Melbye captures the feel of ships and boats in the evening. The last of the sunset reflecting off the clouds and water, the dropping breeze and smaller waves letting the soft sounds of rigging and wood come through, even at a distance. I've heard it and it's a relaxing moment that calls for a comfortable chair, good beer, and a pipe with mellow tobacco. Yeah, I might be projecting.
I like the way the artist blends the distribution of light from the sky down to the water and how it shows just a bit of detail on the ships and boats. Hugely effective. If I had a den I would hang it there with just the right lamp to illuminate it. Posted by: JTB at June 17, 2021 09:06 AM (7EjX1) 119

The main protagonist Peter Lake came to America with his parents as a baby on an ocean liner of immigrants. Just as their ship gets into sight of the statue of liberty and to ellis island the boat is turned away because the crew found the presence of the plague on board. So there's a riot on the ship and the parents find themselves in the crew's stateroom where they have a little model of the ocean liner under glass. They know they will all die of the plague before they get home. It's a death sentence so they cut open the model, put in a blanket and their baby, and push him towards NYC. Typical MH sweet magical surrealism. I recommend the book. Posted by: banana Dream at June 17, 2021 09:07 AM (+BMD8) 123

Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Someone mentioned Evelyn Nesbit yesterday, so:
Nesbit was born in either 1884 / 5 (records were destroyed and she never remembered), growing up poor and eventually settling in Philadelphia, where, as a sales clerk, a woman artist noticed her and asked her to pose. Soon afterwards, Evelyn was a popular model, making enough money to move to New York and become an in-demand subject for dozens of artists including Charles Dana Gibson, who used Evelyn as one of the models for his iconic "Gibson Girl." https://tinyurl.com/3ryzk57c Tiring of modeling, Evelyn moved to Broadway, joining the chorus of the popular musical Floradora in 1901 and there catching the eye of architect and bon viveur Stanford White. White, who had a "thing" for young girls, became Nesbit's patron, introducing her to the high life, advising her on dress and behavior and, inevitably, taking her virginity after spiking her champagne. White had relationships with many other young chorines, however, and Evelyn soon found herself the obsessive object of millionaire Harry Thaw, who nursed an equally obsessive hatred of White. In 1905, the two married. [Part One] Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at June 17, 2021 09:08 AM (2JVJo) 133

>>Yep. I would not go near one. The fascist left will come for you, until the communist left takes its place. Garland will make sure you never see equal treatment under the law.
"Klan rallies" they will be called. People have been fired for merely attending the 1/6 rally -- not going anywhere near the Capital, just being on the National Mall. Anyone who attends a new Trump rally will be named and shamed, cancelled and ostracized. If you're in a position to weather that, go for it. I suspect - though am entirely open to being wrong - that Trump's new rallies won't be well attended. After all, a Trump rally is fomenting insurrection. The people who go to them will move to the very top of all the lists. The political persecutions will happen.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at June 17, 2021 09:33 AM (Jsjd7) I suspect you may be right, especially with the continued MFM lying about the "insurrection." I don't think the leftists have this well thought out. There's potentially 100 million "domestic terrorists" or "insurrectionists" by their definition. That's a lot of people to either kill or jail. About dang time! Soon after MA passed SSM the Catholic Charities adoption agency shutdown.
