Daily Tech News 10 June 2021

Top Story

  • Bitcoin vs. the volcano. (ZDNet)

El Salvador has not only made Bitcoin legal tender, but announced plans to power Bitcoin mining with volcanoes. Well, geothermal power. Which is something they actually have, unlike money.

One of the effects of this is that there's no capital gains tax on Bitcoin in El Salvador. The other effects - well, too early to tell.

I'm pretty negative on blockchains generally, but I'm not a huge fan of the traditional financial system either.

  • Meanwhile, JBS reportedly paid hackers $11 million in Bitcoin to get their cows back. (Blockchain News)

That's how it works, right? I think that's how it works.

Anime of the day is Ichigo Mashimaro from 2005. It's mostly fluff but it's very funny fluff. The story revolves around four young girls - I don't remember exactly how old, but somewhere in the ten-to-twelve range - and the older sister of one of them.

The older sister is the most interesting character because she shows real growth over the course of the series. At the beginning she just wants to drink and smoke and leech money off her younger sibling (in the manga she was sixteen but they wisely increased that to twenty in the anime). Mid-way through she's realised she's stuck with being the baby-sitter for the younger girls, and by the end she actually enjoys watching and sometimes planning their adventures. And even spends her own money on them.

And seeing Miu - the main trouble maker - face-down on the floor after one of the other girls has gotten fed up with her antics and thrown something at her will never stop being funny.

Tech News

  • Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is here. (Tom's Hardware)

Reviewers are unimpressed. It splits the nominal price difference between the regular 3070 and the 3080, but is barely faster than the 3070. If you can get it for recommended retail price it's great value in today's market, but that's rather unlikely.

  • Video card of the day is the GeForce GT 730 from 2014. (Tom's Hardware)

Things are so bad that they've pulled them back off the dusty shelves of Warehouse 13 and are shipping them out to retailers.

They're not great. They're not good, even. But they work.

  • Things are much better if you were holding out for a new CPU. All models of the Ryzen 5000 range are in stock at most retailers and selling at or below recommended retail prices. In Australia the 12 core 5900X is selling for what the 8 core 5800X cost just a month ago.

AMD's Radeon 6700X graphics cards are also readily available. Expensive, yes, but available.

  • Western Digital and Seagate are ramping up production of hard drives - specifically in response to Chia. (Tom's Hardware)

They're not expanding production facilities as yet but will be adding shifts to run existing factories at full capacity. They're fully aware that the Chia bubble could burst at any moment and flood the market with second-hand disk drives.

  • Raptor Lake - Intel's next next generation of desktop CPUs - could have up to 24 cores. (WCCFTech)

Of course, that's 8 good cores and 16 crappy ones, because Intel is absolutely determined to hand the high-end desktop market to AMD on a platter.

  • Patch your Chrome stuff. (Bleeping Computer)

Google has fixed an actively exploited bug, so if you're still on 91.0.4472.77 you should update to 91.0.4472.101 right away.

  • Asked how many customers had had video data from their Ring video doorbells handed over to police without a warrant or even notification, the company, now owned by Amazon, said. (Tech Crunch)

That's an unedited quote, by the way.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation was more forthcoming:
Ring is ostensibly a security camera company that makes devices you can put on your own homes, but it is increasingly also a tool of the state to conduct criminal investigations and surveillance.
    They also catch fire.

  • Everything new is old again: The Vivaldi browser now has built-in email, calendar, and RSS feed support. (The Verge)

What about news, though? No love for NNTP?

Episode Zero Video of the Day

The preview episode for Ichigo Mashimaro. No, it's not all like this. Sometimes it gets a bit weird.

Teenagers Anime Music Video of the Day

The song fits the show perfectly because it doesn't fit at all.

As I posted last thread, JBS paid the ransom even after they had supposedly fully restored the system from backups. They were afraid they'd make the hackers mad, so paid the ransom anyway.

7 I have been trying to research gaming monitors off and on, found a few things:

-most of those that are recommended do not appear to be physically stocked in a local store. Best Buy is crap, but it is one of my few local options.

-had some very bad luck with amazon on anything with a screen. I ordered a monitor and got a defective screen. This after getting two TVs last year that had shattered screens (which was only fixed after amazon upgraded the tv size and triggered installation service rather than have me cancel and get a full refund.)

-I checked out Puget to see what they were recommending for screens (they had recommended BenQ when I had this system built, but I had held off.) Sadly, they seem to have gone away from doing gaming systems. That makes me sad, as I had developed a lot of brand loyalty to them after the last two systems have just been great.

My fav was the electric company that wouldn't let me pay my bill without my wife's personal info and password* out of "security concerns" and then 3 months later I get a "we were hacked! Your personal information may have been stolen!" letter from them.

Meh.

They're certainly unethical enough to do that, but you have to understand that this shit happens constantly. Bring a new server online and it's getting scanned for vulnerabilities within a couple of minutes. People run honeypot servers to keep an eye on what the hackers are up to, and the answer is that everything is under attack all the time.

27 If our intelligence services weren't so preoccupied with monitoring and destroying us, maybe they'd be able to do something about all these hackers. Killing some of these SOBs in a public, bloody way might make a difference. But even if it wouldn't, they've got it coming.

29 "Best Buy is crap, but it is one of my few local options."

Don't use Best Buy, they are corrupt. We bought a $200 flatscreen TV from them that didn't work when we got it home. But we made the mistake of waiting more than 30 days (life got Real) before returning it.

They wanted to make us go back and forth with the manufacturer (cutting them out to the loop) on a broken product they sold to us.

Wife asked to handle it because she thought "Not Going Fen" on them would help get a replacement. I got a good laugh as the Best Buy Manager played the same BS they played on me. After 4 hours of arguing, we finally got it replaced for free, but only because I was walking around to every display station and yanking the monitors back and forth on their bolted stand to see how much forced I needed to pull them out and down to the ground.

Oh best part - Bust Buy has a 60 day return policy for "valued customers" that pay for some VIP card, which we had not. So that 4 hours was nothing about the 30 days, they were just trying to f us.

Just opening Chrome didn't start the update for me. So here's what I did:

Under the Chrome menu, I opened About Chrome; that told me I was running Version 91.0.4472.77 (Official Build) (x86_64); Chrome then started "Checking for updates". After about 2 minutes, I got the message "Relaunch Google Chrome to finish updating. 100 Army battalion commander says "if you're a white male you're part of the problem"

According to the Book of the Face, the US Army's 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment (3BCT, 4ID) got a new commander last week. They posted goodbye messages to their former commander on the 4th of June. Now, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew "Dru" Rhodes has been outed on social media as the new CO and not for good reasons. Apparently, if the reports are true, he's a huge racist who immediately believes any accusations levied against one of his soldiers.

Yesterday, I got a "survey" in the mail from Tim Scott. Begging for money, of course, but what I found particularly galling was that at the top of the begging letter, there was a picture of Scott sitting with Donald Trump. How dare you attach yourself to this man. You know, the one you didn't lift a finger to help. The one you stayed stone silent on when the election was ripped and stolen from the American voters. It has a postage-paid envelope with it. Oh yes, I will send it back and politely remind him of a lot of things...

112 Google Chrome updating:

In case this helps anybody:

Just opening Chrome didn't start the update for me. So here's what I did:

Under the Chrome menu, I opened About Chrome; that told me I was running Version 91.0.4472.77 (Official Build) (x86_64); Chrome then started "Checking for updates". After about 2 minutes, I got the message "Relaunch Google Chrome to finish updating. Incognito windows won't reopen"; I clicked Relaunch; a minute later, I got the message "Google Chrome is up to date" running Version 91.0.4472.101 (Official Build) (x86_64).

115 Bitcoin's price slipped again Tuesday. The reason for the move was unclear, however it may be related to concerns over security of the cryptocurrency after U.S. officials managed to recover most of the ransom paid to hackers that targeted Colonial Pipeline"

What if the "hackers" and the "U.S. officials" play on the same team? It was always about attacking the things Leftists hate, and then plundering those entities.

I'll believe it isn't a Deep State op when they take Planned Parenthood off-line.

125 I am confused by the Bitcoin and crypto craze. Something is deemed to have a value because it might have a greater value at some point in the future. Isn't that a key feature of any bubble?

If Bitcoin valuation is driven by demand, it may also drop in value, and we see huge fluctuations in Bitcoin though there has been a trend upwards thus far. The real surge in value has been over the last 6 or 8 months. And there has been a 50% drop recently between March and May.

I'm not a currency speculator and would never buy an asset like this at or near the highest valuation in history. If I were mining and had a huge rig it might be worth the trouble but I don't and I'm not planning to start any time soon.
