Well, here’s one way to get out of work: production on NBC’s upcoming game show, Ultimate Slip ‘N Slide, has been put on pause indefinitely after an outbreak of “explosive diarrhea” occurred on set earlier this month. Now, that’s what we call a shitshow. Filming officially shut down on June 2nd, when producers were first made aware that a crew member had tested positive for giardia, a tiny parasite that causes a diarrheal disease called giardiasis. While test samples of a well, pond, slide pool, water truck, and restroom sinks all came back negative for giardia, additional results found on June 10th that giardia had been in the set’s surrounding area.

Until now it was easier to get your hands on a crossbow than an air rifle.
On Tuesday, Japan’s House of Representatives held a plenary session, and the days discussions of matters of national legislative importance eventually turned to crossbows. Surprisingly, despite spelling out rules and regulations regarding all sorts of weaponry, Japan’s Firearm and Sword Control Law apparently had no preexisting rules, specifically no specific ordinances, relating to crossbows, of either the two-handed or single-handed pistol crossbow/bowgun variety, perhaps because crossbows are technically neither firearms or swords. As a result, up to now there’s been no specific licensing required for their possession or use. Much like in a fantasy role-playing video game, if you had enough money to pay for a crossbow, you could buy one and use it as you personally saw fit. That’ll be changing soon, though, as the House of Representatives passed a motion to amend the Firearm and Sword Control Law, and once it goes into effect Japanese residents will need a permit from their Prefectural Public Safety Commission in order to possess a crossbow. The requirement is modeled after one already in place for air rifle ownership, which requires the completion of safety classes and for the owner to be at least 18 years of age.

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper re-asserted his position on Tuesday that he would not build the team a new stadium without government assistance. It’s the latest example of a multi-billion dollar NFL owner expecting local citizens to foot the bill of pet projects under the guise of fandom. Tepper’s proposition isn’t unique. Rather, it’s become part of the fabric of the NFL’s new-normal which treats its cities as expendable — unless they’re willing to pay. The ever-present subtext in these discussions is that if local government won’t foot the bill, a team will find a city that will, even if nobody is saying it. “I’m not building a stadium alone,” Tepper told reporters on Tuesday. “The community is going to have to want it.” The Panthers owner added that he wasn’t going to force a new stadium on anyone, but once again, the devil is in the details. It’s bizarre of Tepper to say he won’t “force” a stadium on the people after years of publicly stating he wants a new stadium with a retractable roof to house the Panthers, his recently-purchased MLS team, and host larger events, potentially even a Super Bowl.

A 21-year-old Florida Woman who was naked from the waist down inside a Circle K told a cop that “another deputy told her it was fine to do that,” according to an arrest report. Responding to a 1:30 AM “naked woman in public" call last Thursday, police found Kendall Mabry sans pants or underwear inside the convenience store in Umatilla, a city about 45 miles from Orlando. A Circle K clerk and a sheriff’s deputy both reported seeing Mabry emerge from the store’s bathroom “with no pants or underwear on.” When asked about her state of undress, Mabry reportedly “stated that another deputy told her it was fine to do that.” Mabry, police reported, smelled of alcohol and her speech was slurred. Additionally, “the smell of marijuana was coming out of her vehicle.” Mabry’s pants were found inside her car, according to the arrest report.

I had a recent thing with avocados. There is a state between turning brown and being ripe that avocados get into. It is hard to describe, but it sucks big time. The thing gets more dense, still green mostly, but something is off. You can still use them, but they are well passed their prime. It is like porno, you know it when you see it.

Also, there was a mention of how good Minolta lenses were. I never had a Minolta 35mm but do have a Minolta Autocord TLR. Haven't used it in a while but recall the lenses were superb. Excellent clarity and detail wide open even for medium format. I didn't feel camera envy compared to the Rollei users.
Hmmm. Now I want to go through my old film cameras, see what's there and if they still operate. I know I have some 35mm film in the freezer. Wonder if there is still some 120 film with it.

So I was watching an video of Toy Galaxy where he was doing flea market finds. Apparently one of the parts in an old camera was the base for Luke Skywalker's lightsaber. And if you happen to have that you could probably sell it for some cash to people that want to make a "real" lightsaber.

Thanks for the Weincell tip! I will check with one of the big camera retailers here in Alberta if they carry them. Mercury batteries were never very cheap, either. The actual power consumed by the match-needle metering system is trivial; the battery essentially lasts for its entire shelf life.

Inflation nation: John Williams at Shadowstats has update his numbers with the latest CPI. As I've mentioned here before, this guy takes the raw data and calculates inflation as the govt used to, pre-1980 and pre-90 (or so).
By the pre-90 method, headline inflation would be 8% and by the pre-80 method, it would be 13%.
So, folks, since that's the method they used in the '70s era, you can pretty say we're in 70s levels of inflation.

Enbrel is a very expensive drug. A very complex and expensive molecule. I know about these things cause I've got RA. They are in a class known as TNF blockers.
I'm taking one now, dubbed "Simponi Aria". The list price of this shit is about $9K per infusion. Insurance knocks it down to between $5 - 6K, and a program the doc got me on knocks it down to about nothing.

Lots of potential side effects related to immune suppression. Me, I've had singles outbreaks probably close to ten times. Had a little pop out last week. My doc keeps me stocked up on acylcovir. That knocked it out in several days. This is not normal shingles by the way. It generally occurs at the peak of immune suppression.
It's a hard benefit to risk calculation. These drug ads tout the former. Don't tell you too much about the latter. Gloss it over.

Heart were very influenced by LZ. They kind of did the sometimes folk\sometimes rock thing that LZ would do. I am just intrigued by the idea of Ann's spectacular voice and Page\Jones production, music and writing. And personally, Plant is the weakest link of LZ to me..I can't see where Anne couldn't do anything he could do and more, at least in the 73-79 era I envision it happening in.

Dad brought back some souvenirs from Guam, like money and trinkets, but he had no interest in Japanese souvenirs, if you catch my drift. His main contact with the Japanese was POWs.

personally I think that Joel Mokyr has messed up his philosophy of types of knowledge by inventing fairly opaque jargon to describe it, AND he likes saying Schumpteter far too much.
Also he should read Jean Piaget on development.
I once wrote a girlfriend's chapter report in her econ 101 class where the textbook was written in part by Paul Krugman (that man pisses me off) by using Austrian definitions and conclusions. She got a B and was told she clearly was interested in the history of economics.

hell, i'm hungry now, just thinking about it. i had a back pack stove from REI, took a wire brush on a drill to the mess pan and canteen cup, then painted the outside with high temp flat black spray paint, for heat absorption, and was styling. the stove fuel cans lived in a 30 cal ammo can.

Spot of hope for MN. My estranged brother just copped to a felony plea of 40 months, less time served for a failed home invasion he tried to pull off, there.
The pity is though, he should've got about fifteen years. Bonus: he plead out to a misdemeanor Electronic Harassment charge I had filed against him. Texting threats from jail from a jail's own lawyer comm text system, is self incrimination of the first order. He turned 65 in jail, last September. And he just never learns. Many state and federal terms, him.
Next time I see him will likely be when I scatter his ashes across an MN potter's field.

During prep for the dream Team Olympics, the team was in Monte Carlo practicing before going to Barcelona. Tim Daly had set up East vs West scrimmages. It was pretty even until the last day, when Magic Johnson's West team jumped out to a ten point lead. Johnson told MJ, "You better turn into Air Jordan or you're going to get blown out."
Things started getting chippy with more trash talk and multiple Jordan 3 pointers and a 360 dunk over/around David Robinson. Jordan's team stormed back and won the game.
After the game, there was a lot of tension in the air and both teams were quiet on the bus trip back to the hotel until Magic said loud enough for everyone to hear, "Well, I guess we shouldn't have pissed the man off." At which point the whole bus burst out in laughter.

These guys were part of the 15th MEU, they are expected to be T1 rating (highest) for SORTs (Status of Readiness and Training) which means their BN S-3 and CO declared them at T1. Which means their careers are over too.
I was a gunner with 3D LAR, LAV-25s at 29 Palms, AAVs were kind of our rival sister tribe. One year a Section Lead (CPL or SGT) thought it would be a good idea to give our scouts some cross-training in driving the LAV-25 in case we lost our driver in combat. I would have agreed at the time.
But a sand berm collapsed under the vehicle's left side, causing it to roll. The gunner was pop up in the turret and it crushed him in half, killing him.
Everyone in the chained of command was fired - Platoon Sgt, Platoon Commander, Company Commander. And none were even aware of what their Section Lead was doing. Didn't matter, it happened on their watch.

Don't tell anyone, but I almost took my eye out with my bayonet. We were cleaning weaps after an op and I left my bayonet attached to the M16A2 (like a dumbass). Release collar for the barrel shrouds wouldn't release, so I put both hands on it and leaned in hard. ...derp... my hands were sweaty so my grip slipped down the rifle, and my upper torso and head followed downward towards the bayonet, which skimmed just an inch outside my left eye. Almost got my ear too.
Startled, I looked up just in time to see my Platoon Sgt facepalming (poor guy). That earned my one of those "pushups until I get tired of watching you" punishments. Which was well earned SMH

Wearing body armor pretty much 24/7, not to mention humping gear, even in armored vehicles, does a number on the body, not to mention off-the-charts hyper-vigilance.
In your 20s and 30s, the human body is usually at its peak, but with enough wear and tear, by your 50s, you're looking at back issues, bigly, especially for women.

Apparently, Armour stopped making the hog brains because of a problem in the processing plants. A process using compressed air to process the brains cause pig brain aerosols to get in the air and be breathed in by some workers. It caused an immune reaction.
That plant just stopped making them -- it wasn't economical enough to try to fix the process.

I've had two major surgeries in the St Louis AO VA.
First, they had to outsource to Barnes Jewish Hospital, due to the VA not having a gynecological surgery in St Louis.
Second, diskectomy/laminectomy in my lower back a few months ago at the St. Louis VA, after years of increasing degenertion of my lower back.
No complaints thus far.

Searching on hog brains and why Armour quit selling them.
The problem happened in 2008 at a plant in Austin, Minn. It caused quite a stir with fears that maybe eating hog brains could be a problem as well. The conclusion was no problem eating them, just don't breathe hog brain material. Papers on this made the big medical journals.

You eat a lot of stuff that would be very bad and trigger all sorts of allergic and immune reactions if it got directly into your bloodstream.
The papers on this subject I saw were behind a paywall so I couldn't read exactly, but apparently, in some people, breathing in the fine pig brain material caused an autoimmune reaction which caused some serious problems in some of these workers at the brain station.

If you can manage it, you can read the whole story. It was big mystery, with them fearing it was some new disease, maybe something in pork. But it became clear it wasn't infectious, and was associated only with the "brain blowing" operation. The plant just shut it down before the cause was completely determined.

It turned out it was an autoimmune reaction. That is, the hog brain material being breathed in trigger a response from the immune system. But this agent was so close to the body's own tissue, that the antibodies and all that started attacking the body's own tissue.
In this case it was causing spinal inflammation and neve damage.
At the time of writing, it wasn't clear why it just suddenly popped up. Did procedures change, or what. These questions were unanswered as of the above article writing.

I'm getting to tired and lazy to look into this any more tonight, but it's got my curiosity up and I'm gonna see if I can find any papers on this brain blowing disease. It's been over 10 years, and I'm sure they've got it figured out by now.
But Rose Brains, the sole canned brains product left on the market, does not use compressed air anymore to extract the brains.
People have been eating hog brains for a long time with no problems, so there has been really no reason for concern.

Re God laughing. That reminds me. With Art Bell and others over the years, I've heard many near death experience stories. Some of them quite moving.
Some claim they were in the presence of Jesus but only have vague memories. They say they remember "knowing so much, understanding it all, but can't remember". And they describe being in a state of such joy and happiness, with a feeling of Love that can't be experienced in our earthy state.
They didn't want to leave, but got, "No my child, it's not time for you to come home, you must go back".
And the funniest thing is they describe Jesus Christ as having one heck of a sense of humor. He's a very funny Man. He makes you laugh. With a joy you've never experienced.

I think this is all a big learning experience for us, this life on Earth thing. Recalling some more of these near death experience tales, there is a big "Life Review" that will occur.
Something like Jesus going over your life with you, and want you did good and what you did wrong. You will see the full effects of your actions, big and small. That little nasty comment you made, how it affected those around you. Stuff like that.
