Quick Hits: I am Not Groot, Groot's a Crazy Bitch Edition

Kevin Hart, #cancelled before his Oscars-hosting gig after years old tweets, has a special word for cancel-cultists.

While promoting his new Netflix film Fatherhood, Kevin Hart, the highest-earning stand-up comic in the world, claimed he'd been canceled "three or four times" over his career.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times, Hart said he "personally doesn't give a s---" about cancel culture before speaking at length about the hotly debated subject.

"If somebody has done something truly damaging then, absolutely, a consequence should be attached," Hart said. "But when you just talk about… nonsense? When you're talking, 'Someone said! They need to be taken [down]!' Shut the f--- up! What are you talking about?"

When the Oscars committee demanded he apologize, he stepped down, leaving them without a host with only weeks until the little-watched industry f***boy party. If I remember right, they kinda begged him to do it and he said something like "Nah, I don't want to bring your show down with my toxicness." Or at least, that was the implied message.

Former Vice President Biden's Navy chief defends putting hardcore black racist and racial separatist Ibram X. Khendi on the Navy's recommended reading list.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael Gilday on Tuesday defended putting Ibram X. Kendi's book How to Be an Anti-Racist on the Navy’s list of books every United States sailor should read, under grilling from Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Banks (R-IN) at a House hearing.

Banks, a U.S. Navy reservist, began by asking Gilday if he agreed with Kendi’s past statements and views in his book that Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett is a "white colonizer" because she adopted two children from Haiti, and that capitalism is essentially racist.

Gilday responded, "Here's what I know, Congressman. There’s racism in the United States Navy."

Well, there's more of it when you recommend people read Black Hitler's execrable texts.

...

Banks asked Gilday if he agreed with Kendi's statements that white people are a different breed of humans and are responsible for the AIDS virus.

Gilday responded: "Sir, I'd have to understand the context in which the statements were made. I'm not going to sit here and defend cherry-picked quotes from somebody’s book. This is a bigger issue than somebody's book. What this is really about is trying to paint the United States military, and in this case, the United States Navy is weak, as woke... We are not weak."

But you are woke, eh?

Last year, the Chicago Tribune reported that Chicago mayor and Noted Fat Groot Lori Lightfoot was having trouble filling positions and keeping positions filled because of her extremely bitchy, entitled behavior and angry outbursts.

A FOIA request now discloses this email sent to all staff by Groot, proving the stories true.

Also proving that she almost certainly has a serious psychological condition.

Look at all this angry -- psychotic! -- repetition and mentally-unstable exclamation points.

Remember how we had to legalize marijuana because of how much money it would create in tax revenue which we could use to fund our #Woke Brainwashing government schools?

Yeah, well:

Tater throws a book party for himself, and it's filled with jerkoffs.

True Conservative, author of the "Axis of Evil" political slogan, and Bushie David Frum:

The neocons only have one move: Calling you a terrorist if you disagree with them.

You were formerly a terrorist if you did not vote for (neocon) Republicans.

Now you're a terrorist if you don't vote for Democrats.

They all style themselves very serious intellectuals but their only arguments consist of the most putrid, juvenile taunting.

And in "Hollywood has no ideas" news: Yes, Disney is going to make another prequel which casts a villain in a sympathetic light.

Even after their latest attempt to repackage old characters in slightly new movies, Cruella, opened to disappointing box office.

But what else do they have?

Banks should have demanded proof of that idiot's claim about "racism in the US Navy today". Examples. Names, places, dates. Evidence. Proof.

He should have also said that American citizens and families with Navy servicemembers should be appalled that such an unfit person had been placed at the top of Navy command.

"the house of ideas" huh

Remember how we had to legalize marijuana because of how much money it would create in tax revenue which we could use to fund our #Woke Brainwashing government schools?

Oregon is actually aswim in money from pot taxing. There's a "dispensary" on nearly every commercial block in the city, its insane. I thought most would be closed in a year, but instead, they are fixing up their cheap locations to be nicer looking, fancier, better more professional signs, etc.

Oregon has a little thing in the state constitution that the legislature has to provide a budget each year and if they pull in more revenue than the predicted budget cost then the excess collected revenue comes back to the citizens in tax refunds the following year.

This is, shall we say, biting them in the posterior pretty hard lately.

16-8 has been pretty common for a while, and has been discussed on this site. The idea is that a) your body finishes digestion after about 12 hours, so you return to fasting hormone levels and your body starts burning fat after that, and b) eating in an eight hour window makes it difficult to overeat, which reduces your total calories.

I've been doing the 16-8 (actually closer to 18-6 most days) for roughly 19 months and I'm down from 225 to 186, and 2 inches off my waist. You are correct about the math part however, to make it work you need to eat what you would normally eat in that time frame, not what you would normally eat in a 24 hour period. The other thing I've found with it is that your appetite is depressed so in the time window when you can eat you don't really want to.

She's complaining that her staff have scheduled so many meetings and other events that she doesn't have time back in her office to do other work. It's a legitimate complaint, but one that she could easily handle by telling her scheduler to limit her public events to X hours per week, coordinate with staff sections so that meetings are limited and clustered together, and block out specific times where she is not to be disturbed.

This is basic leadership stuff.

102 75 Disney is just floundering from one flop to the next. How many hits below the waterline can the Mouse take? Given: (1) that Lucasfilm managed to turn a license to print money (Star Wars) into a liability; (2) that Marvel's upcoming M-SHE-U Phase 4 has every appearance of being hot garbage, and; (3) the Disney+ releases of Cruella and Loki are being panned, what's left? Disney is going to have two solid years of flops.
Posted by: Revenant at June 16, 2021 01:55 PM (glSEb)

=========

1) Star Wars has been profitable. Maybe not as profitable as some people want, but it's definitely been profitable.
2)Marvel isn't losing any money yet. There's a lot of assuming that Marvel is dead, though there's been no evidence to support this yet. Wandavision had huge numbers, and Loki's premiere was the best premiere on Disney+. We'll see how Black Widow does, but Disney's going to be pulling a lot of cash in directly through the premiere access ($30 per household) instead of the box office, like how Mulan made $260 million in its first week that it didn't need to share with theaters.

I'm not rooting for Disney, but it's far stronger than some people want to admit.

148 @102

I know we've gone over this before, Star Wars has not turned a profit for Disney, it may in the future but it hasn't so far.

Remember you have to account for the 4 plus billion dollar upfront hit for the purchase, and making films isn't free, they cost money to make, and the money they have been making on the IP has been going down precipitously.

So to make a profit they first have to climb out of a 4 billion dollar whole.

It's still in the red. The cost of acquisition was $4.05 BILLION, and each film cost something like $600+ million to make and market. Solo was so nice they made it twice.

in addition, people always forget that box office is reduced by the cut given to the actual theatrical distributors, and foreign theatrical cuts are about 50% of box office, and China takes about 60%.

So no, the Star Wars acquisition is not profitable yet. It probably won't be.

Solo lost money, but the trend is still valid: 4 movies in a row each making less, ending with a loss, then one that made 520 million, less than the previous episode despite huge buzz at being the final in the series and the wrap up for fans (and even less than Episode VII). Downward trend either way.

Bender's not really wrong about its intent. It's about trying to package the Founding Fathers in a way that's appealing to modern hip audiences. There are lines here and there about "immigrants are the awesomest" because Hamilton and Lafayette weren't born in America, but that's really the extent of the wokeness in terms of the script.

I just found it plodding drama with nothing to hang onto because it's about capturing a man's entire life while never allowing a single stain on his character. It's dull.

Sigh. Again with the misunderstandings on this topic. I'm starting to think that it's deliberate.

If McClane's son is a transmale who is in transition and is attracted to women, this would *not* make him a lesbian. It makes him a transgendered heterosexual. Prior to his transition, he was a cisgendered homosexual.

This is not that hard and the disinformation being sown here has long since transitioned (get it?) from annoying to distressing. There is no way to improve the mental health of transpeople if you continue to otherize them through this kind of snarky ignorance. The suicide rates of transpeople are already dangerously high, and this kind of rhetoric is literally violence against them by continuing their social pathologization.

Read a book, learn your terms, and be respectful. Be better. It isn't that hard.

I don't know if I buy the numbers.

Here's how that game works: a major studio owns hundreds of c-corps who are in charge of various things. So one will own the IP. One will buy advertising. One will be make up. One will be catering. Etc. etc. then they grossly overcharge each other on paper to massively inflate the cost of making the movie, and then they disperse the income as it comes in to massive undersell the amount of income.

I'm sure there's some tax avoidance involved, but it's mostly to screw over the "talent" (actors / directors / producers / writers / whatever) in their contracts with the studio.

They're not really doing anything super illegal (although I'm sure they flirt with the line of illegal all the time), but there's a reason why the term "hollywood accounting" exists.

Incidentally, record labels have long been accused of doing the same thing to screw over musicians.

The Force Awakens cost over 300 million to make, add in print and advertising the costs are nearly 600 million, that put them roughly 5 billion in the hole, it "made" 2 billion, that was cut up in all sorts of ways, then they made crappier films that made less money.

They may turn a profit on their Star Wars IP but it's not going to be anytime soon.

What annoyed him was that Star Wars seemed to have taken over these people's lives. He tells a story about how a mother approaches him with her son in tow, proudly announcing that the kid had seen Star Wars a dozen times and asking for an autograph. Guinness told the kid he could have the autograph if he promised to never see Star Wars again.

He was obviously happy with the month, but he was very much an actor with along, storied history behind him. He had dozens of great roles that he was proud of, but no one wanted to talk about his part in The Ladykillers anymore. It was just Star Wars all the time.

295 The U.S. Navy as it was known and respected since its founding was first damaged by Clinton. His expansive closures of bases and scrapping entire fleets while forcing out many of the best and brightest career officers was the beginning of a swift end. I left in '89 and even then, there was ZERO tolerance for gays who wanted to walk tall and proud, meaning coming on to shipmates. We had a black guy on our destroyer who nearly got his ass beat for making unwelcome advances and was swiftly processed out. Today, that same gay guy flirting would be celebrated and anyone complaining would be at captain's mast if not court martialed immediately. Every aspect of civilized society is now upside down. It's your responsibility to politely refuse the advance and not feel the slightest bit awkward showering and sleeping within inches of the guy who likes the look of your ass.

A prequel of sorts I expected to get was a couple of episodes of Breaking Bad in Season 2 or 3, showing how Walter White went from brilliant chemist working at Sandia Lab, to forming a money-making company with a lover and a good friend, to walking away with a chump-change buyout due to losing his lover to his good friend, and ending up as a high school chemistry teacher with lousy medical insurance.

But then I realized such a story makes no sense. Why would brilliant chemist Walter stay at a high school teaching job, and not apply for and get a high-paying job back at Sandia Lab in Albuquerque, or at chemical manufacturing companies in Albuquerque, Houston, or many other locations? 335 quick note - the CA story is much worse. The $100M is to help producers get over the regulation hurdle. The way it works is thus - consulting companies (connected to the regulators) lobby for strict regulations, and then businesses that want to do anything in CA have to hire the companies to help them meet the regulatory requirements.

I have dealt with these scum, and I have known people who in many industries with same story. In my case it was just a small research lab and it was for hazardous material handling. Construction companies complain that they have to pay seismic regulation inspectors to sit in car outside jobsite in order to meet building codes. I imagine for big companies it is even worse.

But the grift here is that the regulations are getting so burdensome that they are taking taxpayer money to give to businesses to give to consultants to meet the regulations that the taxpayers pay for. They are tapping the barrel from both ends.

Bruce Campbell tells a great story about how he as a young actor met Shatner and talked to him. He said he knew that actors like Shat got the same annoying questions from fans every time, so he tried to think of a different one.

He asked Shat how they did that sliding J-Turn in the TJ Hooker intro where he steps out of the car, and Shater was delighted, told him all about how he personally did the stunt and trained for it.

Posted by: Gref at June 16, 2021 02:31 PM (AMIL/)

Might take?

Walter had success early in his life and -- as is the case with many people who achieve early success -- then encountered some adversity and failure -- and didn't handle it well.

He did what most of us do (especially in our relationships and jobs): settle ... and avoid going for another grand accomplishment out of fear of failure.

Going back to teach high school was safe, risk-free, and he could be a successful big fish in a little pond.

446 King George III is a white guy. Other than that, yeah, the entire cast is black and Hispanic.
My personal review is that the first part could have been more interesting. The second part was better.
The show itself has some good things. As noted, Washington is treated very well. The show also - and contra to modern leftist crap - *very* strongly endorses study and hard work. The question is repeatedly asked how some guy who literally started with nothing became one of the most important founding fathers. And the answer is provided - he studied hard, and worked harder. He took the less glamorous jobs because he was the best man for them (Washington's opinion, not his), and that ended up paying off in the future.
It also doesn't gloss over how badly he screwed up by cheating on his wife.
If someone doesn't know who Hamilton is, it's worth seeing. I wouldn't have a problem showing it to a classroom full of kids, though, if I were a school teacher.

447 I've always thought that was a stupid phrase-"Our strength is our diversity" because the only diversity permitted by leftists is of race and gender. You have to be ideologically in step as leftists. Anyway, isn't the military supposed to have the the same goals and objective about the military mission whatever color the military people are?

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at June 16, 2021 02:54 PM (k39e/)

448 > Our strength is in our diversity, and our sailors understand that.

In WWII, the majority of soldiers were white farm boys. A significant plurality were black city kids or black farm boys.

Was that military, which wasn't very diverse, weak?

450 And I like Ace Hardware. Smaller store, easier to get in and out of than the big warehouse behemoths. But the one's around me certainly went hardcore on the muzzled customer requirements.

No one seems to understand how to accentuate their advantages and cater to the noncrazy freedom-loving unwoke. There is money to be made from the whole lot of people like me that are generally tired of shit. Probably a lot of money.

Posted by: banana Dream at June 16, 2021 02:54 PM (/Hhiw)

451 But the grift here is that the regulations are getting so burdensome that they are taking taxpayer money to give to businesses to give to consultants to meet the regulations that the taxpayers pay for.
Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest at June 16, 2021 02:34 PM (nbWWG)

I can attest to this. The county of LA exacts a heavy toll - just try and get a gas line permitted. The rules and regulations (height, length of pipe, step downs, number of valves per linear foot, footings, distance from buildings, etc etc...all design for the applicant to keep multiple county inspectors employed for years just reviewing you application and checking you site, like 1000 times...its a game. Oh, you'll eventually get you permit, but only when another pigeon nearby shows up to take your place when they apply - har har!

452 so bad at business that you need a bailout for selling weed in California of all places???

I would speculate that people used the increased tax revenue from weed sales as a slush fund and got caught short.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor, world's most respected Fantasy Hero writer at June 16, 2021 02:55 PM (KZzsI)

453 So the left is trying to remake the military into willing tool for a junta.

Are there state military that people can join. Does, say, Texas or Florida have its own state military.

I mean this seriously. Who would counsel a patriotic young man to join the US military with what's going on. They will be turned against us.

456 Another problem with a Gaston series... I remember a 'ron making this point about the Solo movie... sorry, my friend; I don't remember exactly who said it...

We know that, in the end, he died as a miserable, embarrassing failure of a human being. How can we be expected to give a shit what he did up to the point where we first saw him now?

MaryJ in Calizuela is just lettuce. Everyone is growing it. You dont make much money on lettuce. Certainly not enough to handle the number of producers that have rushed into the market.

A lot of those legal pot farms are producing a shitload more weed than they can push through the legal dispensaries. Because they're shipping it out of state to non-legal pot areas so that they can make bigger bucks.

When I was living in SoCal, the biggest legal pot farmer in our county went out of business because he was busted with a U-Haul full of weed in Oklahoma. I'm sure that's not a unique situation.

459 Is Jane Austen going to get cancelled too?

Dimwits at Columbia didn't know that her family had ties to the abolitionist movement? We simply cannot take people in their cultural and historical context if they're white and lived in the 1700s and 1800's

I think they should be forced to read "Lived to Tell" about the Black woman who survived the Rwandan genocide.

462 It's funny (but not ha-ha) that Gilday seems so defensive about the racist pretexts of the very book he's promoting (as "recommended reading") as a cure for the hidden racism epidemic.

He is the who broached the subject in the first place! You can't (well, at least not with any sort of intellectual integrity) single out and elevate Kendi as the seer and savior against racism, and then discount the indefensible examples of his blatant, plain-speak racism as "cherry picking."

464 Just how the fuckittyfuck did we get so many metal unstable if not outright insane people in what amounts to dangerous positions of power?

Did Our Betters think this was A-okay behavior or are they just using them as sledgehammers to break the Norms so badly they accept Our Betters Oligarchic Socialist Rule just to make it stop?

Sad.

468 So you're a pothead in a state that just legalized marijuana.
1. Go buy some legal overpriced/overtaxed marijuana.
2. Smoke overpriced/overtaxed marijuana.
3. Keep the container and receipt for the overpriced marijuana which shows that your pot is legal
4. Resume buying from your regular dealer, never buying from the state again.

Posted by: Chuck C at June 16, 2021 01:56 PM (aViol)

I've heard that some pot stores started buying pot from "regular dealers" themselves and pocketed the difference.

Easy.

Liberals decide that race, behavior or whatever trumps skill and talent, so those people get in the system.

The operators in the system direct the jobs to the most useless hacks so they can keep their graft going.

The original operators retire and only the hacks remain and are eligible for positions of power.
