A friend is a former Marine who got hired as a lab tech despite no scientific background (he was a welder with an associates degree) and what was funny is that he was better than the college grads with degrees in chemistry. It was probably at least in part because he understood that there were lots of things he didn't know, so I didn't look down his nose at others or feel like he was too smart to ask a stupid question.

It is better to sort out these questions now, before they become an increasing source of potential oppression as we continue to evolve sexual practices and mores.

the only time i hated the marine on board was when they'd line up for chow at 1000 and i had to try and eat before watch...

there are tests online, but they really vary in quality.
One problem is that its difficult to write a test to test someone Smarter than you are.
And a lot of folks writing the tests are not too swuft.

As some of you know, I recently moved. I had been in my previous place - a two-bedroom apartment - for a decade. The amount of shit I got rid of was absolutely staggering. I called a junk hauling outfit to take it away after I staged it all.
After I staged it into a an area measuring 5' x 7' x 6' That means I got rid of about 210 cubic feet of shit.
From my 840 square foot apartment. I still can't believe it.

They also discovered that below a certain point, it simply was impossible to make a good soldier. I admit my advice to local parents (who have asked me) is "they can be who they want" but there's nothing "permanent" done til 18 and they are adults deciding for themselves (so they can have other names - and they all have - and wear the other clothes and do the hair and the makeup, but no meds or surgeries)...the 2 girls' moms thanked me for that one, since their girls are girls again...

If you query people who work in a sector or function and ask them about their confidence in their opinions given on the job, confidence goes up with experience to a point, levels off, then at a certain amount of experience it starts to decline. Not all the way as low as the newbies, but definitely lower than the moderately experienced. After you've done something for a few years, you think you know everything. After you've done something for a couple of decades, you know you don't know everything.

The base line assumption is an 8th grade education in math, reading and writing comprehension when you walk into the ASVAB. The NFQT is a Navy Nuke math heavy test and is somewhat of an outlier because it tests your basic and advanced learning math abilities. The DLAB is a language test that consists of a made up language to test your ability to learn a foreign language. Every test the military uses has been time tested over decades to determine a recruits ability to learn. They are not testing what you have learned like a standard IQ test and they can't really be compared to standard IQ tests.

Because the pointless lockdowns and school closures damaged so many children's educations (apparently only 25% of students remained at grade level), the "gifted" classes that were for the unusually bright students to be removed and challenged have now been populated by all the students that are doing completely normal grade level work, and the regular classroom time when those students leave the room are now for remedial instruction to the students that are no longer at grade level.

But otherwise, I wouldn't have ranked anyone else. It's obviously a psych experiment intended to learn about or even humiliate the test subject.

But the main point isn't so much that the experiment is designed to humiliate, it's that people should have the humility to know that you don't know other people's IQs. The "expert class" thinks it is entitled to manage everything and to decide how smart everyone is.

When I went in for my ASVAB I was done so quickly that I had to wait around for an hour for the other folks to finish. Afterwards we called his recruiter to come pick us up, and he had us read off our scores to him. Mine was 97, his was 22. That was a long car ride back to the station.

I've done some quick and dirty internet research on IQ. Average IQ for people who earn doctorates is about 120-125. According to Vox Day a National Merit Scholarship *used* to mean an IQ of about 140 which is pretty dang high. I attended an Ivy League university for undergraduate and graduate school and was surprised how many classmates had one.
I was given an IQ test after a traumatic brain injury in 2015. I didn't ask for that - it was part of a neuropsychological assessment of cognitive function - and frankly I didn't want to know but the doctor told me my number. Let's just say it was higher than 112.
112 is good. According to an IQ level/percentile calculator that's higher than about 78% of the population. In a room with 5 strangers there's about a 50/50 chance she's the smartest person present.

"Born this way" was an argument stopper that arose as a way to combat the Christian ethos in America that said, "I believe that you are engaging in a sin, but I love you anyway. I will help you in whatever way I can to stop living this sinful life."
It goes to the heart of the issue. Is homosexuality immutable or not? If it's intrinsic, then telling people they are sinful by being what they are is at least wrong-headed.
However, if you're a traditional Christian, you believe that the person's soul is in danger and they are harming their relationship to God.
"Born this way" was designed to shut down that conversation and to guilt Christians into not following their beliefs. It's been remarkably effective. Only hardline Christians even try to have this conversation anymore.

Standard IQ tests do not test what you've learned, and are typically given to kids aged ~12. They're basically exercises in pattern recognition ("complete the series ... showing a triangle, a rectangle, a pentagon, ..."). Raven's Matrices, for example, is a non-verbal IQ test that can be given to the illiterate.

If anyone has someone they know considering the military, and they are still in high school, have them take the ASVAB in high school. Most schools offer it. It is an easier test. The scores will be several points higher and it may offer up more career opportunities.

A high IQ confers some advantages. It also flatters the deadly practice of "being too clever by half."
IQ is a shibboleth on the Left because many, many Progressive arguments are based on worth correlating with IQ. (I mean, what are they going to say, "All God's children have inherent worth"?) So you get eugenics. So you get people deeply offended by a lower IQ score than they think they should have.

I have no idea what my IQ was when I was a kid. All I know is that when ever I did take a IQ type test I'd get frustrated and upset because there was that ONE question that I couldn't get and I wanted someone to tell me what the answer was.
Also had the reputation for being the absolute air head ditz blonde who never was quite all there.
I don't know how I'd score now, either, because I'm more "here" but I can FEEL that my brain is slow. I can feel it.

That certainly plays a large role in general (although I always think of the law school student with the photographic memory in Paper Chase who could not apply the knowledge).
It's pretty arrogant to think that something is complex as intelligence, which has many facets, can be measured or somehow normalized onto any single scale.

Nah, coming out of Boot Camp and then Marine Combat Training? A year in Comms School is a vacation. Although I guess it would get stale once you caught your breath.
I liked 29 Palms. I was lead for a section of LAV-25s. Back then I could just call up Range Control and tell them we were going out into the desert to do Sagger drills.
Lejeune in NC is what sucked. Barracks mentality with a whole bunch of political drama (because we didn't get out in the field enough because of some endangered woodpecker)

I had a friend going through psych school and he was specializing in testing so he gave me a thorough multi-whatever test and apparently I was the "smartest" person he ever tested.
I went through most of it frustrated that I wasn't scoring perfectly.
But I've learned the trick since then: Don't use your brain. It IS way too slow. ;-)

Oddly enough, I scored higher on IQ because of my artistic ability. I dont know if they still do this but the kids test used to have you draw a picture of a person and they judged based on what you put into it (not talent but details and observation). I have almost no memory of the test, but apparently I drew an amazingly detailed figure, down to buttons and shoelaces etc which amazed the tester.
That makes me suspect I'm not nearly as smart as they say, just observant and keen in memory for certain kinds of details.

As soon as I figured out that it didn't affect my grades, I just did random patterns in the little circles for the scan tron. Lines weaving back and forth, all B's etc. It didn't matter, I didn't care and wanted to get it over with.

I commanded an army recruiting company. Any candidate scoring over 115 on the ASVAB got my personal attention. I was a Intel guy so was always looking to fill Intel slots. We got extra credit for those jobs.

My son was all over the map on their stupid EQ testing. He's a good egg who is always willing to help. Life Scout now working on his Eagle. Always willing to pitch in.
First year he was top-marks on the empathy assessment. The next year he dropped to middlin'. The wife was curious so she asked to see both the results and the test itself. He got wrong some BS question that was worded like "I can understand how difficult it is to be homeless. Y/N." He said no - because he knows homeless is such a big deal, he can't even imagine how trying that has to be on somebody, and won't pretend to even imagine just how hard that is.
Overly-understanding, I guess. And they counted this wrong. Bullshit.

2. If it's lower than you thought, then the test is obviously flawed.

The good artists I've known have all been smart. Being able to produce good art means being able to recognize patterns, symbolism, to break apart a scene into it's components such as lines, shapes, hues, values, positive and negative space, etc., and to reproduce those things in a consistent way.

Some people are born with just absurd natural gifts. Some aren't. Of the ones who aren't, some might be incredibly hard workers. Some of the gifted might be beyond lazy. A recruiter will almost always take the talented one because you can't drill raw talent into somebody. But every sport has underdogs that did better than the high-born because of their work ethic.

Its a certain kind of intelligence. Great artists (not me) can figure out why something looks that way, or why it works, and apply that to their work. And they learn very very fast techniques, tricks, and sleights of work. Like how a photographer can see the same thing you see, but pick the one portion of it that looks amazing on its own.

Actually, the two test I did were 20 years apart and I scored the same. These tests aren't something you can study for. They use patterns and logic to give the person the means to solve a problem. If you guess and get it wrong, it detracts from the score.

All the rest were clustered pretty closely in the high-120 to mid-130 range. She was ALL THEY WAY DOWN at 112.
I called it at the start when she started talking about what her COMPANY did - and never told them what her ACTUAL JOB was. Classic sign of somebody who knows goddamn well their job is crap, and they try to leech off their company's prestige.
The real slammer was when she literally said that she didn't think an IQ test would be part of it, "I thought we would be looking at social media". Like what the actual FUCK? How in the name of fucking God would they use SOCIAL MEDIA to test intelligence.
