Gun Thread: First Aid Readiness Edition!
So last week we had a bigly excellent comment from our pal and Gun Thread contributor JTB. In fact it was so bigly excellent, I am a little embarrassed I haven't thought to write about it in the last 145 weeks. What is it? What is this bigly excellent comment you ask?
Don't want to get too far off firearms but Mrs. JTB had a question. We are putting together a first aid kit for the car which would include any needs while at the range. We don't hunt anymore. We already have a supply of Israeli bandages, Kelly clamp forceps, and the usual supply of band aids, etc. Can anyone suggest items specific to have at the range? Many moons ago in a previous life I took a multi-day Wilderness First Aid course, which was really very good. The objective of the course was learning how to keep someone alive in the backcountry after an accident when they were two or more days away from definitive medical treatment, by using whatever improvised supplies were available. Since then, I have always kept a first aid kit with at least the basics wherever I go. When traveling, in the car, in my range bag, at the farm - everywhere. Some of the kits are small and contain just a few items to address small cuts and blisters and the like, while others are much more comprehensive. The kit I have at the farm is of the super-jumbo brain surgery trauma bag variety, because the farm's location is an hour from a hospital, and most of the farm equipment I use there is clearly designed to kill me. If anything were to happen while I was there, I am going to have to deal with it myself. You don't have to be in a remote location to make preparedness for medical emergencies a very good idea. So let's think about Mrs. JTB's question. What are the most likely injuries to occur at the range? I suppose gunshots, shrapnel and burns rate fairly high on the list. Whether you are at a public range or at a remote location such as the farm, these are the types of injuries likely to arise around shooting activities. As we saw in the .50 cal accident video a few weeks back, things like guns blowing up and hot metal flying around can do very nasty things. Similarly, a lapse in judgement by someone at a public range can cause a gunshot wound, too. Just go to an indoor range and look at the bullet holes in the walls, ceiling and lane dividers to see what I mean. So I asked our pal and Gun Thread medical correspondent, Cat Ass Trophy, who is an actual Medical Doctor with a stethoscope and everything, for his thoughts on the matter. Specifically if there was a mnemonic used in the ER when dealing with gunshot wounds, and what types of emergency first aid stuff he recommended for dealing with them. CAT tells us:
The mnemonic we used in the military is MARCH, or Massive hemorrhage, Airway, Respirations, Circulation, Hypothermia It would be useful to have a couple of purpose made tourniquets like a CAT. Have at least 2 because a leg arterial bleed will need 2. You have to take these out and practice putting them on a buddy before you need it. I am sure there are some combat medics who made YouTube videos for proper placement and application. Get some gauze with clotting agent to pack in deep wounds. Gauze and pressure dressings to wrap things up and secure splints. Chest seals Good bandage/ trauma shears to cut off clothing/ belts. Simple surgical tools, esp. self locking Kelley clamps. There isn't much the layman can do about the ARC part of MARCH. YouTube a video about head placement and jaw thrust to open an airway, but if the victim has stopped breathing or their heart has stopped as a result of a recreational gunshot wound artificial respirations and chest compressions will be futile. Hypothermia is an under appreciated killer. Even in hot climates hypothermia can set in as a result of shock and disrobement. Hypothermia causes the blood clotting mechanism to malfunction. Mylar sheets and even a couple heat packs can be useful. A few rolls of foam covered aluminum splints would be handy for fractures and sprains. If you really wanted to get into it, find a reputable civilian Tactical Combat Casualty Course. "TC3".So the idea here, I suspect, is to stop the bleeding as quickly as possible and it's nice to have something other than a shop rag covered in Hoppe's 9 to do that. The items recommended aren't overly expensive, will not take up a lot of room, and could help save someone in an emergency. The idea is to act quickly and decisively. Do not overthink things. Stop the bleeding and get the victim to a doctor. Here are links to some of the items mentioned. - CAT Tourniquet - Hemostatic Gauze - Pressure Dressing or Israeli Bandage - Chest Seal - Trauma Shears - Splint - Kelly Clamp Also mentioned are Elastic Bandages, plain sterile gauze and tape. If there is room left in the bag, use your imagination; burn cream, antiseptic wipes and Benadryl are potentially useful items to have in the outdoors. So all that is fine and dandy, but what else should you be prepared to do in an emergency? Time is of the essence, and if available, it's important to assign other people specific tasks while you are tending the victim, such as calling 911 and meeting the responding emergency units as they arrive and escorting them to the accident scene. One thing I was taught to do by the guy who learnt me to shoot was to incorporate a first aid discussion into the morning range safety discussion. This is particularly important when you are with people who are unfamiliar with the location, or where responding medical units may have trouble finding the accident scene. When I am at the farm, I bring out the first aid kit and review the contents with those present before the shooting starts. I suggest in an emergency they dump the whole thing out and get busy. The first thing they find when the bag is opened is a typed sheet with emergency numbers, the location of the nearest hospital, the farm entrance address as well as the latitude and longitude, gate code and instructions to report a training accident involving a firearm has occurred. This last part is important as you do not want the SWAT Team showing up thinking they have an active shooter when in reality your buddy has just shot himself in the foot. Finally, in more remote locations, it may sometimes be a better use of time to transport the victim to medical care. You can call for help en route and let them know you are on the way. This is a decision you will have to make based on the exigent circumstances such as the time or difficulty required for responding emergency personnel to reach the site of the accident. So something to think about. An ounce of prevention is great, but if you or your buddy is on the ground bleeding out, a pound of cure is nice to have, too. Thoughts on anything to add?

What do you think about gun buybacks? Some indicate they would take old guns to a buyback, or they have already. Even if they're non functional, shouldn't a good gunny give a respectful repose to an old workhorse by bashing in the head of a commie first instead of sending it to a furnace?Welp, Weasel is most definitely not a fan of gun buybacks. I get that some people might have a "throw away" gun around to surrender if and when spicy time arrives, and though I cannot really argue with the logic of surrendering a non-functioning weapon if you think it's going to save your ass, the whole notion just seems wrong to me. A lot of great guns are turned into scrap when an old collector passes on to the Great Range in the Sky, and his or her heirs don't know what to do with their firearms. I've heard stories of people attending these things and offering cash for weapons between the parking lot and the collection point, but that may just be internet lore. On the whole, I would rather see the firearms in the hands of people who respect and appreciate them. What do you all think?

On gun buy backs. Seattle held several a few years ago. They paid next to nothing and yes, there were people outside the place offering real cash for some pieces.
After that, the cops discouraged the practice.
Second. That's very comprehensive list for first aid kits and practices. Having had hypothermia and having seen others, and treated them, with it, it is a killer. To my sorrow I know just how much.
The temperature range most likely to induce it is between 45 and 55 degrees. Getting wet, either by being immersed or just sweating too heavily can kick it off. TBC

I got a surgical staple gun kit for my hunting dogs. They sometimes flay their skin open running through barbed wire. However, by the time they slow down enough to come back to me the skin flap is full of grass seeds, etc.
Question for the pros: On a human (or dog) injury that might benefit from stapling in the field, would that be the correct procedure if you could not properly irrigate the wound to remove the foreign matter that might cause infection?
(Could the ER subsequently remove the staples and correctly flush the wound?)

Even the strongest best prepared person can fall prey to hypothermia. Their actions may be bizarre or strange. I for example, get pissed off and belligerent.
My friend who got it, on a very easy hike BTW, near Seattle, got confused and had to be persuaded from going off in the wrong direction. I persuaded her to come with me as carrying her would've been like toting around a very hostile mountain lion.
I lost her to hypothermia a couple of years later.
It's a long and sad story.

Yes, was at the range today. 50 rounds thru the Ruger .45, and 100 thru the H&K 9mm.
I had a gunsmith change the factory rear sight on the Ruger- now it has 3-dot sights and I am chewing the center of the target in fine style.
Then I went to DQ for a $5 vanilla shake. A good day.

I also have a Glock, but not the 21. I have a Glock 36, which has a deservedly evil reputation for FTE issues. I'm not the only one that had these problems with the first round of 36's, but Glock refused to acknowledge there was a problem. Funny thing though, in the next generation the issue disappeared.
The problem, as it turned out, was a barrel with chamber tolerances that were a skosh too tight. I swapped it out with a Wolf barrel and haven't had a problem with it since.

My nephew has the P220 Legion in .45. It is that gun that made my first handgun (hell my first firearm ever) to be a Sig. I opted for the P226 RX1 Legion in 9mm. I LOVE that gun. I especially love the trigger and the G10 grips.

Watching boy scouts do the basic training, my assumption was that "too loose" was far more likely than "too tight".
I know I would have a slight reluctance to cinching it up hard on a person in that much pain.

Oh yeah, they kept the black flies away but not the ticks!!! I found one in my hair when I got back to the hotel that night and the next day when I got home and unloaded everything I found one on the wall where the gear was.Thank goodness these were not bloodsuckers.

By the way, a little lesson about survival, even in an urban environment.
I watch a guy die, choked to death in his own blood, because, for some reason, it took over 30 minutes for paramedics to show up for the guy. The nurse who lived next door, trauma nurse, if memory serves, did all she could, but, it wasn't enough.
I don't know all the ins and outs, but, best guess, broken ribs punctured his lungs and he bled out internally.
I mention it, because, think long and hard about sitting around waiting for the paramedics, especially if there's a possibility you could have the seriously injured person at the hospital in just a few minutes. Yes, there are legal ramifications, but, it's something one needs to be aware of.

On Tuesday Jesse arrives in Laramie and Saturday we set off to north Idaho and Montana for hiking around Lake Pend Oreille, a full moon kayak on Lake Flathead, hiking in Glacier NP, and running a half marathon (me). We're planning to meet up with at least one 'ron along the way for eatin' and maybe shootin', and on the way back we'll stop in Cody to visit the firearms museum at the Buffalo Bill Center--including a private tour (Jesse's birthday present). There is another gun museum in Cody, too: the Dug Up Gun Museum. Look for a report on the museums and any range visits in #twoweeks!

Assuming it isn't a spinal concern, load up and drive like crazy. Call 911 and tell them where you are and where you're headed, and try to have an ambulance meet on the way. Also give description of your car so that LEOs know what's happening, and stay on the phone to keep telling 911 why you aren't pulling over if need be.

Once zeroed, I could hit steel from 150 to 500 yards with ease. Nice, simple AK type sights and a unique gas system which has a nice, mild recoil. Same trigger group as the M1 Garand, which the Czech's stole so why not.
You ain't shot dirty, corrosive ammo until you've shot Czech 7.62 x 45mm. The Love Canal of Combloc ammo.

I got one of the Midway M1 Carbines. IBM with an IBM barrel and Springfield stock. It's in fantastic shape and I couldn't be more thrilled. Tight everything, no rust, and only the stock looks beat up.
I intend to take it to a gunsmith to have it checked out, but, other than checking the headspace, what other safety concerns should I be cautious of prior to shooting?

Believe it or not a tourniquet can be a waste of space and money. Carry a few bungy cords.
Don't forget gloves, scissors, flashlight and a pen (if you do apply a tourniquet the ER needs to know when it was applied this is marked on the person or the tourniquet. Sit down and think of all the stuff that you need (you'll need to winnow it down). Do it ahead of time and have it in a go bag (waterproof) and marked so no frantic search for stuff.
Oh and if you have room carry some water to rinse the wound.

I almost always just use plugs, which work fine for me. The problem with ear muffs when shooting rifles is the cheek weld with the stock can cause the ear muff part to move off the side of your head.

I had my girlfriend fall 20 feet off Mexican Hat Rock and hit her head while rolling once on the ground. Was very hard to watch. Stopped the head bleeding, checked for bone and spine issues, and a concussion.
100 miles from the nearest help. Got there in about an hour. She was fine.

Two reasons:
1) He retired a day short of 10 years as a O-ganger. This left him retiring at 28 years as Enlisted. 2 years later his pension increased to his LCDR rank. He was deep promoted to CDR, but turned it down.
2) By doing so, he evaded the then-current policy of cutting any civil service paycheck by his retired money. That money-sucking provision in the law applied to Officers with 10 years service or more. He did very well in the DOD civil service.

This is a good reminder to go into settings and set up your phone to show emergency contact info like spouse or similar whenever the phone is woken up (not unlocked). If a stranger tries to help and you don't have anything in your wallet, this could help a lot.

I've carried the first aid kit, required by german law for vehicles, since the early 80's. The only thing I've added to it are suture kits, ibuprofen, super glue, a scaple or three, and some good needle nose pliers for fish hooks.

My former RO buddy and childhood friend, who moved away to TX, was a Navy SEAL for decades, one of his specialties was medical. He'd spend a month a year at Bethesda Naval doing trauma and other training.
So obviously having him at the range was gold.
Some of us have been talking to club people about looking into training - and I mean the sort Cat Ass referred to - trauma, not first aid, or even advanced first aid. There are trauma kits at all the ranges.

Great job choosing the videos in the post. Good, basic information, well presented, that gives people a starting point. Certainly more than was available when I started shooting decades ago.
BTW, if a flintlock looses the flint or the frizzen is too worn to spark, it can still be used as a half-assed matchlock. Pretty much fantasy stuff but it could be done. And it does demonstrate the versatility of a flintlock. (As long as you aren't in a hurry to get off that second shot.)

Put in that you are carrying and what ccw you have and route you around places that don't work. Some geofencing around localities that don't match up with their states etc. Does such a thing exist?

Thanks. I'm reluctant to gush about it too much because I don't want to come across as bragging, but I've wanted one of the WWII ones for a couple of decades. I couldn't afford them back when CMP still had them, so I was fairly determined when these came up for sale.
I think I was one of the oddballs that DIDN'T want the bayonet lug simply because - from what I'd read - those were mostly post-war, and I don't think I could've gotten much luckier with the one I got. The only thing that could've made it better would've been a Milton Bradley stock, but I'm completely fine with the Springfield.
I can hardly wait to shoot it.

- betadine or generic equivalent; povidone iodine 10% ... a powerful antiseptic, very necessary on open wounds that are going to be otherwise untreated for hours or days.
- Sudecon wipes, a specific for pepper spray decontamination.
- a CPR shield of some kind; I prefer the MDI microshield, it's what all the fire and emt people seem to use, but anything will probably work in a pinch ... I've carried one for decades and never used it yet ... (no not the same one all that time).
- most of my heavier kits contain a 2 to 8 oz bottle of 95% grain alcohol (Everclear or equivalent), for application both external and internal as required.
probably more, but it's a start anyway ...

When we went to Pennsylvania and up into rural NY a few years ago I remember we went a couple of hours out of our way to pass through the little 2 mile or so gap of Maryland that is over near WV, entirely to minimize the risk of being pulled over and getting to meet local judges and attorneys.

Depends. If the water is clean, I'd go with that cause alcohol will sting and the patient might object. If Alcohol is it sterile? Or Booze. Booze has some contamination thing with rinsing to remember is you might be adding bacteria which can get a head start. Clean Preferably sterile/distilled water would be the best or use some saline solution that is for med use. Gunshot wounds are messy. Cloth, dirt and stuff besides the bullet itself are not sterile and have driven any bacteria into the wound where it'll be hard to get at. So you have to hope it's not something that's resistant. Which is why some of the clear booze might be okay.

About 10 or so years ago in King County (Seattle, but county government instead of City of Seattle council critters) these "wise" people got a hair up their backside and thought a Gun Buyback would help counter crime, so they voted some tax money for said buyback. The local press loudly proclaimed it as a great idea. So it was held on county land and the bounty was $100, up to $300 for some types. Any gun working or not.
WA state is a "shall carry", but open carry only without a CCW permit. The big day arrived, and cars lined up the side street into the lot entrance. Nearly 100 cars showed up.
A few dozen pro-gun folks lined the sidewalks and started very friendly talk with the folks in their cars. They would offer cash for any gun that was of value, and often, a lot more than $300. And IIRC there were some really nice guns, a Win 1894 30-30, a WWII Lugar, a couple of SW 629's, and other good stuff.
It was an amazing scene, with actual bidding wars going on from the gunsters on the sidewalks raising their bids to those in their cars, waiting to get their bounty.

I'm interested in whether or not the Ford Maverick and Hyundai... Something can bring back actual small pickup trucks to market. I know they'll be unibody, but if they can get something going that can tow 5000 lbs for $25K or so, that will be great for the market where it's hard to buy much for under $35.

If your a woman who wants a .45 I would recommend. The grip is smaller than any other mid sized hand gun I own.

No those get trauma bandages and gauze, but there are other injuries like slices and pressure cuts.
Dad fell and hit his head on the wood stove. On the way to the ER I told him he was lucky I hadn't practiced with my new surgical stapler because I figured I should first try it out on someone I didn't like.
By the way, KY jelly is good for getting clotted blood out of hair.

Please, gush away. I was going to ask if anybody got one of the Midway carbines. I waffled back and forth on even trying but I've spent a sh*tload of $$ on the house move the last month or so and it just didn't seem like the responsible adult thing to do. Relatedly, I saw a guy at an antique mall today with a Std Prod M1 carbine for sale. The lack of a price tag on it should have told me all I needed to know but I asked anyway. He wanted $2200. I managed to not say something insulting and walked away.

That last could influence the choice of a knife: carbon steel, not stainless, a flat hard angle on the back of the blade to use a ferro rod.
Fire making when conditions suck is a good skill to have and the materials don't have to take up much space.

You can go watch it, but the short version is that these effete Swiss and Brits have no understanding or appreciation for classic firearms. They whined the whole time about the grips, handling, and of course their standard of comparison was slow-fire at 25 yards, which is exactly what 1900s pocket pistols are *not* designed to do.
Oh, and for the record, the C96 is awesome to shoot one-handed. Also hits like a diesel locomotive, which is why it stayed in production for 41 years.
Basically, I hate the presumption that vintage guns are stupid, designed by idiots and used by fools.

I should add that gun shows remain a great place to find affordable ammo, particularly if you are looking for less common rounds. The shortage has people scrounging around, digging out Grandpa's shoe box etc.
Last two gun shows I attended I found very affordable ammo and it was cash and carry - no shipping.

The county officials were helpless to stop it, as no laws were broken and most local gunners know how to follow all gun laws.
Of course, the gunsters had gotten there earlier, and turned in their old, rusty, non-working guns first, and got paid at least $100 for each piece of useless junk.
Many in cars were at first shy or intimidated with the dozens of gunsters. But the gunsters were smart. Joking, laughing, making friends with the car folks. Any good gun got a bid over $100, often well over $300, so it made no sense to wait in line to get less money.
Someone lost count at the sidewalk purchases, but was well over 50 guns. There were only a few that refused to sell good guns to the sidewalk, 'cuz "principles" or something.
Finally the tax money ran out, the county had a couple of pickups worth of mostly rusty, non-working guns, and the gunsters had dozens of new guns in their safes for a fraction of their real worth. And cash for their crap.
The county council later changed laws to make it tough to repeat the scene again. And no buybacks since in King County.
So good things DO happen in Seattle, too.

In my quest to use up my 700X powder, I've loaded some test loads in 38 special and will do some in 45ACP. I've done a few in both calibers before, but this time will scrub the guns out first (remove all visible lead) and check to see if these loads leave much lead. And did some 700X in 45 Colt, again, give it a second chance (chose HP38 after last comparison).
I used 700X in my 380ACP, works fine. About to load a few hundred of those, starting possibly tonight.
Also loaded some 9mikemike with BE-86 - have part of a small bottle I want to use up. Using FMJ this time (plated, last time).
Then it will be the quest for good uses for the Solo 1000.

Isn't fire coming out of the gap between barrel and cylinder considered a *bad* thing? (Much rather have the second one where the fireball exits the muzzle.) How often does that happen and how does it affect shooting from your coat pocket?
Also, it was interesting to see the pistol appear to rotate in the shooter's hand in the 125x-slower shots. I wonder how much a pistol rotates in the hand before it actually makes the hand move with a good grip in normal shooting?

powder - still pretty much not there, online; some does come into major vendors and sell instantly, from what I read on gun forums
primers - more available now, recognizable brands, commonly used types (small pistol, small rifle), at prices 5 times normal (let's pick February 2020 as "normal"), and up.
Hodgon's website says they sell some powder directly now, but I've never seen any in stock yet on my frequent visits to the site for reloading data.

On Tuesday Jesse arrives in Laramie and Saturday we set off to north Idaho and Montana for hiking around Lake Pend Oreille, a full moon kayak on Lake Flathead, hiking in Glacier NP, and running a half marathon (me). We're planning to meet up with at least one 'ron along the way for eatin' and maybe shootin', and on the way back we'll stop in Cody to visit the firearms museum at the Buffalo Bill Center--including a private tour (Jesse's birthday present). IIRC, there have been a couple of revolver designs where the cylinder shifted forward or something to more-or-less seal the gap but in all "normal" revolvers it happens every time, on every shot. If you have to shoot from your pocket, you're probably going to get singed a little but I assume you've got bigger things to worry about.

Pelican cases make great humidors with Boveda's for humidity control. I also use airtight plastic tubs for bulk storage of my daily smoke bundles. I also have fancier cedar humidors, but capacity is an issue with those. Finally I have a temp and humidity controlled fridge that works well too!

Don't support gun buybacks in any way. Any move you make in their direction is a win for them and a loss for us. At best you are rewarding them with credibility by adding to whatever their "successful" goal is for the buyback.
It's kinda like giving the left some books to burn on their bonfire because "they were just a few I don't really care about"
I would also be curious about what happens to any personal information you give them to get the check for the weapon cut. Would the courts view those lists the same way they regard Gun Registration databases? (I'm ignorant about what privacy rights either one has, or if they are different creatures legally)
Remember, Hitler was able to confiscate firearms by using the registration data recorded by the prior government. And you can sure the GOP will sell out like a Vichy Whore.

I would also be curious about what happens to any personal information you give them to get the check for the weapon cut. Would the courts view those lists the same way they regard Gun Registration databases? (I'm ignorant about what privacy rights either one has, or if they are different creatures legally)

I think you're describing what we always called "June bugs." I just searched for that and it turns out to not be as specific as I thought. There are a bunch of species called that. Anyway, the ones we have here (S. TX) are brown and about 3/4 inch long. I think they are what those fat white grubs with black heads and pinchers mature into.
