with 1 day trial, 15 mins. of deliberation...2 weeks to hanging, or less. And a lot of the defendants had no legal representation.

The system went down due to a high-temperature problem (too hot, so the system shut itself down). The temperature in the server room was rock-solid according to all sensors all the time, the HVAC was fine, etc. No answers.

The admin finally decided to go hands-on. He set up in the server room for an all-nighter to see what happened that they were missing. What they missed was the janitor parking his cart in front of the server and the spare trash bags hanging over the side sucking onto the server's air inlet...

True enough, especially since the PBS series not only adapted the original stories, but went to the extent of having Holmes wear period clothes other than a deerstalker cap. He wears a straw trilby in one episode set in the summertime, I think. Plus they showed him smoking cigarettes as well as the eternal pipe -- which Holmes did in at least the first novel.

316 UNEXPECTED ROOT-CAUSE ANALYSIS STORIES:

Heard this one nearly 20 years ago when I was a new-hire...

There was a mystery on the F-16 production line when suddenly a length of conduit started getting flagged as out-of-spec by the installer. The usual "call in the engineers" processes were deployed, and they couldn't find anything. The drawings and the spec for this piece of pipe hadn't been changed in decades, but sure enough, the pieces were being cut to design, but were an inch and a half too long to properly fit on the aircraft.

Finally, one of the engineers asks the guy how long this had been going on. The guy says, "ever since I started in this job." Turns out -- the previous guy who had been cutting and installing this conduit FOREVER finally retired, and this guy was the replacement. The previous guy simply knew that the spec was wrong, and to cut this piece an inch and a half shorter than the instructions said. Never wrote it down anywhere. Never told anyone.

342 333 Time Travel can work, but it needs to be seriously considered, even in lighter works. The mechanics have to be tight, otherwise it's just a whole bunch of "Why didn't he?" stuff.

**nods** If I ever do finish the outline, I'll send it your way. I'm more of a "longing for the past" Jack Finney type, but don't like the idea of going somewhere and wishing yourself into the past (unless it turns out to be a huge hallucination).

I like Midnight in Paris along these lines, though I think Allen ended the movie wrong. I think Wilson should have followed Cotillard backwards to the Belle Epoque, getting further sucked into nostalgia with the implication that it was never ending.

Good title! And I guess the rationale would be that the very act of traveling into the past, against the stream of time as it were, disturbs the stream. As if you were running a powerboat upstream. There's going to be ripples or waves, or worse.

346 Time travel is possible, the problem is that when you go back in time the Earth isn't there, since the Earth is constantly traveling through space with a high velocity, all you'll encounter in the past is the vacuum of space which the Earth hasn't reached yet.

So, in my hometown, there's a popular breakfast joint called the Cutthroat Cafe, after the fish.

One day, my friend's dad was eating there after having an acrimonious dispute with a local lowlife who was refusing to pay him for a 4-wheeler he purchased from him. This stupid lunatic walked through the door and cut his throat from behind while he was eating.*

I thought that was a little on-the-nose.

*He miraculously survived. Later, one of the attacker's wives shot him, and was acquitted because everyone hated this bastard so much. He also miraculously survived that as well.

The classic example from management classes is:
One of the car manufacturers had problems with the rear window of a sedan leaking, and on review they found some of the windows did not leak, and indicated an error in installation by the line workers. They researched the vehicle manufacturing information and determined the line that wasn't leaking.
They reviewed the procedures and watched the installers there and found one guy not following the procedure for installing the rubber gasket for the window, and asked, why are you not following procedure, and he told them if you follow the procedure the windows will leak.

403 This was one of the paintings that Patricia Cornwell used to try to argue that Sickert was Jack the Ripper. Problem was that the viewer's interpretation is shaped by which title Sickert used. "The Camden Town Murderer" suggests the woman is dead and the man killed her. The alternate title shows a wife comforting her husband during a time of trouble. Sickert painted the picture while renting rooms that the landlady was convinced had once been rented by Jack the Ripper, and told Sickert the tale. Cornwell has been roundly abused for her lack of artistic knowledge and her complete lack of logic in trying to frame Sickert as the killer (he was in France with his mother and older brother at the time of the Ripper killings).
