I’ve done this before, but here is some more clever street art. I love that an anonymous artist puts his talent and creativity into a fleeting work of art, that for a just short while will provide smiles to those passing by.

FIELD MARSHALL MONTGOMERY’S WWII DOUBLE

General Montgomery.JPG

Prior to the D-Day Invasion in 1944, the Allies sought to divert German troops from Normandy by leading them to think the invasion would happen elsewhere. One of the ruses was sending a double of British Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery around the Mediterranean to talk up war plans in that theater.

Actor M.E. Clifton James looked the part, and with his acting ability he could play the part.
He actually met Monty so he could learn his mannerisms.

After an outing and lunch, James had a short meeting directly with Montgomery to learn the tone and cadence of his voice. It was an easy conversation, and even James was struck by their resemblance. “All I had to do,” he later wrote, “was to broaden my moustache, slightly whiten my greying hair—and I was General Montgomery.”

After the war, Mr. James starred in a 1958 movie about his role of a lifetime – “I Was Monty’s Double.”

REYNOLDS’ LAW & DEFERRED GRATIFICATION

Law Professor Glenn Reynolds (aka “Instapundit” succinctly explained the futility of trying to give people a middle-class lifestyle if they are not required to earn it. The following is now known as “Reynolds’ Law.”

The government decides to try to increase the middle class by subsidizing things that middle class people have: If middle-class people go to college and own homes, then surely if more people go to college and own homes, we’ll have more middle-class people. But homeownership and college aren’t causes of middle-class status, they’re markers for possessing the kinds of traits — self-discipline, the ability to defer gratification, etc. — that let you enter, and stay, in the middle class. Subsidizing the markers doesn’t produce the traits; if anything, it undermines them.

Mrs. Throckmorton and I occasionally reflect on our barely-scraping-by days, and the discipline it took back then so that we can now enjoy the fruits of middle-class life. However, it is sometimes still difficult to change our behaviors and start indulging in some gratifications which no longer stretch our budget. In my 20s, my nightly salad was iceberg lettuce, croutons, and cheap Italian dressing. It took many years before I felt affluent enough to add blue cheese to the nightly salad, and I just realized that to this day I’m still treating Butter Lettuce like a luxury item only to be enjoyed on rare and special occasions. On my next grocery run I’m getting some Butter Lettuce, by golly.

What about you? What are some items you kept denying yourself out of habitual discipline, long after you could actually afford to enjoy them?

BUZZ PHRASE INSULTS FROM THE ‘70s

Welcome Back Kotter board game.JPG

For some weird reason, sitcoms in the 1970s liked to create a buzz phrase insult, and one of the highlights of each episode was when the buzz phrase was said. “Sit on it” from Happy Days became a popular insult in my grade school circle of friends. And though we all loved Welcome Back Kotter, “Up Your Nose With A Rubber Hose” never really gained traction with my friends.

So, if any of you go straight to the comments without reading tonight’s ONT content, you can Kiss My Grits.

THE KABOOM KIDS NATIONAL ANTHEM?

For all you Kaboom Kids out there, here’s a love song for you.

“You’re Not The Best, But You’re The Best That I Can Do” by Charlie Robison

So sit down here beside me girl and I’ll tell you what we will do

We're gonna twist them lids and hope our kids look more like me than you

And when that bottle’s finally empty, we're gonna tumble across the floor

And I'm gonna pray my imagination is gonna pull me through once more

Hey ‘Ettes: What’s a similar song from a woman’s perspective?

ART OF THE HORDE

As many of you have noticed, I very much appreciate art of the common man (and woman.) Moron reader “Reine” shared some of his artwork with me. He said that making these leaded glass panels is his retirement hobby. Now I need to read up on the difference between “stained glass” and “leaded glass.” Very impressive, Reine!

DON’T EAT THE YELLOW SNOW CONES AT MINUTE MAID PARK

I was a big Major League Baseball fan for most of my life - until they started wearing BLM stuff on their uniforms and plastering BLM logos all over stadiums in 2020. My favorite sport accusing me and fellow fans of being racists, and advocating for violence against police, was a pretty big turn off for me. I haven’t tuned in since the first weekend of the 2020 season. MLB’s ongoing left-wing activism (pulling the All-Star game from the state of Georgia) makes me happy to stay away.

But even if I never watch another pitch or visit another ballpark, I’ll never forget this great moment:

THE COLORADO - TEXAS TOMATO WAR

A weird (and fun) little tradition is the annual tomato war between Coloradans and Texans. For some reason, Coloradans got a little weary about the flood of Texans coming to Colorado each summer to escape the Texas heat, as well as the flood of Texans hitting Colorado’s ski slopes each winter. Colorado likes the Texas money, of course, just not the Texas swagger. I think Coloradans are also jealous of how well Texans dress the part when skiing.

Of course, Colorado really should have been fighting the California invasion. Texans visit, spend money, and then leave. Californians visit, then don’t leave, and then inflict their cultural rot.

Anyhow, word is that the 2021 Colorado vs Texas tomato war will be held in September in Chaffee County, CO.

6 Interesting comment about Reynolds' Law up above. Yeah, the middle-class is the "effect" of the traits necessary to achieve it, not the "cause." Giving someone a middle-class lifestyle and hoping that they will automatically morph into a middle-class person is wishful thinking at best and more akin to cargo-cult thinking.

12 Reynold's Law: I think diversity is another example. A meritocracy produces diversity because talent has no race. But the simple-minded sees the effect as the cause, mandating diversity and thereby destroying merit. Of course it didn't help that the Supreme Court gifted colleges with the diversity loophole, invented out of whole cloth, with which the ivory towers could racially discriminate with impunity. Big Mistake.

Agreed. Another example of cargo-cult thinking, only seeing the RESULT of the steps necessary to achieve diversity, but never really understanding the CAUSE of true diversity.

20 Giving someone a middle-class lifestyle and hoping that they will automatically morph into a middle-class person is wishful thinking at best and more akin to cargo-cult thinking.

A lot of that in education, too. Take a bunch of people who are really good at math and see how they do it. Then replace the way they learned math with how they do it now.

And then double down when it turns out kids don’t learn math well under that system.

Cargo cult thinking is the default for humans. It takes training to think civilized.

34 The really amazing thing is when you realize that Happy Days ran on the concept of the amazing wonderful world of the past, which past was circa 20-15 years earlier than when the show was in first run. Imagine a show today that had the gimmick of being set in those far off wonderful days of 2001-2006 or so. They'd have to work really hard to have you notice it was even set in the past.

Once a week we'd empty our two fridge's of leftovers (we were both single guys) and get the $0.99 Chef BoyRDee pizza kit and make a "Leftover Pizza"; pork & beans, green beans, lettuce, tomato, banana, you name it, it went on the pizza. 88 Math is another example - people noticed that kids who take a lot of extra (voluntary) math courses in high school do better in college. Well, it can't possibly be that those kids are working harder, have more engaged parents, seek out challenge, etc. No, it must be those 50 minutes spent in Algebra II every day. So let's mandate EVERYONE take Algebra II!

...Well that didn't work so well. Okay, let's mandate everyone PASS Algebra II!

...Looks like we might need to add an Algebra III class to cover all the stuff we had to take out of Algebra II to get the kids to pass.

...Say...the kids taking Algebra III seem to do better than the kids who don't...

101 You know, I'm worth just under 5 million now and still have trouble spending money.

I'm even working a second job as I type this. I grew up poor-ish, did four years in the Army, got an engineering degree after, have been a compulsive saver... all good things. But now sometimes I feel like Ebenezer Scrooge just counting my money.

So yeah, completely understand the difficulty of giving up the spendthrift habits.

Although, I made an impromptu diamond purchase (Costco) for my wife's birthday this week. But that was more because I forgot her birthday.

Interestingly, I eat better now because I know how to cook, and buy quality ingredients. I'll eat out because my wife likes too, but it's not really my thing unless it's a really good restaurant, namely one that serves better food than I can make myself. Most American restaurants don't qualify.

Name brand potato chips

I remember all too well when I lived on boiled potatoes with butter or, alternatively, macaroni and cheese. The store by my house would sell you one stick of butter rather than the whole pound box. That would have to last a week. If I was flush, I'd buy a small container of sour cream to liven things up or maybe a package of hot dogs.

Yes, like real dry salamis, and blue stilton. They show up seasonally at Aldi. They experiment with new products too, most of which don't catch on. They can never seem to get the flavors of Asian food right. Reminds me of the episode of Breaking Bad with the Madrigal HQ taste-testing.

Aldi's blue stilton is as good as any you can get anywhere else in town, IF you can find it elsewhere, and costs less than half as much. (But stay far away from Aldi's "white stilton" with fruit mixed into it!! That's puke, that is.)

300 I remember an interesting analysis of wealth in America. First they showed some of the pretty standard charts you see showing income inequality - and yep you see "the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor"
But then they parsed the data to include age. And what you see is that people get wealthier as they get older - who the rich and poor are is NOT static.

So the issue isn't that we've got a permanent poor and permanent rich class (well not yet). The issue is that it takes time for people to accumulate wealth. The every decreasing number of kids people have would, amusingly, take care of even that - if we stopped importing third world peasants who have to start the cycle from scratch.

However, it was those that made them their fortune. They've been accused of seeding skid row with free samples of their products, such as Thunderbird. Also, dropping empty bottle in various skid rows to promote brand awareness.

Good preparatory experience.

As a contractor in KSA, I (and others) made Sid (short version of Arabic Siddique, which means "Friend").

Water, sugar, bakers yeast, then distilled on the stove top. Very crude and rough rum. Got the job done though.

One guy had a real M&M Enterprises thing going on. Cleared $10K a month. 75% of the houseboys were his labor force and he had every rooftop in the housing compound cooking mash. Over there, the sun does just fine for the cooking.

My supervisor and I (both with engineering education) ginned up a filtration unit using aquarium filters. Our hooch carried a premium. Decent ersatz kahlua and some berry-ized cordials for the contract nurses.

334 A lot of states will tell you after CA, the big wine production states in order are WA, OR, NY, VA and TX I think these days. I might not have the list exactly right because it does change a bit. And then also states will argue over production vs the number of Vineyards. I think VA is way up there if you are counting vineyards. With all that said, I mention this because I read long ago that Gallo Vineyards alone produce more wine than any other state.
Also, I used to invest in a company called Constellation Brands, ticker symbol STZ. They kicked butt for years to be honest. They are mostly known today for owning Corona distribution in the USA. That is not a bad gig to be honest. But before that they were known for low rent wines, ripples, MD, that kind of stuff. Maybe it was low end, but they made a killing on it.

Got ya. A Brood X emergence is quite an experience for 4-6 weeks. I already miss the noise. Their weird fluttering style of flying is funny to watch. And they seem to really enjoy kamikaze flights into car windshields and front grills!

Sometimes, not much.

There are "craft" moonshiners who do distill for flavor rather than pure alcohol, but they're thin on the ground nowadays.

I've seen home distillation kits on the market. Buying one probably gets you on some kind of list.

383 Things I have denied myself long after I could get a better one.
A Grill, as a single and shortly after getting married, I bought a cheap table top grill. About 10 years ago I bought a standard webber kettle grill and it has fallen apart. Currently is is being held up by two saw horses since the legs fell off (more like rusted off) of it. About 5 or 6 years ago I looked up and downloaded plans for a UDS (Ugly Drum Smoker). It literally is a 55 gallon drum that is an upright smoker, but I absolutely love and cherish them both. I made Bacon Wrapped Chicken Kabobs tonight on the Webber, And I will be smoking a pork shoulder this week in the smoker and I have made Turkeys for Thanksgiving in it, and I was told if I make it next year my sister inlaw will skip going to the other family to have the turkey.
I have seen the Smokey Joe Bronco smoker for 250.00 but I am like, nah to much I will think about getting one when my drum smoker collapses, but that will take another 10 to 20 years before the metal fatigues enough because the temps never really get above 300 degrees.

I've also heard that Sanders claimed his mother was a terrible cook.

they have made a lot of changes over the last few years. I think they got rid of some of their low end brands for some reason. They have even invested in pot as I recall. But the key for them is Modelo and Corona. It used to be the very low end wines, not Mondavi, but more Wild Irish Rose and such.

I think Gallo has about 25% market share of wine in the US, under a shit-ton of various brand names. Barefoot is owned by Gallo.

Boone's Farm replaced Ripple, according to what I was reading. They changed it today to "malt based" because of state tax laws or something.

Ripple was only about 11% alcohol by volume, compared to Night Train which is 18%. Thunderbird varied from 13 - 18%.

Ripple was popular amongst underaged drinkers, high school and college students at the peak of its run. They are accusations that Gallo sort of helped this along with its "marketing".

Ernest Gallo was the marketing man, and he was proud of his success. Story was he was in Atlanta, and to prove his point, drove out into one of low end sections, saw some bum on the street, and shouted, "What's the word?"

The bum immediately replied, "Thunderbird". Gallo was very proud of that.

There was fellow around here, named "Mookie". He did odd jobs, you might say. I hired him occasionally. One of his conditions was to be paid money of course (he preferred $1 bills, or as small as you could manage. It made his wallet fatter. I kid you not).

But also, he wanted to be paid in liquor. At quitting time, you had to run to the ABC store, and buy him his choice.

He was a fan of the "fortified wines". I was warned under no circumstances let him have any Mad Dog 20/20. He'll get wild and want to fight. Anything else if fine, but no MD 20/20.

Watch the biopic I mentioned. Or any documentary about INXS / Michael Hutchence.

There was an incident in the early 90s when he was dating Helena Christensen (lucky man, he was!) -- I think involving a cab driver. MH fell and suffered some serious head trauma. It affected his demeanor significantly. Then he got involved with the wacko Paula Yates. There was a lot of drama involving custody of her kids - who were from her time with Bob Geldof. She was supposed to visit him with the kids (including the daughter they had together) the day he died. Sad story - and an incredible talent gone too soon

Mookie has been dead for maybe 15 years, I think, the way time is flying. I'm trying to remember the details. He was up here, living in a shack of a trailer owned by his sister and her husband. From what I was told, he was actually making good money as a bulldozer operator downstate, but suffered some sort of head injury, and he wasn't right in the head since.

His sister "took care of him", which included taking all of his disability and other govt. assistance checks, from what I gathered.

He was actually a very good worker, quite jovial. You needed to be there with him all the time, but that's how he made spending money.

You have all the ones that matter.

I also have quite a few, shall we say, "unofficial" live recordings. One of them is from Nov 1985 -- an incredible performance of pre-Kick material. Show opens with a really good performance of "Johnson's Aeroplane". I listen to that show quite often.

Staring decisis

Posted by: Justice Potter Stewart at June 19, 2021 11:32 PM (QzkSJ)

574 The Brits in WWII were at their zenith for guile, audacity, and smarts. The Monty impersonator was one example, but it was constant. Their skill intersected with an adversary (Germany) afflicted with amateurism and traitors, thus the results were spectacular.

"Double Cross" by Ben MacIntyre is a nice accessible look at some of their most amazing successes.

They were so successful, their double agents so good, that Ike actually OK'd having a star double send accurate info about D-Day (yes) to his handlers in Spain - but too late for it to matter (they had an intimate understanding of the mechanics and operations of German intelligence). All in order to further legitimate their double agent - he had access to the actual invasion plan!

Turns out the (characteristically) sloppy German handlers in Madrid failed to receive and forward his bombshell message in a timely way - but his legitimacy was confirmed anyway. So much so that he continued to feed misleading "intel" to the krauts for a few weeks after the landings, possibly material to keeping the 15th Panzer Army in Pas de Calais so long.

607 Zettai, they tried (spoofing the krauts into thinking it was Sardinia, not Sicily), but the German leadership had long since correctly figured out that Sicily was the only sensible option for the Allies. Well - the *top* of the leadership still expected Greece or the Balkans, but the operational leadership was focused on Sicily. Just reading a book about it now ("Sicily '43"). The very first version of the Special Boat Service, did, I think, do a diversionary attack on Sardinia.

Does the conductor of an orchestra actually perform any real function at a live performance besides looking like a giant dork? Channel Islands, yes knew they were occupied, didn't think of camps there as a particular issue vs. just, you know, invaded and occupied.

As to insulting Goring, this was May 1943, not February 1945. Yes, Sicily, so the emperor was far away. But, Kesselring. In any case, Kesselring had just heard the squadron commander describe how abandoned, worn out, and poorly supported his unit was, and Smiling Albert just grunted something about carrying on, and maybe he should invite the Reichsfuhrer Goring to visit, to restore standards.

The squadron commander replied that they didn't have any chairs that could handle Goring's weight.

Wobbly planet, slightly elliptical orbit (not perfectly circular), average day length roughly 24 hours and 30 seconds, etc. Earliest sunrise is roughly a week before summer solstice, and the latest sunset is reflected all mirror image like one week after solstice.

Yes, the notions of seasons and the definition of a "day" and a "year" get quite complex. If the earth were in a perfectly circular orbit, and her axis of rotation were constant/fixed and not precessing, things would be very simple.

However, they are not, and things are complicated. The Earth's orbit is very close to circular. Mars is eliptical enough that things are "obvious". We're sort of in the bad spot were were close enough to circular to mask the problems at first blush, but yet different from circular enough that problems cause errors to add up quickly enough to notice.

The leap year cycle of the Gregorian calendar has 100 and 400 year cycles as well.

The 4 yr cycle overcorrects and about every 100 years, that's close to another day overshoot. So every 100 year multiple, we skip a leap year. As in 2000. But that overcorrects itself in the opposite direction. So every 400 year multiple, we must not skip the 100 year leap year.

But that still overcorrects. But they didn't define any longer cycles, so the Gregorian will get out sync with the seasons on the order of the 10K year scale.

We'll deal with that when we get there I assume. We won't have to worry for a long time.

Like they'd better serve the public if they were tied up in a chair, mouths duct taped shut and left to rot in a dank basement or cellar somewhere."

Yah back at my church, we had a lady who chaired the church's outreach program to needy families. She was awesome at is. Then a GOP Banker donated a bunch on money to build the new chapel, (Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, in Dallas) and suddenly his trophy wife replaced her.

She had no idea how to run the show, and poor families suffered for it. But apparently it was more important to get that "Chairwoman, LLUMC Outreach" on her letterhead for the social hierarchy points. Make me sick.

It was more like a country club than a church anyway. But that's the stereotype I remember when you say "wives of powerful Republicans".

Louie Gohmert does not think we can change the Moon's orbit. His point was that much of this climate change shit is well beyond anything we control. So, say you want to change things, well why don't you alter the Moon's orbit.
