Ace of Spades Pet Thread

***

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. C'mon in and relax and enjoy the world of critters.

***

A Little of This. A Little of That.

One of the neat things about being a Cob here at the AoSHQ is the correspondence I receive when it comes to the Pet Thread. You never know what you'll get. And the following story is one of those unusual stories.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — After five years of sniffing out land mines and unexploded ordnance in Cambodia, Magawa is retiring.

The African giant pouched rat has been the most successful rodent trained and overseen by a Belgian nonprofit, APOPO, to find land mines and alert his human handlers so the explosives can be safely removed. Last year, Magawa won a British charity’s top civilian award for animal bravery — an honor so far exclusively reserved for dogs.

“Although still in good health, he has reached a retirement age and is clearly starting to slow down,” APOPO said. “It is time.”

Magawa has cleared more than 141,000 square meters (1.5 million square feet) of land, the equivalent of some 20 soccer fields, sniffing out 71 land mines and 38 items of unexploded ordnance, according to APOPO.

Meet The PetMorons

This is Wrigley, named after some field or something. I love that the collar is designed to look like the stitches on a baseball. - Sobek Pundit

Thanks to our wonderful artist and regular contributor.

Something a little different to add to the pile.

Engineering Instructor, decided one day I wanted to design a project around ducks....because why not? Got 90pc done and then admin shut me down.

I wanted my ducks. So now I have 14 Swedish Blues that I'm hosting to prove out the automation project. I've named my brace of ducks the "Swedish Shite Machines". Little metal...but it works.

Every evening we sit out on the porch and I let them play in the kiddie pool. Most calming thing ever. I could watch this on loop and skip the anxiety meds!

As always. Love the pet thread.

Robinton

Well, this is a submission we don't see often, a video with ducks. You'll need a bigger pool in the near future. Cool group thanks for your contribution today!

Pets/Animals
Mis Hum,

Don't rightly know if this should be here or in the gardening thread.

This Raccoon was one of the little scamps that have been digging holes in my garden this year. So far, I've caught three of them and one Possum in my live trap.

I relocate them to USFS land about 18 miles from my house. It's better than the .22 caliber pest control option because I don't have to dig holes in the woods back of the house to bury them and also I have neighbors closer than 300 feet on either side of my land. Plus I think they're out of season. - That Guy What Always Says Yeah Buddy.

Well when it comes to guns. Its better to be safe than sorry with neighbors. If you are around today please tell us how the raccoons handle the travel. Thanks for sharing.

Hank the Tank-We rescued him because we were looking for a cat who would patrol outside and keep the critters out of the lawn. Hank had other plans. He spent the first 2 days wedged into the dropped ceiling in the basement and then a few months retreating to my closet if someone new visited the house. Now he’s a demanding lap cat with a noisy purr who wants to know if you are going to finish the milk from your cereal. He ignores one of our girls and allows the other to bathe his glorious 13 pounds. He has no interest in going outside. -Leonard

A handsome lad who apparently had other ideas about his station in life. Why be a guard kitteh when you can be a lap kitteh! Thank you for sharing today.

Tobie (1).jpg

Hi, Ms. Hum,

I'd like to introduce my new sidekick Tobie. He's a shelter dog, apparently equal parts Shepherd and Golden but I wasn't there so it's just a guess. Also guessing at his age, which I estimate no more than 9 months given his proportions, habits and need to chew. His adult teeth are still coming in so he may have a bit of growing to do yet.

Tobie came home with me only two weeks ago, and no other dog or pup ever settled in so quickly. I predict he's going to be the smartest dog I ever took care of, and I'm really looking forward to being right. We're going to have a hell of a lot of fun together, if he just doesn't get sick and die on me like his predecessor. - Joel

Congratulations on your new side kick. Tobie appears to be a happy and healthy puppeh. Here's hoping you two have many happy years and memories together.

Love your Saturday pet pics and stories.

Here’s my handful of trouble, a Scarlet macaw, Kula-I’ve had her since she was a little birdie, 16 years young. Her favorites are pistachios, green olives & blue berries. She loves hanging upside down and laying on her back on my chest so I can play with her grabby feet. - Michael

Oh my what a gorgeous bird. She sounds like quite the companion. Quite the varied diet she has. Thanks so much for your kind words and sharing with us today.

Here is a picture of our Shih-Pom Edison, who has been in your thread before. In this picture he is appearing on the back of my recliner at my shoulder which is his usual spot. Now that he is getting on in years and has arthritis in both his back legs, it is miraculous how he still manages to jump up on the back of the couch or the recliner so he can survey the house and back garden more easily. I've had cats who act like dogs, but Edison is the first dog we've had who is as nimble as a cat. - Debra T.

Edison has that look like he's the boss! Most pooches enjoy the comfy portions of the furniture. Good to see him again. Thanks for sharing.

aviteefandbeans (1).jpg

Hi, this is Avi.
He likes to cuddle humans and bite the faces and ears of his four-legged siblings. He sings spicy ballads through the windows at our friendly, well-fed feral kitties. He jumps from headboards and cat trees onto tender, prone mammal parts lying underneath them. He will chase and kill anything that moves. Whether is it the great red dot or a trespassing lizard. He gives wonderful scratchy kisses that can turn into terrible chin bites. At 4 years old, he is a lively, healthy and loved boy. - Jillybeans68

Yikes, those teeth look like they could leave a mark or five. He certainly sounds like an interesting and loved kitteh from your email. Thanks for contributing today.

Monty and Villan 05-13-2021.jpg

What happens when one set of grand pups finds out the other set became world famous. See bellow.
The pup on the left is Monty a very loving and sweet pup. Only wants a scratch behind the ears or a nice back scratch.
Finally found his forever home.
On the right is Villan a couple of genes short of a full beagle. Funny pup and loves to play hide and seek. Tell him to go hide, he will.
Call his name and he will howl till you find him. He also survived a rattle snake bite. No word on the snakes health.
He will also sit on the back of a couch and put his head on yours.
From a puppy mill.
So grandpa learned his lessen, pay attention to all grand-pups.

notasmartdog

Well the Pet Thread is happy to make Monty and Villan world famous! They look like wonderful companions. I've never heard of "Hide and Seek" with a dog without the dog running away. Thank you for sharing today.

Hello, Mis Hum.

A while back I sent a pic of my backyard foundling, Dexter. Well, he has a sister now (brought to us by way of my husband’s sister who fosters kitties). We named her Dali due to her fabulous stache, but she’s a very vocal little girl and we started calling her “Bird”. She’s a dwarf and won’t be getting any bigger. Weighing in at around 7.5 lbs, this little precious has stolen our hearts! Included is a pic of the two cats together for perspective. -Sincerely, SnowChick

Quite the 'stache' on that kitteh. Delightful markings! She certainly seems to have landed on her paws quite well in your home. Hope you and the kittehs have many happy years together.

Might be bragging on this all day, but Delilah was Best of Breed at today's Westminster Kennel Club show. Looking at the winners (https://tinyurl.com/4ztryawe), she must have been a little dark spot in a sea of white.

This is our second Westminster breed win. Lila's grandmother, the great Lacey, was Best of Breed in 2004.

Lila will be in the Hound Group tonight (where we don't expect to do anything), televised on Fox Sports. Coverage begins at 7:00 PM Eastern and Hounds are first up at 7:30.

19 Yeah Buddy!

In answer to your question about how the raccoon traveled, all I know is he was sure glad to be let out of that trap, especially after the trip up the curvy mountain road. He/she rode in the back of my truck up to it's release point.

They love Jet Puff mini marshmallows. That's what I baited the trap with.

Thanks for the pet thread

I laughed out loud at the long haired dachshund next the 'death from the ankles down' sign. Mrs. JTB knew something was up when I couldn't catch my breath from laughing so hard. 52 Another stellar pet thread and congratulations for Her Majesty and Delilah!

Speaking of spicy singing to feral cats, our Bella is obsessed with a feral Siamese that we feed. Bella can see the front porch where we feed the feral cats from the laundry room window. Last night Bella just went but bonkers. She raced around the house, beg, then threatened me to let her out. She even attacked my foot when she didn't get her way.

Up until a couple of weeks ago Bella stayed in the back yard and was content to exchange insults with the feral cats through the bedroom window. She now regularly jumps the back gate to look for the feral cats. Of course, we now have to keep her in the house come late afternoon which frustrates her more.

And right on cue she is at the front door wanting in.

Looks like I have to start traveling with the cat too. She's really unhappy about being left home alone. I have a big pet carrier that should be comfortable for her.

75 My good friend's beautiful Dalmatian pup just died of valley fever here in AZ. So heartbreaking. They have two young daughters 3 and 5 who adored it. Hug your dog today...
Posted by: Cringe Biscuit at June 12, 2021

Hug your dog (or cat) indeed. They're on this earth for too brief a time as it is - and things like that happen faster than I care to think. That fungus is terribly common in the West, especially AZ. I'm not sure that anything can be done to stop the dog from contracting it, digging and sniffing is sort of what they do. The weird part is IIRC it can take weeks or even years for it to manifest.

That's why I never diddled around with my girls. If one of them showed signs of anything, if it wasn't clearing up in 12 or so hours, off to the vet. Of course, that was almost a guarantee that they'd be better by the time they got there, but I'd much rather be writing a check for no reason than for a reason.

77 Morning everyone! What a great looking passel of pets today. Especially the kittehs -- I'm a kitteh guy -- but the doggehs and birdehs are cute too. My PG ("Pretty Girl") is becoming more at home. There's still a feral (more like overprotective) aspect to her, but she now gives me blinkies when I massage her neck and shoulders. Sometimes at night I'll doze off on the loveseat below the window I open at night for PG. It faces 45 degrees from the back wall and is over the basement so there's a little ledge she loves to climb onto and monitor her backyard at night. Then she'll go on patrol (my ex-gf came up with that to describe her kitteh Maceo) and do the thing I think she loves most of all -- sprinting as fast as she can from the back of the yard, up the fence, onto the ledge, and into the open window, then across the room and down the hall where she comes to a sudden halt at the front door. It's so cool. When you hear a rumble that sounds a bit like an earthquake, that means she's about to come barreling through. (She's smart enough to realize if the window isn't open.) She'll do it several times during the evening.

78 Re. Tobie
For the further adventures of Tobie check out the blog joelsgulch.
Joel is a hermit who blogs from his off-the-grid hootch out in the desert.
He is a neighbor and sometimes collaborator with Gun Jesus (Ian of Forgotten Weapons fame).
I have been following him for years.
I recognized the new flooring that Tobie was laying on.
I should have known Joel was a Moron.

80 Is that a talking parrot ? I remember one time on some Caribbean island we were walking around a mall(?), and I heard "Hello !" I turned around, wondering who it was. No one. Ok. Then again "Hello !" And then I saw him - red and blue plumage.

81 I just applied for a rescue dog at the SF SPCA. One positive (but not for the animals) is now that the lockdowns are going away, people are getting rid of all the pets they got at the beginning of the lockdown. SO many young animals! These $%^&'s are the same creeps that get baby chicks and bunnies for Easter, then flush them down the toilet in June.

For the past forever, all that's been in my area is pitties or chihuahuas. I love pitties, but since most here in Mexifornia have been raised for fighting (either the giving or receiving end) I've not wanted to go that route, nor do I have the space. They still make up about 50% of what's available, but now there's a variety of other mixed breeds.

It's been 5 years, and I'm ready for a new friend. I think the rescue is the way to go, even though I'm on the wait list with some breeders. I sort of like the idea of a "mutt" that won't necessarily have the issues that go with a purebred. There's some real cuties there. I'm hoping for one under 45lbs. but over 15, just because they'll fit in my sports car better! I'll know when we meet, of course (watch me wind up getting an SUV). Hope I make a good first impression. Wish me luck!

That Magawa might be an alpha male rat.

They need to give him a nice lovely young female to enjoy retirement with.

He has EARNED her.

=====

I don't remember where, but I had to have the kids somewhere but one our cock-a-poos got out just as we were leaving.. And like yours, once he's out, he's out until he is ready to come back. Well, didn't have time to wait, so had to leave him out. A little worried as we live on a busy street and the Mrs. would rather lose me than that dog. Fortunately, when we returned two hours later he was sitting on the bench in front of the house. We didn't tell mom.

88 JOEL, JOEL, JOEL!!

Your sweet puppy looks like he has Anatolian Sheep Dog in him. This means big, slow to mature (long teen-age years) and head strong along with smart. I am not bad mouthing them in any way- I about to get one for my sheep herd. Just thinking that you ought to do a little research just in case that makes up some of Tobie's genetics.

Congrats, I hope you two are a match for the ages!

89 Love the pet thread.
It's been a little over 2 weeks since he had our oldest pup euthanized. He was a pit bull mix that was returned from 4 previous "owners" for aggressive behavior. My guess is that they had small children or small animals. Sweetest dog I've ever known. But.... if a snake, armadillo or squirrel got in the yard while my wife was outside, he would go all out crazy eyed killa. We all miss him very much.
Our lab/mastiff rescue is also having issues with hip displasia and cancer. Also 15 years old. That time is coming way too soon. I am certain he will let me know when he is ready.
I worry about our youngest pup. He is an 80 lb firecracker. Always full of energy. Some kind of pit/ cattle dog mix. My good buddy offered us a German Sheppard pup free of charge but my wife says it's too soon. Maybe she's right. Who knows?
Sorry for the gloomy stuff. Part of being a pet owner I guess.
Super big East Texas congratulations Hadrian. Good job!!!!
We don't have TV. I'll try to find on YouTube.
